Getting A Lot Out Of A Little

May 5th, 2022

GM Jason Licht

If the Bucs didn’t have a sexy enough draft for you with names you heard Mel Kiper, Todd McShay and others babble about daily, relax.

It seems the Bucs made the most out of little draft capital. That’s the contention of Sheil Kapadia of The Athletic. He liked the Bucs trading out of the first round and adding multiple picks. He gave the Bucs a “B+” for last weekend’s effort.

The Bucs didn’t have a whole lot to work with, but I thought they did an excellent job balancing short-term and long-term needs with this group.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht’s moves were smart because good teams are unlikely to hit immediate home runs with a late-first-round draft pick, not like teams sitting at, say, No. 7 or even No. 16. The Bucs had the No. 27 pick before trading back to No. 33 and the first picks of Rounds 4 and 6.

Could Logan Hall or Zyon McCollum or Cade Otton become Pro Bowlers and key cogs in an immediate Super Bowl championship? Sure. But the later you pick, the steeper the odds. That’s not a slam, that’s just the way the draft works.

So Licht seems to have gotten a lot out of having not that much when the draft began.

    Moneyball – Expert level!!!

  2. Austin Says:

Solid Draft overall, Good depth and contributors

  3. GOB Says:

Drafting late obviously presents more challenges. Drafting with a Superbowl ready team, I expected Licht to take more chances. All teams draft for need. But, the reality is these picks will have a difficult time making the 53. If you can get two contributing players out of this draft, Licht will have done well

Everything looks great on paper. One thing i appreciate is the effort the FO took to vet these players. Hopefully we added some fire in the belly I cant wait for the season to start. LFG!

  5. Cho Says:

Joes on fire. 8 articles so far today?

  6. Pewter941 Says:

If you count Shaq, we got 9 players in this draft.

  7. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Everyone is happy the week after the draft. All 32 teams thought they got great value.

  8. Bucs Guy Says:

I think most fans aren’t upset with the players chosen and that they can contribute. Those upset with pics seemed to believe the Bucs reached too much on some picks in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds as they may have been available with the next Bucs pick. Unfortunately, there is no way to ever know that.

Personally, I don’t see any pro bowl stand outs today, but I see a number of significant contributors potentially for 8-10 years.

  9. Dooley Says:

We walked in with 6 picks and walked out with 8 players, with our cap situation in mind plus the state of our depth chart, I’d say we made out pretty well. Maybe not comparable to the moves & player a team like the Jets made, But I’d rather not endure what they had to have 7 picks in the first 4 rounds. Licht, McCartney, Biehl, Spytek, BA, Bowles and the rest of the front office were cookin with fire.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

For those complaining about the punter at the bottom of the 4th….saying we could have gotten one in the 5th or 6th…….FYI…..at the time, we had no fifth or sixth round picks….

And, I agree….you have to give Licht credit for Shaq Mason by using a 2022 fifth round pick…..makes the draft even better.

  11. GOB Says:

I consider the mason pickup more of a free agent signing. It was essentially a salary dump by the Patriots. He was traded for a throwaway pick. Trying to make it appear as a draft pickup, isn’t accurate.

  12. Lakeland Steve Says:

And God said let there be Licht!

  13. Alanbucsfan Says:

The problem with drafting a punter/kicker in 4th round is the coaches and GM are under pressure or biased to make sure the pick makes the team whether he sucks in pre season or not, wheras a FA punter/kicker – it’s just best player wins the job.

  14. ClwJB Says:

All I know is whoever is in charge of scouting for special teams needs to be replaced immediately

Our poor coverage teams are only surpassed in grossness by our woeful return persons

BLOW IT UP and Start over on ST

Looks like they already started with the K and P 👍

  15. Bucsfan4ever Says:

I’m a little worried about Logan’s size, but l like all the others, except the punter. Even that 7th rounder had 3.5 sacks in 3 games before his injury. 50/50 he turns into a good find. Not bad for 7th round. That 6th is a real mauler..
    Don’t remember the names.

  16. Allbuccedup Says:

Agree with Alanbucsfan 100% and the Ray Guy award winner wasn’t picked until round 6.

  17. Allbuccedup Says:

Other than that it was a good draft.

Goedeke was a major reach-Goedeke was projected 3rd or 4th round by everyone , Goedeke is not a TRUE guard which is what was available in ALL SEC G Ed Ingram of LSU taken 2 picks later and Ingram has a mean streak about a mile long. Let’s see – pick an ALL SEC TRUE Guard or a ALL MAC tackle???????? Draft was a C- at best , passing on the best LB in the draft in Devin Lloyd and having LVD replacement starting on Day 1 is a complete lack of vision and value. Drafting any player that kicks a ball for a living is a waste- pure and simple , but it is not like Licht does not have a history of wasting picks on kickers. Love my Bucs , but not this draft.

  19. steele Says:

There was talent and good fits for needs passed up at every position. That’s the main thing. Even if you put that aside, they were all reaches except for Hall and McCollum. A 4th for Camarda was ridiculous.

Who would’ve you drafted? So we can see how you did head to head with Licht in 3 or 4 years?

You do realize that playing in the SEC doesn’t mean you’re gonna be star in the NFL, right? If so, JaMarcus Russell would be a Hall of Famer.

Amway Joe in Pure Michigan still flex’n with the quotes then call outs? I can’t imagine this lil’ buckaroo at parties…and that’s even without his Amway pitch for bizness.

Whiny Winny: I thought you said you were going to go to rehab for your addiction to whine…What happened, little buddy?

  24. Esteban85 Says:

GOB- he was traded for a fifth. That’s twice we’ve fleeced your pats for a fifth. How can it not be comparable. Instead of using the fifth round pick we traded it for Shaq how could it be any more straight forward. Sorry your team got the short end of the stick, but hey you got Strange! Haha
