Tom Brady Vs. The Slimy Saints Pass Rush

September 14th, 2022

Cracking the code.

If Tom Brady is Superman, then the Slimy Saints’ defense is his kryptonite.

Specifically the pass rush. (At least in the regular season).

The Bucs are 0-4 in regular season games with Brady against the slimy Saints — both on the scoreboard and against the spread.

Rich Hribar of Sharp Football Analysis has some numbers.

A huge part of those outcomes is that the Saints have been able to generate a lot of pressure on the Bucs. Under pressure in those games, Brady has connected on just 18-of-42 passes (42.9%) for 158 yards (3.8 Y/A) with zero touchdowns and three interceptions. When kept clean, Brady hit on 81-of-120 passes (67.5%) for 879 yards (7.3 Y/A) with six touchdowns and five interceptions.

The Bucs lost another potential starter up front on Sunday, with Donovan Smith exiting the game with a hyperextended elbow. The Tampa line held up for the most part in Week 1, but when they did allow pressure, the cracks in this passing came through.

Simply put, when the Cowboys pressured Brady on Sunday, his numbers were dismal. But here is an interesting thing to ponder from Hribar: Last week playing the godawful Dixie Chicks (who have nobody in the trenches), the Saints couldn’t get any pressure on brittle runaround quarterback Marcus Mariota.

The slimy Saints, per Hribar, had the worst pressure rate on opposing quarterbacks of all teams in Week 1.

This N.O. streak ends Sunday. PERIOD.

  2. Redeemer Says:

I put zero stock in the Saints week one performance. Road division games are usually wacky. I’m sure the Saints will be a little more motivated against their only real rival in the division. If I’m Bowles, I stick to the Dallas gameplan. If I’m Dennis Allen, I would try like hell to stick to the gameplan from last year.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t think it’s as much the pass rush as it is the coverage…..our receivers don’t get open against the Saints…..ask Mike Evans…..

Time to dump it off to backs…..TEs & run the ball more….

Vs Dallas we had a total of 4 passes to backs & TEs…..2 to RBs…..2 to TEs…

  4. Dano Says:

Saints DLine has dominated Bucs OLine the past 2 yrs . Now with this patchwork OLine Brady better be careful. I hope I’m wrong & Bucs come out victorious.

  5. Ugotrobbed Says:

The Saint’s were keying on the QBs running ability not his arm. That’s why pressure wasn’t there.
The Bucs players need to step up and show some grit and heart, and stop allowing those guys to slap them around!
    Lets go Bucs!!

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

The Saints are always up for this game. I think that if we remain a balanced offense, effectively running the football, we have a better chance of winning. If Brady is throwing all game, that could mean trouble.

Lenny, please de-cleat Cam Jordan a la Micah!!! I’d like to see him cry!

  7. Cobraboy Says:

This is the week when the Saints get punched in the mouth. I suspect the entire team is sick, tired, and pi$$ed at how the world says they are the Saints b!t<#.

  8. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

We have to go back to the strategy that worked with Fitzmagic. Throw deep early and often.

  9. Joseph C Simmons Says:

So what were the numbers for Brady when he was pressured against the Cowboys?

  10. Buc4evr Says:

Taysom Hill and their 3 pronged running attack needs to be stopped first. I think our Dline and LB’s can get to Winston. As far as the offense, pound the rock and play a lot of screens and bubble passes. If we are successful, then go deep on play action. I think our O line can get better this week and hope Smith is back. Big concern is the play calling in the red zone. Our WRs did not look like they were able to get open and I have no faith in our TEs.

  11. gbobucsfan Says:

Bucsfanman, I agree so much with the Cam Jordan comment!!! that dude deserves some humble pie.

  12. adam from ny Says:

i think the bucs are just going to try and get out of there healthy after what happened last season…

tom knows they will try to abuse the left side of the line with stunts and crap, with intent to injure him and kill off the bucs season early, and secure the saints a divisional title…

    that’s the real issue…

they went after tommy b’s weapons last year, and this time they will go after tommy b himself…thru hainsey, goeteke and wells or smith

  13. #8 Says:

Lenny will keep Tom upright. Welcome home Lenny.
    Suh.

  14. adam from ny Says:

the goal is to get thru the line via hainsey and goeteke and bull rush tommy to the ground and take penalties if necessary while landing on him with all their weight – thus hopefully ending the bucs season in week 2

    #SaintsGamePlan

  15. adam from ny Says:

    sheesh…

i would even throw lenny back there with ko in 2 back sets to protect tom and let tom throw the ball like it was 1985…

    #MaxProtect

  16. SCBucsFan Says:

I expect them to play harder against us. They have allot of confidence against us and it’s easy to understand why. They just seem to have our number. Being physical and smashing then in the mouth early on is what needs to be done. Run behind this new line that’s there strength and it’s what we have to do to beat them. I would love to see more of Lenny running behind ko or behind the rookie guard. Let him build his confidence up early pushing then around so he has it when he needs to keep Brady safe in pass pro. He has some work to do there but overall I was impressed with his play. Run blocking he’s great, in pass he’s acceptable at the moment but I think he will get better as the season goes on. Let’s get this W this weekend… Go BUCS!!!

  17. adam from ny Says:

let’s just get out of there healthy with a grinder 23-17 win

  18. George Says:

Hopefully Donovan Smith can play without him we are looking at very little offensive production given . Saints have the ability to exploit the weaknesses in our offensive line. If we can somehow eke out a win it would be a miracle

  19. Craig Says:

The Saints D-line is getting a little long in the tooth, they didn’t do much against the Falcons.

Our D will keep up their batting average and keep the Saints QB guessing and stressing.

That will allow the Bucs offense to continue their narrative of being a running team. Look for a similar score as the Dallas game.

  20. A Bucs Fan Says:

As hard as it is to type I want D.Smith to sit this game. Although I believe he will not practice all week and test his arm in pregame like he did a couple years ago with a high ankle sprain.

He’s tough as nails but I don’t see him being able to pull grab or punch with that arm effectively with just a week of rest.

Let Wells get the start and run the ball down their throat all game.

  21. Mario Says:

Speaking of the Slimy Saints, what is the protocol on wearing Bucs gear in NOLA. Good idea or bad idea?

  22. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

in years past we have abandoned the run when facing the saints while getting down early in games.

stick to the run and sprinkle in some dimes and we should be fine.

  23. Goatfarmer Says:

A one armed Donovan Smith is better than a three armed three legged Josh Wells.

  24. stpetebucsfan Says:

To those watching the Russian/Ukrainian war you saw the Ukrainians make the Russian military leaders look like total dumbasses! They leaked all kinds of info about their desire to attack in the South. The Russians reposition their troops and the Ukrainians kicked the Russians butts in the North.

EVERYBODY knows what the Saints feel the need to do…stop Tom Brady from Beating them. They will be pass rushing perhaps blitzing with their ears pinned back! The Bucs KNOW what the Saints defensive game plan is up front.

I think TBBF outlined a successful formula…smash mouth football…old Patriot style dinks and dunks to TE’s and RB’s…we have some great backs now as receivers including the stud himself Playoff Lennie…Bernard and our new rookie White. Along with Otton and Brate there’s five targets NOT named ME13/JJ6/CG14 or Gage.

I also hope Cobra is correct and that the Bucs are sick of being the Saints beotches.

If the Bucs play with the same PHYSICALITY and discipline..no stupid penalties or turnovers other than Brady’s one stupid int…they will win.

  25. firethecannons Says:

all the tight ends in to help with blocking and the ground and pound run game

  26. Buczilla Says:

The Saints also have a Jameis. Unless he has one of his three amazing games per year against on Sunday, we are going to stomp these fools.

Ultra Jameis: saints 35 Bucs 10

Any other Jameis (buffoon, average, etc) Bucs 23 saints 3

  27. PSL Bob Says:

I think the difference maker this time around will be our running game. If we can get Lenny going this week the way he was on Sunday night, passing opportunities will be there. This game is going to look a lot different that our previous outings against the Saints.

  28. Hodad Says:

I think the Saints should worry more about our pass rush. Dak was under lots of pressure, if we put the heat on Jameis he’ll fold.

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

The Saints saw their film against Atlanta and our film against the Cows. Saints will game plan to,stop the run first.

Byron and Tommy need to spend a little time in the lab cooking up some answers.

  30. BigMacAttack Says:

The past is the past. Dredge it up if you want, but I’m sick of hearing about the cheating, cheap shot taking, holding on top of more holding to the point refs don’t call it, crappy ass no class fans having Saints. What I meant to say, is they suck and I hate everything about them. They are the trailer trash of the NFL. FFS Cam Jordash wears make up and eye liner. I hope Lenny lays him out. New year, new team, new season and no new orleans with no caps.

  31. BigMacAttack Says:

And Sean Hatin Peyton can suck it too. King of the Cheaters.

  32. Oddball Says:

    Mario,

Who Dat’s for the most part are harmless, albeit a colossal pain in the a$$ just about anywhere they go.

  33. Listnfrmafar Says:

Bucs were always out coached. No reason to let up 30 points to Simeon, that’s pathetic.

  34. Rod Munch Says:

Here’s the secret key to the Saints defense…

They literally commit pass interference on every single play knowing the refs will not constantly call it. Evans gets around 60 yards a game in PI calls vs the Saints,m and it could easily be many more times that if everything was called, yet dopes who don’t know what they’re watching will claim he’s being ‘shut down’ – he’s not, he’s be held down, or held, or tackled before the ball gets there, literally every single time. Yet, some idiots out there will say none of that matters because it happens all the time in every game – WRONG, idiot, it doesn’t. The Saints are the only team in the NFL that does this and that is what causes the Bucs so many problems because it messes up the timing of everything.

With that said, even Dirk would normally split with the Saints – and there’s no reason Arians offense can’t do this as well. Just mix things up, stop being so ultra predictable, and use the playaction pass for God’s sake.

  35. gbobucsfan Says:

Mario, we had a great time in NO, except for one guy. He wasn’t even drunk, just a complete @sshat. Everyone else was very super cool. Helps when they just beat Brady….again. P.S. – That stadium is LOUD !

  36. snookman Says:

Say what you want……Saints own our ass. When we are good they beat us……….when we are bad they beat us. That stupid team has a hex over us…………Hell they even beat us with Jameis……….well they were until he got hurt. They beat us with Trevor Simion, Tayson Hill, you name it…………Im frustrated………….we need to figure out the Saints and Rams…………Period!

Yeah I know the 2020 Playoff was different………..I still have a hard time believing that actually happpend………..but it did.

  37. firethecannons Says:

Bucs are gonna lose until they play to win. The Bucs have to start cheating like the saints cheat. saints can’t wait to play Bucs because we let them cheat Evans and all the wideouts have to get chippy and fight back Defense has to play their wideout tight and go for it every play

  38. firethecannons Says:

use ko kieft and run the damn ball and then play action

  39. Listnfrmafar Says:

No PROTECTION, No W!!! Motion, play action, just can’t let the Dline tee off on Brady.

  40. dbbuc711 Says:

Given the Saints history the thing that concerns me is them intentionally trying to injure Brady

  41. Mike Johnson Says:

Our Bucs have quite a few big tight ends who block well. I think this figures well into our gameplan come Sunday.

  42. orlbucfan Says:

We’ve also got a very good young QB named Trask. Since everyone’s been howling about Bucs O woes in the EZ, how about a bootleg option or 2 with Trask? TB is too old. Plus, looks like Mr. Jones pulled a hamie. I’m looking forward to watching the D slowly improve. Mario, Aints fans don’t care if you wear Bucs colors. Their crib is LOUD tho if they have a full house.

  43. stpetebucsfan Says:

Rod I do not disagree with your observation.

The Saints have great coverage which could easily be called PI on many plays.

Against the ‘Boys I thought Carlton Davis played right on the edge of legality very well. We now have a defensive backfield with Davis and Winfield that can rough up the Saints receivers just like they do ours.

Michael Thomas looked like he was far from coming back in the first 3 quarters against the Falcons and then he took the game over in the 4th quarter. He’s the guy we need to repeatedly mug! Would mind some cheap shot PI’s in their half of the field early in the game to send a message and get in Thomas head.

I do NOT want the Bucs to let Thomas beat us like he did the Falcons! Double cover if necessary. He looked like the Thomas of old in that incredible 4th Q.

  44. David Says:

The Saints did not get much pressure.
The Falcons tore up the Saints line in the first half and got a lot of pressure.

I like the Bucs to dominate the trenches and win by over 10

  45. Goatfarmer Says:

orlbuc, take that stuff to Comedy Central.

Have you watched Trask? Nothing about him is “very good” and he’s slower than Brady.

The Trask bootleg is your secret to beating the Saints?!

    ROTFLMAO!

It might just work because the Saints defense would collapse on the field in laughter. There is a greater chance of Annie Agar sending me intimate instagrams than a Trask bootleg on Sunday.

    GTFOOH

  46. Bucschamp Says:

Saints will treat this game as their super Bowl.

Bucs game is the highlight of their season

  47. D-Rok Says:

Oh, Goat, you had me cracking up with your response. Good stuff, man.

  48. Brandon Says:

Not being able to handle a run first QB isn’t always indicative of not being ABLE to get pressure but sometimes moreso being more worried about the QB running and keeping him contained and wanting him to throw the ball.

  49. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

Don’t worry about containing Winston. Under pressure, he typically panics and runs himself into sacks. Stay in your gaps and we’ll be fine. Our linebackers can all pursue.

    Bucs 27-17.
