Devin White: I’ve Gotten Better

Devin White watches the Bucs’ second-team defense today in Tennessee.
Joe caught up with Buccaneers savior linebacker Devin White after practice in Tennessee today to set the record straight on something and to get a status check on his summer.
The Tampa Bay defense wasn’t happy with its day against Tennessee (more on that later), but White had an interception in zone coverage against Ryan Tannehill and he feels he’s having an exceptional training camp overall.
“Oh, it’s been going great. I got better. I just got to stay consistent and show it when it counts,” White said.
As for White saying last week that he needs to play with less speed, Joe asked White to clarify for those who might think White is going to be thinking too much or taking away from his greatest strength.
In short, White said playing too fast and not smart enough had him missing too many plays. This year, he said, he’ll find the perfect balance.
“It’s using my strength when it’s time to use your strength, a lot of times you can overrun plays, just be too fast to the ball. You can over-run routes because you know it’s coming, but rather you prefer to slow down, relax, see the cue and then make the break on the ball, “White said. “… I gotta use the speed smarter. But when I’m blitzing I’m all out. Just when you get to the quarterback you got to tone it down because one step from him will make you miss. You know, all around, even in coverage, be more patient and trust my speed an ability to close.”
Joe sure hopes White can better harness his speed and combine it with the smarts and timing he’s seeking. White’s one of the few Pro Bowlers who can get a lot better; he’s that talented.

He’s saying all the right things. Love this guy’s fire. Really hope he takes that step forward this season bc LVDs click is ticking.

The speed is why I wanted us to draft him (too high of a pick according to some here for a LB at #5)…but he’s right. You have to slow it down sometimes and let it come to you….thats what happens with speed.

That is a good take by Devin. Fits what the eyes have seen. With his energy, trying too hard is a detriment.
Now let’s see it against Dallas and then in the games that follow.

I don’t get all the hate on this guy. he has the fire in the belly. if anything, the other teams learned from our blitzes and it wasn’t as effective last year after they had him all geared up for that. He will adjust and be great.

Don’t back off too much on the pass rush Devin cause if you can get the QB off his spot he may run into another lineman’s arms or maybe even rush his delivery and throw it to another buc.
