Downgraded Passing Attack

July 17th, 2022

Adjusting to fewer targets.

The Bucs have Tom Brady. All is right with the world. Right?

Well, the folks at WalterFootball.com aren’t so sure.

Week 1 is still in play for rehabbing Chris Godwin, but that still feels like wishful thinking at this point. A good sign, regardless. And yes, Brady is back and that is a larger than large cog in the Bucs’ passing attack. However, the crowd at WalterFootball seems to be bracing Bucs fans for a downturn in the offense.

No furniture-tossing, bicycle-throwing, V-card-forging Antonio Brown, a less-than-100-percent Godwin and no foot-rubbing Rob Gronkowski means less fear in defenses.

To add to the angst, Joe will point out that rookie tight end Cade Otton has yet to catch one pass from Brady, not even in underwear football because he has been rehabbing his surgically repaired ankle. So Otton is behind the eight ball and a total wild card. He could be awesome; he could be a dud. Nobody has a clue yet.

Missing proven, reliable bodies returning in the passing game, Joe is confident Mike Evans and Playoff Lenny will be targeted quite often by Brady, especially in September.

Let Lenny eat. Wear down defenses then hit em with the good ol ME13 special.

  2. Adrnagy Says:

As of week 1,2,3 very manageable offense of youre the opposing defense.

    1- godwin not 100%
    2- gage , new
    3- no threat on TE
4- WR depth , disappointment last year.

5- Kick /punt return game will be same. Nothing.

The only factor is the run game and /RB. Screen, pass , play action.

  3. Goatfarmer Says:

And what does Gisele think? Her opinion is important.

  4. Proudbucsfan Says:

Evans is going to be great this season with 75 catches 1,500 yards 16 TD’s

  5. Buczilla Says:

Another tight end and wide receiver off of the scrap heap would ease my mind since it’s worked out well for us.in the past.

  6. 2022 Year of the GOAT RETURN Says:

Repition in practice will make it happen….. Tom knows how to do it…..

  7. Bird Says:

Trust me. Bucs know what brady is saying “one year but i may change my
Mind”. They realize its all in until its not.

With brady – They have winning culture/ relevancy/ prime time games on tv / national coverage/ highest jersey merchandise with brady/ sold out tickets/ super bowl discussion

They are not done making moves. For some reason i feel OBJ is coming here. Not saying that puts them over the top for the whole thing…but that would ease the loss of gronk. Go 4 receiver wide. Godwin a big tough dude and line him up like gronk towards line. And then evans / gage / obj and watch that offense blow up

Brady knows the bucs have given him everything. Why stop letting the man know. Heck there may be discussions w players we dont know about. This
Bucs team is loaded. There are a few concerns but every team has a few. If we can avoid injuries …look out.

    TB is the glue

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No problem….if all else fails, we have a new punter that will pin them back.

  10. Biff Barker Says:

The only thing we know is what we saw the last two seasons. Too many changes on the roster to start making predictions. We still have a roster full of great players and the greatest QB ever.

  11. kyle Says:

evans may end up being the best buc of all time!!! sorry 55??

  12. GR-Buc Says:

Let the Oline eat early. They will be our strongest, healthiest and perhaps best unit on the field.

I predict heavy run and screen game early in the season!

  13. Marine Buc Says:

The Bucs need someone to step up – Miller, Perriman, Grayson, Thompkins, Johnson – one of these guys needs to have a solid season…

I would also like to see us adding another TE (Cook/Rudolph?) and C. Otton stay healthy and have a solid year as well.

  14. Lakeland Steve Says:

I can see another tight end, but unless the Bucs think he is totally washed up re-sign JPP

  15. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

All very legit points from WalterFootball. However, Evans is better than Cooper Kuup IMO. ME can be the go-to guy for sure. He did not get as many targets bc we had Gronk, AB and a healthy Godwin.

The Bucs will add another FA TE, Gage will be very good, IMO the Bucs running game will be even better and another WR will step up. And lets also factor in, again IMO, I think our secondary will be better this year as we have more depth and I don’t think we will have as many injuries.

  16. RandsABucFan Says:

What about Russel Gage? He should garner a lot of targets.

  17. Victoria brown Says:

This is why Brady never has go to guys..he works with starters backups and practice squad..half the players named did not play the whole season…every body catches in brady offense …so I expect the same passing because Brady likes to pass

  18. Goatfarmer Says:

    Todd.

  19. cfm Says:

I believe that Deven Thompkins will make the team and will be just as good as AB

  20. Thadeus Says:

Should have gotten something for Godwin. Picked a quality RB.

  21. GOB Says:

I can’t believe licht wasn’t more active in the FA market. This is, and should be an all in year for the bucs. I think they are at least one weapon short. Both playoff teams they faced last year got better. The bucs got worse.

  22. Trey long Says:

TB won a Super bowl w NO GRONK, NO RUNNING GAME, A BACK UP TIGHT END, AN INJURED ROOKIE who immediately retired after, and little Amendola, Edelman, and James White.
The offense will be fine. It’s defensive pass defense that is the problem and specifically coaching.

  23. Beeej Says:

I think we can safely rule out Orson Charles as a tight end candidate

  24. GOB Says:

Trey, the Patriots ranked 7th in rushing in the 2016 campaign. After Gronk came into the league, Brady has a 4-3 playoff record without him. No team will ever come back from a 28-3 deficit in the Superbowl again. Gronks loss would be less severe if they had a capable replacement. Two rookies, one recovering from ankle surgery and Cam Brate won’t cut it.

  25. PassingThru Says:

OBJ is still out there. I’m getting the impression that the Bucs are not “all in”, my fear is that ownership is treating this season as a cash cow. They have roughly enough capspace to sign OBJ outright. It isn’t just this season, if there’s to be any chance of snagging Brady for an additional year or two, you have to upgrade the receiving options. Gage was signed, but he’s no Antonio Brown. Godwin is still a question mark. Gronk is gone. The Bucs have lost significant firepower. The only way to make up for it is signing OBJ.

  26. BucBoy Says:

Ask the Trask haters. They know all about Trask, who hasn’t played yet; surely they know all about Otton too. 😂

Why does everyone diss Scottie Miller! Yes I get that it’s a “what have you done for me lately” league and Scottie virtually disappeared last year with the turf toe.

But he’s back this year and rocked up in shape and hopefully the toe is OK. He is STILL a deep threat that D’s cannot afford to ignore. Just ask Green Bay safety Redmond and the other safety who slaps his helmet with his hands.

Brady threw that ball once he saw the safeties out of position as soon as Scottie drew even with the CB. Remember the old saying? If he’s even he’s leavin”!

All my posts go into moderation so I thought I’d share a legal link to the Youtube video and Joe Buck’s play by play…starts off with Buck saying…if the Bucs do not gain any yards it’ll be a 57 yard FG attempt.

Most folks thought Brady would hit ME or take a gain that helped the Bucs stretch as 4 point lead into a seven point lead with just 20 seconds left actually 8 by the time the ball is snapped.

But NOOOO…as soon as Brady sees Scottie pull even with the CB he lets her go and the rest is history. An 11 point lead was sure better than a 7 point lead if the Bucs had even converted an FG!

This highlights STILL excites me and they’ve added Celine Dion music from Titanic! Don’t write off Scottie Miller this season. If he’s truly healthy we know Brady not afraid to go bombs away to Scottie.
