Adam Schefter: Chris Godwin Will Play

September 11th, 2022

Update.

If this is true, it’s the best news Joe has heard since learning Big Storm Brewing ships its bottles of spirits.

Per uber NFL insider Adam Schefter, Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin, who has been rehabbing a surgically repaired knee, is expected to play tonight when the Bucs face the Cowboys at Jerry’s World before a national audience on NBC.

That said, Tampa could remain cautious and slightly limit his reps in the game due to the injury, a source told Schefter.

Godwin suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee in Week 15 last season against the New Orleans Saints and underwent surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews to repair the ligaments Jan. 3. He returned to practice with his teammates Aug. 5, which included purely individual drills. He began participating in some 7-on-7 work Aug. 16 and 11-on-11 work Aug. 22.

Joe has a hunch that Godwin will not start, though there’s disagreement at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters. One Joe thinks the Bucs will honor Godwin’s relentless rehab work with a start. Joe also suspects the Bucs will take it one series at a time with Godwin to determine if he will or can log significant snaps.

This news from the worldwide leader that Godwin may play is a stark contract from when a couple of months ago, when the worldwide leader suggested Godwin would be out until after Thanksgiving.

Yay, modern medical technology!

  1. kgh4life Says:

He may be cleared to play by the Drs, however, there is not need to rush back less than a year removed from an ACL injury. Bucs have enough weapons to score points.

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

The professionals collectively know better than couch hacks, and if Godwin says he’s ready on top of doctor and trainer evaluations, good enough for me.

  3. BucsNoles Says:

This feels like a really bad idea

  4. CleanHouse Says:

    Oh my Godwin

  5. Buccobill99 Says:

    10-15 plays tops

  6. Leighroy Says:

Well, one couch hack here understands that week 1 is not as meaningful as the playoffs. And I want both Godwin and Julio healthy for the late season crunch time and playoffs more so than I care about week 1. Don’t let pride cloud our heads from being prudent!

  7. Elita Vita Says:

My question is do you think they will keep him off the field till after the first Saints game? Don’t need to have him play against a team gunning for him.

  8. geno711 Says:

I am not a doctor although I frequently play one on JoeBucsfan.

Great news for the Bucs. Loved the video of his rehab.

  9. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Did anyone run this start by the Great Karnac Booger McFarland?

  10. BucU Says:

They should fire McFarland if Chris plays tonight.
    Worst take ever.

  11. Tuddie Time Says:

Cooper Kupp went down November 2018 and played week 1 in 2019. First game stats were not great 7 receptions for 46 yards on 10 targets. Godwin is following the same path. Kupp ended 2019 with 94 receptions, 1,161 yards and 10 Tuddies. If CG reaches this milestone, we’ll have our 3rd Lombardi, and Mr. Brady is coming back.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How can you not let him play after putting in the work….if he’s cleared…he should play….

You can’t simply run scared of re-injury……

    And, Booger…..Happy Thanksgiving on 9/11.

  13. geno711 Says:

Gronk went down in December 2013 with ACL. He played no preason snaps in 2014. Had about 100 yards and 2 TD’s in 2014 opener against Pittsburg with Brady at QB.

It has always been interesting the way that Brady can reward players.

“One Joe thinks the Bucs will honor Godwin’s relentless rehab work with a start.”

CG was honored with 20mil of glazer loot a year, hoping they save him for down the line

  15. Cobraboy Says:

    I just woke up.

    Godwin’s gonna play?

    Is it Thanksgiving already?

  16. Bucs Win Says:

Dr Booger is appalled that that are letting CG play this soon.

  17. Goatfarmer Says:

I just had a Thanksgiving Bloody Mary with a turkey leg in it.

  18. Jmarkbuc Says:

    What about Gage?

  19. Alstott up the gut Says:

Great news…. But I agree with Jmark: what is going on with Russell Gage?!?! He is the one that should ease the transition for Godwin.

  20. Infomeplease Says:

Maybe CG gets the start but RG alternates possessions with him! Either way a win win!! My heart and we’ll wishes go with CG!!!! LFG!!!

  21. Armybucfan Says:

I agree if they alternate gage and Godwin to see how they are both holding up Brady should have a field day out there. Our defensive line should also have one hell of a feast if we are to believe the JTS, HICKS, BARRETT, NASSIB, AND VEA or like my daughter likes to call him “MAUI” from Moana are better than our previous two year lineup. I’m so excited to see them in action I pray we put a whopping on Dallas. LFG!!!!!!!

  22. David Says:

    Just do not rush him!!!

The long season is more important than rushing him into play when he’s not ready

  23. Infomeplease Says:

It would make my day if at least once today the offense shows the FAB 4!!! Let the Cowboys try to cover the best group of 4 receivers on any NFL team!! ME, CG, JJ, and RG!!!!! LFG!!!!!!!

  24. Biff Barker Says:

He will play the first series because he’s earned it.

He’ll get a couple of Brady targets early.

Sparing use thereafter unless its a tight game.

  25. ocala Says:

He will be fine unless PJ Williams(from Ocala) delivers another cheap shot on him next week).

  26. Bucschamp Says:

Should be just decoy. Don’t pass him the ball or the defenders will blow his knee

  27. orlbucfan Says:

CG14 got knocked out of playing the rest of last season cos of dirty play by an Aints DB. He learned from it. I hope he limits some of his playing-like-a-TE this year.

  28. Irishmist Says:

If I read CG right, he will play some snaps tonight, but he really wants to be ready for the slimy Saints. I think every day in rehab he has been picturing himself catching a TD against them and then spiking the ball on their emblem.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

David…how do you figure he’s not ready?

The article alone says he’s ready.

    All hands on deck…including Godwin!!!

    LFG Bucs!!!

  30. captivajim Says:

This is NOT the game to start. They (& he) should wait till 1st game on grass field.

they started Gronk too early last yr against slimys & regretted it. This is not a smart move

  31. David Says:

    BUC1987
I’m not saying he’s not ready, I just do not want them to rush him onto the field if he’s not 100%. If he is favoring it and not cutting fully, it’s a recipe to re-injure it or injure something else. We’ve seen it happen with dozens and dozens of athletes over the years.

I hope he plays and is 100%, just being cautious. They have enough fire power

  32. DrunkinYbor Says:

He’ll yeah… After the sliny saints took him out. I thought we wouldn’t see him again until at least 4 games into this season. Good news and lucky horse shoes raining on us.
