Todd Bowles Hints That Logan Ryan Will Play Nickel

Todd Bowles talks defense

Joe is taking a breather from all the pomp and circumstance and drama of the last couple of weeks to think about real football.

That’s what Todd Bowles was talking about this morning.

The new Buccaneers head coach still will call the defensive plays and he’s eager to look at his new toy. But how will he use him?

Bowles had plenty to say about veteran safety/cornerback Logan Ryan, the new arrival after Jordan Whitehead bolted for big money with the New York Jets last month.

“Just off the tape, he does show the versatility of being a nickel and a safety,” Bowles said of Ryan on WDAE Radio. “I think him and Jordan are completely different players. I don’t compare the two. I know Ryan brings a lot of intelligence to us and a lot of experience to us. I would like to see him in practice and move around and see how exactly I could use him and would use him. But I know he’s not the same type of player as Jordan; He’s not even brought in to replace Jordan, sort of speak. So he still has to come in and move around and let me see where he can fit in and work those kinks out. And I think we’ll work them out as we get into the spring and the summer. But I know he’s a sharp player and a very sharp guy.”

Joe sort of hopes Ryan proves to be versatile and looks like a great fit at nickel. It would be interesting to see fierce competition at cornerback.

Seems like everybody in the secondary plays nickel at some point…..I guess you can never have enough nickels…..

I like hearing this guy can blitz…..maybe he’ll be more effective than the others before him.

  2. ModHairKen Says:

    Five nickels equals a quarter.

  3. GOB Says:

Base defense is essentially dead. Teams will be playing from behind against Tampa, and you can’t run on them. It all adds up to lots of playing time for Logan

  4. Defense Rules Says:

The best offense in the league can’t do much sitting on the bench. Bucs’ defense has to get better at getting off the field on 3rd downs, and especially on the 3rd-and-longs. Not much danger anyone’s gonna run in those situations, but for some reason we’ve seemed to be very susceptible in those passing situations. Got a hunch that’s where Logan will prove to be worth hisweight in gold.

  5. PassingThru Says:

Logan Ryan would be a good fit in nickel and dime defensive packages.

  6. GOB Says:

Not blitzing and playing coverage on third and long would go a long way.

  7. GOB Says:

50.. 50…43. that was bucs blitz percentage on first, second and third down respectively. 43% is far too high a percentage on third down. Bowles isn’t changing his stripes, so it’s simple. Without better secondary play, it’ll look alot like it did last year.

  8. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

Look forward to see Logan Ryan get in the mix in our secondary
    We’re good on the outside 24 35
Todd B take us to the promise land
    Go Bucs

  9. TJ Says:

Translation: “Ryan is not as athletic & physical as Whitehead but hopefully his mental awareness and veteran savvy will make up the difference…we won’t know for sure until the pads go on”

  10. orlbucfan Says:

Hope Whitehead doesn’t regret going to that disaster zone. But, ME13 and CG14 are playing together again, plus LVD looks like he’s gonna retire a Buc. I am a Bowles’ fan so I trust his judgement. Now, what’s up with Richard Sherman?

  11. Ash Says:

Finally I was hoping he wouldnt be played at safety and instead replace smb at the nickle slot corner position heck yes.

  12. Maniac Buc Says:

This was Bowles way of Saying his son in law will be the actual safety

  13. Aaron Says:

    So,

Logan = Smart and experienced with questionable athletic skills

    Jordan = very athletic

    Got it.

  14. 813bucboi Says:

    Bye Ross

    GO BUCS

  15. Bucsfan4ever Says:

I think Sherman is coaching now

  16. Drew Says:

I’d settle for a Million Bucs.

  17. Alanbucsfan Says:

    DR-
but for some reason we’ve seemed to be very susceptible in those passing situations.
JPP was injured and ineffective most of year

  18. Hodad Says:

Sounds like he’s replacing SMB, and rightfully so.

  19. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

    If I had a nickel for every . . . . . . . . . . .

  20. Que5 Says:

Honey Badger will be Bucs safety and Ryan will be CB

  21. Craig Says:

I thought Mike Edwards was more than good enough to play nickel, but I guess, that with Ryan you can actually change things pre-snap and have them work.

Bucs D-backfield needs to confuse opposing QBs more often. I had hopes for that early last season, but they ended up with a warm body defense that couldn’t cover and chew gum at the same time.

Maybe this year they can make some bait and switch work, as long as SMB can keep his mind in the game.

  22. Buczilla Says:

Logan is a nice addition, but hopefully we draft another corner in round one or two to compete with Dean.

  23. Jordan Says:

Really liked this signing, beginning of season was brutal when we had injuries in the secondary.

Dean and SMB have both been basically handed jobs, never truly had to compete with anyone. This should light a fire under SMB even further as he’s in a contract year.

SMB was a huge difference maker in our SB run, but he has been pretty average besides that.

Having a guy that gives us depth at both corner and safety is huge, we’re no longer just one predictable injury away from a sketchy backend. I would still draft a corner myself though if one fell right into my lap, otherwise I’d focus on trenches.

  24. Listnfrmafar Says:

Watched the Bucs/Dallas game on NFL station last night, sit Dean play Ryan at CB. It looked like Dallas was using Dean as a practice squad player to perfect their plays. He’s not good.

  25. tampabayallday Says:

he’ll play slot corner, we either draft a safety early like lewis cine or we sign a vet like honey badger

  26. bucsfanfromNE Says:

Logan Ryan is not the 2ND coming of revis ,wasn’t all that great as a patriot,,hopefully eat my words,,just don’t think we should get our hopes up to high on him,,he’s a middle of the pack corner,,better to play him at safety,,

  27. Bucsman90 Says:

    He is taking SMBs spot
