Chris Godwin And His Value To Tom Brady

March 20th, 2022

Reliable.

Joe could have sworn that Chris Godwin was setting himself up for a monster payday next year. It’s called betting on yourself.

Prior to the February franchise tag deadline, Godwin didn’t agree with the Bucs on a contract and he was franchised for the second straight year.

Not only was Godwin going to get paid handsomely as a result, the fact it was for the same season as he was coming off knee surgery and possibly missing games to start the season, the franchise tag was a helluva move. And the way receivers are getting paid, if Godwin played well this season, landing a $23 million a year deal next year didn’t seem crazy.

That all changed when Tom Brady came back to the Bucs.

Brady likes Godwin. He banks on Godwin. And aside from a case of the dropsies (after breaking a finger) against Washington in the playoffs in 2020, Godwin has been damn reliable.

How much does Brady lean on Godwin? Consider Godwin against the Dixie Chicks last year caught 15 passes. That was the most a receiver caught in a single game all season.

Factor in all the weapons Brady could have thrown to, and that tells you what he thinks of Godwin. Joe doesn’t think it is a coincidence at all that Godwin signed a three-year pact just shortly after Brady announced his return.

What a fantastic draft pick he was. Now they have him and Gage for years to come hopefully, while Evan’s still has 4 to 5 years left.

  2. Tim Says:

Godwin, Evans and now Gage will be a formidable group. Along with Gronk, if he comes back. This is true, so long as they stay healthy. WR has some depth. TE does not. We would best be served spending a 2 or 3 on the heir apparent at TE. Let Gronk play another year and he and Brate show him the ropes. Likely Gronk and Brate will miss some time to injury, so the new guy WILL see some playing time. TE needs to be a priority.

  3. sasquatch Says:

^^ +1 on the need for a Day 2 pick on TE.

  4. Goatfarmer Says:

But I thought Carlton Davis was overrated and the defense was horrible?

    Oops wrong thread.

But the same people who matter think al ost as highly about CD as they do about Godwin.

Time to clean house at One Buc Place!

  5. adam from ny Says:

yall need to get a look at last seasons gage highlight reel on youtube…

the dude is even nicer than i thought…

i’ve always been super impressed with him every time i saw him on tv, but really i don’t think we will miss AB on the field…

brady sees something in this guy – and he is underrated…

once chris is back up and running, we should have an elite trio again…

and a little boatload of very qualified depth guys

  6. SOEbuc Says:

And Gage looks Godwinlike. I watch his film with Matt Ryan and and ATL and then I think of what he will look like with Brady. Scary.

  7. adam from ny Says:

    @SOEbuc:

a little bit of godwin, but also might i dare say, a little bit of AB too

  8. Goatfarmer Says:

adam – you right on the assessment. Rubbing things in anticipation!

  9. BucsfanChad Says:

I signed Gage as a need for a wr on my fantasy team one week. I started him every week after. He can play, and don’t forget Perriman is back as well. WR is so deep this year.

  10. August 1976 Buc Says:

Godwin is a good receiver, his issue is injuries.
Since BA moved him to the Slot, “Larry Fitzgerald-Hines Ward Role” Godwin has excelled. He is a major cog in the Brady led offensive machine.

But 2 of the last 3 years, Godwin could not finish a season. 2019, 2021.
And barring something catastrophic happening, the Bucs will be in the Post season again in 2022.

Will Godwin be available for the post season? I sure hope so. But Godwins recent history is a concern.

After AB decided to Jumping Jack his way off the team in NY, the Bucs were in a bad spot without Godwin.Thankfully J Licht signed Gage.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  11. sasquatch Says:

Maybe Godwin needs to get on the TB12 program.

  12. Adrnagy Says:

Regardless….franchise tag $19 M or contract its alot of money. Give me $1m-$2m and ill be flying to the most of my brains.

    It comes down to ego.

Maybe Godwin needs to get on the TB12 program. Lololol

lol It sure would not hurt, maybe Brady is already in his ear, lolol.

TB “Hey Chris, we are going to need you to make a postseason run, Maybe you could give Alex G a call”

Whatever it takes, because Godwin is seriously needed to get to the promise land again, and have “Lombardi Boat Parade 2” in Feb 2023

  14. Anonymous Says:

I am of the belief that Brady is going to sign an extension as all these new Bucs contracts are for 3 years, I think Brady plays for one extra year as well.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Anonymous … ‘I think Brady plays for one extra year as well.’

I’ve been thinking the same thing, except I think TB12 makes those decisions year-to-year now based on a number of variables (health, family, drive, etc). He may very well sign an extension, but with caveats galore. Would allow the Bucs to spread out his $20 mil CAP hit, and thus allow us to build a stronger TEAM to help him win another Super Bowl.

Brady is all about winning championships IMO. Going 13-4 is nice, but that’s just a means to an end for Brady; WINNING the Super Bowl is that end. To accomplish that, TB12 KNOWS better than any of us what it takes to win the whole enchilada.

These recent signings have primarily focused on offense, but I have no doubt that eventually the defense will get its fair share of attention to be competitive in a SB run. Convinced now that our draft will be ‘defense-focused’, with an eye towards getting younger up front. But fully expect that JL will bring back some of these vets like Suh & Gholston, and maybe even JPP, to ‘train them up’ properly.

  16. Stanglassman Says:

Godwin is not likely to miss any games. Unless you mean preseason. And speaking of players being ready game 1, I hear that Wirfs would have played in the super bowl had the Bucs made it so he’s going to be perfectly healthy going into the season.

Regarding Godwin and injuries. He comes into camp in shape and takes good care of himself. Injuries happen especially to players that do so much of the dirty work. TB12 no gonna stop him from breaking his fingers. Dude missed one game and played with fresh pins in his hand. No complaints about Godwins toughness or injuries.

The Bucs saw how much easier it is with a solid #3 and lost it when AB lost it. Gage gives them that back. His ceiling looks incredibly high he’s a great pickup. If I was Johnson or Darden I’d be working my butt off this offseason and come in working harder than ever. Grayson could stick around on PS again. Darden maybe safer cause his return ‘abilities’ and only 1 year in.

  17. SufferingSince76 Says:

So what happens to the franchise tag now that Godwin signed? Tag season is over. Deadline has passed. And you can only franchise one player. –Joe

  18. adam from ny Says:

    potential receivers 1-6:

    evans
    godwin
    gage
    perriman
    grayson
    darden?

    in deep doo:

    scotty
    tyler

    also potentially in deep doo:

    darden

  19. adam from ny Says:

    stan:

i think brady kinda trusts grayson these days…they seem to think he made big strides as a receiver since his “doink – off the helmet days”…

scotty is becoming almost obsolete somehow…not sure how this occurred, but it sort of has…

while tyler had a disappointing year and looked totally slow with no separation whatsoever…(cam brate gets more separation lol)

and yeah, darden might get the benefit of the doubt for one more year – but his full season of ridiculousness was quite — ridiculous…can you imagine the kid on a frozen pond?…lol…dude was like surfing on the turf at ray jay…i’ve never seen anything like it 🙂

  20. Listnfrmafar Says:

Please NO Darden, the man plays scared. If Brady was calling Julio, sure wished he had Robert Woods #. He’s a beast, great hands and really,, really good blocker now Tenn has him. I know Tommy loves Chrissy but 15 receptions a game will kill him. Spread it out.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Actually, I think Godwin made the right choice by signing…..you can say IF, IF, IF….all you like about the 23 mil…..but 20 is a sure thing…..

  22. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Draft Olave from Ohio State , don’t get caught short handed at WR again.

  23. Stanglassman Says:

Very Doubtful Olave last to #27.

Adam-I didn’t even mention Scotty. He fell so far out of favor with Brady it’s kinda a foregone conclusion that he won’t make it. Darden looked good in camp last year. I think they’ll give him another chance but they will probably have a backup plan ready in case he flops again. Early day 3 Wr/return guy might be the answer. If Grayson shines in camp and preseason he could easily be the #6. That would knock Miller, Johnson and Darden off the 53 most likely. Wr battle in camp gonna be lit.

  24. adam from ny Says:

what about christian watson from n. dakota state…

    what if he’s available at #60 ?

the tampa native is a football player

  25. adam from ny Says:

we gotta grab some d linemen early tho

  26. Jerseybuc Says:

My daughter was at Penn St when Godwin played there so I got to see him up close. Was thrilled with the draft pick but he is even better than I anticipated in the NFL. He will also miss a good part of the early season so Gage will hopefully hit the ground running.

  27. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Olave projected between 20 and 37-if available Olave is a no brainer.

  28. Stanglassman Says:

Adam- christian watson has flown up everyone’s mock draft boards. He’s going in the 1st round now on almost everyone’s board. As a Plant high grad myself I’m well aware of him being a hometown guy. I was hoping he wouldn’t get a invite to the combine. I knew he’d shoot up if he got to showcase his talent. I being said I’m still surprised to see him going in the 1st round.

  29. Stanglassman Says:

Godwin will not miss any regular season games. JBF is the same only site claiming this. It’s possible he has a set back in rehab but unlikely. Not all ACL injuries are the same. Godwin had a clean tear and his recovery should be faster than most.

  30. adam from ny Says:

if somehow watson is there at pick 60 in the 2nd round, i would be disappointed if we didn’t grab him…

    i would not use pick #27 on him…i’m thinking d-line/edge at #27

  31. Buczilla Says:

I’m glad that we finally have Godwin long term and Gage is a nice player, but I’m hoping that we draft another receiver in the first three rounds this year. Chris may or not be ready to start the season and given his injury history (significant time missed three years running) and the quality of depth behind Gage we could use another good receiver.

  32. Eddie Marz Says:

Love Godwin. Him and Evans make a great duo. These guys have so many ways that they can beat you, and Tampa keeps adding to the arsenal. GOBUCS!
