Chris Godwin Laments Bucs’ Lack Of Aggression

November 29th, 2022

“Ryan, I’ll give you a lifetime supply of TB12 supplements and Brady Brand gear if you come back.”

Some say a team takes on the identity of its head coach.

Todd Bowles is a blitz-heavy, get-after-it defensive playcaller, but he’s not that guy on offense.

Maybe that’s a shred of what ails the anemic Tampa Bay rushing attack. Bucs leading receiver Chris Godwin (60 catches) saw a little softness in the run game on Sunday in Cleveland, so he told the Buccaneers Radio Network yesterday.

“We have to be more aggressive,” Godwin said of the run game. “You know, it’s all around. I thought everybody kind of took their turn of not making their block or not being in the right spot. And it puts you in a tough position.”

Yeah, it’s rare for an opponent to walk off the field and call the Bucs a badass, punch-you-in-the-mouth offense.

Godwin also added that he thinks the team not only must eliminate mistakes but do better bouncing back “from self-inflicted wounds.”

It’s Year 4 of the offense and the Bucs were coming off a bye week against a team with a poor run defense. There should have been a lot more precision and fight in the offense.

Better luck next week. Hopefully.

You guys are nuts if you don’t think Leftwich is 100% responsible for this offense. Bowles has as much to do with this offense as Gruden had to do with the 2002 defense. Leftwich handles the offense, Bowles handles the defense.

That is not to excuse the gutless Bowles for his stupid, cowarderly, low-T disaster at the end of the Browns game, but stop thinking Bowles is the one telling Leftwich to run it up the middle on 1st down and then throw a screen on 2nd down, or the one telling Leftwich to run the same exact trick play only a few plays apart. That’s 100% idiot Leftwich at work. I’ve said for years, if Leftwich ever got a head coaching job, he’d run the wishbone, he’s that boring and conservative. The only reason they throw is because Brady is here, if it was Trask at QB, they’d lead the league in rushing attempts, while still being last in rushing yards.

Leftwich had one other year as an OC without Arians, in 2018 in Arizona, and they were #32 in offense.

Leftwich stinks, and the fact he’s such an idiot that he thought he could turn down the Jags head coaching job because he’d have his pick of the litter this next offseason, it just proves how delusional he is.

  3. Casual Observer Says:

Coach said that he wasn’t more aggressive during that last drive (not calling a TO) because he feared an interception. Brady just passed about 400 times without one. What were the chances? Doesn’t add up.

    Brian Flores or Eric Bienemy.

I really wonder if Bowles is trying to protect Leftwich by deflecting criticism to himse, like he said, what is the dumbest, most outrageously stupid thing I can say that will get the heat off my staff.

If that was his plan, it’s working, and it’s truly selfless since it makes Bowles look like the dumbest, most clueless coach in the NFL.

If that was not his plan, and he actually thought that, he needs to retire, right after he fires Leftwich, and he needs to do it today.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So…..Bowles was afraid to call a TO because he feared an interception…..so he believed that the Browns could score with no time but we couldn’t……

Makes zero sense…..so that means he didn’t trust our offense or our defense…..

  7. Jeff Says:

Low Energy Todd can’t get his team pumped up for the games. Pathetic. Clean house!

  8. Thisisouryear!! Says:

Munch- Everything goes through the head coach. Bowles said in the offseason his hand would be in the offense. This is not last year’s offense at all. This has Bowles written all over it.

  9. unbelievable Says:

The coach is clueless, and cowardly. Doesn’t even have the stones to admit he messed up, and instead makes this lame excuse that he was scared, which is even more cowardly!

Lovie Smith 2.0, except Lovie inherited an awful team, and Bowles inherited a fantastic one. So he’s actually worse than Lovie.

I really wanted to believe in Bowles, but his cowardly behavior, along with zero accountability for his underperforming coaches (Leftwich, Armstrong) leaves me no choice. He has got to go. Great coordinator, but a head coach he is not.

  10. SPARKY Says:

The whole team needs to be more aggressive, but mostly the coaches. I admit I was one of the guys who thought we didn’t need Suh anymore, sorry #8. But watching him play for Philly the other night, you could see the intensity on every play he was out there. We miss Jensen for the same reason.

    Goatfarmer Says:
    Brian Flores or Eric Bienemy.

    ————

Based on everything you read and hear about Bieniemy, he’s a Leftwich clone. Someone who was put in place to run someone else’s offense, and the second they leave, they’re going to be exposed as an empty suit.

Now, with that said, I have no doubt Bieniemy could do a better job as OC than Leftwich, I don’t see how it’s possible to do a worse job. But Bieniemy has not got a HC job for a reason.

Brian Flores, uh, no. He seems pretty universally hated by his team plus you’d want the next coach to be offensive minded.

Next year Brady will be gone and the Bucs are in legit cap hell (unlike the fake cap hell Gruden always complained about being in because he wanted to sign 5 different injured washed up old offensive lineman and trade for 4 more QBs). Next year the Bucs should keep Bowles and Leftwich since they’re proven losers and you want to get that #1 pick in 2024, then build the team from there, that’s when you match a new HC and a top draft pick QB.

  13. ElioT Says:

It’s shocking how a team with so many veteran coaches and players can be so flat and lifeless.

Everything is a reflection of the HC’s mentality.

    So disappointing.

    ————

That’s literally NOT how it works. Bowles was given this job late in the offseason (by NFL standards), way past the point where coaches are getting their own guys. In any case, he got Leftwich as part of this deal.

Also, YES, this is not last years offense. That’s 100% LEFTWICH. The guy is a complete idiot. Did you miss over the years as Arians called him out publicly, saying he needed to open things up, he needed to not be so predictable, to mix it up. This IS Leftwich at work. Has nothing to do with Bowles, who is completely uninvolved on offense other than to say, ‘don’t turn the ball over’ – that’s probably as involved as Bowles as been this year on offense.

Bowles didn’t pick this staff, he was given Arians team, and he absolutely was told Leftwich stays and calls the offense. You think the Glazers don’t remember Dungy? The issue was the Glazers aren’t paying attention to week to week football and they thought Leftwich would just run Arians offense – instead, we get Leftwich’s offense, which is the most predictable offense in football.

  15. HC Grover Says:

The Bowles bye week means go to the beach and say bye to football. Good Grief he is awful. My bet is he trots out the same old prevent plan on Sunday.

  16. HC Grover Says:

Munch…You do not know those statements to be facts do you? Or is that just your impressions?

  17. Bucamania Says:

We all agree with you Chris. Todd is coaching scared and it’s tough to watch. Can’t imagine how tough it is to play for a coach like that. No wonder the identity of this team is stubborn and soft.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

HC Grover – I know them for facts, because it’s very very simple to just look at how the coaches came in, look at all the stupid nonsense Leftwich has done since he’s been here, look at statements by Arians, and look at the calendar when Arians ‘retired’ and why he did so.

The team was supposed to be on autopilot this year, which would mean Leftwich would get a HC job, and Arians could take credit for the biggest scam in the history of the NFL, getting that talentless idiot a HC job.

  19. Rod Munch Says:

If you want a true villain from this last offseason, just look to Jacksonville.

The morons running that team actually wanted Leftwich as their head coach, all reports I saw said he was their top pick. Then, Leftwich, being exceptionally delusional, demanded that he get his own hand picked GM, something the Jags refused to budge on.

Because the stupid Jags couldn’t give Leftwich his GM pick, the Bucs ended up having to keep Leftwich.

This season would be completely different if the Bucs had even an average OC who didn’t call the same 4 plays over and over and over again (in the same order). I think with just a replacement level OC, not even a good one, just an average on, the Bucs are likely at least 7-4.

If you had Arians running the team, they’re 10-1 — and if you think otherwise, look at the losses and tell me which of those games, outside of KC, that Arians loses.

  20. Ed Kerber Says:

I have to defend Dungy. I’d be conservative in my play calls if I had Trent Dilfer and no talent at WR too. I don’t think Dungy would be this conservative with actual offensive firepower.

  21. Architek Says:

    Black Monday special countdown!

    Bye Leftwich.

  22. DrunkinYbor Says:

Great running to start then it’s back to up the guy. Bowles motto snatching defeat from the jaws of victory! And hope we can cope or save timeouts it’s a strategy thats stout, or let’s lose with a whimper and make out fan sicker, or yes I’m scared why is that weird, or don’t try to win hold hands and grin, or let’s make a excuses in our pants is poopes 💩

  23. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I was gonna jump on the “Gloom & Doom” band wagon with y’all, but it was jam-packed. No room whatsoever.

I’ll wait, and try to jump on the next wagon. I just hope they sell beer on it.

  24. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

Goatfarmer, I think those two should have been considered B4 they gave the HC gig to Todd. I definitely think they should top the short list, now!

  25. Bucs since 76 Says:

Bowles wants to win with his defense so he can take all the credit. That’s why he didn’t call timeouts so his defense could win it in overtime. The problem was in overtime his defense didn’t win the game they were worn out and they gave up the winning drive. With the play calling our offense has one hand tied behind their backs. Fire Bowles and Leftwich now. Bowles has lost the the players they are not playing for him anymore.

  26. Bucsfan13 Says:

Wow! Godwin is usually so laid back. For him to call out the offensive line is big! Brady has same the same thing. This team is soft!!

  27. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I’m not making excuses for Bowles, but a lot of DC turned HC, struggle with game management. It’s just not their forte’.

Vic Fangio, a great DC turned HC in Denver, is a recent example.

Reason being (I think) most DC’s (basically) have their back to field a lot, getting their guys ready to go, when offensive game/clock management stuff is going on. Their worry is just getting defense ready, or they won’t DC long.

Just my opinion, other opinions will vary, I don’t care.

  28. alton d green Says:

If you guys know anything at all about Brady with Bilichick, you know they play situational football. They adjust to the “situation” that they are facing. You know like 4th and short to win the game. not once but TWICE to win the game. Todd standing there like weekend at Bernies and let the clock tick down with 3 timeouts in his jock strap. They only needed approx 10 yds for a FG try to WIN THE GAME. I say we start a go fund me page to pay Bruce enough to get rid of both coaches. If 10 fans donate just $1, that’s twice as much as we need

  29. PassingThru Says:

What Godwin said about the O-Line echos what Romo said: on every single offensive snap, at least one player makes a mental mistake. Blocks at the LOS are missed. Keny blocks on LBs at the second level are missed. WRs run the wrong route, or run soft routes.

This offense is absolutely offensive to.my eyes. All those mistakes are from poor coaching, or from poor decisions made by the Licht who should shoulder some of the blame as well.

  30. Anthony Says:

Playing not to lose and playing to win. Two different things. Time to play to win. Mondays game will decide the Bucs season

  31. captivajim Says:

Godwin is the best player we’ve got.. my memory is , given the surgery & rehab last spring ,that he signed a 1 yr contact ? ? If Brady leaves, and bowles is still HC ; Godwin will likely move on –he’ll certainly have offers to consider .

  32. Jason Says:

Yea right like we are going to be able to run better against the Saints. That ain’t happening. The Saints shut down our run game everytime

  33. NEfan Says:

I freaking hate watching this team. The last two years we’re fun. Is Bowles that clueless that he didn’t see what Brady did in the last TWO games they played? His excuse doesn’t hold water, he is clearly unqualified to lead a NFL team, he’s proved it twice before. BA should be tarred & feathered on Clearwater beach.

  34. Crickett Baker Says:

He also said something about “wrong play at the wrong time”. I wonder what he was saying..

  35. steele Says:

There is nothing “get after it” about Bowles, as either a D coordinator or HC. Please. He is, however, a “use sarcasm” guy.

  36. miss match Says:

I can’t tell you how brutal it is watching the Bucs this season! I thought we threw away McKays playbook (run run pass kick) I do believe there is a voodoo curse on the Bucs, I can’t believe a coaching staff could be so inept without there being a good excuse! How could Gronk desert us in our hour of need. Come on Gronk man up and get back on the field. Come on Glasers the coaching staff is floundering give Bruce what he wants to take over.
