Low Desirability Rankings For Bucs’ Playcaller Opening

January 30th, 2023

Head coach Todd Bowles

So how attractive is Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator opening?

Well, that question can be viewed through many lenses.

First are the X-factors fans will never see. Two are guaranteed money and promises made during the interview process by general manager Jason Licht and head coach Todd Bowles.

But it’s the stuff on the surface that was being ranked by former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms and ProFootballTalk.com guru Mike Florio.

Asked for a 1-to-10 desirability rating of the Bucs’ playcaller gig during their NBC radio show, Simms gave it a 4.

Of course, quarterback unknown downgrades the job opening, but Simms also stressed major offensive line issues, Mike Evans clearly on the decline and the thin ice he believes Bowles is on, among other things.

Florio gave the Bucs’ job a 2 or a 3. He sees a once-powerful team cruising down a steep slope.

“The decline has started and now they’re going to fall off a cliff in 2023. So if I have any other option whatsoever, I’m not taking that job,” Florio said, also noting the unknown of the Bucs’ QB position.

Joe doesn’t believe the Bucs have to fall off a cliff if Licht plays the offseason well. The Bucs still have talented pieces and easily could be the 2023 favorite in their poor division.

But without a quarterback and no guarantee of Bowles’ future in Tampa, Joe can’t play this rating game and give the offensive coordinator opening more than a 5 without knowing if Team Glazer will be paying well over market value.

  2. NYbucsfan Says:

It’s Bowles, who in their right mind wants to join his staff!!

  3. Darin Says:

Yeah Kellen thinks so too so he’s L.A. bound.

  4. #99 the Big fella Says:

Doom and gloom! Any of you would trade bad years for a Super Bowl.. exactly what we did.

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

The Bucs are running out of options quickly.

Monken might be the best choice, but I like Tierney with what he did with Daniel Jones.

Really anyone who has proven on some level that they can develop a NFL QB is welcome.

  6. Cobraboy Says:

    I also see the cliff.

    Time to gut and rebilld.

    “4” seems high. I’d give it a “2.”

  7. beano Says:

JOE: “quarterback unknown downgrades the job opening”

I think an early commitment by the team to develop a young quarterback and rebuild the team would make the OC job (and all other jobs) more appealing. Brady coming back for a disastrous swan song would be the least appealing – job candidates would rightly assume Brady and Bowles would exit stage left after year one.

  8. Sean M Says:

Cmon it’s gotta be a 1 or 2 unless they’re paying way over market. You got a trash offensive line, lame duck head coach who is objectively awful, zero Ted, trash RBs, below average receiving corps, historically inept organization, and oh yeah, zero clarity on the starting QB. With a strong probability of starting Kyle Trask. No one would want this job except someone trying to break into the NFL or a new tier of coaching.

If Tom Brady resigned it would go to at least a 5. But I consider that a less TBA than 10% probability. Bucs need to go creative a take a chance on a young guy or something. No proven vets want to tarnish their resumes with this dumpster fire.

  9. Sean M Says:

    Sorry zero TEs

  10. beano Says:

“The decline has started.” – Florio

    I’ve been saying this all season … 2020 > 2021 > 2022.

  11. beano Says:

If the Bucs are so undesirable to everyone in the NFL why does Joe think Brady would want to return?

  12. McBucky Says:

The Bucs need a reliable HC period. No one trusts Bowles after last season. No one.

  13. Beej Says:

They figure Bowles will get fired next season, then they’ll be job searching again

  14. Thomas Edrington Says:

    i GIVE BOWLES A Minus 5; He’s gone after the 2023 season…..

  15. Hail2dabucs Says:

With the coaching change and injuries as well as poop play with certain players it’s gonna take the right kind of moves to right the ship for the long haul . Does team Glazier & the GM have it in them 2 do that is the question . I know one thing , it’s not looking good bucs fans !

  16. beano Says:

Hey! I have a great idea. Just for Joe! How about Dan Mullen as OC? He’s a bit of a jerk but he’s run some of the most explosive offenses in the SEC.

  17. ElioT Says:

With Bowels here I see it one of two ways:

1.) No OC wants to work for a Lame Duck HC and lose their job after one season

2.) Talented OC knows Bowels sucks and he may be in line for the HC job after Bowels gets blown out

We all know Bowels isn’t making it to year three.

  18. CJ Says:

So what happened to Kyle Trask?
Did we waste a second round pick?
    Why isn’t he our Purdy?
And not for anything, but why the Blaine Gabbert hate?

Kurt Warner was a back up.
Nick Foles was a back up.
We won a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson as our starting QB.

Offensive Line and Defense (turnovers, pass rush, healthy secondary) wins superbowls.

We do need a good OC, but com’on, QB is the least of our worries.

  19. Buc50 Says:

Without a promising QB in the stable, the Bucs are going to get the bottom of the barrel. Bowles being on shaky ground just adds to the spit pile.

  20. Coburn Says:

cJ id you don’t have ‘that guy ‘ or you aren’t sure I’d you do, then you have nobody until you prove otherwise. Our defense will likely lose a lot of talent due to cap. Our offensive line ‘could’ be good if everyone is healthy again and strong competition. I think some might have been in a one year deal like stinnie

  21. Jack Clark Says:

Bowels needs to hire a defensive coordinator so he can start developing into a REAL head coach who can fix both the defense and offense while managing the game clock. All he needs to do is hire a self-sufficient OC and he can coach up any DC to become self-sufficient so he can focus on managing the game clock and helping the offense and defense make game time adjustments. Bowels just needs to take a page out of Mike McCarthy’s notes and let his OC and DC do their jobs while he stays out their way so he can manage the game clock.

  22. DBS Says:

I agree this is a low rated job offering for anyone right now.
Bowles will be gone next year I believe also. Who would want this job unless the next HC will be assured to keep them? Or they become the next HC.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I tend to agree that the Bucs OC job is less than desirable……we should be able to attract a good QB coach who wants a promotion and will take a shot at success…..there are many candidates in that category…

The problem is classic chicken-egg. With Brady undecided (and it may be a while as he may test FA)……and the OC wanting to know the QB……

I will say this about Trask….have we even seen him with the 1st string Oline….with Evans, Godwin?…..nope.

And if he’s already a bust simply from practice….then we had Licht, BA, BL, Brady, Christensen & Moore all striking out on him. That seems unlikely.

  24. mark2001 Says:

Thank you. I’ve tried to express it in so many ways. We are set up for a one-year patch job, when at least three of the four tires need to be replaced.

  25. Jack Clark Says:

Todd Monken would be a good fit for us because he proven capable of developing college quarterbacks and he has successful NFL career experience. So either if Tom Brady or Kyle Trask is our quarterback next year he will be able to dial up plays for us to score many points.

  26. Redeemer Says:

Jack, did you watch the divisional game? McCarthy let valuable time tick off the clock before he decided to punt. Bowles is a DC. That’s why he failed this season. He was a piss poor coach in NY and he’s just as bad now. Who the hell would want to come here, when you don’t even know who the QB will be. Unless Brady comes back, the new OC will be a QB coach or a collage guy. Nobody is coming here for a lateral move. We are about to re-enter the wilderness. Get ready for a nice 5-12. It didn’t need to be this way.

  27. mark2001 Says:

Jack…we FIRED Monkin from here when Arians came in. How many people do you know that come back to the company that fired them from the same position just a few years earlier? In all my years I know of absolutely none. He might use us, like Gruden did, to get a fat payday elsewhere. But I think you are dreaming if you think he will come back here… added to the fact that it might be a one year gig and he would be out in the wind if Bowles and company get fired.

  28. Jonny Says:

This is exactly how I saw the off season play out for us if Bucs retained Bowles and just fired Leftwich. It is much easier to get a quality OC to become a head coach for this organization than a talented offensive coach to become the OC. We have the stink of the worst running game in the league, which either means bad O-line or bad RBs or both. We have Evans who outside of Tampa will be looked at as an aging star possibly soon becoming over the hill. We no talent at TE worth a damn. Godwin and Wirfs are truly the only two established players in the peak of their prime.

  29. D-Rok Says:

Man, I’m becoming a tad concerned by this team’s prospects in 2023 (or am I being to pessimistic?), which is an about-face for me from the last 2-3 years.

I am hoping Licht and Co kill it in the draft and free agency, IF we are going to be competitive.

So many unanswered questions swirl around this team. I can’t wait for the next 5 months to play itself out before I’ll know if I can get excited for this year.

    SIGH.

  30. Aceofaerospace Says:

Huge mistake not firing Bowles also. Huge.

  31. Roc Says:

    Bowles is quick sand …

After next season 3-14 Bowles will be gone with entire staff

  32. NEfan Says:

The NFL is not blind, they saw how Blows took a shoe in contender and turned them back into the carpet baggers they’ve been for years. They see how the players react to Blows and vise versa. Doom and gloom again for a while Bucs fans. Thanks Again BA, you killed the Bucs.

  33. The Anomaly Says:

We probably needed to hire from within to fill the job.

    This is a problem.

Now you are going to get a 3rd rate coach as an OC

Why bother? What a mess. Jason Licht made this mess

You people that gave him a vote of confidence are nuts.

    HE IS TO BLAME.

  34. Knucknbuc Says:

Pretty impressive that Mike evans is on the decline with 1100 yards on his resume last year. That was a down year lol

  35. ClwJB Says:

No one wants to work for Bowles – 5 years as a HC, 4 OC have been fired – 3 years in a row in NYC and now with Byron

In NY, he hired 18 assistants his first year and in year 3, only 4 of them remained

The guy is a complete tool and we are doomed with him in charge

Maybe the glazers are taking notice as they can’t give the job away to anyone with a lick of credibility

    Maybe?????

Mike McCarthy is no Bill Belichick when it comes to clock management but my point was that Todd Bowels should let his OC and DC do their jobs like Mike McCarthy does so Bowels can develop into good head coach instead of a DC pretending to be one. Todd Bowels is not a good head coach because he still wants to play the role of a DC. He needs to step out of his comfort zone and hire someone else to run the defense.

You see? Unlike the rest of you people I actually come up with reasonable solutions to our problems–other than you know… “FIRE HIM!!!!!”

So what happened to Kyle Trask? We don’t know what he can offer because he got no playing time. Neither does any potential OC.

Did we waste a second round pick? We don’t know.

Why isn’t he our Purdy? He might be. We don’t know, and we cannot put all oour eggs in one basket.

And not for anything, but why the Blaine Gabbert hate? Gabbert is more injury prone than Teddy Bridgewater.

Kurt Warner was a back up. Warner was an Arena League guy

Nick Foles was a back up. Foles was a backup who had a decent year, and capitalized on it…and never did well again.

We won a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson as our starting QB. Brad Johnson was a quality starting free agent at the time. If someone like him came to use in today’s NFL as a young QB, we’d win multiple SBs.

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If Trask had gotten any time playing, say for a half or something, then we’d have a general idea at least.

  41. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Bucs need to pay the credit card this coming year and see what they have in Trask. Get rid of Donovan Smith, Fournette, Logan Ryan, Rudolph, Julio Jones, Perriman, Akeem Hicks, and SMB. Draft Dline, Oline and LB. Use this year to decide on JTS and see if Hall develops. Glazers need to realize the next coach will get the best out of this team. Bowles is just not the HC this team needs.

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Buccaneers roll with Kyle Trask, trade second rounder for quarterback Brock Purdy, who needs 6 months to recover.

Boom. Future looks much brighter and we can draft OL in the first round.

  43. mark2001 Says:

Trade a 2nd rounder for Purdy? No.
    Roll with Trask? No.

Draft a guy this year. Yes.

  46. mark2001 Says:

Bonzai. I don’t think we will have to trade for some good QB prospect. There will be quite a few guys out there. The question is, are any of them diamonds in the rough, that given a little time, will become a real franchise QB?

  47. Dom Says:

There is no way a team that wasn’t good last year and barely won the NFC South is going to compete in the NFC South again this year with worse QB play and a worse defense. Without Brady and losing pieces like LVD and Dean, the Bucs will be a 2-3 win team, 4 tops. Caleb Williams or Drake Maye would definitely be in play. Pay the dues this year, lock up some of the young cornerstones like Wirfs and Winfield and get ready to compete in 2024.

  48. Joe Swanson Says:

Sorry Joe, Brady may have another suitor Brock Purdy had a complete tear of the ligament in his elbow his recovery his at least nine months or career ending I guess its Tommy John surgery. And with Trey Lances torn acl and lack of experience who knows.

This job is a zero on the desirability scale. Other than the compensation.

Its likely a one and done job once bowles gets fired next year.

Does anyone really think Bowles is around in 24.

  59. Redeemer Says:

Jack, he hired an 18 man staff in NY. By his final year, 14 of them had been fired by Bowles himself. That reeks of blaming other people for your own failings. I want Bowles to succeed. What I don’t want is another 20 years without a shot at a ring. People around here are so accustomed to failure, it bleeds into the fanbase. Go ahead, let Bowles hire his staff. You watch what happens. If I’m Licht, I’d be worried about my job too. We all have BA to thank for this mess, because he’s an ego maniac like most of em. He couldn’t stand giving Brady credit for turning the franchise around and had to scuttle the entire organization to make himself look more important than he really was. I want to win.

  60. 1buc4u Says:

I smell a rat or at least a dead fish during red tide on Clearwater Beach after 2 days.
    A) Bucs already have the person for OC and just blowing smoke to the rest of us)
    B) No one has resect for Todd Bowels and doest want the OC job. (Hire within)
    C) Negotiating with a new Head Coach and we will find out by Friday.
    D) All the above ( Makes for good news to keep us quessing)

This is a test and only a test !!

  61. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs fans have to be some of the worst in the NFL. You all have no idea … nada, zip, zero, zilch … of what’s behind Door #2 or Door #3 (ie, what the alternatives are) on virtually any of these proposals, and yet you’re willing to tear things down without any concrete information to go on.

I’ll use Todd Bowles as a first example. Let’s say the Glazers fire him today to placate the ‘fans’. OK, now what? We’d then have no HC, no DC, no OC. We’d have free agency coming up in roughly a month with … 27 Bucs free agents on the chopping block. That’s HALF our team … and 17 of those were members of our DEFENSE this past year. So we’re left with an injured Shaq, Winfield, White, Davis, Vea, JTS, Hall, Britt, McCollum & Russell. Oh ya, that’s a Top-10 defense for sure right there.

No fear though, we’ve got Licht to sign a quality defense that can compete this year for the division crown. Just for kicks, check his record on drafting defensive players BEFORE Bowles came along in 2019. Let’s see, we had Kwon Alexander, Devante Bond, Ryan Smith, Noah Spence, Vernon Hargreaves, Stevie T, Kendell Beckwith, Justin Evans, Jack Cichy, MJ Stewart, plus Vita Vea, Jordan Whitehead and Carlton Davis. Only 2 still with us are Vea (Rnd 1 pick) and Davis (Rnd 2 pick). All the rest are long gone.

Be very careful what you wish for. This roster is probably in the worst mess it’s been in since at least Jon Gruden’s departure. Bowles didn’t create this mess, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out who did.

  62. Redeemer Says:

While my innocuous comment is awaiting moderation, let me agree with Dom. Although this team could stumble into 5 wins, no way they win the putrid south next season. Brady is as good as gone and I’m sad. Brother D-Rok, call the ambulance. I need a med check and a full evaluation if I’m to remain here

  63. mark2001 Says:

1 Buc4… let’s see…Red Tide or -20 below zero. One you wear a nose plug and rub your eyes. The other, you put on insulate boots, gloves and a parka. Which is worse? The Bucs coaching situation is. Trick question.

  64. Old black man Says:

Most of you “fans” are fair weather. Enjoying beating on the coach of “your” team. Please leave. Lesson from pops. You’re welcome.

  65. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Glazers are clinging to the slight chance Brady returns. Need to force his hand early to see what the Bucs need to do. If Brady leaves, I would trade D. White and Evans.

  66. stpetebucfan Says:

The only silver lining in all of this is that Bowles is a dead man walking according to the JBF posters. Perhaps NFL types agree.

That leads me to Moncken who knows the area and the Bucs organization. I’m not sure how much he could actually “trust” Licht because I don’t see it being in any contract but if Licht gave Moncken his word that he’s next if Bowles is shown the door that could make the job attractive.

Moncken would be in a win win situation. If Bowles succeeds it would most likely be because of Moncken’s help at OC making Moncken valuable as an HC candidate. If OTOH Bowles fails Moncken would be the next HC.

Only 32 NFL HC positions in the world. Gotta grab the ring while you can.

  67. Nprbuc Says:

Can hardly believe that tea.s aren’t lined up to interview Leftnut. It will be the same for Bowles when they finally pull the trigger on him. DC Probably but his HC days are done. What do the Glazers see that no one else does? I would love to see their lists of pluses and minuses for keeping him and Armstrong.

  73. ModHairKen Says:

Evans had some bad plays. He is not in decline. That’s stupid. The OL is not that bad. D Smith had some bad plays. Wirfs was hurt. Jensen was hurt.

Doom and gloom is funny from Journeyman Simms and Cancel Culture Florio

  74. BucsFan81 Says:

No one any good is going to take that job. They don’t want to be handcuffed to Bowles. Why everyone didn’t get a fired is beyond me. A complete re build needs to happen. They are just prolonging the situation for the end result to be the same.

  75. Browsing from DC Says:

I agree the desirability factor is very low. It’s about Bowles. Period. For all of the “Brady needs to go” crowd, him staying brings the desirability factor UP at least a few points. No 1st year OC wants a failed offense to start with. Maybe they grab Carr or Mayfield, but that stuff won’t be in place until after an OC is hired most likely.

Losing Bowles as HC (only a matter of time) also means losing his defensive coaching which has been his strength. Doubtful he would take a demotion. He would move on, probably miss a year then sign on with another team as DC.

None of the current OC candidates gets my blood pumping. I don’t care how well they did in college any more than I care how good a QB was in college. Tebow, Zach Wilson, Brian Griese, etc, etc. For every Mahomes or Lamarr Jackson there are 20 high draft pick busts like Johnny “Football” Manziel. Same goes for coaches.

I don’t trust Bowles (and or Licht) to put together a coaching staff at this point. Payton is a pipe dream but Jim Harbaugh is possible, especially if Brady gets him on the phone. Hopefully he’ll stay in Michigan until after next season when the Bucs come to their senses and fire or demote Bowles and make a run for Harbaugh.

They should grow a pair and do it now. It’s smart business. Nothing personal.

  76. NEfan Says:

DR, I get your point but isn’t that the definition of insanity? If Bucs.keep Bowles do you really think he is going to listen to his new OC anyway? He seems pretty set in his ways.

  77. NEfan Says:

Harbaugh already committed to stay in Michigan

  78. steele Says:

If the Bucs want to be a desirable gig, they need to fire Bowles. Short of that, it ain’t desirable. The ones who would go for a partial somewhat toothless OC job under Bowles’ control are what we are hearing about. Lower level guys who just want a chance, not top level architects of offenses.

As for Monken. Yes, they fired him. Why would he want to come back?

  79. richbucsfan Says:

The best option is to clean house and bring in a totally new staff, i.e. Sean Payton and his newly assembled staff. He will attract top talent and give the organization highly prized ‘juice’.

You said they need to get creative, and I agree whole heartedly. I commented on a previous article that if Brady leaves, and they don’t wanna roll w Trask, I think they should make a run at either T Huntley or Mike White. Maybe they don’t work out, but realistically, we’re looking at a lost season anyway. They probably won’t cost much, and if either can flourish w more actual game time, we’d be in a decent spot. Not saying either would become legit starters, but at this point, take a chance on someone who’s shown some kind of promise and hope for the best, or wind up in the same position they were already in.GO BUCS!

Any option for Bruce to come back?

  85. John Dixon Says:

Who wants to work for a HC who has proven only to be able to destroy teams and culture while throwing everyone else under the bus to save his own behind every year.?

  86. BOAT Says:

No decent offensive coach with any options is going to want to come anywhere near to a team coached by Bowles. After his time with the Jets, and then his first season with the Bucs, pretty much everyone knows he’s easily the worst head coach in the NFL, especially when it comes to offense.

  87. Brandon Says:

With an AVERAGE offense, this team wins 10 games during the regular season this year. Leftwich did zero scheming to get receivers open, focused his attack in the early parts of games on passes three yards past the line of scrimmage or less, and never pushed the ball down the field to keep defenses honest. We could have been average this past season with Gabbert at QB and a good OC. Our weapons are still excellent. Godwin and Evans are elite… Evans has lost nothing, he’s the same guy as he has been the last five seasons. Godwin is a menace in the short to intermediate passing game. There are very good pieces to our offensive line. White will be a good RB in the league, Otton showed major flashes of being a good player. This offense still has some juice.

  88. SlyPirate Says:

“Mike Evans clearly on the decline” … what?

No, he just wasn’t targeted by TB12. When he finally was the focal point, Mike posted a 200 yard game. Mike has another 2-3 years of elite production.
