Byron Leftwich Vows Bucs Offense Will Get Better

November 11th, 2022

Bucs OC Byron Leftwich.

It is Nov. 11. So with half a season complete, fans have a great idea what teams are all about.

As Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells famously said, you are what your record says you are.

The Bucs are averaging 60.7 rushing yards per game. That’s the worst for any NFL team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. Calling the Bucs’ running game bad is an insult to teams who struggle to run the ball.

Yesterday failing Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich was asked why he runs so much in the red zone given the glaring evidence the offense cannot run the ball. The Bucs average 18 points a game, eighth-worst in scoring despite having top-shelf talent.

Leftwich vowed things will improve, especially the run game.

“[With] things that we’re working on, we believe we’ll get better in the near future,” Leftwich said.

Pardon Joe for being dubious. As Joe has stated many times, if Leftwich actually knew how to fix this offense, he would have done so by now. So Leftwich claims the Bucs will be better. What is he basing this on besides hope? Why should anyone believe that?

The Bucs have a bye week after Sunday’s game. When the Bucs resume play at Cleveland on Thanksgiving Weekend, if the Bucs can’t run the ball then, well, there’s no reason to believe Leftwich can solve the problem. Provided he’s still employed next week.

Ok…you should know by now dude….

  2. Leopold Stotch Says:

I’ll belive it when I see it

  3. Defense Rules Says:

The only thing more predictable than Byron’s response to that question is when & where he’ll have our RBs run against Seattle come Sunday.

  4. Steven Says:

Way’s to Fix the Run Game:

    1. Start White
    2. Stop running up the gut every first down
    3. Use the Pass to open up the run & not vice versa

  5. adam from ny Says:

i hope the entire team top to botton, left to right, plays well so the team can enter a new phase of the season…

i have the bucs winning this game…just as bobby fenton said, i too can not see the seahawks at 7-3…wtf…are they a league powerhouse – i think not…they’re much more of a 6-4 team…

also i’m hoping the bucs smarten up and rock the all pewter unis in munich…

it’s time to get busy in pewter..their best uni is being under-rocked wtf…!

also i’d like to see the seahawks in their color rush uniforms as well…the all florescent lime greens…

the bucs and seahawks have the best color rush unis in the league…

also has anyone noticed that the bucs didn’t release a uniform schedule this season…they certainly had a uni schedule last year

  6. August 1976 Buc Says:

Will the Leopard change his spots?

Remains to be seen, talk is cheap.

    To much Neanderthal predictable football.

    Hope for change.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  7. Don’t listen to what he Says:

    Flat brimmed fool

    Show it on the field

  8. AKicknTheBucNuts Says:

    To BL: Yawn.

  9. SufferingSince76 Says:

Why even waste your time asking this stiff any questions? His answers are as inventive as his play calling.

  10. Beej Says:

They see our formation, they instantly know what we’re gonna do. Maybe….. Do entirely DIFFERENT stuff out of the same formations?

  11. Since76 Says:

Teams know what our play is on first down based on formation 9 out of 10 times. That is one hell of an advantage for a defensive coordinator. Its a no brainer our offense is 3rd and long do often.

  12. FortMyersDave Says:

Well, Buc fans did not expect to hear Byron say that the offense would continue to suck. However, as a Buc fan I do hope the O pulls a rabbit out of its hat and wakes up pronto, hopefully before the bye. @ Adam from NY: I too hope the Hawks are 6 dash 4 after Sunday and hope Bobby Fenton is right. Perhaps Brady can manage to break this international curse the Bucs seem to have where they have come out flat and been boatraced by the Pats, Bears and Carolina (With GMC if I recall) in the UK, the team was never prepared. Maybe Munich will provide better luck and the Seahawks suffer serious jetlag. Hope Joe is pounding some quality German liters and enjoying the cuisine while he is over there!

How to fix the Bucs run game

Bring Marpet back out of retirement
Start Ryan Jensen (even with bad knee)
    Trade Cappa for Shaq Mason
    Bring back Rojo
    Let Brady call the offense

  14. FortMyersDave Says:

Beej: good logic on the misdirection angle but that might be well past what Lord Byron is capable of throwing together; now if TB12 were to audible out or improvise on his own, well that could catch the D with their pants down until their coaches make adjustments which is something our coaching staff seems incapable of doing.

  15. I’m not tired anymore we just won the Super Bowl!! Says:

Let your actions speak son. Go Bucs!

  16. DungyDance Says:

More golden nuggets of wisdom from the professor of offensive brilliance. How does he do it? Hey, by the way, Hallmark has a card for someone that says “get well soon.” Incredible genius.

  17. orlbucfan Says:

Please, no more of that stupid play to CG14 that looks like a lateral. That’s a pick6 waiting to happen. I HATE that call!

  18. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Throw my two cents in here on running game. As well as what is mentioned from fellow bucs fans…. please spread the offensive line out more. Make some room!!

  19. tampabuscsbro Says:

    Better then laughing at stats….

  20. A Says:

This is from the blocked FG drive (Rams game)

So we can’t run the ball at all – then we go with White and of course we run on 1st down, but wait – we’re actually gaining yards! Ok, so what does master mind BL do on 2nd down? We run again – see the results!

R.White up the middle to TB 41 for 7 yards
R.White up the middle to TB 41 for no gain

R.White right tackle to LA 47 for 6 yards
R.White right tackle to LA 47 for no gain

R.White left guard to LA 33 for 5 yards
K.Vaughn up the middle to LA 34 for -1 yards

  21. T REX Says:

This is worse than Lovie Smith

    SMDH

  22. BKBuc Says:

    JUST DO IT!

  23. OrlandoBucFan Says:

In the last two games, our offense was relatively sharp at the start of each game. Is it too much to ask that we continue that momentum beyond two drives?

  24. jugheadfla Says:

    Less talk, more do!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. JBBUCS_06 Says:

Start the game in 2min offense, like we finished against the Rams. Take advantage of that feeling. Less thinking, just doing. Then run from 11 personnel package.

Seattle runs from quads formation. 🤷🏿‍♂️

  26. Goatfarmer Says:

ByeMoron. Wave out of the back of the pickup truck. Idjut gonna idjut. Derrrrr.

  27. BillyBucco Says:

It’s like BL is surprised when we run it well, so he calls it again.
You can’t be a good O Coordinator in this league if you expect failure.

The defense dictates what we do and it should be the offense.
BL just basically tells Brady to find the open man every play.

That last drive was well executed called plays and that was the difference.
Can he do that the whole game?
Can he do that the 1st drive?

No and No. Time is out. He has to go!

  28. JimmyJack Says:

Vows mean nothing. Just ask my wife.

  29. Bucswin Says:

Late bloomers. This team is. Hopefully. Many a team has backed into the playoffs. Hope is all we got at this point.

  30. Your Mom Says:

By not running the ball in the red zone, he’d be admitting that he’s a lousy coordinator that can’t scheme a running attack.

    So, pride.

  31. bucs4life Says:

How? He can’t sell a play fake or call a single good drive. Heck, most of the time we can’t even get a single first down.

  32. unbelievable Says:

Translation: “we’re gonna keep doing the same thing over and over”

  33. Vinny from Vermont Says:

“[With] things that we’re working on, we believe we’ll get better in the near future,” Leftwich said.

Damn, in what world does he live in that he cannot understand that
    his words are…
    1. Less than inspiring.
    2. Reminiscent of the same old BS that we have come to expect.
    3. So vague that they (as always) meaningless.

I don’t know who writes his scripts, but what’s wrong with…
“Buc fans will not see the same predictable play calling from me in Sunday’s game. And…if I cannot make good on that, you won’t need to fire me, I’ll do what’s best for the team and Quit.”

Now THAT would at least inspire some hope for the future!!

  34. Browsing from DC Says:

There’s no excuse for how pathetic our run game is. We have good backs. We have capable blockers. I don’t know how BL and his O-line and RB coaches can’t make it work at least to the point of being “average”. Like Joe said, if he hasn’t figured it out by now….

The o-line is finally looking like the revolving door is done so continuity and communication should improve. Stop being predictable and expand the plays and formations. These are NFL players. They should be able to grasp new concepts and execute them. We really need Jensen back. Maybe he can remind them that being bruisers in the running game is the greatest source of pride for the big guys up front.
