Longtime Howard Stern fans know where Joe is coming from here.
Before Stern turned PC in recent years, he always used to play soundbytes of his dad hollering at him when he was a kid. Stern’s dad was a radio engineer and took his son into his Manhattan studio. He let young Howard play around and his dad would interview him like it was a real radio interview.
Howard must have been misbehaving because at one point, his dad yelled, “Don’t be stupid, you moron!”
That’s what went through Joe’s head when head coach Todd Bowles was discussing the Bucs being smart today, the first day in pads, and through the rest of camp.
Yes, the pads come on today! No more underwear football temporarily. Finally Joe will get to hear the pop of shoulder pads and the grunts and groans of real football.
Bowles confessed there is no need for Bucs players to go full-blown Ray Lewis on their teammates. No need to be a hero. In other words, don’t be stupid.
“Well, a lot of supposed sacks may not get there, and a lot of supposed runs may not get there,” Bowles said of the transition from underwear football to real football. “We’ll see what comes of what.
“We’re trying to make each other better and get ready for the season. We understand we’re on the same team. We want heavy competition, but we want to play smart and figure things out.”
While Joe craves physicality, now is not the time to be a hero or to try to break dudes in half. That comes in September.
Joe hopes Bowles has the defense wrap guys up without a call to drive dudes into the ground or to splash them into next week. More hard hits now means less stamina in January or February.

Not crippling your own team members is surely pretty obvious. In the heat of the moment though, ‘stuff happens’. Pity the poor bubble player who’s giving it his all, but in the process of busting his butt to make the team damages one our starters or key rotational guys.

Looks like the Bucs and the Saints will face Deshaun Jackson this year while the Falcons and Panthers will not. First 6 games Deshaun is out include games with Atlanta & Carolina. Bucs play the Browns later on in the season. Go Bucs!

Joe,
On the Ira podcast Ira referenced no music at practice so far, and called for Lawrence Welk to be blasted through the speakers. Given the title this article, why don’t they blast out Shania Twain instead of Welk or CCR? Twain would be a little more hip for the youngsters on the team, ha ha.
