Is Left Guard Spot Now Open?

October 23rd, 2022

Bucs OL Nick Leverett.

Fans have been hollering for it. And it finally happened for them. But will it continue?

The Bucs benched rookie left guard Luke Goedeke today but he did return to start the second half. Briefly after he was replaced by Nick Leverett, the Bucs rushing attack improved, at least with Rachaad White running up the middle.

After the game, Bucs coach Todd Bowles was asked what was going on that he pulled Goedeke and then later put him back on the field.

“Leverett earned some playing time,” Bowles said. “We wanted to change the pace a little bit. We wanted to give Luke a bit of a break. They were tight [in competition for left guard] in training camp. So we wanted to get the guy some reps.”

So could we see Leverett starting Thursday night against the Crows instead of Goedeke? Bowles didn’t rule it out.

“We will have to watch the tape to determine that,” Bowles said.

The Bucs did seem to run the ball inside better with Leverett and it appeared the offensive coordinator was too dense to notice.

much more needed than this move…

i did see them swap leverett for goedeke midway thru the first half…

but then poof…back came the rook

  2. Jack Sparrow Says:

Even if you put in the most talented player but the playcalling sucks, it will not matter. FIRE Bowles and Leftwich!

  3. Rod Munch Says:

In my view, Joe, this is a bad take.

I saw the same thing you did, but the difference was, the Bucs weren’t running in predictable situations. That is the difference.

I’m not even defending Goedeke, I’m fine with playing whoever is best, but I don’t think Goedeke was the difference, it was just catching the defense in a situation where they expected passing.

To be the worst you gotta lose to the worst

  5. HC Grover Says:

It will not matter. This team is shot with this staff. They jost got clobbered by 2 teams of scrubs undergoing rebuilding with 3rd and 4 string QB’s ans u can tell me a diff guard is going to make a diff? If DRaSTIC action is not taken tonight by the Glaziers this season is a write off.

  6. Stormy Says:

Dunno about left guard, but the head coach and offensive coordinator jobs should be open….

  7. Jack Sparrow Says:

The Bucs have the best weapon both offensively and defensively but if the Commander-in-Chief is incompetent and inept, all those weapons are worthless. Pathetic!

  8. BFFL Says:

Entire team is playing poorly. That’s on HC. Probably worst staff in league. Get out coached by Wilks and McAdoo…wow pathetic.

  9. stpetebucfan Says:

AGAIN…not to keep pounding on Brady but does anybody doubt he gets whomever he wants on the OL?

  10. Byedon Leftbitch Says:

I’ll say it since no one else is apparently willing to…..

Devin White is playing like absolute trash and there is no way Bucs should give him a big contract after this season. He needs to be traded.

  11. Scott Says:

Both are really awful at this point. Pass protection especially

  12. Stephen Rohrs Says:

Bunch of fair weather spoiled fans!!! You should be ashamed of yourselves after 2 years removed from a Super Bowl. You brats probably have no idea of the suffering the real buc fans endured. Everyone of you spoiled instant gratification brats don’t even know what a play action or a strong to the right formation means . Let alone a 4 3 defense. BTW it’s the defense when 55 played a Super Bowl and 47 was had freedom to play that coverage. Go through your drive thru and get bad instant food. Just stay away from talking football. You look stupid!

  13. HC Grover Says:

Is Head Coach Job now open?

  14. Flhillbilly61 Says:

Who would have ever thought with the GOAT at QB that a Team would start thinking of tanking the season.

  15. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Been a Bucsfan since day 1. I’ve seen seen a lot of bad Bucs teams play heartless and effortless football but never a team this talented. That falls squarely on the coaches. Amazing that these guys are paid millions to play like that! GM Licht, but for BA and Brady, has been a horrible GM also.

  16. Upstate NY Buc Says:

I have tickets for the Browns game Nov 27, I’m scared to go after witnessing this nightmare!!! Might sell them, Wowwww never thunk , have to play it by ear…lol.

  17. PassingThru Says:

I had to laugh at Goedeke rolling on the ground backwards like a bowling ball. I’m surprised that Bowles, Licht, and Leftwich have been talking him up like a penny stock.

  18. LakelandSteve Says:

Can’t wait for Thursday night. The Bucs will get blown out on National television by the Ravens. NATIONAL TV. If the Bucs can’t put away the Steelers and the Panthers, no way they can handle the Ravens.

  19. dmatt Says:

Bowles is another example of Lovie Smith. He doesn’t know how to take the advantage of the talent on this team. And let’s stop using injuries for excuses. Pittsburg had four starters out on defense n played tough with a desire to hustle n win. Panthers did the same today. They straight up outplayed, out hustlers, n out performed us despite no Mccafferty, Robbie Anderson, n with a 4th stringer qb at the helm. This is just flat out embarrassing. MEvans still had the opportunity to dive n make the catch after the ball bounced off his hands floated in the air. No sense of urgency. Luke Goedeke is pure garbage n Bowles need to call it for what it is. Leftwich is nothing remotely close to being a head coach. He does not know how to draw up mismatches, especially on 3rd or 4th n short. He’s too predictable. Brady seems to throw a lot of dirt balls as of late, hint, hint. Russel Gage is a waste n bust, had he maintained his block Fournette would’ve made the first down. Why is Jaelon Darden still returning kicks or running a “joke” sweep? Please give Otton more plays, he has good hands. He has potential. DWhite is more mouth than anything. Where was SBarrett? We need a DE n JTS is not the answer. He’s outta his league. Changes on the offense, defense, n at coaching level need to be made asap.

  20. jehzsa Says:

I’d like to nominate T. Bowles for Coach of the Year.

And B. Leftwich for Sub-Coach of the Year.

    It’s a new category.

  21. Tiny Dungy Says:

    Trade for a guard, please..,

One more loss and the Bucs need to go into rebuilding mode like the Panthers

  22. SufferingSince76 Says:

Oooo, Stephen. You really told us, didn’t you? It’s suck a$$ football and we know it when we see it. Real Buc fans aren’t going to accept this just because the team has been lousy for so long, not including the last 2 years. You may like mediocre. We don’t.

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

    Clueless knee jerk reaction.
Goedeke isn’t the problem. Neither is Hainsey or Mason.
Anyone who visits this site alot- knows I preached about it all preseason.
Individually- they are all playing surprisingly well.
But an offensive line has to play as a unit. You cant replace 3 starters, and expect the line to know how to play together. I said it in July. Prophecy in October. I would rather have been wrong.

Also said that you cant replace 5 All pros with rookies, and expect to win.
Marpet, Jensen, Gronk, Bryant, and Suh.
Even Sherman helped on the practice field.
Antonio Bryant is Batsh*t crazy. Also our best reciever.
Gronk is the greatest TE of all time.
    Brady is struggling without him.

It was too much. And all the Vets Licht signed to replace them, are playing Cards on the IR bench.

Cant fix the line at this point. A Vet or 2 in camp would have fixed it.
Hicks and Jones need to retire. Its over for them
I predicted our record would be 9-8 or 8-9.
    That might have been optimistic

  24. Tony Says:

Bowles & Leftwich never should’ve changed anything with the offense from the beginning. The offense was doing just fine the last couple of years. Why are you changing & fixing something when it’s not broken? You idiots. Even Jacksonville didn’t want Leftwich after everything. So I guess they’re just satisfied with a couple of winning seasons & a couple of Super Bowls & that’s it?

  25. Tony Says:

They’re both wasting the talent of the players on the offense. Between Evans & Godwin & Fournette & especially Brady. You’re talking about one of the best players in all of sports overall & you’re wasting his talent still because who knows what’s gonna happen later on & if he does retire or if he does want to play still. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d want to retire after these last two weeks because I doubt Bowles & Leftwich are gonna change.

  26. Defense Rules Says:

Capt Tim … I’m with you on this, with the exception of 1 minor detail: the OLine isn’t playing individually ‘surprisingly well’, they’re playing like dog-doo. They’re getting outplayed man-to-man all too often, even our stalwarts like Smith, Wirfs & Mason. Donovan I’ll give a pass to; he’s no more effective playing with 1 arm than JPP was last year. The 2 rookies are playing like … rookies. I have no clue what’s going on with Mason & Wirfs, but I’ve seen even them get handled too often.

It is about playing ‘as a unit’, whether you talk about OLines or DLines. We’re not doing that on either line right now, and I still think it’s primarily because of FIELD LEADERSHIP. And without strong trenches, Tom Brady has shown himself to be very mortal & defensively we’ve shown that we can’t stop the run or effectively pressure opposing QBs. We don’t have the beasts in the trenches that we had, and we’ll pay for it this season. IMO, that’s on Licht much more than it is on the coaches.

I’ve mentioned that this season’s roster isn’t making any BIG PLAYS. Evans’ dropping that sure TD in the 1st quarter is a classic indication of that. BIG PLAY opportunity went right down the tubes. And it’s happening over & over this season. I can see us being 3-7 by the time we get back from Europe. Lord only knows what out final record will be.

  27. Tony Says:

I bet Brady is wishing he ran off the field with Antonio now.

  28. Cchead Says:

Goedecke was in a walking boot after the game. Thak God we will not see him Thursday night.

  29. Displaced Floridian Says:

Bowles is a great D coordinator and an awful headcoach, Arians should know the truth hurts.

Dunno about left guard, but the head coach and offensive coordinator jobs should be open….

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! YES PLEASE! at least BL.

  32. Bucamania Says:

Goedeke is the worst olineman starting in the NFL this year. It’s not even close.

  33. steele Says:

Thank you, Capt. Tim, for the absolutely right-on take. The team, particularly the OL, is poorly managed in every way, lacking in cohesion and direction.

I do, however, still question the individual talent levels, including Hainsey, who is being treated like a golden boy even when he is subpar and soft, and Goedeke, a rookie who needs a long time to develop and SHOULD NOT BE STARTING in the first place.

Leverett is effortful and awful, just a big clumsy dude, and putting him out there is no miracle. He will regress shortly and be attacked mercilessly. He and the other in-house JAGs are what they are, average.

I think LT, LG and C should all be in play. When on earth is Jensen coming back? (Still too much swelling to make a diagnosis?). Once he is, they need a legit LG and a LT if D. Smith remains injured. Nothing to lose anymore.

  34. Bucsfan13 Says:

@Steele. You and I were the few begging for veteran OL. help in training camp. Licht and company wanted to give their guys a chance. I’m placing this at the feet of Licht. Should’ve brought in some veteran competition. Hainsey the golden boy was handed the job, and Goedeke has no business on the field. It’s too late now to pick someone up. The continuity is screwed up.

  35. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

“So could we see Leverett starting Thursday night against the Crows instead of Goedeke?”
    .
    .

We should have seen him start the 2nd half over Goedeke. At least the run blocking perked up when he was in there.

  36. ClwJB Says:

Simplewich notices nothing and adjusts to even less

The red pen has been covering for his ass for years now….

EXPOSED – and Todd Bowles is a PUNK!

His team completely quit on him against 2 downtrodden, beaten down, bottle dwellers- so what does that make him and us?

    Exactly
