Panthers Hire Frank Reich

January 26th, 2023

Tom Brady won’t join Sean Payton in Charlotte.

It’s a very safe bet that unretired former Saints head coach Sean Payton won’t land in the NFC South this season, though one could make a case there’s still a flimsy chance he comes to the Bucs.

Because, you know, Tom Brady and the revenue that comes with him alongside a big-name head coach (also his good friend) can never be ruled out completely.

Atlanta has a head coach it likes and the Bucs have Todd Bowles in charge. Today, Carolina hired Frank Reich, the former quarterback, Chargers and Eagles playcaller, and Colts head coach, to be its new head man, presumably to develop a new quarterback.

The Panthers launched QB Baker Mayfield in midseason. Sam Darnold’s contract is up and while third-string quarterback P.J. Walker was good enough to blow out the Bucs in October, he won’t be their 2023 starter. Last year’s third-round pick Matt Corral out of Ole Miss is certainly a longshot. So Reich is probably starting from scratch at the position.

Joe is starting to wonder if Payton, who has been playing the interview game around the NFL, is considering sitting out another year to wait and see if jobs in Dallas or Los Angeles open. Or maybe even in Tampa, where his buddy Brady had such a wonderful experience and ownership is hungry to win big.

Regardless, Brady and Payton won’t be setting up shop with the Panthers. And that’s a good thing.

    Yes !

  2. AL121976 Says:

I’m ok with this, wouldn’t have minded Wilks tho

  3. CChead Says:

Reich is now the only head coach with a winning % in the NFC South.
The great Todd Blowes .405% Go Bucs!

  4. NEfan Says:

Reich is good, got rammed in Indy. Luck retires, Wentz and Ryan blew, went to the PO’s with Rivers and I think Brissett.

2 down, O’Brien & Reich but Billy Jo Bob is still available.

  5. Letsbucinggo Says:

Good hire only way is up for Carolina they are basically like us young unproven quarterback.

  6. NEfan Says:

Unless Payton & Brady go to Miami they won’t be a pair. Payton will probably end up with the Chargers.

  7. NEfan Says:

Wait, they could both go to Houston. Now that would be something. Recruit Jensen and resign Gronk. I like it. Save another loser franchise.

  8. Goatfarmer Says:

Somebody else said the idea that the Bucs should go after Wilks to be DC. That is an awesome idea, except for one problem. Lovie Smith’s distant cousin Toad Blowes. No way he hires someone way better than he is. And that’s a shame.

  9. SKBucsfan Says:

With each and every news story that gets posted it is becoming painfully obvious that we are stuck with Todd Bowles for another season. Licht has not convinced the Glazers to fire him. It seems like he is willing to base his tenure on Bowles improving.

  10. BuxfaninTX Says:

    Steve Wilkes got screwed…….

  11. Amanda Says:

Gronk said Brady is the most likely to come back to Tampa.

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

Steve Wilkes went 3-13 his only year as a HC. Then couldn’t win the worst division in football.

  13. McBucky Says:

Huh. Flimsy chance? Brady leaving the door open to come back and be part of the solution? The front office starting to become smart enough to realize they need a coach as a priority? Brady and Payton, who are now free agents were, I think, the two guys trying to go to Miami together?
If the Bucs are smart they’ll look to shore everything up now – during the off season – and not just put “band aids” on things that won’t do anything for us long term.
    Bowles is not the guy.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    If I’m Payton, I’m going with a younger QB…not Brady….
If I’m Brady, I’m sticking with Evans, Godwin, Gage, Lenny,White.Jensen, Wirfs and Camarda

  15. The Beer Whisperer Says:

In 2 or 3 years, Panthers will be looking for a new Head Coach.

  16. Jerseybuc Says:

He’s a good coach. Unfortunately probably best in the division

  17. NEfan Says:

Wilkes is suing the NFL for discrimination. He is a defensive coach and went 6-6 this season which was a great accomplishment for what.he had to deal with. He was 3-13 as HC in AZ. Why is this racial? Reich is a offensive coach with a winning HC career. If it was racial why was Wilkes the interim coach. Reich has a better resume and Carolina needs someone to develop a QB. Who better than a ex-QB? Not everybody has an agenda.

  18. NEfan Says:

Actually, kick Bowels arse out and replace him with Wilkes.

  19. Richard Says:

Joes….if ownership was hungry to win big the WOULD NOT, REPEAT, WOULD NOT have retained Bowles! They have sentenced the Bucs to mediocrity or worse for the next few seasons….just a horrible mistake on so many fronts!!!!

  20. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

How are they going to recruit Jensen still under contract d rider

  21. Your Mom Says:

Payton also knows that anywhere he goes he will start behind the 8 ball, because they’ll lose draft picks to get him.

  22. Simeon97 Says:

There is 0% chance he is coming to the Bucs. Can’t believe i read this click bait.

  24. Redeemer Says:

Reich is a good coach. Great, now the Panthers have real HC and we have Bowles. He’ll be a thorn in our side. Believe me now and hear me later. Agree with Joe that Peyton will probably wait until next off season, unless something unforseen happens. If Brady stays, I’d be beyond stunned. But wtf do I know, I was beyond stunned when he came here in the first place. Theses coaches get hired fast and furious. Afraid we’re back in the wilderness friends.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

I wouldn’t mind at all if the Bucs hired Steve Wilks as our DC. Dual-hatting coordinators usually means that team favors that side of the ball from what I’ve seen. When the Bucs won the SB in 2020, our offense ranked #3 & our defense ranked #8 (did even better in 2021 ranking #2 offense & #5 defense). Fairly similar story for most SB winners it looks like; hard to find SB winners where 1 side of the ball ranked in the Top-10 while the other side ranked in the Bottom-10.

Interestingly, Eagles have those same rankings this season: #3 offense & #8 defense. They seem to be doing pretty well, as do the Bengals (#7 offense, #6 defense) and Bills (#2 offense, #2 defense).

  26. Redeemer Says:

Why would Peyton come here? He wants complete control and he’ll get it from some organization. Licht is an established GM who wouldn’t stand for second fiddle. why are we even talking about this. Season after next is light-years away. I’ll say this, id fire licht and Bowles in a freaking heartbeat and give him the keys. It might take a couple two three years, but he’s a brilliant offensive mind. As far as the belichick/Parcells tree goes, hes the best IMO

  27. BrianBucs Says:

Panthers did exactly what the Bucs should have done.
They fired their head coach then hired an offensive minded head coach with a history of developing young QB’s

  28. Goatfarmer Says:

    Toad Blowes fire him now

  29. mark2001 Says:

Would he go back to NO and add Brady? With their D already in place, they could be a formidable team.

  30. steele Says:

The sickening feeling watching other teams improve piece by piece, while the Bucs head in the opposite direction, with tripled down Bowles and hand-picked flunkies.

When was the last time there was an objective assessment of the locker room, and its confidence in Bowles?

  31. AB Says:

The Bucs are going to end up with the least impressive staff in the NFL

  32. Old black man Says:

    Screw the Panthers. Screw Brady!

  33. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Steele

Without a legitimate GM/FO it will never change.

The Glazers make money whether we suck or don’t.

  34. Goatfarmer Says:

Old whack woman tries hard to be a bad arse, and yet the image of an uncoordinated little girl attempting to dance keeps appearing every time this girl posts.

  35. Goatfarmer Says:

Here is Art Rooney Junior talking about the job Mike Tomlin did with the Steelers this season. (From NFLcom)

“I think the No. 1 thing I always want to see in a team, and I think that it’s up to the coach to make this happen, is get better as the season goes on,” Rooney said.

“I mean, you should your best team at the end of the season. I thought we did that, bringing a rookie quarterback (Kenny Pickett) along. There’s no one way to do it right. I think we wind up with a rookie quarterback who got better as the season went on. And I think we’re excited about the future because of that. So you know, I think those things are encouraging the way Mike handled them.”

So glad Toad limped in, 6-10 or 2-4 after a 2-0 start. Sad that the Bucs owners can’t make a comment like that. Why? They know the answer, but they’re stuck because…..the situation.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

IF Arians is as upset as he claims about Leftwich being fired, there’s a simple solution, Arians should take the Buccaneers headcoaching job, then he can rehire Leftwich. Even with as much as I hate Leftwich, I’d take that trade. As for Bowles, he can be ‘co’ headcoach and DC. Just like old times.

  37. Jon Grudin Says:

Hire Wills as head coach. No one expected anything from Carolina then they had a fire sale and dumped several top players including Christian McCaffrey. Then fired the coach and gave the reins to Wilks. Wilks went 6-6 and just missed the playoffs. If he had the whole season Bucs would have never won the division.

  38. Jon Grudin Says:

+1 for Rod Munch suggestion to put Arians as co-Head coach. With Brady gone, why not?

  39. CalBucsFan Says:

Here’s a good 3 for 1: dump Bowles and then sign Payton, Brady & Gronk.

    Ok it’s a good 1 for 3.

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  40. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

This sucks because Frank Reich is an excellent coach, and makes the Panthers even better.
