Tom Brady Absorbs Just Four Quarterback Hits

September 11th, 2022

Legendary night for assistant coach Harold Goodwin.

What a damn good job for the Bucs’ offensive line.

Yeah, it wasn’t perfect and it didn’t look like 2021, but that’s ok.

Rookie left guard Luke Goedeke and first-time center Robert Hainsey blew open their share of holes in the run game and Tom Brady only absorbed two sacks and four QB hits. And the sacks came off the edge against Bucs tackles, not up the gut.

Unlike Jameis Winston, Dak Prescott and Matt Stafford were in their season debuts, Brady was not running for his life on a regular basis. Josh Wells was good enough (with a lot of pass blocking help) jumping in off the bench at left tackle for injured Donovan Smith (elbow).

Someone needs to give a gift to Harold Goodwin, the Bucs’ guards and centers coach who doubles as the run-game coordinator. (Joe Gilbert handles the tackles). His men were up for the prime-time challenge.

    Ok I was proven wrong.

  2. geno711 Says:

Good coaching by the offensive line coaches. Good play by the young guys on the line.

The worst thing we did was complete passes on 3rd down.

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Goedeke & Hainsey looked very good tonight……..good run blocking……

    How wrong was George!

Our offensive line problems are too big to overcome. Lots of 3 and punts . Dallas will dominate time of possession and win easily.

  5. DBS Says:

Let’s see if someone is man enough to eat crow. Easy Cowboy win I recall he said for over a week now.

  6. Yucs2Bucs Says:

2 of the sacks Brady should have thrown the ball, but either 45 is showing or Giselle is really in his head. If they played a good team they would have gotten blown out, but thankfully it’s only the first game and very impressed with Hainsey!!! Now we need to release Perman and get a left tackle

  7. LVMYBUCS Says:

    Derrick Brooks can suck it

  8. Buc4evr Says:

    Any word on Smith?

  9. TheShaz Says:

One of those “Hits” on Brady took out a Dallas defender

Who would have thunk that stretchy rubberband training made you so tough

  10. Buc4evr Says:

Godeke sprung some big runs for Lenny

  11. Posey99 Says:

    Geodeke looked solid

  12. DFW Buc Says:

Love the lack of holding calls. Good job line.

  13. 2022 Fire the Cannons Says:

We need to kick arse in Nola

  14. Austin Lewis Says:

I called this a mile away. Secondary would lock it all down. Carlton Davis blowing up this year

  15. DBS Says:

Who the he’ll listens to Brooks? That’s why you keep him away from running this team or anything to do with it.

  16. ClwJB Says:

They sleighed in both the run and pass game and after just one missed call, they played nearly perfect without DSmith

That block by Fournette on Hyde was just a thing of beauty!!!!

    LFG 1-0

  17. JimmyJack Says:

Right on Joe. OL did a fine job and Brady was looking for biscuits all night.

We did collapse a bit whem D.Smith got banged up. After halftime that problem got much better and Tom had what he needed to get the win!!

That was a very fun game.

    GO BUCS!!!@!!!

  18. ModHairKen Says:

    What a Defense

  19. Jack Sparrow Says:

This could possibly the last time Brady will playing in Dallas. 🥲

  20. David Says:

The O line looked good. Wells got schooled once by Parsons then they helped him a lot. The sack Parsons got spinning to the inside of Smith… I think every single left tackle in the NFL would have given that sack up.
    That was a fantastic move.

I love a good win yet the team still has a lot to work on.

  21. David Says:

Smith slammed his elbow and then they were looking at his hand. Usually that means hitting the funny bone, which is a nerve. I know because mine got busted open in a football game in high school and it paralyzed part of my body but specifically that arm and hand. Freaky feeling but it was fine within a couple days

  22. geno711 Says:

    Time of possession
    32:42 for Bucs
    27:18 for Dallas

    Crushed that.

  23. Cometowin2 Says:

They stepped up. You draft for them to play. Trust in Licht, coaches and staff. Most of all trust in Brady!

Just hope Chris and Donovan are ok! On to the Saints with 1st place up for grabs!

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Just stinks that Leftwich was too stupid to know you might want to help Wells on his first snap, on 3rd down, and instead just leaves him on a island to get blown up.

But man, it seemed like Brady got hit more than 4 times. If that stat is accurate, the line did a much better job than it seemed at the time.

  25. gotbbucs Says:

In the running game this offensive line is very different from what we’ve had in the recent past. These guys can get out and run and pull. Shaq Mason was awesome in the run game.
I’d give a special shout out to our two rookie TE’s as well. They were incredible in the run game too.
This was different and definitely unexpected for me.

  26. DBS Says:

The team still has a lot to work on. Well I sure did not expect them to be a finished product.

  27. Beeej Says:

Niners got curb-stomped, Packers got curb-stomped, RAMS got curb-stomped….DALLAS got curb-stomped (heh.) Not looking too bad for us at the moment

  28. Bucsfan13 Says:

Brady only threw the ball 27x. I love it. Can’t have him playing hero ball all the time. It’s time to move on from Brate

  29. Ed Says:

Fournette block in pass protection was ridiculous. That was textbook! Bucs played team ball. They will be after Winston next week, he is nowhere as mobile as Zack. The Saints couldn’t block Atlanta and the Bucs defense will confuse him.

  30. Buccobill99 Says:

Yucbucboi is that what your source said as well you trolling clown

  31. Buddha Says:

The new left guard is an awesome run blocker

  32. Ash Says:

Lenny blasting Parsons was my favorite moment of the game lmao

  33. MarkR Says:

    4 qb hits, 2 sacks is good, but… TB only threw 27 times. Life will get tougher when TB has to throw 40 times – which will happen. (Last year TB threw 43/game. NFL average passes per game = 35 approx.}

  34. David Says:

    Mark
True but the o line will only get better the more they play.

  35. Crickett Baker Says:

I did not see very much improvement for Darden but the other young guys all had their great moments. I just wish the game was longer. 🙂

  36. Beeej Says:

Hopefully Donnie back–we do NOT need Wells playing much

  37. cmurda Says:

I’m impressed. I thought we would be having a nasty achilles heel of an O Line but they played their butts off. I’m probably most impressed with Wells though Hainsey was easily the best O Lineman not named Wirfs. Hainsey is impressive run blocking. Wells could have been run right out of the building early on but he really settled in and there’s a lot to like considering we are testing the depth at O Line. Some of our guys will get back soon fingers crossed. Until then, the boys can handle the job. I do see why Byron wants to hit the middle. I hate the play but it’s smart. Hainsey is filthy up front and Wells is really good at the seal block. It will start working and best of all we still ran effectively. I dig backup RB White too. I think he is going to pay dividends. Great pick. Great hands. Shifty. Great complement to Lombardi Lenny.

  38. lunchmeat Says:

    My favorite moment from tonight-
Remember when Donovan went down, and Parsons was bullying Wells, and we were all getting Von Miller flashbacks?
Enter LF7. “You chip that guy.”
    BAM! On his ass!
MP11 spent the second half elsewhere.

  39. TheShaz Says:

    ‘lunchmeat’ Lennyh didn’t chip Parsons

    He de-cleated him.

Best plays or keys of the game:

    Evans TD catch
    Bomb to Jones
    Bucs Secondary locking it down
Dallas coaches not using Elliot more
TB12 method, you hit a 45 year old Brady and you hurt yourself
    Lenny running

But I have to agree, Lenny blowing Parsons up was the play of the game 🙂

  40. Ron Potter Says:

Every time we ran to the left, was anyone else looking for our glass-eater? I was 😂

  41. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

They got a long way to go … I don’t think it was that the line looked all that great I think it’s the cowboys looked horrible accept for Parsons! … Brady looked off timing a lot with his receivers (missing 11 days will do that) Gage was barely involved … It looked rough if you think about the teams they’re about to go up against but it looked fixable!!

  42. jimm Says:

i liked mike edwards pass defense, he made up alot of ground to break up that pass along the side-line & winfield was supurb the entire game.

  43. A Says:

I’ll take the win! Going 5 wr against the Saints hasn’t worked…they always out physical us – so I’ll take anything different…Go Bucs! everyone get some treatment – relax for a day and get back at it Wednesday…..

    It’s Saints Week!

  44. Goatfarmer Says:

    Lenny. Lenny.

I’m surprised Micah Parsons didn’t fly through the soft spot in Jerry’s roof that Comarda made. Lennys hit goes down in the lore. I’ve maintained Lenny is the key. Our Bucs beat up on and physically dominated a good Dallas front 7, and the defense made me wonder sometimes is it was 2002 and not 2022.

Bravo Todd. I am happy for you and us.

    Now onto the Slimys.

  45. steele Says:

It was smart to emphasize the run game, which disguises any deficiencies in pass blocking. If they can keep this up, fine. A passing grade for this game.

  46. Bucsfan13 Says:

Since Joe loves to cite NextGen stats, The Pass Block Win Rate for the Buc OL tonight was 46%, which would have ranked last in the NFL last year. Brady helped that OL by dropping deep and releasing the ball quickly. The is not sustainable. Josh Wells had the worst pass block rate.

Licht just cleared money with that Shaq Mason contract. Time to make a move. Anyone is better than Wells!! Wells is a much better run blocker, but we need to protect the QB.

  47. Rod Munch Says:

I still don’t know if I believe there was only 4 hits on Brady, just off the top of my head I can think of him getting hit 4 times, and it’s hard to believe I remember all of the hits that took place in the game.

Bucsfan13 – as for anyone is better than Wells… those are some famous last words. It would be like saying anyone is better than player X, then your team signs Chris Conte or Ryan Smith.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I predicted the line would do well enough, and I predicted another injury. The good news is that it was Donnie…because he will cast up and start next week. The man is a beast.
