“Controlled Rage”

May 15th, 2022

Rookie guard Luke Goedeke

The Buccaneers’ second pick in Round 2 last month has mastered the art of tough-guy talk.

But what makes it fun and alluring is how naturally the chatter comes off Luke Goedeke’s tongue.

Goedeke is an older rookie who turns 24 in November, and he seems to appreciate how his journey brought him from a nowhere-Wisconsin rural high school to become a Division-III tight end — before moving to Division I Central Michigan and transitioning to offensive tackle.

The Bucs made him the No. 57 overall pick in the draft after trading up with Buffalo to get him.

Despite his humble football start, Goedeke talks now like he belongs and is steaming with confidence at every turn. Last week he shared how he’s not concerned about penalties because he plays with “controlled rage” while he’s looking to punish defensive lineman.

He insists that he had no issue in college with penalties while dancing the line of clean play and an alley brawl. If NFL refs tell him to calm down, Goedeke said he’s the kind of guy to listen immediately and process the order while maintaining his fire.

Goedeke said he loves being cursed at by Bucs offensive line coach Harold Goodwin. It’s a coaching style he loves and it feeds his rage.

As Joe has written previously, it’s going to be so fun to see Goedeke battle in spring and summer practice. He’ll probably break all the unspoken rules of how to play with and without pads.

All the veterans in the Bucs trenches could use the shot of juice Goedeke and fellow second-round pick defensive lineman Logan Hall will bring.

Joe, if you’re trying to get us hyped on Goedeke, it’s working…

  2. Leighroy Says:

There’s a difference between having a fire while blocking someone and carelessly holding or hitting guys after the whistle. I hope he knows the difference, took Jensen a few years to figure it out but thankfully he has.

  3. Bucsfan4ever Says:

I’d hate to lose that cowboys game over a stupid penalty.

  4. The Daily Coroner Says:

I hope he blocks like Jensen and drives his man clear out of bounds on national TV. And knocks a few down and then pounces on them – all before the whistle of course!

  5. Lt. Dan Says:

Goedeke next to Ryan Jensen…those dudes are gonna feed off of each others intensity. Add Shaq Mason and Wirfs to the mix with an honorable mention to Donavan Smith for his improved play last year. My my my……!

  6. firethecannons Says:

I think we are gearing up to run the ball anytime we want.
Wish our defense wasn’t so full of holes, need better linebacker depth. Lavote David id getting injury prone and White falls apart when he is gone.

  7. SPARKY Says:

Sounds like we should move him to the other side of the ball.

  8. A Bucs Fan Says:

If the Bucs truly transition to being more run oriented I could see two running backs with 1000 scrimmage yards and 8+TD’s each.

  9. GOB Says:

This guy should flourish at LG. His main criticism coming out was his lack of length, which caused him problems at RT, especially against speed rushers. His deficiencies make him logically an interior lineman. I think they got this guy, and Shaq Mason, to maul people in the run game. Brady is at his best when utilizing play action.

  10. Marine Buc Says:

Controlled rage is similar to friendly violence…

  11. D-Rok Says:

I was initially concerned losing our 2 guards. Now, however, I have a good feeling about our O-line. If we can run more, we should be more balanced on O, leading to better time of possession. I we have better TOP, our Defense will be more rested, leading to better quality of plays. I like the direction this team is seemingly headed.

    GO BUCS!!

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The more I study this draft class, the more I like it……we have some players with great intellect, character and physical skills. I’m confident our coaching staff will be up to the task.
I wouldn’t bet against every single one of them (even our 7th rounder) making the team.

Goedeke gained roughly 75 pounds from his first year at CMU to now. In order to bulk up, he said he ate 7,000 calories a day and lived in the weight room.

He was an athlete in high school.
He played basketball all four years, averaging 20.2 points and 7.7 rebounds as a senior. As a result, he was a unanimous first-team All-Conference member. He also participated in track, competing in the 100 meters, shot put, and discus.

He has been working out with renowned OL trainer Paul Alexander this offseason.

One comparison was made to Rodger Saffold, a 12-year NFL pro.

  14. Goatfarmer Says:

I love this dude! Then Ko Kieft is playing on Donnie’s other shoulder. Run left, Lenny!

  15. GOB Says:

Exactly D-Rok. The bucs need more long scoring drives. It demoralizes defenses. It also causes opposing offenses to play mistake free football, and make every drive count.

  16. steele Says:

Biggest issue with Goedeke is injury risk.

  17. D-Rok Says:

    GOB,
I’d rather have a team that is consistent, either run or pass, preferably both. As you alluded to, imposing your will against each week’s defense, machine-like, certainly strikes fear into opponents. Who you gonna be more scared about: A team that can (possibly) score a 60-yard TD bomb once or twice a game, or a team who can always grind out 6-7 yards, methodically matriculating down the field? I’ll take the latter, thank you very much. Let’s matriculate, shall we? LOL

  18. Maniac Buc Says:

I have 100% faith in Smith and Wirfs, Mason and Goedeke will probably be great, but until we get a center who can actually block, we still won’t be able to run up the middle.

  19. DoooshLaRue Says:

If only we could get Ol’ Gummy 93 back, then we would absolutely terrorize all the other teams!

    #softferocity

  20. Brandon Says:

So Ryan Jenson can’t block, Maniac? 🤔 that’s a stupid assertion.

  21. kevbeth5 Says:

Holy smokes Ryan Jensen cant block ???? Next thing you know you’ll say Tom Brady can’t throw. Lmaoooo. That was funny

  22. SB Says:

I think Marine Buc was being facetious.

  23. GOB Says:

Feacaltious, definition: spreading bull*+$#, twisting the original meaning, being a Dbag. see, disingenuous

  24. Buczilla Says:

I can’t wait to see this guy play.

  25. BillyBucco Says:

Jensen is one of the nastiest centers in the league and great at run blocking.
Where did that post come from?

White will be an excellent change of pace back.
Gronk will have it made when he returns.

Way less blocking needed from him or Brate.

  26. GOB Says:

Bubblegum, rainbows, cotton candy, what could go wrong!?!?

  27. DoooshLaRue Says:

    ^^^^^
    Unicorns.

    Unicorns could go wrong.
    😀

  28. Buc4evr Says:

Goedeke’s controlled rage comment reminds me that everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. Welcome to the NFL rookie.

  29. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Sounds like Bobby Boucher. Maybe the defenses will try to talk smack about his momma.
