Fighting The Gravity Of A Losing Culture

November 7th, 2022

Leading by example.

Former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had an excellent observation about the Bucs trying to turn things around.

Remember when the Bucs drafted Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston? One reason was Winston had been such a winner wherever he played, that by sheer animal magnetism the Bucs thought he would right the Bucs’ pirate ship in the deepest throes of the Lost Decade.

However, the Bucs’ losing culture was so deeply embedded into One Buc Palace that it even swallowed up Jameis. In five seasons, Jameis guided the Bucs to one winning season (his second) and no playoffs.

Not until the ultimate winner Tom Brady came along did things change. Radically.

But this year, things were beginning to spiral out of control and last night the Bucs were on the verge of losing their sixth game in seven contests. That’s exactly what the Bucs of the Lost Decade would do.

The difference now is the team is loaded with talent. Joe is starting to believe Bucco Bruce Arians was such a damn good coach that the loss of him is the reason for the dropoff.

Romo said in a game wrap-up last night for CBS that the old losing culture of the Bucs was beginning to seep back into One Buc Palace.

People say winning is contagious. Well, so is losing, and it becomes habitual. Romo sensed that was happening in Tampa.

He said the way the Bucs won last night might have a lasting effect on the younger Bucs, who were not on the Super Bowl-winning team.

Romo believed the way the Bucs won was a sign to the younger players that this is the way things are done in Tampa Bay. This is the standard. Will you live up to the standard in crunch time?

See Romo’s take in the CBS video below.

Was nice to get the win. Also for a team that has had to punt so often, good thing we have an outstanding punter.

  2. Tye Says:

Oh PLEASE!… Its not the culture… Its the losing coaches that are no longer carried by Arians talents….

  3. JimbobBucfan Says:

    ā€‹Yup! YEP! Y’all.

Now about the Buc fans who supported the franchise during the dark years. … In spite of the bandwagon followers who have already abandoned all hope and fled what they think is the sinking ship, we will play them one game at a time. We saw some heart and some “wanna” finally! Even after Tom is gone we will not go completely back into the toilet.

Go Bucs! Thanks for playing some #@%!*& football this week! šŸˆ

  4. Tbbucs3 Says:

Romo is such a great broadcaster especially compared to that weasle Colinsworth

I ask questions about the coaches as much as anyone, but did Byron drop all those passes? Did Todd injure all those players? Is Jason really that bad now that some rookies look as good as the veterans?

It’s a weird year in the nfl.

Keep fighting. Be thankful we have brady.

Leftwich is on a mission to destroy the winning culture, and he’s damn near succeeded.

Fake news. He’s not a good coach, but it’s not sabotage.

To hear romo a perennial loser talk about a losing culture we know what the problem is and itā€™s the coach

  9. Proudbucsfan Says:

We all seen what happened when Brady had enough and started calling his own plays .

    Fire Jenna Laine!

  12. Onetrickpony Says:

I thought we were about to lose another one but Brady in the end calling his own plays is what brought us back, while Lefty stood there in his normal trance showing no emotion, zombie like. Congratulations to Tom Brady on his 100K yards.

The team is “loaded with talent”? If the talent isn’t coached and led properly, it doesn’t matter, it remains a losing culture.

This game was no masterpiece, but for those who called Brady washed and done, he amply proved that he is one of the only things still capable of greatness. Again. This week, he had a little help for a change.

  15. Joe Says:

The team is ā€œloaded with talentā€? If the talent isnā€™t coached and led properly, it doesnā€™t matter, it remains a losing culture.

As Mike Tanier of Football Outsiders once wrote, “Never underestimate how bad coaching can drag down a team.”

  16. bucs4life Says:

Bucco Bruce Arians? We lost Marpet, Jensen and Cappa. We lost JPP, Whitehead, Suh, Gronkowski. Shaq Barrett torn his Achilles and turned 30. We barely have any playmakers in a lot of units. A lot of useless overpaid WRs and only rookie TEs. Licht did a lousy job.

  17. D-Rome Says:

However, the Bucsā€™ losing culture was so deeply embedded into One Buc Palace that it even swallowed up Jameis.

I guess Joe also believes in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny as well.

The things that swallowed up Jay-Miss was his lack of maturity and his inability to not turn the ball over. Eight years later he’s a 3rd string back up.

  18. Roberto Says:

Oh really? Is Bruce Arians the guy who brought the winning spirit of the last 2 years? You are blessed to have Tom Brady. Next year Tom Brady will play for the Dolphins and the Super Bowl for them may be possible again.
I think the Dolphins wanted Brady in 2022 because of the 50th anniversary of the perfect season in 1972.

  19. Bosch Says:

Without a doubt, the loss of Arians is the reason for the drop off. But what is his role now? Does he even half one? Or is it just a title and a paycheck to say thank you for your service.

  20. directdriver Says:

Just let Brady call his own plays. Just by watching I could almost tell which playcall is Brady’s and which is BL. Brady is all about situational football to win the game not about stats. That’s why he’s a winner. I saw him being giddy in games just to hand the ball off 20 times per drive because it’s working. Whatever it takes to win, instead of being cute on design.

  21. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    Winning

  22. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Brady can’t call ALL THE PLAYS. That’s naive to assume and impossible to do.
However Brady could and should call as many plays as he can handle within a game.

    Fire Leftrwich

  23. Listnfrmafar Says:

Leftnut tried to lose the game. He sent in a personnel group that didn’t know the play which forced Brady to call the TO. He had the D on their heels. The man is clueless to situational football.

  24. John Olmstead Says:

A healthy Ryan Jensen would work wonders about now.

  25. captivajim Says:

I really hope we look back in january , and say that the Rams game was our turning point ….Romo is right ,the younger players now see how its done , you play All 60 minutes, you don’t slack off, you don’t give up when ther’s still time on the clock, you confidence to fight back as long as Brady is qb ..

  26. Bucamania Says:

Let’s face it. The free agents Licht brought in have been hurt and horrible.

    Julio Jones – always injured
    Akeim Hicks – always injured
    Russell Gage – always injured
    Kyle Rudolf – washed
    Keanu Neal – washed

The only decent free agent pickup so far has been Logan Ryan. And he’s out hurt.

Shaq Mason was a trade and been good.

Then you add in poor drafts the past two years. Only 4 starters from that group (JTS, Hainsey, Otton, Camarda). One is a punter and the others are serviceable at best.

The talent level has really dropped off.
