Cyril Grayson Waived

August 25th, 2022

Gone.

UPDATED 10:24 a.m. – The great story of the immortal Cyril Grayson has taken a depressing turn.

The former LSU speedster who seemed to have developed a rapport with Tom Brady is gone to make room for linebacker Genard Avery.

Grayson could and did take the top off defenses and Brady targeted him. He caught the winning touchdown in the January Jets game made famous by whackjob Antonio Brown. Grayson also made a big catch late in the loss against the slimy Saints at New Orleans.

This surprises the Joe typing here because Grayson is a very good blocker and, of course, can run deep. So he is a threat from the slot as well as outside.

In recent practices, Grayson’s snaps dwindled to just about nothing. That is a sure sign, less than a week before the final cutdown, that a guy needs to be renting.

Officially, Grayson was cut with an injury designation, so if the rest of the NFL considers him useless, then he’ll come back to the Bucs on injured reserve.

Truly sorry for Grayson….NFL and reality sometimes can be cruel…..

  2. gp Says:

    PS

  3. geno711 Says:

He certainly is good enough for a top 6 position but really this is ok to me.

Does he keep any defensive coordinators up at night worrying about how to match up with him. Of course not.

    He is JAG.

  4. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Maybe they’ll resign him in the practice squad.

  5. Dooley Says:

Stinks, but can’t forget Bucs cut Perriman after the season he had in 2019 which was about triple the catches, yardage, and scores Grayson had in 2021.

  6. SB~LV Says:

    Thompkins

  7. Ko Kiefer Says:

Dooley – Perriman became a free agent in 2020 and signed a big contract at 10/mil a year with the Jets. The Buccaneers have never cut him.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There really was no way Grayson was going to make the final 7 WR Cuts…….after the 4…….Johnson, Miller, Perriman, Darden, Thompkins & maybe Sterns were ahead of him.

  9. BucsfanFred Says:

    Good luck Cyril.

  10. Marques Says:

This guy is injured a lot. He’s like Joey the white tiger Galloway. Can’t be counted on regularly.

  11. CrackWise Says:

Hmmm, IR/Redshirt type deal. I expect at least one other guy (Sterns/Thompkins) to get the same treatment as next season will see these guys again.

  12. PassingThru Says:

I hope he catches on somewhere as a roster player.

I still remember his first season with the Bucs, back when he was intercepting passes with his helmet on go routes. It was great comedy relief, but to be fair I thought he improved on his ball tracking while he was in Tampa Bay.

  13. Hodad Says:

No mention what the injury was, or if that’s what’s kept him out of the action the last two games. This should be a wake up call to Perriman. We can’t have our back up receivers being injury prone. Seems like Grayson, Perriman, and Scooter are always dealing with some kind of tweak.

  14. Winny Testaverde Says:

Bummer. From Dan Featherstone “doink” off the helmet to game winning TD vs The Jets. I like(d) this guy…true underdog story…hope he makes it somewhere.

  15. Dewey Selmon Says:

He’ll bounce back and end up at the Ramada Inn Vero Beach….

  16. Winny Testaverde Says:

Nice Dewey…he can co-bartend with the fellow immortal one…like the fellas from Cocktail and/or Issac Washington.

  17. Casual Observer Says:

I liked Grayson a lot. Just too much talent around, I guess. I suspect he will sign elsewhere.

  18. D-Rome Says:

He’s good enough to be in the NFL for sure. The Bucs WR room is stacked. Numbers game. He’ll stick in the league somewhere.

  19. Pewter941 Says:

    Practice squad eligible?

  20. Marine Buc Says:

Like most track stars who attempt to transition over to football – injuries got the best of him… Not to mention Grayson doesn’t play any special teams. Anyone who is on the bubble better be able to contribute on special teams…

Good luck dude. Maybe we will see you later.

  21. Capt.Tim Says:

    Too bad.
Poor kid- he’ll probably end up a cowboy

  22. Goatfarmer Says:

Damn. I figured he was going to make the team. Hope PS.

  23. Greg G Says:

bummed about this one. I honestly wish they’d chosen to waive Perriman over Grayson. But I don’t think either of them makes the 53 man roster. It’s a testament to the staff that they’ve found/developed/signed so much talent at WR. Best of luck to Cyril, he’s a local favorite and looks like a player that can/will play in the league.

  24. Oxycondoms Says:

Felt like him and perriman being injured for rams game was just as impactful as brown quitting

  25. Pete Says:

I really liked that guy. Unfortunate.

  26. teacherman777 Says:

    Hes hurt.

We will lose receivers by week 8.

    It’s a long season fellas.

I love Cyril and wish him well!

  27. Craig Says:

I hope he makes it to the Bucs injured reserve.

Come playoff push, he could be instrumental again, when Evans and Godwin need a break.

If he isn’t here he could do that for someone else, to our detriment.

I think he had the highest up side of any receiver last season. His hands were getting better, as was his route running. He was the best downfield blocker we had.

  28. Rob3810 Says:

Waived injured means if he isn’t claimed on the waiver wire he reverts back to the Bucs. Tampa can then do one of two things: put him on IR, which means he’s out for the year, or waive him w/ an injury settlement. He’s then free to sign w/ anyone, including the Bucs later down the line.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

I suspect he will be back.

Injury settlement means he can come back if the parties agree.

This team has a lot invested in him.

  30. Joey Strom Says:

I had high hopes for Grayson and wish him the very best.

  31. Mike Johnson Says:

Somebody will pick this man up. He is no slouch. Man can Ball.

  32. David Says:

Wishing him the best. Given the depth of the receiver room though, this is not surprising. He’s a bit older (28?), some of the other guys like Thompkins are several years younger and can hide on the practice squad a little easier
