“I Was Going To The Basketball Game”

April 6th, 2022

“Hold up Coach.”

First things first, guys.

Joe has to doff his cap in appreciation to Bucs coach Todd Bowles. The man makes a schedule, he sticks to it.

Joe already offered the highlights of Bowles’ recent interview with Adam Schefter from his podcast. But Joe is bringing you the following because Schefter uploaded a video clip of it Twitter.

Bowles explained how he learned former Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach was stepping down and that Bowles was being named head coach. Bowles had the week off as all Bucs assistants did and on his way back from visiting his son who plays football at Rutgers (yes, for former Bucs commander Greg Schiano), Bowles stopped in Charlotte to inspect a house he owns there.

And Bowles, a huge basketball fan, also had prime tickets to watch the Hornets while in Charlotte.

Arians informed Bowles he was the new Bucs coach and asked when he could get back to Tampa. Bowles told him not before the hoops game.

Joe thinks that is pretty cool that Bowles may have gotten the job of his life but that had to be put on the back burner for a day so he could enjoy a hoops game.

You can see Bowles explain this to Schefter in the video below.

As long as Todd “Major Payne” Bowles can stop Spider 2, Y Banana we will be in good shape this upcoming season 😂

I’m happy for Bowles and it’s well deserved. Classy move by BA too. Too bad this isn’t what’s getting the attention (it deserves)

    LFG Bucs Bayyyy Beeee!

  2. William Walls Says:

    ^^^^ THIS!!!^^^^^

What by all rights should be getting trumpeted as one of the classiest moves in NFL coaching history is being stepped on by click-bait stories alleging the full-on opposite. Shameful reporting out there. Shameful.

  3. DarenGibo Says:

I really do believe that if Tom doesn’t “retire” at end of last season, that Arians DOES and he passes baton to Bowles. If that happened, none of this controversy would be stirred up.. I just feel he is loyal and has always wanted the best for his coaching staff. leaving Bowles with Gabbert/Trask/Griffith may be a nice sounding law firm, but it is not setting the table for success as it is with TB12.

  4. Allbuccedup Says:

I am glad Licht is still here because when Brady retires the quarterback issue will be two people decision and not just Bowles. Look what happened in Washington with Ron Rivera trade for overpaid Wentz.

  5. Allbuccedup Says:

I guess the job wasn’t that important to him.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Good for Todd…..at least you’re not a total a$$ kisser….

  7. Deep sigh Says:

He hadnt looked at any offensive players in the draft when he got the news but prioritized a game… You bucs fans love giving Brady an uphill battle.

  8. ben Says:

Mr. Bowles screwed up BIG time on the Rams game so hoping he learned from his mistakes .

  9. Dooley Says:

Getting promoted on your day off is the flipside of Craig getting fired on his day off lol

  10. Mackey Says:

Not sure why, but I have the feeling the Bucs will have a Lovie Smith style season for 2022.

    NBA basketball??? They still playing??

  13. Navfree17 Says:

Deep sigh: is it the DC job to scout offensive players in the draft?! 🤡

  14. Listnfrmafar Says:

Why are the Rams courting Honey Badger? What are the Bucs doing about D?

  15. Bucsfan4ever Says:

Yeah, except now they play the Chinese national anthem:
it’s titled “Brown spots on wall” by famous Chinese composer Maestro Hoo Fling Poo.

  16. David Says:

I’m really sick of everyone complaining about that call Bowles made in the Rams game. I disagree with it, but I see the logic.
No one was going to expect it. They were going to expect basically a prevent D. If they ran it correctly, executed, they could have sacked Stafford or forced a bad throw. It was a ballsy call.

Instead it wasn’t communicated correctly and not everyone did their assignment.
Most importantly, as much as I love Winfield, he basically stands there 15 yards downfield and watches Cooper Kupp run by him. Then he turns and run but it’s too late. So for everything that went wrong on that play, it all could’ve been prevented if Winfield did his job.

The clip shows Todd seemed genuinely surprised he was retiring and getting the offer. While I like Bowles over BA purely because I think he won’t fight with Tom and will work hard. But he wasn’t nearly the best HC candidate available in 2021. He wasn’t hired by any teams, and BA was actively encouraging BL and Todd to get HC jobs and leave elsewhere a 2 months ago. What if they got jobs and Brady returned etc was he going to give the job to a special teams coach with no interview or hiring process?

But if BA wanted to retire why wouldn’t the team want to hire one of the top coaches in the league to replace BA. If BA retired a few weeks after the playoff game Tampa could have signed Josh McDaniels(Brady’s Best Friend and the best OC for the last 10y in the NFL), or traded a 1st for Sean Payton(Brady wanted to work with him) and he’s a HOF coach best offensive mind in NFL the past 15y, or someone from the McVay tree or Reed tree or Shanohan tree. To work with Brady and Tampa in 2022 may have even be able to get the other top OCs in NFL as coaches whom never expressed interest as most teams were bad who
whom very hiring. Coaches would be fighting to get the Tampa position even if Brady retired and they signed a good Vet QB. But instead it was handed off without any competition interviews or GM talks for even BL or other African American coaches whom could apply or the top White coaches in the NFL to even try and pitch what they can do.

When was the last time a coach voluntarily left to pass a job to a internal DC/OC for a immediate long term deal with no interviews or hiring process for others.
