Screaming Kids, A Walk-Through Wednesday And A Hotel Under Construction

October 3rd, 2022

“Clyde, the practice squad guys’ kids were playing red-light/green light in the hallway at 6 a.m. They’re lucky Antonio Brown quit the team.”

Joe wouldn’t have touched this if not for Tristan Wirfs and Cameron Brate both noting the same thing: one before yesterday’s loss to the Chiefs and one after.

Yeah, the Bucs had a messed up week of preparation. The team evacuated to a Miami report on Tuesday and Team Glazer invited families and pets to join the players.

On the Buccaneers Radio Network pregame show, Cameron Brate noted how life wasn’t too smooth on the impromptu road trip. He cited players’ kids running all around the team hotel. Tristan Wirfs mentioned the same thing in the locker room after last night’s loss.

Both implied it was a negative rather than an endearing spectacle.

Were the kids preventing players from getting proper sleep?

TampaBay.com posted a feature exploring the Bucs’ wacky evacuation week after talking to team operations chief Tim Jarocki. He painted a chaotic picture.

“The defensive meeting room started leaking and we had a waterfall,” Jarocki said. “The hotel was under construction. Throughout the week we’re dealing with them renovating sleeping rooms, people’s babies trying to sleep with jackhammering going on and obviously the one meeting room with water everywhere. Luckily it didn’t start coming down in the meal room.”

Brate also mentioned that after traveling to Miami on Tuesday — some flew, some drove — the Buccaneers’ Wednesday practice was just a walk-through because a chunk of players weren’t feeling up to par after the travel. Wednesday is normally the team’s day to be in pads and to have a full-throttle practice.

Joe is not making excuses for the Bucs coming out flat and losing to Kansas City last night, but it is worth nothing that their week of preparation might have been a lot messier than it appeared.

Great job contingency planning…and what a well oiled machine! I’m
Sure the conditions turned Vita into a serial loafer, JTS into an oft-fooled one-trick pony, SMB into the doghouse (someone help me understand why he didn’t come into play nickel after Ryan got hurt?), Julio into glass, Byron into Marcus Arroyo, and Todd’s D into Lovie Smith’s.

  2. SB~LV Says:

    Excuses for losers
If they won they would be saying what a wonderful bonding atmosphere it was in Miami

  3. JoeB Says:

Everyone is making too big of a deal out of this one loss. If memory serves me correct, the Bucs lost to the Chiefs in the regular season the same year we won it all. We had a tough schedule to start the season and ended 2-2. We should still easily win our division and weve got some easier opponents coming up. We will be fine! It was nice to see signs of life from the offense last night. There is a lot mroe football to be played.

  4. Hodad Says:

What gunny sarge said in Heart Break Ridge,” What we have here is a cluster f#ck”! Didn’t think going to Miami was a good idea. Should’ve just kept the circus in town, then played the game in Minn.

  5. LVMYBUCS Says:

WOW!!!!!!! Dont they have people to control all that? Hey how about putting the players on one level of the hotel and the families on another. Or one hotel for families and one hotel for player, problem solved. But just like the game coaches have no clue.

  6. SB~LV Says:

    JoeB
It is not this “one loss”
    3 ugly games

  7. Jack Sparrow Says:

Excuses Excuses !! come on, just man up and admit that our defense is just overrated. The so-called best defense allowed 44pts … smh…

  8. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Bucs did not just lose-They got blown out , pole axed , taken to the woodshed by their Daddy , whatever saying you want to use , but they were whipped. Bucs have major personnel problems and if Jason Licht is unwilling to sign Ndamakong Suh to help rectify the utter impotence of our Dline , maybe Licht needs to look for another GM job.The guy the Bucs picked 1st in the draft Logan Hall had 0 Tacles and O Sacks-Hall has 1 tackle and 1 Sack for the entire season. Hicks, Gage, and Julio were major reaches that have not worked. Using a 4th rounder on a FREAKING PUNTER that cannot kick off into a 50 yard wide area-please.

  9. Lt. Dan Says:

@JoeB: spot on. I recall a lot of chatter before the sesaon began, that coming out of this four game stretch that being 2-2 would be considered a win. So here we are. On to the Falcons.

  10. Roc Says:

WOW our we REALLY GOING TO WRITE THIS!!!

Million Dollar Players can’t get sleep in their Comfortable Hotel WHEN THERE ARE Thousands of Linemen, Cops, Nurses living without power and living in campers who PUT IN WORK DAY IN DAY OUT BECAUSE OF THIS STORM

    SORRY EXCUSE

  11. LVMYBUCS Says:

    @JoeB

ITS NOT THE LOSS OR THE WIN ITS THE WAY YOU LOSE AND WIN! Bowles is not the man for the job we knew Leftwitch sucked but Aries was there to keep him strait, but Bowles has no fire, desire or knowlege on how to win games, hence the reason he was fired in NY.

  12. LVMYBUCS Says:

    Hey Bowles repeat after me
“no risk it. no biscuit” “no risk it. no biscuit” “no risk it. no biscuit”

  13. VATom Says:

Bucs come out fornthese games and you can tell in the 1st 5 minutes they won’t be imposing their will on the other team. Vea not getting a consistent push, Devin White flying past tackles, guys freelancing, everyone grabbing a hammie…🤦‍♂️

  14. Steven007 Says:

There are excuses, and then there are reasons. They are not exactly the same. Lots of things went against us last night, first and foremost the storm. It would have been a nice story if we could have executed better and pulled it together and been competitive or even won. But we didn’t. And there are reasons for that. And I’m sure one of those reasons, however small, was the haphazard prep week. Coupled with the concerns about the situation. And I don’t know about you, but at this point it seems clear we could have done without Shaq running his mouth about how KC has the same porous o-line they did when we beat them in the super bowl. A team like the Chiefs don’t need bulletin board material. Almost every team has at least one aberration game. I’m hoping this one was it. We will know more in 6 days.

  15. Jack Sparrow Says:

Julio JOnes, RUssel Gage, Kyle Rudolph, Hakim Hicks, Shaq Mason all waste of money. We could have gotten a durable WR, a TE, a DLine with all the money we put on those bums.

  16. Ash Says:

Its overreaction Monday right? It will be fine bucs will get it together people don’t want to hear “excuses” because all they care about is winning but alot going before this game. I have confidence that they will figure it out. More reps with the starters in the offense and it will be crazy good the defense needs to look in the mirror and not drink the Kool aid and realize they have to perform every game do not give up on plays with mahomes out on the field that guy is crazy talented. Go bucs.

  17. alton green Says:

Sounds like we all have a very short memory. Most of us said that we would accept 2-2. OK we are 2-2 and all you experts are ready to jump out a window. If we lose more than 1 more game, there will be 1 reason. He stands on the sideline with a sh*# eating smile on his face. A coach that plays “to not lose” For those that blame Tommy Boy for the 1st 3 games of no production, let’s look at last nights stats. Here’s Tom’s. 385 yds at 75% completion 3 TDs and no INTs. To put this into perspective with those stats, we should be 16-1 but we got our arse kicked last night. I was really pissed at Bruce when he threw Tom under the bus at the beginning but Lord PLEASE give Todd a compass with 1 needle!!!!

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m quite sure the disruptions didn’t help…..but the turnovers giving KC 14 easy points meant more.

And yes, we are 2-2……not bad position after our rugged first 4 schedule….but now, we need to show what we are made of.

We need to take care of business vs Atlanta.

I wish all players could show the fire of Brady & Evans….

  19. Craig Says:

It would not have been so bad if they had remembered to put the defense on the bus home.

  20. Jerid421 Says:

    WHOlio Jones?

  21. Bucamania Says:

Wednesday practice was just a walk-through because a chunk of players weren’t feeling up to par after the travel. What? We’ve all driven to Miami. Gimme a break.

  22. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

“the Buccaneers’ Wednesday practice was just a walk-through because a chunk of players weren’t feeling up to par after the travel.” …. WHAT!?! … M’Fr you get paid MILLIONS of dollars, more than most of us will make in our lifetimes, and you “didn’t feel like practicing” … Man bring B.A. back right now!!

  23. Bucamania Says:

Not up to par?! So soft. Got what they deserved.

  24. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Bucmania … Yeah that reeeeally got to be right there!! I work HARD for a living and I have to do it everyday no matter how I feel or we will be homeless!! I don’t have the luxury of “not feeling up to par” … These NFL players have become too soft, too rich, and FAR too political with those STUPID slogans on the back of their helmets!! And once Brady is done playing I will probably stop watching the NFL mainly because of the political bull they are constantly pushing!!

  25. Bucamania Says:

I’ve driven to Miami and back on the same day for business meetings MANY times. Gone to office after redeye flights from California. Suck it up buttercups.

  26. SB~LV Says:

    South Beach flu ?

  27. Earl Brady Says:

Joe your just jealous your a hater you don’t like Brady like Biden don’t like Trump lol grow up

  28. Smashsquatch Says:

Brady said no excuses earlier in the week. The Bucs were flat, from the opening kickoff and throughout. Last week felt like a month to me, and much worse for others. Excuses or not, I’m chalking this one up to Ian. It’s a mulligan. Expecting the next tee-shot to be center cut. The Bucs will have their best game of the year Sunday. Offense, defense, and special teams will all shine.

  29. firethecannons Says:

I think we would of lost to Chiefs anyway Rashad White fumble on first play of the game spotted them 7 points He should not be in the trust tree play him when we are winning late in 4th quarter this year only nothing more

  30. unbelievable Says:

I’m sorry, is this a professional football team or a church youth group?

The lack of preparation for traveling is simply inexcusable. Further proof that this organization is still JV league, even with Brady.

  31. LakelandSteve Says:

All of that could have had an affect on their play but these guys are supposed to be professionals. Mike Evans showed up, Tom Brady showed up and played like pros but apparently the majority of the team doesn’t have heart!

  32. David Says:

Kind of like 2020, I am hoping that beat down fires up the team, especially the defense. They have a chance to be a great defense but they can’t rest on their laurels. They showed signs of life on offense and started stretching the field.

So I’m going to be optimistic and say this helps to galvanize them and get both sides rolling again

  33. RightOnMan Says:

Joe loves a loser. That’s why he loves demented Biden.

  34. Mike C Says:

Chiefs also played a hell of a game, that qb is pretty ok…..

  35. Defense Rules Says:

Steven007 … ‘There are excuses, and then there are reasons. They are not exactly the same.’

Agree 100%, and sometimes it’s hard to tell which is which. It’s nice for commenters sitting comfortably behind their computer to say ‘Bucs should’ve been better prepared’, but reality is that hurricanes don’t exactly follow a game plan. I’ll bet that the Bucs ‘took what they could get’ in Miami because tens of thousands of Floridians probably descended on Miami that week.

Kudos to the Bucs for evacuating the players’ families & pets along with the players. At the time they evacuated, the storm was still heading for … Tampa. Had the families been left behind, players would’ve been out of their minds with worry. IOW, the Bucs did the right thing, Hurricane Ian just happened to throw a monkey wrench in their planning.

It obviously sucked, but it is what it is. Certainly less than ideal game preparation, but that’s not why we lost. Chiefs’ OLine is more talented than Bucs’ DLine. And oh ya, Chiefs played a better game on both sides of the ball.

  36. ScottyMack Says:

Defense Rules is spot-on with his statement, “I’ll bet that the Bucs ‘took what they could get’ in Miami because tens of thousands of Floridians probably descended on Miami that week.”

I looked at getting a room in the Miami/Hollywood area at the same time the Bucs has made their decision to go there because it seemed to be the safest spot in all of Florida. Rooms were not abundant, so I can only imagine how hard it was finding rooms for an entire NFL team, their families and the staff (let alone the dogs and cats).

Also, I’m sure their minds were not 100% on football, thinking about the potential devastation going on just a couple hundred miles away and what their friends might be going through. Miami, though not rocked in a major way, still experienced high winds and a lot of rain. I’m sure a decent percentage of the entourage had never experienced anything even close to the relatively “mild” tropical storm effects in Miami.

Still, no excuses. It is what it is. The Bucs have exactly the record I thought they would have after the first four games and I never thought they were going to beat KC even before the season began. Hopefully, the experience was humbling and will make them stronger.

  37. captivajim Says:

Very surprised that the glazers couldn’t find a better hotel…But I don’t think that had anything to do with White’s fumble, defense repeated failures,..Maybe what did was ; Shaq saying during the wk that ” Chiefs new O line wasn’t any different than the one we dominated in the Super Bowl”—- that was bulletin board material in the Chiefs locker room !!! excellent way to motivate your opponent . most people see doing that as STUPID
