Jason Licht Talks About Julio Jones’ “New Injury”

October 28th, 2022

Bucs GM Jason Licht

The only significant upside in the Bucs’ punchless loss to the Ravens last night was the return of Julio Jones, and Bucs general manager Jason Licht talked about it.

Julio was a game-time decision. He warmed up his wounded knee with teammates and was added to the active list for a third game this season.

It’s obvious to Joe that Julio gets defenses attention. Joe could see it on the Bucs’ first two drives against the Ravens, even without balls coming Julio’s way.

So what’s actually wrong with Julio’s knee? And do the Bucs expect him to be rolling the rest of the season?

Licht was on the Buccaneers Radio Network prior to kickoff and explained that Julio’s undisclosed knee issue is “a new injury he’s never had before.”

Licht called it “a tricky injury” because it affects Julio’s ability to start running, as well as “decelerating.” Licht characterized Julio as closer to 100 percent but not there yet.

Tampa Bay called Julio’s number on a run play against Baltimore and he came up slowly after no gain on the play. But Julio later returned to the game and finished with two catches and plenty of action in the fourth quarter.

Yes, it was encouraging. Joe is still thinking Super Bowl for the Bucs. Why? Because they can still win the division. And any division winner, no matter how ugly their play, has a shot to make a run to February.

Joe remembers when the Seahawks won the NFC West with a 7-9 record in 2010. They beat a mighty 11-5 Saints team in the playoffs before getting trounced by Lovie Smith’s Bears in the next round.

The 2014 Panthers also won the NFC South with a 7-8-1 record and beat Bucco Bruce Arians’ Cardinals (11-5) in the wild card round of the playoffs.

If anybody wants some waffle house, Im buying….scattered smothered covered chunked, Thats our D. Prove me wrong! I saw so much giving up!!!

  2. Tbbucs3 Says:

Julio Jones, Russell Gage, Kyle Rudolph….the 3 headed monster!

Jason Licht really whiffed badly this off season….

  3. MadMax Says:

Glazers, please hire me….lets get over this. The Joes have my name.

  4. Bucanero Says:

Whatever happens I’m watching every single play. Good to see Julio getting some playtime

  5. Tbbucs3 Says:

I will say though…it is interesting to see many NFL and Bucs fans continue this “blame everybody but Tom Brady tour”…..if the Ravems DBs could catch Brady would’ve thrown 3 picks tonight

  6. MadMax Says:

^@Tb, yep! Adios, out of here…i love you man but time to go.

  7. Bucsfan13 Says:

This is Licht’s fault! I like Licht, but allowing this team to go into the season with three new interior OL was malpractice! Goedeke our starting LG is a former TE turned RT, and we just throw him out to the wolves! Hainsey is also a former RT and is taking his first snaps at center in an NFL game! The OL was awful all training camp and preseason, and yet Jason did nothing! This team has a historically bad running game and can’t protect Brady.

Licht’s don’t a lot of good, namely singing Brady, but he blew it big time not bringing in some veteran OL.

  8. Bucsfan13 Says:

So if the QB isn’t perfect on every pass, this team has no chance?! That’s scary. You don’t see that as a symptom of a greater issue? The Eagles don’t need Hurts to be perfect. The Bills don’t need Josh Allen to be perfect. The Chiefs don’t need Mahomes to be perfect. Some fans expect a 45 year QB carry this team by himself.

Reports are that Brady sat at his locker in a catatonic state after the game. He’s probably wondering how he can get the stench of this franchise off him. Brady’s been pretty docile and a company man so far, but if the reports are true, he might make a call to the Glazers.

I just don’t see Leftwich leaving. Brady really likes him as a man. He would feel awful if they let him go.

  9. MadMax Says:

I guess Mr. Licht has mailed it in too….all good. I need to slow down on this. Tank season, here we go. Thats the only explanation I can figure why management is allowing this….sorry Joes Im frustrated and pissed

  10. Bucsfan13 Says:

What about Jensen’s injury? Why is everything so vague with this team? We’ve yet to get an official diagnosis about Jensen’s injury. Jensen should just sit the rest of this season. He’s not gonna make much a difference in December

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

Please Mr Licht, Cut it out and knock it off. Julio,Randolph, Ggage, Perryman, Hcks….Where you find these old Wounded warriors? I mean they like Sweezy use to be. Gettin their money for nothin and their chicks for free…LOL

  12. Adrnagy Says:

    We will win division.

  13. MadMax Says:

^and one and done after that….

    Im over it

  14. steele Says:

Why are they talking about something so unimportant, while the entire rest of the team is in decline and collapse? Far bigger issues than Julio Jones and his knee.

  15. captivajim Says:

licht made some really bad moves with FA’s this yr . also let go johnson -but kept darden..chose not to replace 2 O-line probowl level players with proven guys last spring ……

  16. Oneilbuc Says:

I told y’all that Brady has to much power on this team he was the one who picked these free agents remember what Brady wants Brady gets!!!

  17. Bucsfan13 Says:

@Oneil. Does Brady live rent free in your head? Is this Shannon Sharpe’s burner account?

Julio Jones, Russell Gage, Kyle Rudolph….the 3 headed monster!

Jason Licht really whiffed badly this off season….

Not just this off season. He has 2 quality payers in three drafts, Whirfs and Winfield. That’s it. Time for us to unload what we can. The rebuild has started. No OL, no team. Again, why would you pu that OL in front of TB12? 45 year old qb must have a running game.

  19. Hodad Says:

So why are you handing the ball off to Julio on an end around when he has a bad knee, and most likely will be chopped down low running with it? I know, Leftwich is dumb as a box of rocks. Also Lefty why throw that quick outside pass to Evans? It never works, because he’s not a quick twitch receiver like Ty Hill who can accelrate quickly. It sickens me to watch. Fire sale before the trade deadline. Total house cleaning after the season starting from the top with Licht. If Tom didn’t save us for at least the last two years, Licht would’ve been gone by now.

  20. JimmyfromNY Says:

Blaming Brady shortsighted. Has he misses throws absolutely he’s playing with a bad rotator cuff and still putting the ball in tight spaces he’s the least of your issues Mike Evans has checked out for the season Only cares about getting 1000 yards, goes down with every catch right Outabounds the drop last night was embarrassing hit him in the face mask with his eyes closed, Godwin it still injured the worst offensive coordinator in football the worst offensive line in football

  21. Knucknbuc Says:

    Julio coughs and gets injured

  22. BUCkleup Says:

Licht in the pants like our entire team

  23. BUCkleup Says:

Lost 5 of 6. To loser squads.

    NFL laughing stock.

  24. beano Says:

“Joe is still thinking Super Bowl for the Bucs.”

    ?##ywh#)(#*#&@^?

  25. PSL Bob Says:

There’s that optimism creeping into the sunlight. Give it up Joe. This team is not playoff bound, at least not the way it’s currently playing. And even if they should win this crappy division, they will be annihilated in the first round of the playoffs when they have to face a good team.

  26. JVZ Says:

The Buccaneers coaching staff might be outstanding in Orange County Youth football in California where the age group is 8 to 12 with a weight limit.

We followed Tom Brady to Tampa Bay as avid Brady fans since collage. Unless the Buccaneers can figure a way to put at team around him they are doing a major injustice

Mike Evans missed catches last night because he was afraid of getting hit – that was obvious. What’s up with that. Seems he has become a pu**y on the field.

“Go home Mikey or find your balls!”

Any team, even in collage could beat the secondary Bowles put on the field last night. He had no choice…

Send the Buccaneers defense back to “tackling school”! Last night was really sick from that point of view. They should be ashamed…..

    It is what it is..

  27. Panhandle Buc Says:

That end around call to Julio was idiotic!!!! He’s old and slow! Why wouldn’t you use Scotty or Perriman?!? I’m telling you, our OC is trash!!!

  28. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucfan51 . I know the truth hurts and you want to ignore how Brady been playing and you don’t want to hold him accountable but call like it is. If this any other quarterback Jamies, Kyle Trask, Freeman, Dilfer they would be the only reason why we lost. Now yall want to talk around the quarterback play . The Ravens was at 58 plays in the second quarter that’s a lot of plays for a defense. That’s how the Patriots came back on the Falcons in the super bowl that year. The Falcons defense was on the field for 94 plays and they were gasp just like our defense was last night to many 3 and outs!!!

  29. JVZ Says:

With the last ultimatum fromm his wife coupled to the way his supporting cast is playing, there could be no blame it TB walked away. How much does he need to take before giving in and becoming a family man

However, for her to do this at this time to him seems to be a payback of sorts designed to make it worse on him.

In a situation like this, “a woman scorned is a woman that should be left alone” to play with old surfers!!!!

But then TB pulled his knife and shot first..

    Karma is a nasty device!

We all create our own lessons in life.

  30. BucU Says:

    Blow it up. Fire everybody.

  31. Brandon Says:

Yall can blame Licht for signing Jones. I blame the stupid fans. Almost all of you were begging we sign him… as well as Beasley, Rudolph, Gio Bernard, Shady McCoy, Antonio Brown, Richard Sherman, you guys don’t know anything about football and anytime an over the hill injury prone former superstar becomes available, you guys are all for it. Fan reaction means something when it comes to signings and we have the dumbest fan base south of DC.

  32. rrsrq Says:

After the Kadarius Toney trade to the Chiefs, I realize the Bucs organization, if it does not get lucky (no state taxes), then they don’t know how to build. KT on the trade block, this team has no speed, if they do, between Perriman and Miller, they do not use them, a KT pick up not only gives you a player for this year, but also a player for your future QB “Trask”.

  33. Jack Sparrow Says:

Bucs is like John Knox facility, home for the elderly.

  34. Your Mom Says:

Krusty is coming, Krusty is coming… 🙁

  35. David G Says:

Time to cut bait and get someone who can at least run! What the hell are we dong with Perriman and Scotty Miller. Bring back Cyril Grayson for god sake at least he played more then one game.

  36. David G Says:

Get someone who can at least run! What the hell are we dong with Perriman and Scotty Miller. Bring back Cyril Grayson for god sake at least he played more then one game.

  37. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    Super Bowl my Butt!
We play the Rams and Seahawks next, and we are not about to beat either team.
I see no way we win the division this year.
Stick a Fork in us, we are Done!
Not only are we being outcoached, but our players are not even very physically fit !
Time to completely start over, from the Top down.

  38. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Does Brady deserve blame for the poor showing? Yes for some but the 80% issue is Brady has no O line to hold back the rush or make the defense respect the run so he has less time and therefore less trust to hold on the ball to make a throw. Yes he can get better but no QB is good with a bad Oline. Look at Mahomes in the SB. If the line gets fixed and we can run then Brady will make better throws with more time. Even if Gronk came back it’s still starts and stops with the O line. If and it’s a big IF Oline is fixed then we can throw and run better. Stay on the field longer to give defense a rest. I feel Defense has done the job it’s been asked. Keep it to 21 or less points and offense scores 31+. The highest score against us was chiefs and of the 41 pts given up one TD was white fumbling and the other was Brady fumbling. Take those away and the score is 31-27 with Bucs win. Oline is the key and Leftwich either adapts (not likely) or he gets replaced (not likely).

  39. The Daily Coroner Says:

He was available for a reason. Old and injury prone. Pipe dream – as was a possible run deep into the playoffs.

  40. CGB Spender Says:

Julio is done. Should I’ve been cut for weeks now

  41. Crickett Baker Says:

At least Mad Max made me laugh with his potato comparison on the defense. That was SO TRUE! LOL At least I saw a few good plays. They used Miller more and I think I even saw him as a gunner once. The plays seemed a bit better but many players did not. As in last week, the penalties by White were almost criminal.

  42. Buccos Says:

I like the positivity Joe. These Bucs aren’t done yet. There is still a lot of football left to play. Hopefully Tommy can put horse face in the rear view mirror and get back to what he loves, winning Super Bowls.

  43. Buffalo54 Says:

I am surprised that the Glazers haven’t stepped in yet.where are they,? Can’ t believe their letting this happen, couching, where is it? Not on the Bucks field ,that’s for sure, they just aren’t connecting, or blocking,Julio ,needs to be more on field, earn that money!

  44. Ranger Walker Says:

Man I am so sick of all the Patriot fans telling us what we’re doing wrong or right for Brady. How we’re ruining his legacy, his career and wasting his last year blah blah… Did y’all forget about that last season in NE and all that s$#t you guys did to him, why he ended up choosing us in the first place?! Screw the Pats & Go home
