Rather Than Blaine Gabbert…
March 7th, 2022Outside of Blaine Gabbert’s family, his agent and perhaps Gabbert himself, you will be lucky to find six people walking the face of the earth who didn’t shake their heads in disbelief last week listening to Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians hype Gabbert as Tom Brady’s successor.
Nicolas McGee of the 33rd Team seems to think the Gabbert chatter is a smokescreen. He sort of understands what Arians is trying to do, but McGee believes Arians is choosing the wrong quarterback.
Instead, McGee thinks Mitch Trubisky is the guy who should succeed Brady and not Gabbert.
The Bucs’ most feasible path to staying competitive is not to parachute in a superstar quarterback at a high price. It is to build the team around a more affordable signal-caller who fits what Arians wants to do on offense.
If the Bucs go down that route, then the names are unlikely to be ones to inspire. There may be debate over whether Mitchell Trubisky deserves another shot to start in the NFL, yet there is no doubt he has the arm to thrive in an Arians’ attack, with his athletic ability bringing potential added upside to the offense.
Joe didn’t see enough of Trubisky — unless he was carving up Mike Smith’s defense like a Thanksgiving turkey straight out of the oven — to know whether Trubisky is a classic Arians dropback quarterback. Joe thought Trubisky was more of an athletic, runaround quarterback than an old school statue.
McGee also threw out the name Gardner Minshew, which makes Joe want to throw up. Now that’s just trolling, if the Bucs sign this guy to make a playoff run, that’s all there is to it. That’s a Lovie stunt! Plus, he’s not available and the Eagles love him as their backup — because he is a backup.
You Kyle Trask people, if the Bucs bring this stiff Minshew in, and he is anointed as the starting quarterback, you have every reason to yell and holler and throw things and cuss out your bartender (after he pours you a Big Storm Brewing beer, of course). Trask would be getting shafted.
What is it with people who get all stiff for a stiff quarterback with facial hair?

Just to put things in prospective if you remember that day in Chicago, after the gamr Trubisky was the next big young Qb that becomes a star and Matt Nagy was the new genius coaching mind on offense.
What the last 2 years taught us is you must have a good Qb if you want to compete. We cant find another Brady but you must try to find a good Qb. Dont think Trubisky, Minshew, Teddy B or Trask are the answer.
Nfl has changed, draft picks are not what they used to be (dont carry the same value) teams are going for it. You have to go all in and try to get a good Qb, if you cant find any then iit is time to rebuild. No point to be in the middle

mitch blowfitzky is not very good…
sure he had career games vs us once or maybe even twice if i’m correct…
but against the rest of the league he was straight outta scrub city

This is a year of chance and hope for the Bucs — which equals taking chances.
See if Trask is the future or just a backup. See if your past draft picks can start or are backups (JTS, Hainsey, Stinnie). Replace some old FAs with young blood through FA and the draft (JPP, Gholston, Davis III). Attempt to sign the FAs you know others want prior to FA beginning (Godwin, Jensen, Gronk, Cappa, Whitehead). Take a chance and hold off on those less likely to be in demand until just prior to the draft (Suh, JPP, Gholston?). Realize you are probably going to lose a few FAs you want to keep and plan accordingly (Gronk, Jensen, Fournette).
Usually I’m excited to see who the Bucs will add at this time of the year. Now, I’m concerned to see who they may lose. I hope there are a lot re-signings at One Buc Place over the next 8 days.

Got a feeling that most (maybe even all) of our own guys will ‘test the FA waters’ as opposed to re-sign right off the bat. Most have some pretty good credentials, and there seem to be a number of teams who think they’re close & just need to add a few pieces to compete for the SB. Some of them actually have money to spend & will be willing to overpay to get their guy. Bucs can’t do that.
At the same time though, I think that JL will target certain positions to get them filled quickly. Signing Gabbert & 1 other QB (whoever that might be) quickly will probably be a high priority. So will re-signing at least one of our OLinemen (we’ve got far too many holes there right now). I’m also putting my money on re-signing Will Gholston (his re-signing should be easy IF we make him a reasonably fair offer). Other than those though, got a hunch this’ll be a long- drawn-out process.

Mitch would be a good signing if we have an open QB competition, certainly better than Bridgewater. But if he’s the guy we’ll be lucky to win a playoff game

Bucs Guy Says:
“Replace some old FAs with young blood through FA and the draft (JPP, Gholston, Davis III).”

Carleton Davis III is only 25 years old and coming off of his rookie contract.

Have to agree with Joe on Minshew. It’s like not even trying, IMO.
Trubisky was drafted waaaaaaaay too high. There was no way he could live up to those expectations. I’m not as down on him as others but, only as competition if we’re moving forward with Trask.
March 7th, 2022 at 7:00 am
Trubisky was drafted to high but he’s much better than Gabbert. I would rather go with Trask and if he sucks, at least you get a chance at next years QB draft class. Being 8-9 or 9-8 is the worst place to be when you want to improve your QB situation.
March 7th, 2022 at 7:04 am
Close to the last 4 games of this season, the headlines will be, rather than Bruce Arrogance.
March 7th, 2022 at 7:05 am
Make that seven people Joe. I’ve been saying on this site since Brady retired Gabbert would be our starting QB. Why I’ve been saying it is because circumstance dictates it. Arains is not going to waste his time teaching Mitch his offense. We’re going to hit the ground running for better, or worse with Gabby, and Trask. Just when I thought you’ve come around, you bring up another fools ramblings.
March 7th, 2022 at 7:05 am
Gabbert or Trubisky? give me Gabbert. Knows the offense, more experience and engulfed in the team culture….and cheaper.
March 7th, 2022 at 7:21 am
I dont see how we can have a clear estimate of what Trask can do–he didn’t get reps in practice, just ran the scout team now and again. He’s no more prepared to be our QB NOW than he was when we drafted him
March 7th, 2022 at 7:38 am
Are we really gonna be that quick to dismiss Minshew? Dude is 5969-41-12 in 22 games, mostly with a terrible Jaguars team. I’m not saying he’s the slam dunk guy, but I’d bring him in for a look.
March 7th, 2022 at 7:48 am
So interesting perspective to me is that Trubisky did better in Chicago than Justin Fields did last year.
There seemed to be a lot of Justin Fields fans here in the last year that put all the blame on how bad Matt Nagy and his offensive coordinators were not on Fields.
If that is indeed the case (that the Chicago offensive coaches were that bad), isn’t Trubisky a valid quarterback consideration for us.
March 7th, 2022 at 8:08 am
I’m with some of the other posters here in weeks past. Joe, you seem (as in coming across) to be against Trask for some reason. Not saying that’s how you feel but it’s certainly how you’re coming across.
Mitch Trubisky is trash. He made a pro bowl on the strength on a single game where he threw 6 TDs against the Bucs. We all know what kind of player Blaine Gabbert. If our choices are going to be Gabbert and Trubisky I’d much rather roll with Trask.
March 7th, 2022 at 9:13 am
I would be intrigued if we signed Trubisky. He has a much better track record than Gabbert. At the very least, he would be relatively cheap and he is still young. If Arian’s is such a quarterback guru, I would be curious to see what he could do with Trubisky. I took my son to that 2018 Chicago game as part of a father and son weekend. We flew in on Saturday, caught a Cubs game, and then watched the Bucs get creamed on Sunday. Trunisky had a career day! At half time, I told my son that Winston would start the second half and throw an interception. I was right. By the way, the Bears fans were cordial and good winners. I can’t say the same thing about Giants fans.

Gardner Minschew with his Moustache will make a good Pirate for Gasparilla, LOL
Seriously, I would like to see Trask this year vs Gabbert.
March 7th, 2022 at 9:15 am
Go get Mariota and let him compete with Trask. Best man starts.
March 7th, 2022 at 9:17 am
Trask did not even suit up last year. Nobody knows including myself what he can do. You can not just go into camp as him being the QB1.
March 7th, 2022 at 9:21 am
At this point hire Tebow just fer fun.
March 7th, 2022 at 9:37 am
Trubisky had the worst OL and supporting cast of any QB in the last decade as a young QB. It truly was sabotage in Chicago for this guy, very impressive arm talent and he can move. Trask doesn’t have the arm for the Arians route tree, 44 year old Brady could smoke this young Trask testing arm strength. A 44 year old QB should be wiser and be more accurate. But a 44 year old shouldn’t be able to blow away a young QB in arm strength. Trubisky has the zip for these intermediate routes in this offense.

Where is the “Beard” at ?

“Trask did not even suit up last year. Nobody knows including myself what he can do. You can not just go into camp as him being the QB1.“
Nailed it 100%. Really blows my mind to the see amount of fans out there clamoring for an unknown to start right away. Sign a Vet who actually has starting experience. Preferably anyone not named Trubisky
March 7th, 2022 at 10:27 am
@ CChead
“Trask did not even suit up last year. Nobody knows including myself what he can do.”
Exactly – this is why I am trusting BA/BL/JL to make the determination who will be the Bucs starting QB next season.
None of us know more about Kyle Trask than those three guys.
If Trask ends up being our starter than he is the best option available. If Gabbert starts over Trask (IMO) that does not bode well for Trask and we will be looking for a true starting QB in 2023…
March 7th, 2022 at 10:28 am
Trubisky scares me when under pressure, but then so does Gabbert as well as most average QBs.
If the Bucs can keep their offensive line pretty solid, an above average quarterback could be as much as they need. But a lot of that depends on how much they retain and improve the defense as well
March 7th, 2022 at 11:16 am
From one bad QB to another.
Meanwhile there’s a guy named Winston who literally threw of 5k in this offense, over 30 TDs, set every offensive team record pre-GOAT.
March 7th, 2022 at 11:38 am
All the QB BS is just that. My hope is that this is all a ploy to get TB12 back in the house Licht built. Remember all the “You’re going with that guy” propaganda? Perhaps they are trying to smoke out Brady by stating we can replace him with hot garbage. Otherwise, we’ve really gone of the deep end. LFG!!!
March 7th, 2022 at 12:02 pm
I’m a Kyle Trask person with the caveat that we draft a rookie to compete with him as well as a vet with a pulse. Gabbert and Mitchell are the walking dead of qb’s and I want nothing to do with them unless our number one goal this year is to get the number one pick in 2023.
March 7th, 2022 at 12:08 pm
Funny how fortunes change in this NFl.. Our last 2 yrs were ones of being confident and braggin. A full service buffet line with al of the trimmings. Now, we are facing the, Keep it moving, be satisfied with whats on your plate….. soup line.
March 7th, 2022 at 12:51 pm
Fun fact:
Out of every QB in NFL HISTORY since the merger to start over 50 games, Mitchell Trubisky is the ONLY ONE to have never thrown a pick six. Ever.
I don’t want the guy on the team, just wanted to give Trubisky the same cherry picked spotlight that Joe gives bums like Jimmy G. Let’s make it fair.
Fair? LOL. Pick-sixes is hardly a critical gauge. Joe has written multiple posts that put Trubisky in a good light. –Joe https://www.joebucsfan.com/2022/02/shaun-king-names-three-shown-enough-quarterbacks-for-bucs/

drop back passers are winning super bowls
March 7th, 2022 at 7:27 pm
“You don’t want to leave Garner Minshew with that much time on the clock”……. said no one ever. Tom Selleck is still looking for his “stach”. I cringed at the thought of Gabby as well but Arians does have a point that he’s had a carousel coaching wheel and coordinator for all his career until landing here. At some point I want to trust the people in position that know more than I see. I agree with the thought of letting Trask compete and go. Tag the right guy, transition the right guy for a future higher draft pick if he signs somewhere else and sign the best of our young guys we can.
March 7th, 2022 at 8:55 pm
Frankly, Gabbert is not that much more horrible than the free agent QBs available. Just look at the list. As for Trubiscuit, he is not much of an upgrade over Gabbert.
March 7th, 2022 at 9:02 pm
Living in Chitown,Trubisky is an interesting thought. He never had an oline (I’ve never seen an oline since moving here), but he does not make quick decisions and they are usually poor ones when he does. Nagy’s coaching is as squirrelly as Mitch…all over the place, inconsistent, reaching for what is not there, and over evaluating their skills.
Having said that, Mitch can hurl a ball out of the pocket and is used to running for his life behind a porous oline. I would be interested to see what he can do with a decent line, a couple of stud WRs (ME13 and hopefully Godwin), and an offense that consists of more than rub routes and sideline prayers. Nagy was not very good as a HC, but that is chicken/egg, because Pace was a horrible GM who never drafted for team need and put all of his eggs (and team future) into DL/Mack, hence no OL, WR, TE…you get the picture. Now I’m just rambling, but this thread is played out anyway
