Mike Evans To Make A Push For MVP?

July 15th, 2022

“Mike, I’ve got enough hardware to throw to the next boat. You need some more.”

It isn’t just gamblers who think Mike Evans may have his best season in the NFL. And that’s saying a whole bunch.

Some gamblers believe Evans may just lead the league in receiving yards. Kevin Patra of NFL.com takes that a step further. If the Bucs blow through the regular season on the shoulders of quarterback Tom Brady, Patra suggests don’t be shocked if Evans is in the running for MVP.

Why is that?

Well, the Bucs’ receiving corp as of the second week of July isn’t what it once was. While last week Joe got good news on rehabbing wide receiver Chris Godwin — he could play in Week 1 — that seems a stretch at this point. It’s more hope now than a certainty. It does, however, sound as if Godwin’s rehab is going well.

Then two big guns from last year, whacked-out quitter Antonio Brown is gone and foot-rubbing Rob Gronkowski is retired. Then there is Russell Gage’s mysterious injury, though Joe has had his ear to the ground and it seems Gage will be ready to roll when camp opens. Add it all up, and Patra believes Evans is going to have a monster season.

… Evans is Tom Brady’s most trustworthy target heading toward the 2022 season. Evans has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in all eight of his seasons, the longest such streak to begin a player’s career. He caught 14 TDs last season, second-most behind only Cooper Kupp. Turning 29 years old this year, Evans still has the juice to hit even higher heights. With Brady slinging the pigskin like he’s 30 years old and Evans’ penchant for big plays, the duo could put up wacky numbers — think Randy Moss in his first year in New England. With Evans’ red-zone acumen and no Gronk, the wideout could see enough end zone targets to threaten Moss’ single-season TD record (23).

If somehow Godwin returns for Week 1, or even if it is something more realistic like Week 3, that’s going to take a lot of targets and therefore yards away from Evans. Same if Gage is fine. That’s not a bad thing because even Evans will admit the Bucs’ passing attack is more lethal with Godwin, and surely with Gage, too.

Joe finds it fairly interesting that many NFL types, whether it is gamblers or analysts, can see Evans racking up yet another 1,000-yard season with lots of touchdowns. And maybe an MVP award.

While in Vegas this week, Joe acted accordingly.

1000+ yards and a bunch of TDs would not surprise.

It’s what Evans does. Every. Single. Season.

But- MVP would surprise me, as that would mean he would prob be the leading receiver for # of yards too, and while I think he’ll go over 1000, I don’t think he’ll be at say 1400 or so… Brady still spreads the ball around.

    Would be cool af though.

  3. Proudbucsfan Says:

It wouldn’t surprise me, I know he could do it and if anyone deserves that kind of success it’s Mike Evans.

  4. Buczilla Says:

Nobodys Randy Moss, but Mike is certainly is capable of mvp numbers. Despite what Ira (love ya man!), Simms, and a handful of numbnut Evans bashers here will try to peddle, Mike is far and away the best receiver over the last five years.

  5. Alstott up the gut Says:

This would of course seal the deal, but I truly hope Mike Evans plays his whole career in Tampa, is put in the Ring of Honor, and most of all, ends up in the Hall of Fame!

  6. Adrnagy Says:

The way i see it is … lenny #1 option. Later on week 7 and on passing or balance.

I was at Cosmopolitan this week for a staycation. Were you staying at Aria, as is the norm for you?

The two hottest days of the year so far were this past week.

I hate the summers here, although the people I know in Tampa tell me that the heat, nearly year-round, is worse than ever.

For nine months of the year, the weather here is pretty great.

Another MGM property (for now) the Mirage. Make two trips to Vegas a year. Aria in the spring and Mirage in the summer.

  9. Bird Says:

Mike is one of my favorite bucs of all time. Top 3 for sure.

But cmon. He will get doubled and doubled some more.

  10. Beeej Says:

Mike had 114 targets last year, Kupp had 145

I want ME to catch a SB TD ….

  12. Cobraboy Says:

I would suspect if Evans racks up a bunch of yards and tuddies, it is Brady who is in the MVP race.

  13. Goatfarmer Says:

I love Mike. Just was given ME13 red jersey for my birthday. But everyone will be doubling Mike. They saw what he did to Jalen Ramsey. Unlike Todd Bowles, most other teams know to double your best receiver. For Mike to bust through all that and have a Moss of a season….well, unlikely but if it happens I’ll be ecstatic.

I love me some Mike Evans, but in whose world would he ever be MVP? It’s always a QB. If the Bucs blow through the regular season on the shoulders of TB12, Brady will be the MVP. I mean think about last year. Kupp was the man. Was he the MVP? Nope. Neither will be ME13, regardless of the season he has. Let’s just hop he has a great season and the Bucs win another SB.

  15. Captain Oblivious Says:

Kupp put up historic numbers last year and wasn’t even a serious MVP contender. If Evans puts up amazing numbers this year that means that TB12 did too. In that case, TB12 should get the MVP but Rogers will steal it with mediocre numbers.

  17. It's A Bucs Life Says:

Evans is more likely to squeek by 1,000 yards than he is to lead the league in receiving. Gotta be dominant to be a MVP and Evans just isn’t that guy

  18. David Says:

I see 1200 yards and 12 tuddies. I think Gage is fine and Godwin returns before week 5. I just hope they don’t push Godwin too soon.

  19. Goatfarmer Says:

PSL Bob – the winning point.

Kupp deserved the award, certainly more than Karen Rodgers that whiny choking biotch. If Kupp couldn’t win it last year, fuggettaboutit for Mike.

  20. 1#bucsfan Says:

Bin thinking the same. This is going to be ME13 best year yet.
