Tom Brady The Gunslinger

July 15th, 2022

Gunslinger.

There were all sorts of questions about how Tom Brady would do when he came to the Bucs.

Would he be a good fit with then-Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians? Brady liked to play ball control. Yes, he would pass a bunch but they were precision short passes to slot receivers and the running back.

Arians was Mr. No Risk It No Biscuit. Throw deep early and often and keep firing. How would the two mix?

As it turned out, incredibly well. There is an unwritten rule in football that if you throw 50 times in a game, it’s very likely a loss. Football norms don’t apply to Tom Brady.

It seems Brady was 3-2 last year when throwing 50 times in a game. The rest of the quarterbacks in the league combined had three wins when they threw 50 times in a game.

And Brady was 44!

Reality for Brady seems like a fantasyland for the rest of us. This guy isn’t human.

As I already told the Joes months ago his lifetime is just as good, in fact he is only QB of note to have a solid winning record when throwing over 50 times. Not even the great Payton.

  2. Chris Tucker@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I was a bit worried if Brady had the arm strength to thrive in our offense, and he does.

  3. Toopanca Says:

That chart should have been the clinching argument for selecting him as the league MVP on top of his other league leading numbers!

  4. Dean Giusti Says:

He’s so good that when he hangs em up we go right back to obscurity.

  5. tampabayallday Says:

    big iron on his hip

  6. SB~LV Says:

    He is a multifaceted Assassin!

  7. ModHairKen Says:

Analysis, please. How many passes were thrown because of being behind? How many as a result of the running game being weak?

  8. Beeej Says:

    Does it matter?

  9. Alanbucsfan Says:

    2021 NFL Offensive Play selection-
Bucs passed 66.2% – highest in league, rushed 33.8% -lowest in league (regular season).
It will be interesting to see if Leftwich/Brady adjusts to more rushing plays in 2022.

Pinch us all. Whoever follows is going to suck in comparison.

Realize how lucky we are….thats all i have to say….

  13. William Walls Says:

That breakdown shows the difference between throwing on almost every down because you have to vs. because you want to.

  14. Bucsfan13 Says:

If Brady throws the ball 50x a game this year, we will be in trouble. People seem to forget that he will be 45 when the season starts! It’s just not prudent to have our 45 yr old QB dropping back so much. It’s interesting that Bowles said the goal is to make Tom’s job easier. I would think that means more diversity in our offensive game plan. Bowles knows placing our entire hopes on the arm of an older QB is dangerous.

  15. Ash Says:

Bucs will throw alot this season as well I would imagine they won’t change what is working for them to appease fans.

  16. Adrnagy Says:

Bucs will run alot this year. Or at least first 7 games until godwin is 100% and brady develop chemistry with gage , otto and other TE.

Brady will throw over 4000 yds for sure. With bowles allowing brady to do whatever he wants in offense. No holding back.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

    That is a fun fact.

  18. Oddball Says:

    ModHair,
The games were Dallas, LA, Atlanta, Jets and Rams. Easy enough to see you’re probably right outside of the Falcons game.

  19. directdriver Says:

Colin Cowherd has been touting that stats for years even in his ESPN days way before that chart. The rule does not apply to Brady. The man dink-n-dunk’ed his whole career to 10 Super Bowl appearances!

  20. steele Says:

I would like to see Brady cap his career with a season heavy on ball control and smart play calling. He had fun gun-slinging with Air McDaniels (when he had Randy Moss, for instance), and definitely coming to Tampa freed him up to gun sling, but don’t want to see it now.

Build a strong team around him led by D and smashmouth, and let him pick his shots. Win a SB. Noodle arm Peyton Manning and Elway both had that luxury in their final seasons with Denver.

  21. Buczilla Says:

I wasn’t convinced until he won a super bowl with us, but Brady is the best athelete to ever compete, regardless of the sport. It also doesn’t hurt that he has the best wide receiver over the last five years to throw to and a loaded offensive side of the roster. Fun times and if he comes back in 23, even better.

  22. Ed Says:

All those many and productive Brady to Gronk seam routes weren’t dink ‘n dunks, they were a blur of game-changing cannon fire.

If anything, Brady passes to hard, but then, only the best receivers can handle it; so only the best last long enough to be regular targets. It works.

I had high hopes for Gio, for example. But, from what was displayed on many plays is that, Gio, at age 31 couldn’t keep-up with Brady’s quick, hard-pass and precise-route demands.

If Brady has any, even remotely accurate reputation for dink n’ dunk, it’s only because of the great fortune to have had James White and Julian Edelman as previously mentioned receivers who “made-the-grade.” And they just happened to be a great receiving back and a great slot receiver, respectively.

When Brady had the classic wideout receiver in the great Randy Moss, what happened? Brady was the great deep ball quarterback.

    Tidbit:
Brady announced his comeback from retirement on March 13rd.

The Patriots signed their own free agent, James White, on
    March 15th.

Looking forward to Buccaneer Rachaad White this year.

  23. Kobe Faker Says:

“Who will be TB12 reliable hot receiver when the blitz comes thru?

No more AB, Gronk and Godwin will be out

Defenses will continuously Blitz until TB12 finds that player and moves the chain and slowdowns the blitz”

    Kobe Faker

  24. Darin Says:

    Love
Defenses won’t. (See Brady’s career) Try a better take next time

  25. Eddie Marz Says:

Brady’s arm was never weak. His last year in New England there were no deep threat’s. That’s THE ONLY REASON he dinked and dunked it. Can’t believe this narrative is still going on. GOBUCS!

  26. Ed Says:

    Typo correction:
“If anything, Brady passes to hard”
That should read: “too” hard, not “to” hard.
Sorry, HAD to correct that 🙂
