Showtime For Carlton Davis

September 10th, 2022

Carlton Davis

Just 24 hours from kickoff feels like the right time for this post.

Stud young Cowboys Pro Bowl receiver Cee Dee Lamb is now the top dog in the Dallas receiving corps. He’s expected to jump this season from 7 or 8 targets per game up among the league leaders at 10. And look for that workload to come in Week 1 tomorrow night against Tampa Bay.

Joe has no doubt that Bucs No. 1 cornerback Carlton Davis will be all over Lamb, perhaps all over the field for most of the game.

If Lamb has a meh night, Joe cannot envision the Cowboys finding a path to victory. Why not? Because Joe doesn’t think Dallas will run the ball effectively on the Bucs (who does?), and after Lamb they don’t have great threats in the passing game.

So one easily could argue that Davis is a major key to victory tomorrow, if not the biggest.

Davis scored a well earned bag in March and he’s now earning $15 million per season at 25 years old. Davis is 100 percent healthy and is being paid to lock down Lamb, hold him to, say, 55 yards and 1 touchdown.

It’s showtime, Carlton! If the world is talking about you as a top-10 cornerback on Monday morning, the Bucs are likely digesting a tasty “W.”

Davis will shut CeeDee down. 4 targets, one catch.

  2. Redeemer Says:

More interested to see how Dean blossoms this year. Davis kind of is what he is, very solid, but not a shutdown guy in my view. Dean has all the measurables to be a tremendous corner. After this year, he might get paid like one. I would like to see both of them play closer to the line of scrimmage though. Thought they gave up way too much space last season.

Davis gets a pick tomorrow night

I don’t think we can really count last year much. SUH & JPP were shells of them selves. The pass rush wasn’t there and all the rest of the DBs were injured. LVD was injured a lot too.
But I agree, hopefully Davis and Dean play a little closer at times because both have the speed to do that.

  5. Cometowin2 Says:

I really like CD3, but when he’s getting 15 million per year, salaries and the. game prices are way out of whack. Sure you can still get noise bleed seats pretty cheap but you can’t really see the game. Put a freeze on both to flight inflation.

    Go Bucs!

  6. #8 Says:

    Davis.

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

    Show up and show out!

  8. JimmyJack Says:

Lamb might play a lot from the slot to give him better matchups. He will catch his share of balls the key will be to get him to the ground. Take away his run after catch and Dallas may struggle to move the ball.

If he does work the slot Winfield needs to be lickin his chops ready to steal some luch money.

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

I think the major key is whoever has to block Micah Parsons.
    That’s my biggest concern.

I have been reading this site daily for the past year or so. I love getting as much news and info I possibly can on the BUCS. Since moving to South Carolina a few years back it’s been a challenge finding ways to watch the games and read up on my team. I enjoy a few of the frequent posters opinions, but not everyone’s. I am a ride or die fan and I am loving the past couple years. It almost feels unreal after going thru the lost decade and football season is so much more exciting these days!! I just say although I am a little worried about the o line I’m confident in the team as a whole and believe with time the young players we have on the line begin to gel. It’s not ideal since Brady isn’t exactly mobile and that seems to be good biggest weakness. That being said he had an ultra fast release and knows where he wants to go with the ball for the most part before the ball is snapped. The line don’t have to dominate, only give Brady a fairly clean pocket for a few seconds. The best thing is we are all about to see first hand what this team looks like!! I am excited to see this defense healthy with the new additions. LFG!!!

  11. Redeemer Says:

David, all true. But, every year counts. All teams deal with injuries. Had the Chiefs actually had an offensive line, the superbowl may have turned out differently. Bowles did nothing to help a shattered secondary, except more blitzing. When your offense is scoring 30 a game, it didn’t make much sense. Just my opinion.

  12. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I thought Jaymiss played for Florida State. Looks like he showed up in Gator gear tonight.

  13. Dooley Says:

Will Levis vs. Kyle Trask next offseason would be dope, but it’s kind of unrealistic and this Richardson kid better use EVERY year of eligibility he’s got before turning pro, he’s not even Antwan Randle El level of college QB

  14. Buc king Says:

I would make us stop the run before I gave up on it..

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

That’s why you double Lamb. I would put Dean and a safety on him most of the game and sometimes Carlton and a safety. If you’re going to single cover someone, single someone else.

If Bowes pulls the KC Chiefs Tyreek Hill 1st quarter single coverage strategy my TV will be in the pool.

  16. 99 55 47 20 Says:

And next Sunday Winston will be digesting an L

  17. Buccos Says:

We have 4 receivers better than CeeDee Lamb. Imagine being named after a type of record?!?

  18. Alvafan Says:

I haven’t heard a coherent reason from Davis or Bowles for the crazy blown coverages that occurred in numerous games last year. Was it scheme? Was it communicating deficiencies? Was it lack of concentration? Nobody knows or if they do their sweeping it under the rug. Top 10 cornerbacks don’t blow coverages. They might get beat. They might gamble and get burned but the don’t look confused and embarrassed. Davis/Bowles need to clean up that crap. No lame excuses or double talk coach speak. If you got 3rd and 25 please force the other team make a play. No more receivers running free and guys with the hands on their helmets shaking their heads.

  19. SCBucsFan Says:

I agree double lamb with Dean and a safety. Dean seems to be a little faster than Davis and plays more physical at the line. Lamb is more of a speed finesse wide out. Only other passing threat they have is the tight end Schultz. I don’t see the boys offense doing much against this defense. It’s going to be a lot of Dak running around holding onto the ball because nobody will be open. Hopefully we can contain him and bring him down because he is capable of beating you with his legs too

  20. Defense Rules Says:

David … ‘SUH & JPP were shells of them selves. The pass rush wasn’t there and all the rest of the DBs were injured.’

You’ve written that conclusion several times now, and the numbers don’t support it. Suh led the DLinemen in terms of sacks, QB hits, QB knockdowns, TFLs & QB pressures. The Bucs’ pass rush was #1 in the NFL measured by total QB pressures (sacks, QB hits, QB knockdowns). And yes we did have a lot of injuries in our Secondary, but it’s not like we had to use WRs back there to fill in. Like Redeemer said … ‘All teams deal with injuries’.

In the final analysis, the Bucs finished 13-4 and made the playoffs. Our defense gave up 20.8 PPG on average, 353 points allowed in 17 games, to rank #5 in the NFL. That’s the highest defensive ranking we’ve had since 2007 when we ranked #3. Saying the same thing over over doesn’t make it fact. Well, unless you’re a politician.

It’s a new season so what they do now matters; But I agree people hating on our defense last year clearly did not recognize how successful they were.

  22. orlbucfan Says:

All of the great Bucs teams in their history had tremendous defenses. Their HOF players are defensive greats. The weakness will be the offense cos of all the inexperience on the OL. Bowles is a defensive mind. I am really looking forward to listening to this one tonight cos of that fact.
