Lenny Love From Shaq Mason

March 25th, 2022

“Your dawg knows his stuff, TB?”

Offensive lineman is an emotional position.

It’s man-on-man combat at all times. So it helps to get a little extra juice from your running back.

Sure, Bucs offensive linemen have wanted to block for the likes of Peyton Barber and Derrick Ward, but it’s a little different mentality when a guy like LeGarrette Blount or Leonard “Lombardi Lenny” Fournette is getting the rock.

New Bucs guard Shaq Mason touched on the added urgency a big-time back like Fournette can bring to the front line.

“Definitely excited to block for him. I think as an offensive lineman you want to block for an explosive back like that who can do whatever at any point in the game, that can make a game-changing play at any moment,” Mason said of Fournette. “As an O-lineman, you want that just ’cause whatever [the] down, he can go to the house. You know what I’m saying? I think that’s definitely a key component.”

For those unaware of Mason’s game, he’s known as a punishing run blocker at right guard during his years with the Belicheats. And while his pass blocking may not be elite, it comes Tom Brady-approved, so Joe is all-in.

Shaq Mason has taken the sting out of losing Cappa & even Marpet……we desperately needed to replace that experience on the Oline….at least in part.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Stinnie & if there is competition from Hainsey for left guard…..at the very least, Hainsey should be able to play tackle in the heavy formation and perhaps be our versatile backup.

Hainsey a third round pick….would be nice to get some production from him.

Since we signed Jensen to three more years I can see the coaches moving Hainsey to LG. He was a tackle in college and can play multiple positions. Stinnie and Hainsey can battle it out.

  3. PSL Bob Says:

I have a feeling our o-line will be just as good this year as it was last year. Draft a quality o-lineman in the 2nd round for depth. I’m sure Licht has a small-school hidden gem already picked out. He’s very good at that.

  4. DRFEELGOOD Says:

Still can’t believe he signed for three years and that Jacksonville just flat out released him. He is such a BEAST!!! Shows what a cancerous culture they had there. All of the free agents singing for three years smells like Brady will play three more. Otherwise, it’s a major coincidence. GO BUCS!

Jensen,Mason, wirfs holding down the right side throw in gronk, I see a hole I can gain 10 yards thru

Hainsey was a guard in high school. Florida boy which i was not aware of. IMG brandenton. He can play guard for sure.
He played every position at notre dame while there although most of work at right tackle. Him and stinnie should battle it out

  7. Bucs Win Says:

He’s an upgrade over Cappa for 2 million less per season . Using this year’s fifth round pick for a starter is a great move. Licht is already the GM of the year. The way they handled the Brady situation was masterful. GO BUCS
Oh yeah, Brady’s teams have won the Super Bowl every other year since 2015.

  8. Marine Buc Says:

Looks like the Bucs are signing OT Fred Johnson. Seems like a solid back up.

Will probably replace J. Wells as our main OT reserve…

  9. Cobraboy Says:

As a shorter OG, his low CoG is a plus in the run game, but he would be at a disadvantage in pass pro against a taller DL.

  10. Cobraboy Says:

    I thought Johnson was a Guard…

  11. Bruce Blahak Says:

Johnsons a guard. Has a few starts. Pretty sure its OL or DL with that #1 pick.

  12. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Cobra

“Per Greg Auman of TheAthletic.com, Tampa Bay sees Johnson as a tackle and someone who can compete for a backup job in training camp.”

  13. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers SIGN Fred Johnson

Hainsey is actually a Pittsburgh guy. Yeah, he played at IMG only because it is a football factory. Not from Florida.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

Hainsey needs bulk and strength to be an effective NFL OL. He has skill.

  16. Goatfarmer Says:

Humph! What would an excllent guard like Shaq Mason know about blocking for running backs? I mean, listen to this nonsense!

“I think as an offensive lineman you want to block for an explosive back like that who can do whatever at any point in the game, that can make a game-changing play at any moment”

He can’t be talking about Fournette, we were assured by a Bucs would-be GM posting here that he’s nothing special.

  17. PassingThru Says:

Shaq Mason is a great fit for Fournette. Mason excels at creating lanes between the OT and C, rather than pulling outside. That aligns with what Fournette does best as a runner.

  18. HC Grover Says:

So run right with Jensen, Mason, Wirfs, Gronk, and Godwin, blocking for Lenny. Sounds good to me.
