The New Look Bucs

March 10th, 2022

Bucs GM Jason Licht

This will make Bucs fans wince and Joe isn’t on board with this at all.

But ya’ gotta do what ya’ gotta do when it comes to the salary cap.

It is very possible 2022 will be the offseason of change for Tampa Bay. Barring Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht re-signing a bunch of guys in the next few days, a look at the opening-day offense might be enough for someone to reach for the Bromosas and start chugging.

BSPN statsheeter Mike Clay gives Bucs fans a sneak peek below.

It seems Clay is not paying any attention to what Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians was saying as he spent much of a day last week hyping Blaine Gabbert as his new starting quarterback — unless Clay thinks Arians was laying it on too thick. Other than that, Clay might be dead-on correct.

The interior of the offensive line could be three new starters.

Joe hates to be repetitive, but if Ryan Jensen walks out the front door of One Buc Palace on the heels of Ali Marpet retiring, any scant hopes of Tom Brady returning this year go right out the door with Jensen. That’s all there is to it.

Finally – someone who is being realistic regarding the Bucs current roster/cap situation…

I’m so sick of hearing from the idiotic talking heads at ESPN (Walt Disney) repeating the same old uninformed lies – “The Bucs have a Super Bowl ready roster”…

You lazy ill informed morons… Stop being lazy knuckleheads and do just 10 minutes of research.

  2. gbobucsfan Says:

I guess not counting Godwin cause of injury? Still pretty damn scary.

  3. SB~LV Says:

    Derrick’s
    “Sharp stick in the eye”

  4. sasquatch Says:

Tom Brady is not coming back. Just stop.

  5. EricTheViking Says:

Seems our GM is a little Licht in the loafers. TB12 was the reason we won, nothing else. They were hot garbage before, and look to be used TP afterwards. It’s a Bucs life.

  6. Robert Says:

    LOL

    I been sayin it.

Unless Trask lights it up they’ll go from SB contenders to 1st round draft pick next year.

and yeah, I think they should gamble with Trask

  7. Mike Says:

If we have to rebuild, so be it. We had our run and we got a Super Bowl out of it. I’m not complaining.

  8. sasquatch Says:

The pessimism is a little thick with Bucs fans. Losing Brady is a huge blow, as was losing Marpet. Davis will probably walk. We won’t be 13-4 this year… but jeezus, doesn’t anybody recognize that it’s still a good organization and Arians had a positive impact even before Brady. We still have as good a chance to win the NFC South as anyone. And having to restock your team after losing guys is a fun process to watch. Why are some of you such little b!tches?

  9. Posey99 Says:

I actually like this roster. I think we will grab one of the guards in the 1st there’s some good oline guys in this draft. Cappa coming back would be nice and hainsey is underrated and has been working with Trask. A TE other then Brate we would need as well. Gronk if he comes cheap, really don’t think Buffalo is needs Gronk because they already have a young stud TE

  10. HC Grover Says:

This sounds like we are now scraping the bottom of the barrel. I have low expectations for the Bucconeers this year. We are as broke as the US Treasury and no money tree to shake.

  11. tampabuscsbro Says:

To be fair Marine Buc, Joe was saying for months the buccaneers can still make a super bowl run. I have no idea why he thought that was possible without brady even if we snagged another top level QB.

  12. tampabuscsbro Says:

Also I refuse to believe Brady unretires to play this season. The only people that mention it are talking heads and outright hacks like Peter King and Mike Florio who if I mention what I think of Florio I would get banned from the comment section.

  13. catcard202 Says:

We all knew the reality of what would occur the moment TB1 was gone…Checks just coming due….It is what it is.

    Let the rebuild begin!

  14. Pewter Power Says:

Idiot of course it does before free agency and the draft. Bucs draft starters every year and every team fills holes in free agency. This is just to dumb for any fan to look at and panic over a week before free agency. Never know who might restructure to create cap space and Brady contract will still be fixed to create space

  15. Slacknuts Says:

Everyone should have known this was coming after the quick run with Brady. The experiment paid off with a ring and no back to mediocrity at best

  16. Buczilla Says:

Hitting rock bottom for a couple of years and building up the roster is far better than languishing in mediocrity year after year like the Vikings. Rebuild, retool, blow it up, whatever, it’s better to rip off the bandaid now while our super bowl win is still fresh in our heads.

  17. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

Might as well go with Trask and aim for the first pick of the 2023 draft. Great QB talent will be available in that draft. Go Bucs!

Might as well go with Trask and aim for the first pick of the 2023 draft. Great QB talent will be available in that draft. Go Bucs!

We are not going for the first pick in the draft! Get a phouecking grip dude. Even if we lose Davis and Jensen, this is still far too talented a team, even without a franchise QB, to finish below middle of the pack. I mean, the pessimism around here is ridiculous. It’s like Brady Retirement Trauma Disorder… The sky is not falling.

  19. DEEEMO Says:

Hey we had a good run for the past 2 years. I was never a huge Brady fan when he was with N.E. Pats cut he did bring a Super Bowl hear. Bad to a build mode and that could work out well because the NFC South is not very strong this year. I have faith in the front office that they can Draft some good players. Plus it is early , Free Agency is not even here yet. Ya’All need to chill a bit and lets see what the next couple of months bring!

  20. Duane Says:

Too hard to speculate because the current cap numbers look bad, but are surely in flux. What I noticed is that Jun 1 is a day where the most cap space is clearable. Considering GB is $50 over the cap for the frontrunner’s salary, they can likely sign who they want, the figure the financing later. Im not a cap guy, and honestly have no interest in learning how the magic works, but I can recognize that there are a handful of players at the $16+ million mark that can and will be reworked. This team is not rebuilding. I think make more financially sound decisions on who they bring in this season.

  21. Marques Says:

    In Trask I Trust

  22. Rod Munch Says:

Brady is not coming back – I can’t believe grown adults actually think if the Bucs resign some old guys, suddenly Brady will change his mind. If that’s all Brady’s retirement was about, then I can assure you, Licht would have given him that without the fake drama of a retirement.

Brady quit because of his nagging wife, and unless you see him move in with a 22-year super model in the next few weeks, he’s done.

    Move on already.

You don’t resign Jensen and a bunch of old guys when you don’t have a legit NFL QB. Tanking w/ Trask is the route you go unless you can get Watson, maybe Winston. Otherwise, let everyone walk, get all the comp picks, go 3-14, clean up the cap, be ready to compete for real in 2023.

  23. DEEEMO Says:

Hey we had a good run for the past 2 years. I was never a huge Brady fan when he was with the N.E. Pats but he did bring a Super Bowl here as well as change the culture. But with that said, the need to have a rebuild mode, and coming this year, it could work out well because the NFC South is not very strong this year. I have faith in the front office that they can Draft some good players. Plus it is early , Free Agency is not even here yet. Ya’All need to chill a bit and lets see what the next couple of months bring!

  24. T REX Says:

    The sky fell

    The whole team was Brady.

    Incoming reality blast next year.

    People in denial.

  25. Cobraboy Says:

Casuals are in total denial that the cap can was not kicked down the road, and at some point would come due.

That at some point Brady would retire (or throw a tantrum), old guys get old, and cap repair would be necessary.

So casuals now think that the genius of Licht keeping the band together, is now Licht is an idiot.

Only an idiot would think this day never comes.

I, for one, look forward to the Buc future.

  26. sasquatch Says:

Seriously, people need to get over Brady. Yeah, you dated for awhile, but you can’t cry yourself to sleep every night hoping he comes back. Time to move on. It’s a new team with familiar faces, that’s it. It’s not rebuilding, but it is restocking and finding a new identity… but building something new is a really exciting time. Stop being babies.

  27. BucsFan81 Says:

We going to suck again that’s reality. The last 2 years was a dream. We will all talk about it over the next decade of losing. Going remember those 2 years when we had Tom Brady and we won a Super Bowl and a Division title lol

  28. Jerry Says:

I’d rather struggle with Trask than struggle with Gabbert or Bridgewater. You got to play young guys to know what you got. Gabbert and Bridgewater have hit their ceilings. We know what they can do already.

If Trask has no role in the future, why was he drafted?

  29. Allbuccedup Says:

Titans just released pro bowl left guard roger saffold hes 33 he made 10 mil last year. Licht should try to get him for a two year 15 mil. That would less than than marpets salary.

  30. sasquatch Says:

    BucsFan81 Says:

We going to suck again that’s reality.

That’s actually a prediction you’re making, not reality. It may or may not turn out to be true. Reality is we don’t know, we don’t have a QB, and we have some challenges to get through. Regardless, there’s no good reason they should suck. There’s still too much talent.

  31. Just Saying Says:

That looks like an accurate Bucs offensive line up if you ask me.

  32. Patrick Cook Says:

    Go Bucs! Get better defensively.

  33. SlyPirate Says:

Not seeing the schedule, you could reasonably predict 5-12 with the current team.

The Bucs had their two-year window. It’s time to reload.

Which makes the Godwin tag all that more mindboggling?

  34. ItzOK Says:

Just tank there is no hope. Trade Evans & Godwin. Cut La Vonte so he can play somewhere that has a chance to win. let the other free agents all go. Lets win 2 games and get next years number 1. Fck it Brady’s never coming back to this dumpster fire. Wake me up in 20 years when we are relevant again

  35. Aceofaerospace Says:

It “might” suck for a couple years, but who among you wouldn’t do the exact same thing for another ring. I know I would. Ask Detroit, Jacksonville and any team that never made it to the super bowl if they would.

  36. Biff Barker Says:

Cobra, when you are so close to repeating and you have TB under center, you go for it. All in.

Fans who blame Licht for our current situation are just ignorant.

Glad Jason kept his foot on the gas. Realistic fans are happy we swung for fences.

Now we just resume normal Buccaneer programming.

  37. BUCman Says:

Jeezzzzz! Let’s wait until free agency and the draft are completed before making any roster judgements. At this stage of the game all you see are potential loses and feeling defeated. Let it play out. Have a little faith in Jason Licht!

  38. Arealbucsfan Says:

What qbs will be available next draft? From what I see so far, only one is worthy of a 1st rd grade. U guys are delusional

  39. JimmyJack Says:

Fans seem to be expecting Braine and Trask under Center this year. Im more then fine with that situation.

The way I see it that gives us 2 offseasons to get our roster ready to contend. Its not a rebuild to me its a bridge season.

We got dead CAP on(i think) Suh, JPP, Gronk Brady ect. Get all that money paid off this year and theres your salary for a elite QB in 2023.

In a perfect world we see Trask become a ProBowler then all the sudden we got tons of loot to buy an immediate SB run. Im not betting on that but theres plenty to be excited for no matter how much doom you little babies predict.

I will look back at the Brady era fondly and look forward to the future with this staff that turned an error riddled team into Champions in 2 short years………Absolutely no reason to think this staff wont get this team back to contenders.

  40. Defense Rules Says:

Rod Munch … ‘You don’t resign Jensen and a bunch of old guys when you don’t have a legit NFL QB. Tanking w/ Trask is the route you go unless you can get Watson, maybe Winston. Otherwise, let everyone walk, get all the comp picks, go 3-14, clean up the cap, be ready to compete for real in 2023.’

Your whole argument is based on the ASSUMPTION that Trask won’t become a viable starting QB. Ironically I don’t disagree with PART of your argument (get comp picks, clean up the CAP, be ready to compete in 2023), BUT … I’m not nearly as pessimistic about 2022 (YET) as you are. Until FA and the draft are over, and we get a chance to see what we’ve got in Trask AND the TEAM that surrounds him, there’s no way anyone can make a realistic projection that we’ll go 3-14. Be patient. Let’s see what JL has got up his sleeve, if anything.

  41. steele Says:

Glad to finally see a realist. Go look at that Mike Clay post again. That is the foundation of what we’re looking at on offense. We also need the Mike Clay post on the defense. ??? on many positions as well.

It really could go in any direction from here.

  42. Arealbucsfan Says:

I don’t understand all this Trask hate. TKras talkin bout “we can win the division with Teddy B” I’d rather go with Trask! Find out what the hell we spent a 2nd rounder on

  43. Arealbucsfan Says:

And this roster is not a super bowl team. Idk what y’all are smokin

  44. Ontario Mike Says:

Lotsa holes and a rookie QB…plus a killer schedule. Thank goodness our NFC South opponents are who they are. Based on what we know today, still a hope to win the division. But a lot can happen between now an$ opening day. Let’s chill out till then shall we!

  45. Dewey Selmon Says:

8-9 might win the division this year. Just get Trask a pass catching RB, screen passes will slow down the rush and give him an outlet on progressions also.

  46. Defense Rules Says:

For those who haven’t found it, SI published a list of their Top 221 FA players yesterday (https://www.si.com/nfl/2022/03/09/nfl-free-agency-best-available-davante-adams-von-miller ).

It was particularly interesting (to me at least) where they ranked the Bucs’ FAs.

    #4 – Chris Godwin
    #10 – Rob Gronkowski
    #11 – Ryan Jensen
    #12 – Carlton Davis
    #50 – Alex Cappa
    #51 – Jordan Whitehead
    #86 – JPP
    #89 – Leonard Fournette
    #113 – OJ Howard
    #146 – Ndamukong Suh
    #194 – Ronald Jones
    #220 – Blaine Gabbert
    #221 – Antonio Brown

  47. Conte Piscatelli Says:

If we can keep Cappa and Stinnie I feel fine about our oline. Still better than average, with Hainsey at center

  48. Adam's Angry Says:

The Bucs are prepping us to get ready for a 4-13 rebuild season. That’s why they sent a game to Germany – they figured no one will be coming to the games by that point in the season.

  49. Anonymous Says:

    Suckage incoming

  50. Posey99 Says:

Everybody wants the other teams players. We have stars on this roster. Homegrown is the best way to be lasting contenders. Saying we will suck is wild speculation at best. Never seen a bunch of grown men so soft about losing Brady. It’s sad and it’s story after story after complaining. Let the guy retire in peace.

  51. Craig Says:

At least the Bucs have 7 draft picks this year. In a year or two we will be on the rise, with Trask, and the Rams will really be in bad shape.

It is time to build a quality team around Trask, and pray. That is all that can be afforded, maybe Drew Stanton holding the clipboard.

I still have faith that Trask will make it. He has an accurate ball and decent touch, if he doesn’t revert to happy feet, he will be fine, if the team around him is almost whole.

  52. HC Grover Says:

We have tohave a team that can sweep the NFCS and win a few of the games on our difficult schedule out side our division.

  53. Slacknuts Says:

    Get Marlon Mack!

  54. Winny Testaverde Says:

NFL stands for Not For Long ( unless you have The Brady & Belichick combo ). Denver is now the “it” team after stinking up the joint for the last six years following their 2015 SB title. They were positioned with draft capital and cap space and struck a deal. That’s why Brady for no picks and 25 million per year was amazing. Only because he was 43 at the time and the 49ers took a regrettable pass on him.

Wouldn’t be surprised if BA “failed” his physical and/or had a Fred Sanford/Jeff Tedford like “heart attack”. Time for a full on reset. If you’re gonna suck…may as well suck out loud.

  55. Winny Testaverde Says:

Licht…like the fan base…looks dumbfounded in this pic. Wha’ just happened?!

  56. gp Says:

Every * single * year, Every * single * team in the NFL has player turnover. (with very rare exceptions, see Bucs 2021)
    Get a grip people!
It’s amazing just how spoiled you people have become after two years with Brady! Did you really believe he was going to play till he was fifty?!?

We won a Super Bowl and then went all in to keep everyone together for a second run at it. Still think we kinda got robbed in the play-offs, but that’s just me.
Just like every other team, it’s that time of year that we need to look to and for the youth to step up and take the reins for the future.

IT’S THE NATURAL ORDER OF THINGS!!!!!

  57. Todd Says:

    Relax. We got this.

  58. HC Grover Says:

    Mack heads to Chargers

  59. Niles Says:

Man, the only question I have is “Hey Rod Munch, how many FSU jerseys do you have”? Your hatred of Trask is not based on any evidence – you never offer any – and can be based only on subjective bias. Fans like you suck.

  60. Eric Says:

kinda like our previous super bowl. Aging team. Gave up four high picks for Gru. Went all in.

    Now we pay the piper.

  61. JimmyJack Says:

    Gp agreed. Posey agreed.

To go through a great little stretch in franchise history and come out of the other end slobbering and crying like babies is downright shameful.

Already several fans proclaim their done supporting. Alls i can say is i hope they brought there sons or nephews or friends, whatever to the games with………Maybe then we scored a die hard fan out of the deal.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  62. Rod Munch Says:

    Defense Rules Says:
Your whole argument is based on the ASSUMPTION that Trask won’t become a viable starting QB.

    ————-

Well if I’m wrong, then fantastic, you got a QB and you still get all the picks and the clean cap space. If that happens – then feel free to shove that back into my face like do when I bring up that you thought Chris Conte and Ryan Smith were good players.

But I’m being serious – I don’t want the Bucs to suck and waste draft picks on guys, but the team needs to be realistic. Trask, going from #4 to #1, is likely going to be a disaster. He barely got any practice time last year and they’re having to retrain him on how to throw the ball. I just don’t see that going well – but if I’m wrong, I’ll be really happy about it. I have nothing against Trask, I’d love for him to do well and give the Bucs a huge cap advantage for a couple of years. BUT, in order to get that huge cap advantage, you can’t resign a bunch of old guys. We don’t want to take a one-year rebuild and turn it into a 3 or 4-year rebuild.

  63. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

There was a time when I stressed over this team…but then I realized that could only end up giving me a heart attack. So now I have learned to not stress out.

Brady was the difference – maker…because all we needed to be great was a good QB.

We still have those same nuts and bolts…with the exception of a few players.

The cap situation is not as bad as everyone thinks.

  64. Show Me the TDs Says:

“Joe hates to be repetitive”. Hahahaha
