Trading Up In The Draft

February 8th, 2022

Draft strategy.

Joe understands some websites offer mock drafts two or three years out and repopulate them weekly. Joe understands why it is out there but doesn’t understand the concept. At all.

(Joe loves position breakdowns and rankings. Mocks? That’s just dart-throwing for 99.99999 percent of the mockers.)

Joe is mocked out. The only mock drafts Joe wants to see are Joel Buchsbaum’s and Mike Mayock’s final mocks. That is unlikely to happen because Buchsbaum is dead and Mayock is unemployed.

In a story about potential first-round quarterbacks come April 28, Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report threw out six teams he could see drafting a quarterback in the first round. One was the Bucs.

In fact, Moton suggested the Bucs he could see trading up for a quarterback.

It wouldn’t shock Joe but a few things have to happen first. Again, the Great Mystery of Kyle Trask. No one outside of folks who collect checks from Team Glazer has seen Trask since August when Trask threw against Canadian truck drivers, janitors and mortgage refinance agents.

If the Bucs think they have something in Trask, they won’t draft a quarterback. If Trask is disappointing to them, then the Bucs may be in the market to draft a quarterback.

Joe doesn’t think the Bucs will rely on any quarterback this season who is taking his first NFL snaps this September.

(Yes, if Trask balls out all summer and looks like John Elway in August, the Bucs should then seriously consider giving him the starting job. Please, Gators fans, quit trying to twist every consonant Joe types into Joe being on a crusade to tar and feather Trask. Joe has zero clue if he is the next Mike Glennon or the next Josh Allen. At this point nobody knows outside One Buc Palace.)

Our roster doesn’t indicate a team that is going to rebuild with a rookie QB. A FA pickup is almost a certainty!

  2. allbuccedup Says:

This is a very weak draft for QBs, the last couple of years it was a heck of a lot stronger. I do not see a QB in this draft to trade up for. None of the QBs in the senior bowl looked like a first round pick maybe a high second round. You would be better off seeing what 2023 brings in that position.

  3. Ash Says:

They are not trading up in this weak QB class if they do that and Trask isn’t working out it will be next year in a much stronger QB class

  4. Tampabaybucfsn Says:

Why draft a QB, much less trade up for one, if you haven’t even tried Trask yet?
    Makes zero sense.

  5. Rick Says:

Virtually no chance of drafting a QB outside of an Aaron Rodgers type slide where you just get a can’t miss guy late in the round. By all accounts Trask looks good physically, the mental part gets sorted out by playing.

  6. tampabayallday Says:

Trading up for a QB in this draft would be the final nail in the coffin

  7. View from 132 Says:

Agree with Tampabaybucfsn here. This is illogical.

  8. Craig Says:

The Bucs spent years on the Freeman experiment, five years on the Jameis experiment. If Trask shows any flashes of life, they will give him two, maybe three, years.

I think Trask is going to surprise a lot of the FSU fans, and a few others. He took a very mediocre team to the Sugar Bowl. It is not his fault that the three good players on the team sat it out and he had to throw it to a bunch of high schoolers.

  9. Swampbuc Says:

    I’m a Gator.

Trashk sucks. Also, there is no one in college now that would be better than him in year one; therefore, please no QB drafted in the first round or trading up. Just take the medicine with Buttwater or some other scrub while Brady figures out that the Horsefaced Commandant isn’t so fun to hang out with 24/7.

  10. Tye Says:

Joe Burrow got hurt early his rookie season so did not play long… His first full season and he takes the Bengals (of all teams) to the Super Bowl…

The whole idea of people bringing their college bias into in NFL, seems futile to me…. Especially FSU and Florida… Neither has been dominate in quite some time…

Winston wasn’t a BUST because he came from FSU… He just sucked!

Trask isn’t guaranteed success or failure coming from the Gators… He either lights it up or fails because of his own abilities.. Not one person know with certainty that Trask will pass or fail, but it will remain a mystery until he gets several games behind him!

  11. Marine Buc Says:

I agree with the above comments… This is not the year to move up for a QB.

This is a year to draft a WR or CB.

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

Agreed that this is not a great QB class. Unless they’re eyeing Pickett, I don’t see this happening.

  13. SB Says:

Trask is better than Pickett or Corral. Trask would be Easily a top 10 pick and the first QB off the board if he would have been able to wait a yr.

  14. Mike Says:

Bucs need to spend their draft capital on filling holes left by free agents, such as a DT to replace Suh, a DE to replace JPP (potentially), a CB, a WR, etc. I don’t see the Bucs drafting a QB, at least not in the first 3 or 4 rounds.

  15. Buczilla Says:

I wouldn’t trade up since picks are too damn precious and no one is talking about sure things in this qb class, but if Malik Willis is there at 27, I’d take him in a heartbeat. Dude has tons of potential and I don’t want us to make the same mistake with Trask that we made with Jameis. Let Trask and Willis compete!

  16. JimbobBucsFan Says:

That Buccaneers trading up for a pick in the top ten in the first round of this year’s draft is as likely as (1)Tom Brady changing his mind and immediately coming out of retirement and returning to the Bucs (2) Deshaun Watson being free of all legal problems in the next three weeks and becoming a trade target for us. Neither of the latter two things is absolutely impossible. “You decide!” 😉 😙

  17. Pewter Power Says:

There is no quarterback in the draft worth trading up for. Besides that would be completely idiotic to those who think the playoff window is open so can’t start trask but would draft a rookie to play ahead of him. If Licht thinks trask ranks higher than most quarterbacks coming out this year nicks from guys who don’t follow the Bucs are useless

  18. Austin Says:

Trade up to get that DT Davis from Georgia

  19. Posey99 Says:

“Trask is better than Pickett or Corral. Trask would be Easily a top 10 pick and the first QB off the board if he would have been able to wait a yr.”

    Exactly, this.

  20. Posey99 Says:

I don’t see why we wouldn’t want to put trask in with our current roster. Solid o-line, great receivers, a solid defense. What do you do wait until all the players are gone so he can get sacked 5 times a game and have nobody to throw to? seems like the ideal situation to try him now and make him beat our a vet like gabbert or a FA

  21. SB~LV Says:

    “Horsefaced Commandant” … Bwahahahahaa

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Joe doesn’t think the Bucs will rely on any quarterback this season who is taking his first NFL snaps this September.’

Is that just a gut feel Joe or is that based on something you’ve heard around One Buc Palace? I noticed that you caveated your stance nicely right after you fell on your sword.

At some point reality will hit home at One Buc HQ. Tom Brady’s retired. We’ve got LOTS & LOTS of open spots to fill … starters, key rotational guys as well as backups. We’ve got limited funds to buy our way out of this current situation. Unpleasant decisions WILL be made.

We’ve got a decent chance to win the NFC South regardless of how well we do because the rest of our division is even worse off than we are. Doesn’t make us a Super Bowl team though; just makes us (potentially) better than some bad competition. We’ve got some serious TEAM-BUILDING to do this year & next to contend with the big boys.

  23. D-Rome Says:

Mock drafts are quite possibly the dumbest thing anyone can become invested in.

  24. Larry Says:

Trade up for who??? Forget it!!!

  25. DaBux Says:

If we’re trading up, grab one of the DL or LB from Georgia. Lavonte is getting long in the tooth.

  26. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … There’s a particularly good article in The Ringer today titled ‘The Bengals Rebuild Will Be the Envy of the NFL. How Replicable Is It?’. In Section 2 it talks about Bengals OC Brian Callahan and how he trusts Joe Burrow with the offense. A great lesson in there IMO, but the Bucs will never learn it as long as BA is our head coach.

    (Oh ya, it’s at https://www.theringer.com/nfl-playoffs/2022/2/8/22923031/bengals-rebuild-super-bowl-nfl-envy ).

  27. SKBucsFan Says:

DB/LB is the only position worth trading g up for in this draft. And there are plenty of good ones out there. No need to panic.

  28. JimbobBucsFan Says:

A good reality check, Defense Rules.

If we can find a veteran QB from the outside who is a great fit for our schemes he will nevertheless not have mastered the playbook by September or October. Even Tom Brady did not begin to “look great” until late in 2020 and into the playoffs. Many commentators were writing him off during the season. He showed us last year how mastery looks after a year in the system. The records he set showed what HE could do in spite of all of the injuries.

Though, I truly do not know what to expect any more than anyone else does right now I think the odds are this. Blaine Gabberts will be our starter come September. Trask will be given the chance to take over during the season. As a fan I would always maintain high hopes for great post season results. At the same time internally my realistic expectations would be lower. I would expect that 2023/24 would probably be the more realistic opportunity for us to ascend to the top once again.

  29. Doug Says:

Trask would have been a top pick this year if he had waited a year. I truly think he’s going to be a solid quarterback, if we keep drafting linemen I don’t think we can go wrong.

  30. Hodad Says:

The Bucs will be starting 1st round pick, 10th overall QB Blaine Gabbert. The 6 5 236 lb QB has four years in this system. He helped put the game plans in the last 2 years with Brady, Clyde, Moore, BL, and gang. Clyde said he acted as another QB coach the last 2 years. Blaine Gabbert is going to be starting, get used to it.

  31. steele Says:

Is Trask better than Pickett, Corral, Howell and Strong? Answer is unknown. It seems to be the case, but there are so many problems with Trask, from mechanics to injury history and relatively minimal game experience.

Pickett, Howell, Strong, Ridder all had bad Senior Bowls. Very discouraging to the idea that one of these, or a sleeper in this draft, could work.

I’m afraid this looks like an offseason with no good options at QB. Getting any legit top QB good enough to get this team to the playoffs—Rodgers, Wilson, Cousins—is unlikely if teams refuse to trade within conference and unrealistically costly.

The idea of grabbing a young veteran with in need of better coaching and a fresh opportunity—Mike White, Drew Lock—still makes more sense to me.
They have the tools and some starting experience, and won’t cost a fortune.
Have one of these compete with Trask. Sign another veteran purely for backup.

  32. Mort Says:

Zero chance Jason trades up for one of these garbage QBs. They’ll all be over drafted. And we have a dude who is better than all of them already.

  33. firethecannons Says:

Trask=the next Josh Allen–wow would that not be coool!!!!!!!
How about we break down some Trask Gator game–I for one would love more info on that.

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

Build the Defense!!! We’re on the cusp of being great there. Not that many holes to fill and a great draft could put us over the hump.

If neither Gabbert or Trask come through there’s time to get a QB next year.

  35. Joe Says:

Is that just a gut feel Joe or is that based on something you’ve heard around One Buc Palace? I noticed that you caveated your stance nicely right after you fell on your sword.

The Bucs have a strong roster. They have a solid shot of a deep playoff run. Those chances go way down if you are starting any QB who has never taken a snap in the NFL.

yeah, yeah, yeah. A green QB could blow up and destroy defenses. You going to bet the mortgage on that?

  36. Coburn Says:

If anything with lots of free agents set to leave and cap situation trading down makes more sense this year, but takes two to tango. Certainly doesn’t seem like a draft where there is a qb you’d be trading up for. Maybe. Even trade for future picks this year in case you want ammo to move up next year if Trask seems like a dud

“Why draft a QB, much less trade up for one, if you haven’t even tried Trask yet?
    Makes zero sense. ”

Well, they have had a year of working with him. While there was no chance of him taking the starting role from Brady, coaches would have at least had time to evaluate him.

The Bucs have a lot of coaches, and the reason for that was so that no players were neglected.

That said, we don’t really know what they think of Trask. They could know plenty that we don’t.

  38. firethecannons Says:

Just got done watching Kyle Trask highlights–he sure had some good weopons at Florida, Pitts, Toney and Grimes. His offensive line seemed weak. Honestly what is not to like–highlights are sweet. I reiterate let us roll with Kyle Trask. We have a tough schedule do not under any circumstances part with our draft picks–we need to rebuild this team not spend the farm on an old injury prone fill in the blank.

  39. David Says:

There are no QBs in this draft worth getting.
The draft is loaded with D-line and DBs

  40. Bruce Blahak Says:

    Gabbert, Trask….and Trubisky!

  41. DEEEMO Says:

DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE….That’s what wins games! It’s a old saying but very true! Offense puts people in the stands but DEFENSE wins games!

  42. Rod Munch Says:

Mock drafts are fun, it’s just educated guesses, but so are 99% of the stories where people are speculating about news.
