Bruce Arians Talks Tom Brady 2023 — In Tampa

November 18th, 2022

Tom Brady

Not only is Tom Brady acting and performing like a guy who wants to play quarterback next season, plenty of people at Bucs headquarters would wager he does.

There’s good reason to believe Brady will be back under center for the Bucs in 2023, says Bucco Bruce Arians.

“He loves it here,” Arians told JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman this week. “He loves his teammates, his coaches and the organization. If he decides to play next season, I think it will be with the Buccaneers.”

Brady staying in close proximity to his children would be another major determining factor if he plans on a 24th NFL season, Arians said.

As of today, Brady’s two youngest children live in Florida.

In a feature this week at TheAthletic.com, Arians detailed that he’s close to Brady even in his current role as a front office advisor.

“In practice, even in quarterback drills, he’s over there competing to win the damn drills every day,” Arians said of Brady. “I still spend a lot of time with him, but not as much probably as I used to. In a week, we maybe spend an hour talking about football and another hour talking about life.”

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network this week, QB coach Clyde Christensen painted Brady as a guy in love with practice and his foot on the gas — still improving, working with Todd Bowles on shaping practice and enjoying spending extra time teaching and developing center Robert Hainsey.

JoeBucsFan.com talked to a Bucs team source regarding the possibility of soon-to-be free agent Brady returning in 2023.

“Everybody here knows Brady is one year at a time, but what you see every day is a guy who acts like he wants to keep playing,” the source said. “This is his team, and the team loves him. He’s heavily invested in many ways. It’s hard to imagine he’d find a better situation with another franchise. And he’s been playing great for three years.”

Brady playing next season, and playing for the Bucs, seems like wishful thinking. But it sure appears more likely that it did in mid-August or mid-October.

At his current pace, Brady will lead the NFC in passing this season and eat the fewest sacks in the conference, And he’ll be back in the playoffs with elite receivers around him.

That’s a tough job to walk away from if you want to keep playing.

    GO BUCS

  2. geno711 Says:

Gronk spent an hour and 1/2 at USAA this week, answering questions.

I understand from friends that I have there that there is video from some of the employees.

One of my friends asked specifically if Arians was up in an office somewhere or regularly on the field during practice.

Gronk said that Arians was on the field a lot and not in the office as much.

I am becoming more and more convinced that Arians missing the Pittsburgh and Carolina games is a big reason our offense was totally in the pig pen.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

I just saw the trailer for that movie Brady was working on, ’80 for Brady’…

    WOW does it look awful.

Tom’s people need to do a better job bringing him projects. Unless his goal was to dump the supermodel to do commercials for Depends, I don’t know what the hell he’s doing.

Seriously, that could be one of the most d-chilling things I’ve ever seen in my life.

Blame the ex, say it was her idea, you did it to please her… Just don’t tell me it was your idea to do that movie.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

As for Brady in 2023 — you know, assuming he doesn’t become a big movie star after his movie ’80 for Brady’ makes $26 on its opening weekend.

Anywho, bringing Brady back for 2023 is going to take some remarkable cap creativity. There are ways to do it, but it involves cutting a number of guys, all with post-June 1st designations. But if I’m the Bucs, I’m doing whatever it takes.

Plus, for the love of God, we need to see Brady wear the orange uniforms. It’s still disgusting that the slobs at Nike said they couldn’t get around to making orange uniforms this year because they were too busy. What a-holes. That’s why you shouldn’t ever do business with woke companies, they do a crappy job and they’re lazy.

  5. SOEbuc Says:

We’ll see what happens. This is a great franchise

  6. Vlad The Impaler Says:

That would be awesome if Brady stays a Buc next year. Probably depends a lot on how the Bucs finish out this season though.

LOL Brady was named with other tycoons in a crypto lawsuit today. That’s how big the GOAT is. He transcends football….. yet he defines football.

    LFG

  7. ‘79 Defense Says:

    Rod,

Absolutely agree about Brady wearing the orange. We’ve got to see him out there in it just once. So ridiculous that it didn’t happen this year.

If you’re the Bucs, and as unusual as it might be, ask him to do a quick photo shoot wearing it and give it to him as appreciation for all he’s done for the organization. For crying out loud, Brady even posted on social media about bringing back the orange. The fans would be so jacked to see it and you’ve also covered yourself if he’s not back next year.

  8. adam from ny Says:

lets get these all pewters worn and rockin’ already…wtf is going on

and i would like to see tommy b and the bucs of 2023 wearing the creamsicle dreamsicles next year…

    not once…but twice!

  9. adam from ny Says:

    @ rod munch:

you probably know i keep up on all thing bucs jerseys and unis…

i never got wind of nike saying they got too busy to make orange jerseys for this year…

    is it really true ??

because that would be a total crock of sh!t and there’d have to be something else controlling that narrative…

they make such crappy sports gear, you’d thing they’d just bust them out quick and fast at any one of their sweatshops

  10. adam from ny Says:

on another note i preferred when adidas had the bucs gear contract, back in the dungy days…

if they still were making bucs gear now, it would be pretty nice stuff…they’ve leveled up a bit since the late 90’s to early 2000’s…

it’s actually really corny the way the entire league is now under one umbrella of nike…and that they force the players to wear certain things at certain times…and particular hats during certain times and games…the nfl has this league wide dress code than no one ever discusses and i’m guessing that if you don’t fall in line and wear the designated gear and hats at the designated times, you get fined…and they certainly have the coaches doing it too, not just the players…

it’s like obey the team uniform or get fined…they have to wear only this season’s released designated team nike wear most of the time…it’s kinda crazy actually…

in practice or at the podium they can wear older versions and other years of the gear…

but the contract must say you can only wear 2022 gear during games and on the sidelines…it seems like it has to be approved and all…they’ve got everyone dressing like most uniform worker jobs nowadays…it wasn’t like this at all years ago…

i’ve never seen anyone talk about this or articles written on it either…

it’s like some taboo subject or something…but they certainly do have everyone dressing the same…soldier up or get fined…

i wish i knew the details of how this all works, but as i said, no one ever talks about it

  11. Defense Rules Says:

BA … “I still spend a lot of time with him, but not as much probably as I used to. In a week, we maybe spend an hour talking about football and another hour talking about life.”

THAT is the most informative line coming out of BA in quite awhile. Think about it; TWO hours a week with Tom Brady. Not bad for 2 old guys who the media’s tried to convince everyone dislike each other & 1 got the other fired. Hmmm.

  12. Kentucky Buc Says:

I never bought the Brady getting BA fired line. Just media BS. Another hot take from idiots. Everything I’ve ever read or heard about Brady is he is a total team guy who respects his coaches and owners. All media are completely out of control. Every story is from an unnamed source. They just make it up as they go .

  13. adam from ny Says:

i’d really like to see the bucs play on thanksgiving day next season with sir tom gravy at the helm (in creamsicles)…

they can’t play dallas or detroit (i already checked the future schedule and it can’t happen)…

if i’m correct dallas and detroit only other teams on thanksgiving…

it would be nice to be slotted in the 8:20 slot for the night game vs maybe green bay or minnesota, on the road, because we used to play them in orange all the time back in the central division days…

and if it’s a thanksgiving home game in creamsicle, let it be the monsters of the midway, da bears!

  14. adam from ny Says:

if i’m correct dallas and detroit only ***host*** other teams on thanksgiving…

  15. JimmyfromNY Says:

Cutting players ? Maybe some like most teams. The cap is a joke in the NFL. Look at the Saints and Chiefs. The Bucs I’m out sure have some dead money coming off. If he comes back it will still be a playoff roster.

  16. Beej Says:

They reworked a bunch of contracts to get thru THIS year. They’ll rework them again NEXT year

  17. orlbucfan Says:

    Licht knows what he’s doing.

  18. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

IT WOULD BE AWESOME TO SEE TOM BRADY & THE BUC’S IN THOSE ORANGE CREAMSICLE UNIFORMS AGAIN..AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE !..I WAS THERE AT THE BEGINNING IN 76 WHEN WE & SEATTLE GOT OUR EXPANSION FRANCHISE’S..MY DAD & I WENT TO EVERY HOME GAME THOSE 1ST 2 SEASONS & SUFFERED THROUGH THE 0-26 LOSING STREAK TILL WE WON OUR FIRST GAME IN NEW ORLEANS 33-14 & FOLLOWED IT UP WITH A SEASON FINAL HOME VICTORY OVER THE THEN ST.LOUIS CARDINALS LED BY QB JIM HART & BEAT THEM 17-10 TO FINISH OUR 2ND SEASON WITH 2 STRAIGHT WINS..I WATCHED US GROW WITH DOUG WILLIAMS AT QUARTERBACK, DEFEAT DICK VERMEIL & RON JAWORSKI IN OUR 1ST HOME PLAYOFF GAME IN 1979, JUST AFTER BEATING THE K.C.CHIEFS IN THE FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAME IN A MONSOON AT “THE BIG SOMBRERO” ( OLD TAMPA STADIUM) 3-0 ON A FIELD GOAL BY NEIL O’DONOHUE IN THE 4TH QUARTER ( MY DAD & I WERE DRENCHED GIVING EACH OTHER HIGH FIVES MAYBE 20 FEET FROM THE GOAL POSTS AS THE KICK PROPELLED US TO THE PLAYOFFS FOR THE 1ST TIME IN FRANCHISE HISTORY IN 1979..AFTER WE DEFEATED DICK VERMIEL’S EAGLES 24-17 AT HOME IN OUR 1ST PLAYOFF GAME AT HOME TO THE L.A.RAMS WITH JACK YOUNGBLOOD OF THE RAMS PLAYING ON A BROKEN LEG..WE ULTIMATELY GOT SHUT OUT 9-0 ( 3 FIELD GOALS ) IN THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME..DOUG WILLIAMS WANTED A SUBSTANTIAL RAISE AFTER THE SEASON, BUT THE LATE HUGH CULVERHOUSE REFUSED TO PAY HIM SO HE LEFT FOR THE USFL THE FOLLOWING SEASON…

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We will have to restructure all contracts and Brady will have 5 voided years….but Licht will find a way to get it done…..
If we suffer FA losses, it will be on the defense……we should sign Dean but all others are vulnerable.

I’ve always thought it made zero sense for Brady to bounce around teams in his final years…..it lacks class….if he plays, he stays.

  20. NEfan Says:

I don’t believe Brady had BA removed, I believe BA took the HC job to lock it up for Bowles. Once Brady found out the Brazilian bimbo was cheating on him he unretired. Unfortunately Bucs fans I can see him wearing black & silver next season saving Josh McDaniels job.

  21. alton green Says:

That’s fine Bruce but don’t sit on a wall and have a great fall. How about you keeping your pie hole shut when talking about the best player in history. It’s like when a child brings home an A+ for months and then brings home an A-. Do you call him/her/it a dumbass??????

  22. Beej Says:

Julio not likely here next year, there’s $6 million saved. Starting to wonder about Lenny’s future

  23. Oneilbuc Says:

It makes zero sense to bring back a 46 year old quarterback this is the worst and most desperate franchise and fan base I’ve ever seen. A fan base who has no pride for the team who believes without Brady we can’t do nothing and we have no hope of winning. And if he does come back next year all it will be is a bunch of excuses on while he’s not playing well it will be every one else fault but his. I see why Skip calls this franchise and fan base the suckaneers.

  24. JD Says:

@Oneilbuc.. you are nothing but a troller faking fan. This is not about being desperate or not having pride. This is about having a known quantity at quarterback and not wanting to move into an unknown quantity that may take years to develop or worse even like decades. Maybe if you were a real bucs fan, you would remember that last time we had a champion qb prior to Brady.

Shut the hell op and go back to following your team the saints!

  25. Oneilbuc Says:

JD . It’s lot of y’all on here that’s Patriots fans who I know will be gone once Brady leaves. Brady is 45 years old and he plays like a 45 year old quarterback this team is set up perfectly for a young quarterback to come in play with a real shot of becoming good for the next 10 years or more. I have more pride in the team than you. I believe in the team winning you believe in Brady and Brady only. So you need to go back to New England.

  26. NEfan Says:

Oneilsuckyall, playing like a 45 yr old QB, I guess that’s a compliment for you. 2nd in the NFL in passing to undoubtedly the best QB in the league Mahomes. Leads in tight throw percentage and most of all the ultimate teammate. If you watched Roger’s last night, he was horrible, Brady has never had a game where he missed that many open revievers. Bucs could have signed him for $55mm or Russell or Watson. Don’t be foolish he still plays at a high level elite QB. I see him going to the Raiders to save McDaniels and play in a real offense with a real OC. Man you are a hater!!!

  27. Beej Says:

He’s one of the best QB’s in the NFL, and would be next year, in addition his teammates love him. Let’s definitely get rid of this guy

  28. Lamarcus Says:

Naw. We need to move on from Brady and most importantly start winning without him. More likely Brady is retiring but If he decided to return…trade him to Jaguars

Look because we won 2 games in a row doesn’t change the fact with me on what I saw.. a 3-5 team that’s only in it because of a weak division. Any other year we would be done.

According to Bucs here, We have a great GM, Coach, players, defense, fan base, receivers, etc…why not?

  29. NEfan Says:

Lamarcus, so who do you believe will take the Bucs to the playoffs next season? Because unless you getting Mahomes at this point there is no one better in the league. Tua (best wr’s in the league), Hurts (top D and oline & AJ Brown is better than any Bucs WR), Jackson (he needs a play action running game to succeed) etc are going no where with BL as the OC.

  30. Craig Says:

I am not talking about Brady in 2023. I am not because I don’t believe he will be back. Missing a bunch of training camp and taking a weekend off during the season don’t tell me about a happy player.

Besides, he will be in court a lot next season, had to practice like that.

  31. unbelievable Says:

If he does want to play another year, the only other team I see being a consideration for him could be San Fran. Miami seems pretty set with McDaniels and Tua.

  32. NEfan Says:

McDaniels is HC for Raiders, Bradys old OC. I could see them dumping Carr who has won nothing . Maybe Brady recruits Evan’s, Godwin or Otton to go for the ride. For all you haters, imagine if he went to Carolina, Saints or Atlanta? I would love to read the posts that season.

  33. Jmarkbuc Says:

    O’Neill

“Plays like a 45 yr old”

Jaboo can’t even beat out Andy Dalton. Allen is just being nice by saying JW’s back will keep him out… Translation… he can be a back up but he’ll never start here.

  34. Beej Says:

What free agent quarterback is out there whom we can sign in the off-season? What college senior is out there whom we can draft in the offseason? (AND be ready to start) What is the likelihood of Trask being the man?

  35. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF … ‘we should sign Dean but all others are vulnerable.’

Does that include Hicks? LVD also? Others who are FAs include RNR, Gholston, Nelson, Edwards, SMB, Ryan and several others. That’s like half of our starting defense TBBF. Can’t replace them all with rookies. And veterans would surely want more than what these guys are now making.

We’ve actually got a very cheap defense compared to many teams. Look at the salary CAP hits for these guys THIS year …

    o Dean … $2.8 mil
    o LVD … $14.8 mil (plus $6.9 mil in 2023 voided contract)
    o Hicks … $2.4 mil (plus $4.9 mil in 2023 voided contract)
    o RNR … $3.3 mil
    o Gholston … $2.1 mil (plus $2.4 mil in 2023 voided contract)
    o Nelson … $1.2 mil
    o Edwards … $2.7 mil
    o SMB … $3.4 mil
    o Ryan … $1.1 mil

Yes, we got away real cheap on our defense. That’s 9 players right there who’ll be FAs & up to 7 of them are starters & the others are key rotational guys. So IF we were to not re-sign LVD, Hicks & Gholston next year, we’d save $20.2 mil but still have to pay them $14.2 mil (voided contracts) AND have to replace all 3 of them as starters. I don’t think the $6 mil difference that we saved would accomplish that. And of the 6 others who are now costing us $14.5 mil total this year, up to 4 of them starters. I don’t see how we can expect to replace 4 defensive starters for that paltry amount.

Looks to me like JL has run out of rabbits to pull out of the hat. Bucs are reminding me more & more of the federal government (running up the federal debt) except that we’re not allowed to print salary CAP dollars. But hey, that’s tomorrow’s problem. For today we need to follow Bobby McFerrin’s advice in his old song ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’.

  36. Crickett Baker Says:

I don’t understand why so many want the orange uni’s back. We lost SOO many games wearing those I wouldn’t care if I never saw a Buc in one again. Why would you? As far as Brady goes, if he does want to play next year there is NO WAY he would leave the Bucs. He has his “guys” now and likes the organization. If he wants to play another season those are some of the reasons. He will stay with the Bucs without a doubt.

  37. Joe Says:

I don’t understand why so many want the orange uni’s back. We lost SOO many games wearing those I wouldn’t care if I never saw a Buc in one again. Why would you?

First off, they were way cool uniforms.

Second, Joe remembers the Bucs playing in the NFC championship with those same unis. It’s not like the Bucs lost all the time with those.

Didn’t the Bucs make the playoffs three times with the creamsicles?

Let’s not confuse the creamsicles with those Jameis Winston/Gerald McCoy alarm clock things.

  38. Buc1987 Says:

    Exactly Joe!

    Bring back the creams!

  39. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Those fools who deny the Orangesickle Uniforms will be impaled upon spears and placed at the entrance to 1 Buc as a warning to others!

  40. CleanHouse Says:

I love the fickleness of the writers for this website. Sky was falling two games ago, now we’re on a path to the playoffs. 5–5 barely. Let’s see what happens.
I hope it’s 12-5 on the way to the playoffs, but I’m not holding my breath based on what I’ve seen.

  41. Hodad Says:

If we couldn’t win it all last year with Brady, and if we don’t win it all this year with Brady, what are the chances we win it all next year with a 46 year old Brady? You either get better, or you get worse. So far this year, Brady, and the Bucs are doing worse. I don’t see that changing keeping things the same. At some point it’s out with the old, and in with the new.

  42. ChiBuc Says:

@Hodad, that is a pretty logical analysis. Oh well, who needs logic when you have TB and his faithful minions.

I personally, still see Brady as a top 10 QB… but I also thought Tannenhill would wash out by now. My only offensive dream for 2023 is that Byron is gone. I can root for lesser players, but I have a hard time rooting for stupid

  43. Rod Munch Says:

adam from ny – Yeah, it’s absolutely true.

From the Bucs website, announcing that the throwbacks are delayed until 2023…

“Due to global supply chain challenges, we will have to wait one more year than hoped. This is the earliest that Nike can finish production of the orange uniforms.”

  44. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules – Good points, but there are some solutions, using post-June 1st cap designations…

This is what you’d save, then the cap hit.

Donovan Smith – $15.2m freed up, 2.6m cap hit
    Shaquil Barrett – $15m / $6m
    Ryan Succop – $3.2m / $750k
    Leonard Fournette – $5m / $3.5m
    Shaquille Mason – $8.5m / $1m

So that’s like $43m. If you did more void year deals, you could sign guys to new deals on the cheap, and just push everything down the line again. Which I’m fine with.

As for the guys you’re cutting…

On the offensive line, I assume the idea all along was/is to move Wirfs to LT. Now you’re relying on Licht to draft a starting RT, risky, but he did it with Wrifs.

As for Mason – well, you got Jensen coming back, you could then move Hainsey to RG.

The changes on the offensive line I don’t think would be that bad. Also, because of Mason’s deal, you do have room there to money around, so he doesn’t have to be cut.

As for Shaq on defense, would hurt, but we’ll see how they finish up the season without him.

And for Fournette, well, I think most people understood White was/is his replacement, and he’s done well so far. The Bucs also might be able to lower that base salary and keep him, again, not out of the question.

On defense, with the money left you might be able to do more void year deals with guys and end up keeping them – its just borrowing from the future, which I have no problem with.

Also the Bucs would need an excellent draft with guys who can play right away.

So it IS possible, but would be difficult.

  45. Mike C Says:

Clean house, it looked like the sky was falling at 3-5 at 5-5 with effectively a two game lead things (math is part of this equation) definitely look up.

  46. John Says:

Considering his track record with knowing Brady’s future plans… This isn’t good

  47. ChiBuc Says:

No worries folks, Rod is gonna Cliff Clavin the bucs to a bright future with a stagnant cast. Shoot, we might even get Ian Beckles back on the OL. 🙃

  48. Goatfarmer Says:

OhSqueelYall of course is against Brady staying on. She’d rather get back to 3-14 seasons so she can complain about all the QB development failures.

Meanwhile, JaMiss is tearing up the NFL as a Saints starter. From the bench. Beat out by Andy Dalton.

The girl should really just stop watching the NFL and take up women’s softball. Suits her better.

  49. Oneilbuc Says:

Gayfarmer. I know you are happy about Brady’s divorce because you think he’s going to call you but give It up Ru Paul Brady ain’t coming back. And I know once he’s gone you will be also .

  50. Rod Munch Says:

ChiBuc – anyone eager to move on from the current cast is clearly a bandwagon rider who doesn’t know Bucs history. The moment Brady is gone, the team is done being anything other than a loser for at least 10-15 years. Learn your history, kiddo.

  51. Oneilbuc Says:

And if any one thinks that one player is the reason why we won don’t know or understand team sports. It’s time to move on or get left behind Brady is 45 years old and he plays like it now. He can’t throw down field as much and teams knows it. We won because of our running game and defense I know some of yall hate to admit that but it’s the truth. This team is set up perfectly for a young quarterback while wait until a total rebuild we tried that before that’s been the problem for years.

  52. ChiBuc Says:

Lol. @Rod, I appreciate you calling me kiddo. It truly does emphasize how sometimes ppl will act as though the know something/someone when they are truly ignorant of the topic. Your reply had 3 swings and 3 misses. Having been born and raised in Tampa and have not missed a game from day 1 (except when my wife went into labor with our 1st child), I
    1) have well out lived the designation of kiddo
    2) am well aware of the teams history, and
    3) can hardly be considered a bandwagon fan

As far as I can tell, the only distinctions between our Fandom are…
1)I’m NOT a know it all like you,
2)I’m NOT a Brady fan boy (win or lose, I’m always all in)
    3) I’m NOT a pessimist who sees it as though the sky is falling when Brady retires
    4) I DO believe that in order to continue to improve and remain germane in football/life you must evolve to meet needs/demands. If you continue riding the same pony and stagnant philosophy you look a lot like Lefty and Bowles

  53. Oneilbuc Says:

Chibuc. I love your take bro and I agree 💯 percent on some of these people believe wants Brady is gone we don’t have a chance and the sky will fall when he retires. Great point!!!

  54. Alanbucsfan Says:

Didn’t the Bucs make the playoffs three times with the creamsicles?
I was at that 38-0 curb-stomping by the Cowboys in ‘82 at the now demolished Texas Stadium – same year the Cowboys lost to 49ers in “The Catch” game.
