Is Jim Harbaugh On The Bucs’ Radar?

December 4th, 2022

“Blaine, I already put in a great word for you.”

Everyone tied to the Buccaneers wants a happily-ever-after finish to the Todd Bowles era, as in Bowles hoisting a Lombardi Trophy. But Team Glazer also is running a football business.

And that business demands having a head coach who inspires confidence in everyone connected to the club.

It’s now the time of year when NFL owners start feeling out potential new head coaches. That doesn’t mean a shopping ownership group wants to make a change, but it means they recognize that change could be in their best interests after the current season. So they shop to beat the crowds and avoid potential pressure.

Is Team Glazer sniffing a new head coach? Joe suspects they are. Why? Because that’s good business considering how much the Bucs have underachieved this season with a 5-6 record despite a roster of Pro Bowlers and miserable division foes.

So that brings Joe to reports today that NFL teams are doing deep dives on University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, the former NFL quarterback who had fast and furious success with the 49ers in his four seasons as their head coach.

It got Joe remembering how Harbaugh was on Tom Brady’s podcast last year and it’s obvious they have a relationship. For those unaware, both Harbaugh and Brady are legendary Michigan quarterbacks.

Team Glazer also likes splash hires and, like most owners, wants a guy who knows the quarterback position intimately.

Just something to think about on a Sunday afternoon as the Bucs prepare to avoid securing the worst Brady season in more than two decades tomorrow night.

  1. Marine Buc Says:

I absolutely hope so… But unfortunately the Glazers don’t have the minerals to fire Todd Bowles after just one year…

We need to stage a boycott. If you are a season ticket holder please call the office that handles season ticket sales – (813) 870-2700.

Let them know you will cancel your season tickets or will not be buying season tickets until Todd Bowles and Byron Leftwhich is gone…

That is the only way the Glazer boyz will sack up and do whats right for this franchise.

  2. Allbuccedup Says:

Bucs will stick with Bowles another year Licht is not going to fire him. Next year when the ship is sunk the Glazers will fire him and maybe Licht also.

  3. Tyler904 Says:

    šŸ«¶
Thereā€™s no way they actually do this though

  4. Smashsquatch Says:

100%. He and every other top candidate. No doubt the Glazers are actively searching. A SB appearance is the only way Bowles keeps his job.

  5. SB~LV Says:

    Sean Payton!

  6. Marine Buc Says:

    @ SB-LV

    I agree.

But SP is still under contract with the Saints until 2024.

Would you be willing to trade a 1st and 2nd round pick for him?

Do you really think the Saints – a NFC South Division rival – would accommodate this trade?

Note: credit to Rod Munch for reminding me of these issues.

  7. AmauryGuzman Says:

This team should have ran away with this division. I am so sick of watching Bowles and his inept coaching staff.

  8. NEfan Says:

Maybe this is why BA is so quiet, Licht told him you and your BS wannabe coaches are O U T out!!!

  9. Goatfarmer Says:

    Brian Flores or Eric Bienemy.

  10. TheBucsAnthem Says:

The Glazers will ride out Todd Bowles contract this season and then get rid of him after the season is done.

Everyone knows Brady doesn’t have much left in the tank and therefore Brady will leave looking for capable playoff team………

Let’s face it Bucs fan, this team is in the midst of a rebuild after this disastrous season.

  11. Redeemer Says:

Harbaugh has had multiple opportunities to return to the league. Michigan is his dream job. I think he’d need to be blown away as far as money and roster control is concerned. He’s a my way or the highway kind of coach. It’s a fun thought, but the Glaziers would probably have to dump licht. Also, would he really leave his dream job for one, maybe two years of Brady, then a rebuild?

  12. HC Grover Says:

ABB…anybody but Clown Bowlezo. Especially if he blunders the Stanks game. This is his last chance to get a brain.

  13. NEfan Says:

    Bill O’Brien

  14. TheBucsAnthem Says:

There is no last chance for Bowles……he’s gone after the season whether or not he wins more games.

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

If really wanna tie a last chance game to Bowles…..then it was the browns game. That lost was inexcusable. Poor clock management….poor coaching decisions…..and ZERO adjustments made in the game.

That is just bad coaching period.

  16. HC Grover Says:

Monday Night Clown Bowl. The Coaching battle will be epic. Clown v Clown

  17. Redeemer Says:

NE, fan. Billy O. would certainly be atop my list. Probably Brady’s too.

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

Bill O is trash look how done the Texans he destroyed that team you New England fans need to go root for your team. It’s crazy how NE list and Redeemer are fake Patriots fans and Fake bucs fans. I can’t wait until Brady is gone so fake fans like y’all can get off the bucs web site. Nothing y’all say means nothing to real bucs fans.

  19. AmauryGuzman Says:

Feels like they should have won this division already. The ineptitude of this division is a joke. Seriously this team hasnā€™t even gotten better. They have remained the same all season long. Thatā€™s inept coaching for you. No adjustments . No accountability with certain players etc.

  20. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Oneilbuc

Safe to say D. Watson, Lovie Smith and the upper management of the Texans franchise are more to blame for the dumpster fire they became after Billy B was fired…

He was 52-48 after 6 years and led them to the AFC Championship game – not to mention what he accomplished at Penn State – who was a complete joke before Billy B arrived…

  21. Marine Buc Says:

    Billy B >>>>>>>> Todd Bowles…

  22. NEfan Says:

OneiltoBrady, you are showing your ignorance AGAIN. Bill O’Brien missed the playoffs once for Houston, his final year. Hopkins and him didn’t get along so when he was traded the spoiled, over paid offender took a hissy fit. The organization chose Watson over O’Brien. He is a Great offensive minded coach. How is your choice Bowels doing??? Fing moron.

  23. Jerseybuc Says:

    Get this done !!

  24. View from 132 Says:

More importantlyā€¦ what will Lamar Jackson want?

  25. AmauryGuzman Says:

Squealers keep kicking fgs. They should have destroyed the falcons already.

  26. Marine Buc Says:

    @ view

We can’t afford him. Unless Tom Brady comes back we are in rebuild mode…

Over $50M in dead cap space next season if Brady doesn’t return for one more season.

  27. Pewter Power Says:

Glazers will keep Bowles if they want a premium draft pick to get a quarterback. Like Lovie heā€™s not good for anything else. He should be embarrassed with the coaching job heā€™s done with this roster.

  28. AmauryGuzman Says:

Here comes the damn falcons. Stupid squealers.

  29. AmauryGuzman Says:

Marine Buc thereā€™s ways to maneuver the cap man.

  30. AmauryGuzman Says:

If the falcons come back here this team is in must win mode tomorrow.

  31. firethecannons Says:

good with Harbaugh release the bowles

  32. Marine Buc Says:

    @ AM

Yea I know – just keep kicking the can down the road…

But at some point you will need to pay the fiddler.

  33. NEfan Says:

View what do you want to pay for a RUNNING QB that just blew his knee out???? They wanted to pay him and he held out. Good One Lamar!

  34. WillieG Says:

Iā€™m all for getting Harbaugh, but only if he keeps Leftwich as offensive coordinator. (The preceding comment was brought to you by sarcasm. Sarcasm. Itā€™s whatā€™s for breakfast.)

  35. AmauryGuzman Says:

The steelers are throwing away this game. Unreal.

  36. AmauryGuzman Says:

The falcons keep hanging on in this division. Very dangerous.

  37. BucU Says:

A few observations. Can anybody argue the fact that Bowles does not inspire the men on this team? Virtually every single game this team comes out flat and unemotional with minimal effort. His overseeing of the offense has been a disaster. He’s allowed Byron to scheme this embarrassing vanilla and easy to decipher offense with zero changes after 11 games. Has anybody seen Bowles ever huddle up w TB12 and Byron discussing a strategy on the sideline? Once? His uninvolvement is glaring.
His clock mismanagement at the end of the Browns game was a shocking fail. He single handedly lost that game and is directly responsible for the Wirfs/Winfield injuries in OT.
And worst of all is this man has refused in the 3 press conferences since the game to acknowledge he screwed up. So Mr Accountability after reflecting on it had no concerns at all about it.
And we wonder why this team is giving minimal effort
    every game.

  38. Ed Says:

I think you look At Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff. The Eagles couldnā€™t score points and now they are an offensive machine. install an offense like that with accountability.

Canā€™t help but notice how head coaches talk to their players and units as they come off the field and on their benches. Todd isnā€™t talking to his units during games. Who does he think he is? Tom Landry? Even sour faced Billichick huddles up with his defense during changes.

    Bowles is clueless.

  39. AmauryGuzman Says:

The falcons will keep putting pressure on this team it seems.

  40. Byron Leftwichā€™s gym teacher Says:

Schiano would likely be better than this Schit show

  41. NEfan Says:

Pay Vrabel whatever he wants, look what he’s done with the Titans and they are far less talented than the Bucs.

  42. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ BucU

You’re right about everything you’ve said.

But if you understand the Glazers and their history with losing coaches and losing seasons…….you’ll know that they never fire coaches mid-season….and always gets rid of them after the season is over.

Everyone knows after the botched Browns game….Bowles and this coaching staff are gone after the season.

  43. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Oh God…..the “ghosts of Schiano”…..

I dunno what was worse….Schiano, Raheem, or Lovie???

    All three were pretty bad

  44. Tony Says:

If Bowles & Leftwich can’t do anything with Brady Evans Godwin & the talent on their offense then they shouldn’t be on a coaching staff. If they’re gonna be part of the Bucs they should be cheerleaders with some of the girls there.

  45. Tony Says:

    Next head coach:

    ANTONIO BROWN

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Falcons just lost….

  47. BucsBro Says:

    Falcons choke.

    We have to win tomorrow.

  48. Tye Says:

Todd Bowles – loses everywhere he goes..
Jim Harbaugh – wins everywhere he goes…
Bucs would be STUPID not to!

Jim Harbaugh – wins everywhere he goes…
Sean Payton – many winning seasons in the NFl..
Shane Waldron – can scheme and game plan to win with lesser qbs (Geno Smith).

  49. D-Rok Says:

I think Bill O’Brien would be a good fit, and have said that a few times in last week or two.

    He’s an offensive-minded coach. šŸ™‚

  50. Irishmist Says:

The problem is that if you release Bowles, the team will have to learn a whole new defense, and the D is actually doing well. I would fire Leftwich and hire an innovative young OC to work with Trask.

  51. AmauryGuzman Says:

I have never seen a more lucky team than the Vikings. I think they can be had. Theyā€™re paper tigers.

  52. Donald Trump Says:

Team Glazer also likes splash hires

Joe, they hired Raheem Morris, Greg Schiano and Lovie Smith and Dirk Koetter. I wouldn’t call any of those “splash” hires. Jon Gruden and Bruce Arians were the only splash hires that I’m aware of.
    The rest are trash hires.

  53. TheBucsAnthem Says:

It’s pretty unbelievable…..the Jets had so many opportunities to win against the Vikings…..but blew it….

Reminded me of how the Bucs lost to the Browns.

  54. Joe Says:

I wouldnā€™t call any of those ā€œsplashā€ hires.

Schiano sure was. It didnā€™t work out but damn that hire made waves. But realize that the Glazers pushed very hard to hire Bill Parcells, twice, and lost out. They also pushed for Chip Kelly when he was a sexy name and that blew up.

  55. NEfan Says:

TheBucs, not sure why on 2 & 3rd down they didn’t try for a 1st down they had plenty of time. Burious pulled a Scotty on the TD pass.

  56. Donald Trump Says:

Its ironic how the two actual splash hires both produced Superbowl titles

  57. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Unfortunately…….I’d have to agree with Joe on this one…..Schiano at that time was big because of how he turned around Rutgers football program.

……..but because that was a decade ago…..new bucs fans and older bucs fans don’t remember.

I still blame Greg Schiano for ruining Josh Freeman’s NFL career.

  58. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Please stop with all the Harbaugh is coming to Tampa nonsense.
He has it made in Michigan, and his team is second in the USA.
He will play for the national championship.
He has it made in Michigan, so why would he want to come to Tampa ?

  59. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    LOL

    Chris is right….

Harbaugh coming to Tampa is an absolute pipe dream fantasy.

    Who’s next? Nick Saban? šŸ¤£

  60. NEfan Says:

Bill O’Brien Nebraska didn’t hire him. He wants to be a NFL HC.

  61. D. B. Cooper Says:

@Marine Buc – Absolutely love your passion! I do not agree with everything you post, but I love your genuine passion. That is something I always have time for.

Regarding Harbaugh and those doubting…. Brady quietly and politely kept his distance from Michigan for years… Well over a decade and a half. There was one man he listened to when he decided to stop keeping his distance…. Jim Harbaugh.
Does not hurt that if you were to attempt to measure passion and desire for winning, Brady likely has no equal, but as far as coaches go Harbaugh sure is close.

Jim would obviously have to conveniently forget Brady’s comment about his his brother and the rule book, after the 2015 playoff game when the Patriots called “Baltimore” and “Raven” and had John as close to losing his sh*t as he ever has.

  62. ocala Says:

Hopefully the Glazer’s keep Bowles and have Trask as the starter next year. The Bucs would likely have fewer than four wins on the season giving them a great chance at a top QB in the 2024 draft with a brand new head coach.

  63. Mike C Says:

Brady to Tampa was also Absurd…

  64. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Plot twist – Patriots finish last in the AFC East. Billy B gets relieved of his duty. He reunites with Tommy B in Tampa next year.

  65. Bucsfan13 Says:

Shanahan is currently killing it with a third string QB. Donā€™t tell me quality play calling doesnā€™t matter. Leftwich is holding this team back!!

  66. adam from ny Says:

i was fancying the thought of harbaugh about 2 weeks ago…

thinking it also could keep brady on the team for his probable final 2 years in the nfl…

i could see a good match there

  67. Buczilla Says:

If Brady agrees to come back if we get Harbaugh, ownership has got to move heaven and earth to make it happen. They’ve done out of the box things like this in the past, and they’re not afraid to spend any amount of loot needed to get what they want.

Michigan is a second tier football college and Harbaugh surely realizes that his window to compete for national championships is only going to be open once every 10 years if he’s lucky. If in his heart, he’s truly intent on getting back in the nfl, he’d be insane to stay at that podunk college and pass up all of the incredible talent that we have on our team.

The Glazers also have a history of non-interference when it comes to football matters and would most likely let Harbaugh run the whole damn show if that’s what it took to get him. I also think that Harbaugh would be treated like royalty by us fans due to his short, but awesome track record in the nfl. Go get em Glazers!

  69. Redeemer Says:

Oneilbuc, calling people fake bucs fans appears to be you’re only argument. Maybe you’re the real fake fan here. You apparently want the team to return to to the dregs of the league. It’s okay to admit Tom Brady saved the franchise. As a football fan in general, I can appreciate what Brady accomplished in new England. Your simple minded nonsense is quite transparent. I suppose you’d rather give the superbowl back too. Loser.

  70. Anonymous Says:

Thatā€™s even if the glazers fire Bowles šŸ™ they probably give him another shot which to me is dumb why does he need another yr if he couldnā€™t do anything with Brady ? Please fire this guy and bring in some real coaches. Brian Flores would be incredible.

  71. Nick2 Says:

It’s the perfect fit and will keep Brady here. Harbaugh is a great coach who will get the most out of his team. I pray your wondering is factual.

  72. Tom Sumner Says:

    Great idea!! I’m in!! Totally!

  73. Cobraboy Says:

@Marine: after the Glazers got Gruden, the BFL banned trades for coaches.

  74. Crickett Baker Says:

LoL. Do great minds think alike? I, too, had Harbaugh cross my mind about a week ago. It was when Bowles played “no riskit no biskit” backwards.

  75. Rod Munch Says:

Brady isn’t coming back next year, so why bother getting a good headcoach?

Just have these two losers stay in charge and then Tank with Trask(tm) next year as you clean up the cap, and you try to get the #1 pick.

Cap hell is real next year, not the fake ‘cap hell’ that Gruden always whined about as an excuse for his terrible personsell choices. It’s going to be quite the achievement to keep Brady and field a good team next year – it’s not, however, impossible, so if there is any chance Brady is back if Harbaugh comes in, then sure, take it. But I can’t believe Harbaugh is taking Brady for one year, and then deal with what’s left of the team the year after that.

Also while Brady is remarkable for continuing to play at such a high level at age 45, at some point he REALLY WILL show his age. From the Bucs side, you do whatever you can to keep Brady around until he retires. But from a coach standpoint, would you commit to a 7-year deal when you’re only getting 1-year of a 46-year old Brady? Seems unlikely.

No, the answer is you tell Arains to retake his job, or you tell him you’re firing his entire staff, destroying his legacy since he wanted to leave with Bowles and Leftwich as headcoaches.

  76. ModHairKen Says:

Let me give you a big Hell Yeah!

  77. Thadeus Says:

If they don’t make the change now, I could care less what they do next season. This season is a wash. Saints will win tomorrow night and most likely the division. The GOAT will be back in New England. Gronk will come back. And they’ll win another Super Bowl because they’ll have a REAL NFL caliber coach.

  78. Oneilbuc Says:

Redeemer. I don’t believe the sky will fall just because Brady retire like you do. I don’t think you’re a real bucs fan I believe you’re more of a Brady/ Patriots fan just by the comments you make. Other teams are winning more games than the bucs without Brady. We have won a superbowl without Brady before and I believe we can do it again. If you have been a Patriot fan mostly than that’s the team you should be rooting for regardless of what player leaves. Win lose or draw I’m rooting for the bucs been here for 27 years and will remain a bucs fan. So yeah to me Brady ain’t bigger than the bucs to me and plus this team is set up perfectly for a young quarterback to develop if the coaches do it right. A running game and a good defense can help a young quarterback developed into a great quarterback.

  79. D-Rok Says:

And to take your hypothetical scenario even further, Thadeus, what if Brady lured Godwin away to NE and Edelman came back?

Ahhh, hypotheticals…NE would have Brady, Gronk Godwin, Edelman, and both Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, and Barry Sanders will all come out of retirement. In game shape.

    LOL!!! (Yes, all sarcasm)

  80. NEfan Says:

Oneiltobrady is really BL, I read his post and can’t understand a word he’s TRYING to say. I think he’s trying to say Brady is holding the Bucs back and Trask would have two rings by now. Stupid is what stupid says and man you’re stupid.

Redeemer. I donā€™t believe the sky will fall just because Brady retire like you do. I donā€™t think youā€™re a real bucs fan

    —————–

I’ve been a Bucs fan since I was a kid, in the 80s, when the Bucs were terrible. Literally my entire fandom, until I was well into my 20s, I never saw (that I remember) the Bucs not losing a double digit number of games every year.

If you’re a real Bucs fan, you know that the late 90s, and very early 00s, were the glory years, and this current couple year period with Brady has also been amazing, and outside of that, the Bucs have been awful since the early 80s. In fact, prior to 2020, the Bucs were still the most losing franchise in all of professional sports.

So basically, expecting good things, is not something a real Bucs fan would expect, you should always assume the worse, if you’re a real Bucs fan.

Also, yes, once Brady leaves, the Bucs go to the back of the bus. No MNF games, no SNF games, and they only get a TNF game because the NFL mandates it.

The Bucs have legit salary cap issues, and if Brady leaves, there’s no reason not to clean house, clean up the cap. As for Trask, he will be the perfect QB for the Bucs in 2023 as they tank and try to get that #1 pick in the 2024 draft.

BTW, if I’m wrong about Trask, if he looks great, then fantastic, you got your future QB already, but there’s literally nothing anyone has seen that would make you have confidence in him as he can’t even beat out Gabbert for the #2 job.

For 2023, assuming Brady is leaving, then you leave these two idiots, Leftwich and Bowles, in charge and let them do their thing, which is lose, because you want them losing. No reason to change coaches and stick with them a 3-14 record.

But every real Bucs fan should hope the Bucs can keep Brady around for as long as possible, as it’s back to people forgetting the Bucs exist otherwise.

  82. Natron Says:

Lovie Smith is currently doing a terrific job of tanking the Texans season for the #1 pick in the next draft, and donā€™t forget that he did the same thing as our HC to bring in Jameis. If the Texans fire Lovie, bring him back, Lovie knows tanking better than anyone!

  83. BucsWinningTheShip Says:

All y’all gonna feel dumb if Bucs make a playoff run and sneak into the ship lol. Bowles is a great DC. If elite is the pinnacle, he falls under great. Honestly it’s our offense that needs to shelf the blame and it isn’t all coaches. Players missing blocks, dropping passes, missing throws, it’s a team sport.

Sign off Madden. We lost two of our best offensive lineman before the season started. We lost another starter to FA. We lost our TE. Godwin was coming off a serious knee injury. How about that defense though? For most part this season they’ve been more than good enough to win ball games.

  87. garro Says:

  88. garro Says:

    Sean Payton!
    He of the Bountygate fame?
Paying people to injure a competitor fame?
Or is that now ok with the society we live in these days?
    Geez!!!

  89. garro Says:

If you think that the Saints arent still trying to injure opponents take a look at the last three games we have played against them!

  90. b4l Says:

    Please let it be.

  91. JD Says:

Just wondering why Clyde Cristenson didn’t get the OC gig. Clearly he had more offensive years than anyone else on the squad!

  92. Jeffs Dad Says:

Bienemy aint got a hc job for a reason hes on leftwichs level no bueno

  93. Oneilbuc Says:

Rob Munch . A real bucs fan should want their own quarterback and not try to live off another teams legendary quarterback.

  94. Killian Says:

Iā€™d take Harbaugh. He did a great job in San Fran. What about Kellen Moore though? He seems to be doing a great job in Dallas.

  95. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

    Cobraboy Says:
“… after the Glazers got Gruden, the BFL banned trades for coaches.”
    .
    .

I believe It wasn’t the trading that was banned, but trading cash in lieu of draft picks or players. If you remember, there were several draft picks plus like $8MM cash.

  96. SaltyBucsFan Says:

NEfan- get tf out of here pats fan, no one wanted your bandwagon a** before, and we certainly donā€™t want you now. I donā€™t give a s*** if you like Brady, but donā€™t try and say weā€™re ignorant for not wanting Bill Oā€™Brien as a head coach. Thereā€™s a reason heā€™s coaching college ball rn genius. You have no right to claim youā€™re a bucs fan. Go root for the Bills or the Chiefs, literally no one will miss you.

  97. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bonzai

Tomlin in all likelihood finishes with a winning record.

Secondly, the Steelers arenā€™t a knee jerk reaction organization. They keep coaches for decades.

Now DeMeco Ryans? Thereā€™s something to look into.
