Bruce Arians Reveals The QB Behind Door No. 1

March 1st, 2022

Bucco Bruce Arians getting wired up today for his appearance on NFL Network.

Well this is certainly a curveball.

All we have heard the past couple of weeks was Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians building up Blaine Gabbert as the heir apparent to retired (?) Tom Brady.

Arians continued the Gabbert marketing campaign today at the NFL’s winter festival known as the “combine” held at the Indiana Convention Center (nee: Hoosier Dome).

But then after Arians spoke with Tampa Bay-area reporters, and then at the podium for all credentialed reporters from across the nation, Arians did his car wash function talking to SiriusXM NFL Radio, CBS Radio, Peacock and finally NFL Network. There on NFL Network, Arians pulled an Adam Wainwright with a sharp Uncle Charlie (curveball).

It is Kyle Trask, and not Gabbert, who is the quarterback behind Door No. 1.

Andrew Siciliano: Two years ago we sat here and talked about Door No. 1 was Jameis [Winston]. And then you said Door No. 2 could be… well, it turned out to be Tom Brady. What is Door No. 1 right now?

Bucco Bruce Arians: Door No. 1 right now is Kyle Trask. You know we drafted him last year in the second round. Love him. Been with him for a year. Blaine Gabbert is a free agent but he’s been with me and knows the system inside and out. Those guys I am very comfortable with. But we have to look behind Door No. 2. But Door No. 2 this year is a trade. You’ve got to have a partner.

Arians then added that the Bucs have spent the past month (all of February) calling every team looking for a quarterback.

Arians said he simply does not see where a team with a veteran quarterback is open to trading its starter because Arians doesn’t see a team with a quality starter that also has a backup plan. So as a result, Arians has pretty much ruled out a trade.

Joe has to think Arians is speaking in generalities because Houston is sure as hell shopping Deshaun Watson. And it seems the 49ers have a backup plan. And Joe has still yet to hear Minnesota coach Kevin O’Connell give a firm answer that Kirk Cousins will be the Vikings’ starting quarterback this fall.

So Trask is Door No. 1? Is that because he is the only Bucs quarterback under contract? Notice immediately after he said Trask is Door No. 1, Arians added that Gabbert is a free agent.

You can see Arians’ interview on NFL Network in the video below.

Perfect. We have a QB in place. Now let’s hear Licht say that same thing and move on to the task at hand. Signing free agents and drafting.

  2. Miller5252 Says:

JPP? “He’ll be playing somewhere.” Sounds like they’ll be moving on there.

  3. Leopold Stotch/BuccaneerButters Says:

    Finally!

  4. Jeff Says:

With no Marpet and no Brady this is now a 4 win team. Far and away the worst team in the South.

  5. Anonymous Says:

Jeff you are a idiot..time to leave your moms house and be a responsible adult.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Kyle Trask is our 1st string QB…..

  7. Niles Says:

He means Trask is the starter unless a stud veteran is available. That means Trask is likely the starter.

  8. Niles Says:

Where did all the FSU fans, er, Trask haters, go? LMAO.

  9. allbuccedup Says:

It will be hard to find a trade partner since Denver, Carolina and other teams have more to offer.

  10. Buccos Says:

We will easily win the NFC South with Trask as our QB. He was a great QB coming out of college and now he has had a year under Brady which I am sure that they took full advantage of. If they can use the extra money to re-sign the Super Bowl roster then we will be able to make another run at the Championship.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

How could Door Number 1 be anything other than Kyle Trask right now? He’s the ONLY QB on the roster.

Interesting though that BA didn’t say that re-signing Gabbert represented Door Number 2. Instead he mentioned ‘trade’.

  12. Weston Says:

GTFO with that 4 win nonsense.

  13. BradyBucs Says:

It sounds like he’s hedging a bit with Trask…

Like Trask is probably going on to be the starter to open the season, but Arians is setting up excuses if he doesn’t pan out saying there were no reasonable trades available. That goes along with his interest in Gabbert, a guy that knows his system, so if Trask fails he may be able to go with Gabbert of the Bucs resign him.

    THE ONLY PECULIAR THING…

Why wasn’t Trask activated for the playoff games where I believe they activated Griffin instead at QB3?

  14. Walter Says:

    I’m gonna vomit 🤢

  15. Defense Rules Says:

CBS Sports just came out with their Free Agent Mock Draft. Sure do hope that they’re full of you-know-what.

1 – Chris Godwin goes to the Lions.
2 – Ryan Jensen goes to the Giants.
3 – Carlton Davis goes to the Vikings.
4 – Bucs grab Teddy Bridgewater as a consolation prize. Guess that’d make Teddy Door #2.

  16. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Holy moly what a great interview. Dispelled all kinds of weird rumors. Love it. Bring on Trask!

  17. sasquatch Says:

Kyle Trask is the only QB under contract, so he can be the only current door #1. This is not really news. They’re still looking behind door #2.

  18. Snookman Says:

Man i love Bruce. Such a straight shooter. I can see why players not named AB like playing for this guy. Bruce will figure it out. So glad we have him

  19. Snookman Says:

Im ok with Trask. Let the guy develope If they truly believe he could be a good quarterback. I just feel confident with the direction of this franchise even though we’re going to go through a rebuild

  20. cmurda Says:

Nothing to see here. Nothing at all. The obvious answer. Anyone want to bet me that Trask is not the starter when the regular season starts. I’ll bet anything. This isn’t a rebuild yet. There is still a ton of talent on this team. Not time to throw the rookie into the fire.

  21. cmurda Says:

@ D Rules. Please no. Say it ain’t so. Godwin goes freaking nowhere. I’ll also bet money on that. Jensen probably is a cap casualty and Licht will do everything feasible to keep CD24. The biggest say it ain’t so is Bridgewater. If we get Teddy as our starter , it would tell me that the organization does believe it’s rebuild time. Licht and B.A. swear they are reloading and not rebuilding. Therefore that’s a hell no on Bridgewater.

  29. JimmyJack Says:

Could easily see how a creep like Watson is not on the table for Bruce and not even part of his thought process.

But it sounds like to me he is saying the only QB they are intrested to bring in for the longterm is not going to be traded. The Mel Kipers of the world are saying this is a terrible QB draft and that falls in line with Bruce saying there arent good backup plans for any teams trading away good QBs.

  30. QB1 Says:

SKBucsFan 100% agree. We won’t know what we have until we try. And it saves money needed for other spots.

I will be happy to see Trask behind center, if Brady doesn’t return.

We need to build the rest of the team around the QB. LFG!!!

  31. HC Grover Says:

    Good Trask is the man.

  32. BUCman Says:

They drafted Trask in the second round last year for a reason. They envisioned him to be Brady’s successor when he retired. Brady has now retired. This is the proper order of things. Draft a prospect your high on and develop him to replace the outgoing guy. Expecting to swipe a HOF Quarterback off another roster whenever you need one is unrealistic. I’m personally excited they’re going to give Trask a legitimate chance.

  33. Listnfrmafar Says:

How can anyone believe a word BA is saying? Trask hasn’t taken a snap all season and you expect him to come in and win the NFC South? With what Vaughn, Evan’s and Miller & Howard? They’re not going to pay Lenny, Gronk ain’t coming back and how does Trask help Godwin? If the Bucs don’t sign a great QB, this team is fuuuuuuukd.

  34. New England Patriots Fan Says:

@cmurda for its whenever is type D3shaun W@ts0n. Even if I’m complimentary and suggesting signing him or talking anything, it’s always under review. It’s why I’ve been nearly certain Tampa gets him, as they won’t let you say anything about the guys like he’s an active Tampa player. I could bash Brady or AB or anyone on team, but I can’t even talk QB stats if I type D3shaun W@ts0n.

  35. DBS Says:

So now we have the same people with 2 bobblehead dolls. Last week prayers for Gabbert now for Trask. You do realize we only have one under contract? These people spread more BS than the news media.

    “ BradyBucs Says:

    THE ONLY PECULIAR THING…

Why wasn’t Trask activated for the playoff games where I believe they activated Griffin instead at QB3?”

Not peculiar at all. You don’t play a rookie quarterback for the first time in a playoff, especially when you have several veterans available.

  37. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Tampa is clearly fighting to seek a trade with a Carr, Cousins or Watson type QB, but everyone is waiting on the AR and Wentz situation.

What is interesting in the previous article BA noted they are looking at 8 QBs but only sees 2 available QBs whom could potentially be SB caliber.

Who are those two available QBs as Tampa doesn’t seem to be involved in the AR or Wilson sweepstakes.

Maybe he means Murray and Watson or Watson and Carr?

  38. Tye Says:

Kyle could very well be on the same level as Joe Burrow…
Both had great success in the SEC and had a year to study playbook.. (Joe injured 1st season)..

  39. David Says:

Nothing that they say really matters until we see how it plays out but there’s a lot of truth to what he just said. The Buccaneers don’t have much as far as tradebait compared to a lot of teams that are looking for a QB and they don’t have the cap space for one of these QBs that it is supposed to get 35 million or more

  40. Rod Munch Says:

Again, no issues going with Trask and letting everyone except Godwin and Whitehead walk, getting all those comp picks, cleaning up the cap, then go into 2023 with a clean cap and a ton of picks.

If Trask stinks, which is what you’d expect with a 4th string QB starting, then the Bucs are awful, go 3-14, get a top 5 pick in the draft, have like five 3rd round picks, probably four 4th rounders, etc, and the Bucs have a clean cap to go get a real QB.

If Trask is good, then fantastic, then the Bucs have a QB, all the comp picks and a bunch of salary cap space. I think this is a very low percentage play, but it’s possible.

What I don’t want to see is resigning guys, having Trask or Gabbert at QB, being a bad team with no chance of winning anything, not getting the comp picks, and not having a clean cap in 2023, and having no real plan for the future.

If they can’t get a QB via a trade before FA begins, then take the L on the season, know you’re going to suck, and know that you’re going to be in fantastic shape in 2023.

  41. Buczilla Says:

Sounds good to me and if Trask stinks, we’ll be in a position to hopefully draft a better qb in 2023.

    There goes the Listn again.
“Trask hasn’t taken a snap all season and you expect him to come in and win the NFC South?”
He hadn’t taken a starting snap since Jr High and won the SEC East in 2020 with only 8 starts under his belt the yr before. Setting numerous UF and SEC records along the way.
It’s not like the guy played for Eastern Illinois or North Dakota State, (see Jittery G and Trey Lance)
If you are gonna be such a whiny negative little biotch just kill yourself or leave please

  43. Listnfrmafar Says:

Liar, liar, BA’s polyester fart smelling pants on fire.

  44. sasquatch Says:

Well, he’s not lying. He didn’t say they weren’t going to keep looking. Right now, Trask is the only QB under contract, so he’s door #1. He didn’t name him the starter for day 1.

  45. Rod Munch Says:

Poor Ryan Griffin, he gets no respect.

  46. Craig Says:

That took long enough. I have faith in Trask and hope that bears fruit. I’d say 8-9 or 9-8 in his first season, mainly because the rest of the team will have a few holes to fill.

Could be division champs at that, if D. Watson doesn’t end in Carolina, and is allowed to play this season.

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Craig – so a 4th stringer who is coming off a rookie year where he didn’t play and barely practiced can take a team with ‘holes’ to fill and go 8-9 or 9-8? LOL!

I’m betting 3-14 if it happens, as QB is literally the most important position in all of sports. But if the team was .500 and Trask looked good, then great, but to expect that is pretty insane in my opinion.

  48. WalkdaPlank Says:

Ryan Griffin has absolutely FLEECED the Bucs for years. I wish I could make 7 figures a year to do absolutely nothing but watch an NFL team practice all year.

  51. Pewter Power Says:

There is no one he can trade for. They are in a position that they need the draft picks. No choice but to go with trask especially if gabbert tries to leverage the situation and overestimate his worth

If D3shawn signs with Carolina, and Jimmy/Cousins in Pitt, Tampa will play all the best QBs in the NFL other than Justin Herbert in a single season 2022.

  56. Niles Says:

    “Rod Munch says:
If Trask stinks, which is what you’d expect with a 4th string QB starting.”

Stoopid. He wasn’t 4th string. He wasn’t on the active roster. By design. It was a developmental year as they had no need for him with three veteran quarterbacks.

You must be related to Jerry Glanville, who told Brett Favre his rookie season he would never play and next year traded him to the the Packers.

  57. BringBucsBack Says:

We are “not trading the best QB ever!”, doesn’t necessarily sound like he believes Brady is positively retired. If they sincerely believed it, then trading the rights to a retired player for player/draft capital, should be possible if not easy, right?

While candid, I don’t think that announcing that the new QB becomes #2, if Brady returns, benefits the Bucs while trying to lure new QBs.

  58. Craig Says:

Rod- Trask was not a 4th string QB where he wasn’t good enough to play.

He was a rookie on a team with Tom Brady starting. That makes all the difference in the world. If he was on the Colts team, yeah I would expect him to have played, or the Giants, or Panthers.

Who would have say Brady so Trask could get some snaps? Ridiculous.

  59. BUCman Says:

I echo both Niles and Craig regarding Munch’s constantly stating Trask was a 4th string QB. I’ve tried arguing this point with him before but he’s anti Trask and has no other argument against him so he keeps repeating it. Weak!!!!!!!

Ryan Griffin has absolutely FLEECED the Bucs for years.

Fleeced? I mean it’s a good living, but it’s not like he ever made much (by NFL standards). If he provides another arm and an emergency backup, it’s worth it for the team.

  61. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Just more BS from bruce arrogance.

  62. JimmyJack Says:

Its really very trivial if Trask was a 4th string or 3rd or 2nd. In a lot of situations Trask would of been the backup or even competed in preseason to win the starters job. He was never drafted to even conpete for the backup position on this team.

We were chasing a ring. We couldnt fool around with an inexperinced rookie be the next man up. Trask never had a chance to win the backup role and it was by design. Its not a knock on the kid at all that he was a 4th stringer. That was the exact plan when they drafted him.

  63. New England Patriots Fan Says:

On trading Toms rights even if retired he has a no trade and no tag clause, so he would have to agree to a trade for rights even if retired.

Also you can trade a players rights even if a player is retired normally you wouldn’t even need their permission but usually the player is committing to play see Gronk or Marshawn.

So Tom wouldn’t need to even commit to coming from retirement just agree for his rights to be traded.

It’s why a trade with Miami before the draft could be a peak value for Toms contract rights

  64. Oneilbuc Says:

I have a question for every one on here who thinks Trask will suck . Who lead all quarterbacks in every stat in college in 2020 ?

  65. Defense Rules Says:

cmurda … ‘Am I the only one that spends way too much time trying to figure out what word is sending me into “Your comment is awaiting” purgatory?’

I don’t think it’s a word actually. The algorithm seems to trigger on a number of different ways you phrase things, ways you spell things, how you quote things, how you use Joe’s name, even how many comments you made in a given period of time. Doesn’t like swear words either (although it’s OK apparently with spelling he11 or he!!). Doesn’t look to be all that restrictive though; I’m actually spending a lot less time in the dungeon than I used to. Probably end up there for this though.

  66. Rod Munch Says:

    QB depth chart last year…

    1. Brady
    2. Gabbert
    3. Griffin
    4. Trask

Not even sure why people would debate that he wasn’t actually a 4th string QB, because he literally was. Griffin was on the practice squad, yet every single media report I heard said he got more snaps in practice than Trask. If Brady went down and Gabbert started, it was Griffin would be active as the backup on gameday.

I’m not saying Trask is a bust, I don’t know that yet, but he is absolutely a developmental QB, and generally it takes more than one year for those guys to do anything good in the NFL. If you start Trask early, he almost certainly is going to be awful. He looked terrible last preseason, and he’d look a lot worse against guys who aren’t working at Burger King today. If you start him early you almost certainly are going to ruin him.

Trask is a modern Danny Wuerffel, and I thought Wuerffel was going to be a good NFL QB, how could someone that accurate, who could throw a ball deep, not be good. But he didn’t throw with NFL velocity, and that doomed him. Watching the tape on Trask in college, he doesn’t throw with NFL velocity, anyone who can’t see that, I don’t know what to tell you other than you’re a fanboi or just don’t know football. It’s not like I’m alone with that emulation, probably a dozen different scouting reports I read all said he doesn’t throw an NFL ball. However Trask is a lot bigger and stronger than Wuerffel, and he has shown that he can throw with velocity in his NFL pro-day and on some plays in the preseason. So there’s hope there, but if you’re a fan of his, you should not want him rushed into this spot.

  67. T REX Says:

@buccos – he did not take a single snap…not even scout team reps.

Trask is basically a rookie still.

  70. adam from ny Says:

i agree with rod the rug muncher…

    because…

if trask is the starter and goes 8-9 or 9-8 with that schedule, he is gonna have to have a multitude of stellar games…

thus, we have then found our quarterback of the future in kyle trask…

if he can grab 8-9 wins in 2022, then look at the joke of a schedule we have for 2023 (i know, who knows that far down the road, but seems fairly good now)…we should go a solid 3-4 games better in 2023 with the cap room to add in some players for 2023…

i have us slightly better than rod’s number with trask…

imho we are looking at 4-13 or 5-12 if we trask our way thru the 2022 season…

and essentially there went the culture with tommy terrific

  71. Listnfrmafar Says:

SB, open your opiod induced eyes, did you see next seasons schedule? Oneilbucyall, Trask may start out like Mac Jones if the Bucs are lucky but it didn’t take long for DC’s to figure him out. I doubt he will because BL is NO McDaniels and BA just wants to sling it. 6-11 tops because once these players go into losing mode AGAIN, they’ll quit like their coaches.

  72. BUCman Says:

Active Roster QB depth chart last year:
    1. Tom Brady(7 time Super Bowl winner, future Hall of Famer)
    2. Blaine Gabbert (veteran in 4th season in Arians offense)
    3. Kyle Trask (redshirted 2nd round draft pick in development

Practice squad QB depth chart last year:
    1. Ryan Griffin

  73. Oneilbuc Says:

Listnfrmafar. I believe Trask can be a good quarterback depending on who’s coaching him . Now I don’t know what he’s going to do in the NFL. But just looking at what he done in college and leading all quarterbacks in college in 2020 you have see what he can do. Because who ever you draft you are going by what they did in college.

  74. Brazen Zebra Says:

Patience. Have faith my friends. The Bucs will win at least one playoff game in 2023, and Brady will be throwing for the Niners. Everything else is noise.

  75. Tim R. Says:

It is a time that the Bucs look towards the future. Trask deserves to get a starting chance under his belt. It will take a year for him to got comfortable. He will be a good quarterback. The number of players leaving will mean it is time to rebuild.

  76. Listnfrmafar Says:

Oneilbucyall there have been MANY qb standouts in college that shat themselves in the NFL, they get a little timid when playing against the best of the best.

  77. Snoman Says:

Trask has an NFL Arm and those that have not seen it in person have no clue what they are talking about. What Trask did not have is NFL Mechanics. He has now watched the most mechanically sound thrower of the ball as has ever played the game. Why did Brady not lose anything on his ball, like most other quarterbacks did in their late 30s…superior mechanics. Brady has an effortless, compact, and no waste of energy throwing motion that he did not have coming out of college. His mechanics were not great. Watching his throwing motion from 2001 and then look at it again in 2021, big difference. Tom House, who was Brady’s second throwing coach after Tom Martinez died, has been around Trask for the last year too so I am betting he has worked with him also. What Trask has is heart and determination and a high football IQ….sounds a lot like Brady in his early career. Hopefully Trask develops into 80% of what Brady was and if so you have a franchise QB.

  78. Erik Says:

I’m very curious to see how Trask does. He has sat out the whole last season and trained with Brady. He got a lot of good tips and knowledge from the goat. He has had plenty of time to learn the play book and get familiar with the team and playing styles. I’m sure he is anxious to get out there and show this team what he is capable of. Gabbert knows everything about this team but I think he will always be a 2nd string quarterback. Many of the other teams are having good success with rookie quarterbacks and maybe Bruce is seeing a pattern and wants to try out this kid and see what he can do. I have high hopes for Trask.

Blaine Gabbert got to play with the best QB ever and if he is smart he learned something in seeing Brady play for two years … thank you Tom Brady school’s out…let’s play ball.

Listnfrmafar. How do you know if he’s good or bad if doesn’t get a chance. Every player that’s drafted teams are going by what they did in college regardless of the position. If the bucs draft a quarterback next year or this year all you have is what they done in college it’s not that hard. If balls than we have our quarterback . If he suck than draft another quarterback it’s that simple. But to ignore how he played in college when that’s all you have to go by is another narrative that’s being set against Trask . Trevor Lawrence was supposed to be the next Elway and he looked horrible last year. But no one is bashing him they’re going to give him a chance because he’s a rookie . But at the same time everyone believes he should be the number one pick because of what he did in college. He played with a better team overall than Trask and Trask was the better quarterback in 2020 but Trask ain’t getting no credit for what he did in college but other quarterbacks are .

  82. Oneilbuc Says:

And plus Trask completed over 70 percent of his passes and had more yards and touchdowns than every quarterback in college in 2020!!

Joe heard something from an NFL assistant this week in Indianapolis related to NFL quarterbacks. He said, “Once you’ve been on an NFL roster for a year what you did in college doesn’t mean jacksh!t. You are on a different level of football now.”
