Evidence Jamel Dean Having Heck Of A Season

December 23rd, 2022

Locking down receivers.

Recently Joe had asked what defensive players have improved this year and Joe was dead wrong by suggesting none had improved.

Joe believes Antoine Winfield has improved, though he’s battling through an injury-riddled season, Winfield was given more responsibilities this fall playing some slot corner. And Winfield continued to play at his Pro Bowl level.

Joe would say that’s an improvement if you have more on your plate and you still ball out.

But Joe also overlooked Jamel Dean having a hell of a season and he’s going to make bank come March. Dean is in a contract year and you could argue not only is he having his best season since being drafted by the Bucs in 2019, he is the Bucs’ best corner now (though Joe is a Carlton Davis fan).

And the PFF tribe has evidence that Dean is balling out. Charting the completion percentage of passes against cornerbacks, Dean ranks No. 5 in the NFL.

The only four starting corners who have allowed a lower completion percentage are Sauce Gardner (Jets), James Bradberry (Eagles) and Darius Slay (Eagles).

Sadly, the Bucs are going to be pinched by the salary cap next season. If the Bucs are able to keep Dean, it is very likely someone else on defense will have to be sacrificed.

One way or another in three months, Dean will be a wealthy man.

    Keep Dean.

Too bad coiches like Bowels don’t count against the salary cap.

  2. Kentucky Buc Says:

All these guys seem to awesome in contract years. Strange how that works.

  3. SOEbuc Says:

I remember early that the secondary looked very good. Of course the entire defense gets wrecked, especially with Ryan and Weinfield. Lots of multiple week injuy on defense.

  4. Tony Says:

They should’ve held onto Whitehead along with Cappa JPP & Suh. But of course instead we’ve got two waterboys running the offense.

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Dean over Davis. Simple as that.

  6. bob in valrico Says:

It would be hard to replace Dean. He has played nearly 100 % of the snaps
until the 49 er game in addition to special teams play. Hope his injury to toe is not turf toe. Davis still has more tackles and pass defenses and Dean has the two
    INT’s to Davis’ one.

  7. A Says:

heck I remember a handful of completions where Dean basically had his hand on the ball. It took a perfect throw and catch to get the completion…would love to keep him but 2023 looks like a throw away year to get our salary cap right. (hopefully coaching staff)

    Go Bucs!

  8. Cobraboy Says:

I always thought Dean > Davis, although both are fine CB’s.

Numerous players should be cap victims. Dean and Davis should be exempt.

  9. Beej Says:

Eagles have the best tandem of corners in the NFL, Davis and Dean come close. Good corners aren’t very common. As for cap, I’m dubious Hicks is back. LD is the only other likely cap savings on D, and he prolly only has one year left anyway. On O side, Brate, Julio probably gone. I suppose Lenny could go. Like to lose DS, huge cap hit tho

  10. SKBucsFan Says:

I remember most on here calling him garbage in the first few years of his career. This just proves that it takes time to develop at this level. Gardiner is the one in a hundred exception. In fact this applies to most positions. We do have some really good young talent.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @SKBucsFan

    I agree.

I’m sorry to say that the old guard is on its way out. Suh and JPP this year, probably David (at least) next year.

Brady being gone will free up a bunch of cap room too…and likely Mike Evans will be gone, simply because he is too pricey and starting to age out.

  12. Craig Says:

He said he was going to earn a real paycheck for next season. He did that, not we just have to see who will be writing the paycheck.

I hope it is the Bucs, but putting big money into the defense will badly diminish the offense, who also has a bunch of Free agents on the block.

  13. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

Call me a blind optimist but
We seem to be getting healthier both sides ball Wirfs Dean Gage Vea hopefully
    Secondary etc
Let’s get this thing back on track and make a run
It is not out of the question for those of u Debbie Downers who are ready to jump off Skyway bridge by the tone of your posts
Dean will get his accolades and bag of money at the end!
Although his last 2 games not special
Been trying to tell sone of you fools since second half of 2019 season that 35 can play
    Go Bucs !

  14. Rick Says:

No way you let a guy like him just walk. Need to franchise and trade at a minimum. We can get under the cap to do so and can really use the picks.

  15. Uncle Urk Says:

Next year should be simple. Remove the inflated salary of the LT. Remove gholston, Rudolph, benard, jones, Nelson, ryan, and any other on veteran salary. They eat up the most. We will get younger and less expensive. The problem will be Brady. If he returns, a vet Qb, even though Brady is always team friendly, will eat into the cap. If he doesn’t and we go with a young QB, we will suck outload, but we’ll be in a more favorable cap position. Maybe we can get love from the packers, Wilson from the jets, or maybe lance from the 9ers. Like the Saints picked up famous jamius. Or, you should see my face… trask? Did I say that out load?

  16. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

To help sign Dean the Bucs should somehow get rid of lazy ass Mr. penalty D. Smith. Also let Bunting walk.

  17. NEfan Says:

    SOFT!!!

  18. DRFEELGOOD Says:

Joe. He is actually number 4.

  19. Tony Says:

Trade down as much as possible get as many picks as possible & help build the team as much as possible, too! Especially for depth & everything. Especially if you’re not gonna do much in FA or during the trade deadline. How do you expect the team to get better? It’s all about the $$$$ with The Glazers but they do realize that if the team becomes a playoff team & constantly makes the playoffs it brings more $$$$ in. Out of town fans come for the games if they have a home game & even if they don’t either way it brings more $$$$ to the restaurants & bars & places like that, too!

  20. Tony Says:

How long does the team expect to be rebuilding? They’ve been building this team basically ever since they came out.🙄
