Big Expectations For Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

March 28th, 2022

Talk of the Buccaneers’ heralded second-year edge rusher was on the lips of general manager Jason Licht this evening at the NFL Owners Meetings, where Joe is patrolling the landscape.

Licht was asked about expectations for Joe Tryon-Shoyinka as he enters the 2022 campaign as an edge rusher the Bucs desperately need.

The expected major sophomore improvement (the kind great players routinely make) is something the Bucs believe is likely, Licht said, because Tryon-Shoyinka puts in the work and proved he has the tools.

“I think he’s got a chance to take a big leap in his second year. He works incredibly hard. He’s very smart. He’s very athletic, as you guys have all seen,” Licht said. “So typically sometimes you see a big jump at that position in that second year. He’s learned a lot. So I’m excited to get him out there on the field.”

Yeah, Licht didn’t say much there, but there was energy in his voice and not every GM will put public pressure on a 22-year-old in line to take over for a franchise icon in Jason Pierre-Paul.

Joe feels good about JTS making that leap. He’s had excellent coaching and Pro Bowl mentors, and there’s continuity among the staff and he stayed healthy last season.

But for every edge rusher who makes the jump, there’s another who goes the other direction or gets hurt. See Noah Spence 2017. That’s just the NFL.

    Resign JPP

  2. David Says:

Man I hope he makes that jump. He showed awesome flashes in preseason. At the very least, there should be a big improvement just because he should be more comfortable with the defense. He should be able to play more fluidly without thinking.

  3. Biff Barker Says:

Buc fans will soon know. Game time when JTS is on film. Bucs don’t need another OJ, Hargraves or the last QB here. Don’t chase the BS “potential” bait.

    Good luck JTS!

  4. NCBucfan Says:

We can’t hope or wait, a pass rusher is needed in the 1st or 2nd. While I have faith in Tryon, young pass rushers are never a sure thing. See Gaines Adams and and Daquan bowers!

  5. firethecannons Says:

JTS has potential then again so Anthony Nelson, between the two of them we should get some sacks

  6. Coburn Says:

I sure hope so. I get the feeling our pass rush will be out biggest weakness this year

The Noah Spence thing is a bad example. Spence was not a good fit at DE or OLB, and although he did show some pass rush skill, he also suffered a pretty severe shoulder injury… and he was pretty much done. JTS is way more gifted than Spence was, both in terms of build and athleticism. He’s got the gifts and it’s unfair to be too critical of his play as a rookie, especially after missing a year of football. I’m expecting big things. I have no interest in going back to JPP.

  8. Coburn Says:

Need to hope Nelson keeps improving as well. Need a third guy to rotate in and some depth in case of injuries… We are pretty thin at edge and dline

  9. Biff Barker Says:

    NCbuc,

We want both. JTS to step up and draft another.

  10. NCBucfan Says:

Biff Barker, Yessir! I really want JTS to dominate! And like the gurus say, you can never have enough pass rushers!

  11. Buczilla Says:

JTS looks legit and we definitely need him to improve if we are going to do any damage in the playoffs. Sadly, our luck at drafting pass rushing olb’s/de’s has been abysmal with Leroy Selmon being nearly the only exception. Chidi Ahanotu had a good if unspectacular career, Broderick Thomas had two good years, Hugh Green was nothing special with us, and Marcus Jones had a couple of good years. That’s it! Hopefully it all clicks for JTS this year and he can help Shaq terrorize qb’s.

  12. Ash Says:

I feel jts will make the leap and am excited to see what he has to offer as a starter. Definitely has elite tools to work with seems to have great work ethic and a willingness to learn and improve his game. If Wyatt isn’t there at 27 I don’t see them drafting a pash rusher in the first might be a wr I know the fanbase won’t like it but I could really see them doing it. I’d like them to draft cb or safety in the first if they don’t trade down.

  13. stpetebucsfan Says:

I don’t see him taking over a game yet but if Licht can patch up the DL with perhaps Suh and a #1 draft pick and put a “team” of pass rushers on the field with guys like Suh to eat up the blockers with Vea, JTS could put up some big numbers.

  14. BillyBucco Says:

What we need is JTS to dominate, JPP resign and draft a pass rusher.
I hated seeing freaking Stafford have all day.

Couldn’t say the same for Brady.
Yes I know about Wirfs, but I really don’t think it would have mattered.

Without a beast of a pass rush we are gonna need the reincarnation of Sean Taylor on the back end to make a difference.

I still didn’t see that happen either

  15. Esteban85 Says:

JTS needs to bulk up a bit and play more anticipatory football. He obviously has the skills to play in the league. I think he makes the jump considering his off season training thus far. The dude I’m worried about is DWhite45. He must reconcile last years performance with the breakout year we expected in 21’.

  16. Tampabaybucfsn Says:

Rooting for JTS & haven’t given up on JPP yet…If he priced himself right…we should sign him

  17. Eric b Says:

If we can keep Suh!! Sign Hightower for a good price, also trey flowers, and Mathieu!! We would be solid on d!!
    UNFINISHED BUISSNESS LFGO!!!

  18. Buccos Says:

JPP is NOT done. We will be making a huge mistake if we don’t bring him back. He is the ultimate warrior. Great against the run and the pass. It would be idiotic to give up on him considering the injuries that he has come back from before. The heart and soul of the Super Bowl defense.

  19. TBChucky Says:

Hoping we go DT in the 1st round. But I definitely wouldn’t be disappointed if the took another young OLB.. JTS took a year off of football due to Covid. He still had a good camp showing as a rookie, and did a decent job with his snaps played. I can definitely see him improving. Especially with the increased roll..

  20. J Says:

    JPP is the Man!!❤

  21. Steven Carroll Says:

Resign JPP he is backbone of defense
