Selling Blaine Gabbert

February 22nd, 2022

No. No. No.

Joe is having one hell of an ugly 2014 flashback.

And as one popular 2014 personality used to say, the spin stops here.

Back then, the powers that be at One Buc Palace were selling Josh McCown as the quarterback to lead the Bucs out of the NFC South dumpster and to the Super Bowl. It was nauseating the minute it happened. McCown was a nice guy and a proven-bad quarterback when he landed in Tampa just before his 35th birthday.

The move made zero sense and Joe assumes general manager Jason Licht knew better but was just stuck under the wing of new head coach and overlord Lovie Smith.

Team Glazer? They were working hard at crafting The Lost Decade of Buccaneers football. Joe assumes they knew better and had a bigger and covert plan that included McCown under center.

Fast-forward to 2021, and it feels like the Bucs are selling Blaine Gabbert to take over for Tom Brady. Joe has seen articles in various publications, including the latest in the Tampa Bay Times. And Joe personally has heard other things through back channels.

It’s like there’s an orchestrated effort to brace Bucs fans for a Gabbert season.

“People may not like the overall record, but Blaine had eight head coaches and eight coordinators his first eight years,” Bucco Bruce Arians said. “He beat Jacksonville their best year and beat Tennessee their big year for us in Arizona. And he’s been in the system now. I don’t have a problem there and let Kyle continue to grow. Either one. (Gabbert) has never played with a team this good. He’s got all the respect in the locker room that he can have.”

No. No. No.

Hard “no” on Gabbert. Joe will not waver.

Bucs fans deserve better than to be insulted with the notion of Gabbert’s 13-35 record as a starter leading a talented Bucs offense. He’s not the next Rich Gannon, and he’s not building for the future. Gabbert as the go-to quarterback in his 11th season is unacceptable and a needless and giant step backwards.

    Absolutely No No No.

  2. Ash Says:

Whether you like it or not might be the only choice they have it’s not like it’s super market and you can get the QB you want sometimes you got to settle and 2022 feels like a time when you will have to settle for Gabbert so brace yourself to take your medicine and accept it.

  3. Anonymous Says:

If he’s the QB then say goodbye to all our offensive free agents cause they’re not playing with a glorified back up. No matter how much you pay them and say goodbye to fans being at the stadium. No fan is supporting this.

  4. Buc4evr Says:

The sad fact is that the Bucs are not going to be able to trade for Rodgers, Wilson or Murray, will lose key free agents, and will end up in a rebuilding mode.
Maybe the Bucs see the handwriting on the wall and are pre-selling Gabbert and Trask. Brace yourselves for the worst Bucs fans….

  5. Marine Buc Says:

I depends on what BA and BL think of Kyle Trask.

If BA/BL view Trask as a career backup or if he just isn’t ready yet – then YES – we may want to add a cheap vet to the mix (Dalton, Bridgewater, Turbisky, etc.).

If BA/BL view Trask as the next starting QB of the Bucs then why not just sign Gabbert on the cheap and let things take there course.

If the Bucs make a major move for a QB I would be surprised.

However – I was also surprised when TB12 came to town… Crazy things happen sometimes…

  6. Buc92’ Says:

Gabbert will be someone’s starting tight end if not ours . He sucks , & if Arians thinks he’s good then Arians sucks as well

    GoBucs!

  7. Bqen green Says:

3 0 8 5 5 3. That’s games started since 2013, omitting the last two years in Tampa. Gabbert isn’t the answer, no matter the question

  8. Eric Says:

IHaving 8 didferent coordinators could mean they guy sucks so bad 8 different guys got fired trying to get something out of him.

Its a thought so depressing to border on cruelity if Arians tries it.

  9. Bucs since 76 Says:

The Bucs need to start Trask to find out if he is the QB of the future. Then sign a capable backup like Bridgewater in case Trask shows he doesn’t have it. Trask is not a rookie he has been in the system for one year. Burrow took Cincy to the Super Bowl in year two. I am not saying Trask compares to Burrow because who knows how good or bad he is until he plays. I don’t thinks Gilbert is the answer and would rather sign Griffin back them him.

  10. Bqen green Says:

Another delusional statement by BA. Nonsensical comments like these, only bolster the argument for his institutionalization.

  11. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

The Bucs were totally unprepared for Brady to retire so soon.
That is quite obvious,, and now they are scrambling to replace him.
Do not be shocked if Gabbert starts for us next year, backed up by Trask.
I think Brady wants to go to the 49ers, but they will have to trade us for Brady, since we own his rights.

  12. Craig Says:

The Bucs could bring back Josh Rosen, for free almost, and have a three way competition for QB.

I don’t think that will happen, Gabbert will get a coronation that will last three or four weeks. Then we can all pray for Trask to be our savior.

I hope the kid is up to he, he had such a horrid college career. Just lifted an awful team from the cellar of the SEC and was a defensive backfield away from beating Bama in the SEC title.

  13. Bqen green Says:

It also begs the question, if Arians is crazy enough to have that opinion of gabbert, can you really trust his judgement to develop Trask. Forgot the Brady stuff, Ben can’t believe the bucs didn’t retire him, and promote leftwich.

  14. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I still think Carson Wentz, Mitch Trubisky or Teddy Bridgewater are coming to town. We should learn a little next week.

  15. 407buc Says:

If BA decides to keep riding the Gabbert train and we start him by the start of the season I’ll be calling for his firing. That will destroy free agent prospects coming here and we’ll win 5 games MAX with gabbert. He sucks

  16. Bucfan81 Says:

If this is literally the only answer they can come up with at QB then just start the rebuild now. Gabbert is not going to win anything little less get you to the playoffs. So why postpone the rebuild for another year just so Bruce can keep coaching. Put in Trask and start trading the older talent on this team for draft picks and start rebuilding.

  17. Beejezus-belt Says:

I don’t think (I hope) Arians would not stay around for a year of Gabbert.

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

This is just more proof that BA is a overrated coach who can’t develop a quarterback !!

  19. Adrnagy Says:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly ‘done a lot’ to acquire Russell Wilson
By FOX SportsPublished 4 hours ago

    3 – 1st rd
    1. Pass rusher (joe tryon)
    Oline or TE.

    For russell wilson.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Like I’ve said….Licht is doing everything possible to bring in a top-tier QB…..but it’s not happening.
His only option is Gabbert/Trask or Trask/Gabbert or a number of lower tier QBs…..
Suck it up & get ready…..at least with that we keep our draft picks and have a few bucks for FAs.

  21. Robert Says:

meh, doesn’t matter hypersonic missles will be here before the season at this rate

  22. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

When I saw “Selling Blaine Gabbert” I was wondering who the Bucs were selling him to and how much they’d get paid for him……

  23. gbobucsfan Says:

There is no way Russ Wilson is worth 3 1st’s and 2 starters. NO WAY.

  24. Perimeter Blocker Says:

That this is even a possibility is a joke.

  25. Caleb Lee Says:

If this happens I’m taking a play out of Brady’s book and retire. Maybe for a year.. never say never.

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

How is this “proof” that BA can’t develop a QB?
Ever heard of an “insurance policy”?! Most teams have them.

Gabbert is not a long-term solution at QB. A blind man could see that! What he does provide is experience and knowledge.

Given our FA situation, I don’t see us spending a lot of cash on a QB. My guess is Trask/Gabbert at QB.

  27. Defense Rules Says:

You’re ASSUMING Joe that Gabbert becomes our starting QB by default. That’s a pretty big assumption.

He’s quarterbacked some lousy teams (13-35 is not sterling). Been with 5 teams in 10 years (missed 2019), and has averaged 56.3% completion rate. That’s not gonna fly in today’s NFL. On the good news side, he’s big (6’5″ & 235 lbs) & scrambles fairly well (may come in handy).

I doubt that BA will just hand the reins to Gabbert. There’ll be a COMPETITION at least between Trask & Gabbert (plus hopefully 1 other) and one will pull away. Who knows, during the course of the season we may get to see 2 (or even 3) different starting QBs. Too many unknowns right now; can’t ASSUME anything at this point.

  28. Listnfrmafar Says:

gobucs@ you are absolutely right. When I the last time Wilson won. He’s a great QB but that is way too much for him. Blaine G, has had the most interaction with TB12. Maybe he learned something.

  29. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Just as Fox said “goodbye” to The Spin Stops Here O’Reilly, bye bye Gabbert (or just hold the clipboard). Ticket sales would crater.

  30. D-Rome Says:

We all knew Josh McCown was a bridge-the-gap QB and that season was to tank for the #1 pick (which ended up being a bust). Bucs fans knew and accepted this because we understood that the window to contend for Super Bowls was not open (it remained shut the five years afterwards).

Though Tom Brady is retired I would not say the window to be in contention for a Super Bowl is shut with the players on this team. They have to get the QB right and if they roll out Blaine Gabbert the Bucs would lose the trust with the fans and the players. That said, it would be funny to hear players like Mike Evans publicly say he believes they can contend with Blaine Gabbert.

  31. Bqen green Says:

Adrnagy, Ben doesn’t doubt the bucs have interest in Wilson. The comp is a little too much, but not insane. This is a copycat leauge, and teams took note of the Rams model. They trade first rounders like they’re thirds. It does make sense. The draft, even in the first round is a very inexact science. It becomes even more of a crap shoot, when you’re talking QBs. Getting a good one is the difference between sucking and competing. Picks will continue to be devalued. Now you must make up the difference somewhere. That involves drafting very well, with limited picks, or hitting on UFAs. Remember, Malcolm Butler, and JC Jackson were both UFAs if memory serves.

  32. Buczilla Says:

If our plan is to tank for the first overall pick in 2023 then Gabbert is a great option.

  33. sasquatch Says:

I’m willing to give Gabbert a chance if Bruce is comfortable with him.

He did have eight head coaches and eight coordinators his first eight years, which is as un-advantageous a start to a career as anyone could imagine.

People decide who a player is, especially QBs, based on early impressions… which can be unfair to young QBs on teams without much talent or lack of continuity in coaching.

I’m not arguing for Gabbert, as I’d still rather see someone with documented success, but I do believe Arians knows QBs better than anyone writing or commenting on JBF. Arians is not Lovie Smith. Arians wants to wing the ball and score points and he knows what a QB looks like. Smith wanted to have a low risk, game manager who didn’t score many points. So, IMO, the Gabbert/Arians – McCown/Lovie comparison is horse shyte.

I think Gabbert, in this offense, could prove surprisingly competent. Won’t be a Pro-Bowl player, but he doesn’t really have to be. Find the open guys and let them make plays.

  34. zzbuc Says:

I preferr gabert than selling the house for Watson….When, legally, looks like dead man walking…

  35. Winny Testaverde Says:

I pride myself on being both a fair and judicious fella…so I give B Green “credit” for the well reasoned post. 👆🏻

Les is More Snead wore a “F the picks” shirt to the Super Bowl parade. He hung on for dear life not unlike Jason Licht over the years and things fell into place for a title. The Rams not having to go to Lambeau or face the Chiefs in the Super Bowl were just 2 of many, many good breaks. Same could be said about the Bucs in 2020 I suppose.

BA has a complete man crush on Gabbert…it’s obvious when you hear about him talk tight spirals/spinning the ball. Perhaps it’s also the full head of hair/lettuce.

BA has had a bad month…and pushing 70 may be the beginning of the wnd for him. I hate to say it…life comes at you fast.

  36. Niles Says:

    1. Brady is gone.
    2. We didn’t even reach the Super Bowl WITH BRADY last season.
    3. Next season the schedule is brutal.
    4. No quarterback – none – is going to take us to the Super Bowl.
    5. Use next season as the beginning of a new era.
    6. Start Trask with Gabbert as backup.
    7. How they perform dictates 2023 draft.

  37. Pewter941 Says:

    By all means. Sell him.

  38. cmurda Says:

If Bruce sticks with Blaine and is convinced that he is the way to go then I will start buying the Brady – BA friction. With that said, just like Tom being frustrated with the coaching staff, I’m not buying it. This is coach speak. B.A. looked like he was searching to say nice things about Blaine but he can’t possibly be dumb enough to believe he can get this team to the promised land. The window for this team even with the folks we will lose is within just a couple years. Can’t have some average at best QB while the time to win is now. Similarly, can’t have a young QB thrown into the fire. This isn’t rebuilding time.

  39. Buccaneric Says:

Lol @joe. Has 20 years between super bowls taught you nothing? It’s HARD to find a good QB.

Most teams need 10 years to do it. Let’s settle for a year of Tennessee level of success, ending on no major free agency holes, then grab a qb via a trade. Licht looks like a genius right now because he timed one QB’s promising end with one hell of a free agency acquisition when the roster was loaded.

I think we get Russel or Rodgers next year if trask doesn’t work out.

If he trades for a QB now Trask was a wasted pick.

I mean how would sell your job security?

  40. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Listnfrmafar

You made a great point that hasn’t been made…..all we hear is Trask learning from Brady….but what about Gabbert…..he was in a perfect position to learn a great deal….

And, 8 offensive coordinators in 8 years says more about the teams than the QB…..bad teams…

This would be the very best team Gabbert QBed for.

  41. Tuddy Time Says:

Glazers need to go all in and see what TB12 and GB would need to get one more year of play out of TB12. Do you give part ownership to TB12? His kids are home schooled, they can build a school at 1 buc place. Come on Glazers, you need to not leave us hanging! Show love towards TB12 and GB, and they will come back.

  42. cmurda Says:

    @Niles

    1) Yes, he’s gone

    2) That’s a suspect statement. We were tied with 30 seconds left to go with the eventual SB winners. That game could have gone either way. We were definitely SB material even after getting obliterated with injuries.

    3) So what

    4) BS

    5) No. This ERA is successful and there is a lot of talent. No thanks on moving on from success.

    6) Hell no. Never. Maybe Trask eventually starts. Blaine never ever starts a game unless there is no choice.

    7) That’s obvious. Every year is that way.

  43. Alanbucsfan Says:

Gabbert would throw 20 interceptions and get sacked 50 times – good for 7-10 record.

  44. SlyPirate Says:

THE ANSWER IS IN THE ECONOMICS

TB12 made money for the Glazers. Season tickets, prime time games, merch, etc. The Bucs organization broke sales records across the board.

Gab/Trask aren’t marketable. The Bucs will spend big (picks and players) if a marquis QB becomes available to keep cashflow alive.

  45. HC Grover Says:

Told Ya So! Bucconeers Ahoy! Shiver me timbers. Bucco Bruce strikes again!

  46. Dewey Selmon Says:

Gabbert can get us to 8-9 and that might win the division this year. NFCS is weak. Not saying he is going to win a SB, but he might just dumb luck his way into the playoffs if the defense and running game help him.

  47. HC Grover Says:

Just think of the fun. Cheap tix. Tailgate parties in the 3rd quarter. All the fun of the old days at the Sombrero. The only thing missing will be McKay quotes and Quips. Even ‘Throw Ariens in the Bay’. Scalpers almost giving away tickets before the games. EZ parking. It aint all that bad.

  48. Bqen green Says:

Winny, Ben is a slave to the scoreboard. The Rams did prove you can win, while treating first round picks as trade commodities, instead of a team building tool. Did the Rams get lucky with this approach? Ben would agree. But, every Superbowl winner needs luck, as you said. Ben hated the way the Rams built a championship team, but they’ve been to two Superbowls in four years and won one. Go look at the Seahawks horrid drafting the last five years. It’s why they’ve sucked recently. Had Seattle used the Rams model, they’d be in much better position. It’s true for the vast majority of the league. The cap is crap, and soon the draft will be too.

  49. EEK Says:

    Gabbert is a backup
No one actually believes that he will be anyone’s starting qb without calamitous injuries do they?

  50. Winny Testaverde Says:

On a day full of 2’s…I find myself agreeing twice with B. Green.

Picks used to be considered so sacred…almost blasphemous to trade away. And yet…with so many busts…there are instances to trade them for proven players.

Interesting that Aaron Donald was in the same draft class as Mike Evans. I remember wanting Donald outta Pitt…one Joe wanted Manzel ( yelp )…and you can’t argue with the Mike Evans selection for sure. But…

Seattle upset the football gods with that forced give away at the goal line in the Super Bowl loss to the Pats. They haven’t been the same since and lost their drafting touch ( fired tipsy savant Scott McC who picked most of the gems…not Schneider ).

What a fickle game/league…Bucs trending down yet again I hate to admit it.

  51. CChead Says:

If Glazers want to see a half empty stadium again. Gabbert is the man.

  52. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

No no no!!! If they go with Gabbert that tells me they are aiming for a high draft pick in 2023.

  53. Adrnagy Says:

    Glazers want SB and money.
Wilson will make more $$ to the glazers than trask.

So i understand that part and perhaps glazers have already signed off to get a top tier QB.

    Send trask , brate , 2 1st rd , 1 2nd rd , nelson. For wilson

  54. xdptoddx Says:

Bruce has said this about Gabbert before.

But it comes down to one thing:

If you were going to trust Bruce with Trubisky or whomever else they were looking at bringing in, wouldn’t that same trust necessarily have to also be extended to a decision to focus on Gabbert?

  55. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think it’s safe to assume that Joe doesn’t want Gabbert to start…..as most of us don’t.
So here’s the exercise we have to go through: And exhausting the possibilities one by one:

    Wilson or Gabbert
    Watson or Gabbert
    Rodgers or Gabbert
    Garrafolo or Gabbert
    Carr of Gabbert
    Wentz or Gabbert
    Cousins or Gabbert
    Murray or Gabbert

Now here is what is left:

    Trask or Gabbert

Dalton, Bridgewater, Flaco, Trubisky, Winston, Fitz, (et al)….or Gabbert

I think we may come down to the last two choices……sorry!

  56. Kalind Says:

No. And I don’t care if we have to sell the farm to get a quality guy. I do. Not. Care. Go get Rodgers. Go get Watson. Go make Seattle an offer they can’t refuse. Or play Trask this year w a promissory note that we’re gonna go hog wild next year after we get the first pick (cause playing Trask is a 3-13 season waiting to happen.)

  57. Your Mom Says:

McCown always reminded me of Butters from South Park. We nicknamed him Butters around my house.

  58. Bqen green Says:

    Hamburgers @Your Mom

  59. Rod Munch Says:

    LOL!

  60. allbuccedup Says:

Arians will bring Gabbert irregardless if we sign another QB. You will have Trask Gabbert and a free agent Wentz if he gets cut or maybe Old bears failure Trubisky. And Gabbert will end up on the practice squad. Because he sit out in 2019 because nobody wanted him for even a backup.

  61. Cho Says:

No, won’t happen. Let’s trust Licht. He drafted Tristan Wirfs, Antoine Winfield, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Ali Marpet, Devin White, Vita Vea. He’s not dumb.

He also knows what a winning QB can do. Team Glazer knows what a winning QB can do for the box office. If there’s absolutely no way of trading for an elite QB (Wilson, Rodgers, Watson (ugh)) or even a good one (Carr, Garappolo), they will start Trask, selling him as Brady’s understudy.

  62. Smoothbayrider Says:

Gabbert has all of the physical tools . Big , strong , mobile , with a cannon for an arm . He was definitely hindered by the teams he was on early in his career . If he does end up being our QB, I think he might surprise some people.

  63. lmao Says:

Dude is not even on the roster. STFU already. Bring back Jameis Winston over Blaine F%#$&$(ng Gabbert

  64. BFFL Says:

Im ok with Gabbert and Trask. Plus it’s gives way to Brady if he wants to return. Godwin is loyal he’ll return regardless of the QB. It’s not like Bucs have money for FAs anyway.

  65. steele Says:

Gabbert got his opportunity with the 49ers. Where he had plenty of support and a good D. Go watch those games. That’s what you get. Equal parts good and awful. (Trask, same thing, and even less evidence.)

  66. Mike Johnson Says:

I would start Jameis again before I would Gabbert.

  67. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

    Brady come back!
    Any kinda fool could see,
there was something in everything about you!

    Brady come back!
You can blame it all on the “D”.
Bowles was wrong & we just can’t live without you!

    B3,

    Pretty good one😀

  69. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Please Joe…..don’t let “Selling Blaine Gabbert” be your last article of the day!!!

  70. Hodad Says:

Ya’ll sound like a bunch of 6 year olds! Joe stumping his feet, no,no,no! Hold your breath till you turn blue Joe. The rest, just trade for this one, or that one. Wish it was that easy. At least you’re all getting off that river denial. Bunch of babies.

  71. Wild Bill Says:

The buc stops here. We be dead meat. Best free agents leave. No decent qb. Still stuck with low draft position. Hopeless. Depressing. Gonna sell my house and move to LA. Do the Bucs still have the creamsickle uniforms?

  72. HC Grover Says:

It will not be so bad. We may win a few. Each win will be SPECIAL.

  73. DBS Says:

Just think. Draft talk before Halloween. No meaningful games in January. , Exactly what you get with Gabbert.

  74. Bqen green Says:

Wild Bill, wait a spell. Don’t get them in trouble for something they haven’t fouled up yet. Ben knows it looks bleak, but they don’t need to suck overnight. That decision is directly upon ownership. Plenty of room to resign whoever they want, and a decent QB. Ben will predict this, whoever starts the season won’t last five games. maybe that’s what they’re after, cashing revenue checks and snapping fans necks

  75. HC Grover Says:

Hey let it all go and spend the money on football parties at Ray Jay. The tailgating will be awesome.

  76. David Says:

Stop it Bruce. No no no. Barely like him as a back up, time for Trask to be the back up.
Licht is not dumb enough to hand this team over to Gabbert

  77. JimbobBucsFan Says:

If things don’t go well this year we fans may well be watching a QB competition for starter among Blaine Gabbert, Kyle Trask and Mr-Second-Tier-Acquisition.

I see us having an outside shot at getting Deshaun Watson. However, I would not have predicted the coming of Tom Brady in a million years.

BA was lured out of retirement because he saw a realistic chance to get that elusive Lombardi. This he achieved within three years. Blow it out of your rectum, Bqen. (Where in the heck did you come from anyway? I don’t recall ever seeing your name here two or three years ago?)

  78. Cobraboy Says:

    Pats fan in 2000:

“It’s a good thing we have John Friez on the roster to back up Bledsoe. Because who wants to play the skinny geek Brady? He’s never thrown a pass in the NFL and has a noodle arm and no athleticism. I don’t want to turn the keys over to a poor rookie.”

  79. Cleanhouse Says:

Who cares- unless we get Brady, Rogers or maybe Russel Wilson- and sign some of our key guys, we have no chance- Rebuild time

  80. Cleanhouse Says:

I say rehire Ryan Griffin- always wanted to see him play
I’d also enjoy watching Jameis if he could get healthy

  81. Anonymous Says:

    How to win NFC South:

Trade Trade Brady’s Rights and his cap hit away now, Trade First Round Pick and other picks to get Watson, or trade a late 1sf get Cousins for less, Get Carr for Brady’s Rights, Get Jimmy G for a 2nd rounder and sign long term deal. Or sign a cut Wentz to a smaller deal.

    Resign these FA Player

    Chris Godwin (resign)
    Jason Pierre-Paul
Ryan Jensen (if possible and you have a good QB resign)
    Ndamukong Suh
Rob Gronkowski (let Gronk leave and play with Tom)
    William Gholston
Leonard Fournette (resign or sign other equivalent RB FA)
    O.J. Howard
    Blaine Gabbert
    Ronald Jones II
    Richard Sherman
    Aaron Stinnie
    Giovani Bernard
    Kevin Minter
    Steve McLendon
    Josh Wells
    Carlton Davis
    Andrew Adams
    Curtis Riley
    Pat O’Connor
    Alex Capps
    Jordan Whitehead (resign)

Sign some of the other mid to low cost FA is possible to return.

With a above average QB and Chris Fournette Evans and that Oline and younger defense they will win NFC South. And then playoffs are a gamble, very low chance of SB win but at least your team will be respectable post Brady.

  82. Bigz Says:

One thing the NFL gets right is backup QBs. Once you had a chance and bombed and relegated to backup, you are forever a backup..for good reason. Well, we’ll be drafting Stoud or Young next year.

  83. Bqen green Says:

Ben comes from his house Jimbob, where you coming from, space? That elusive Lombardi you speak of was won by Thomas Edward Brady, and in spite of ole ammonia brain. Had Tommy not graced the bucs with his presence Arians would be in shady acres by now. Show a little respect, for yourself and Ben

  84. catcard202 Says:

I’m sure the FO & Glazers want to sell everyone on “what’s behind door #2″…& Gabbert / Trask combo would only be plan B…But Plan B will be what the Bucs end up with. Prepare yourselves now for that eventual outcome.

Nobody cared three years ago, you sucked!!!! Ben came to enlightened and to pardon the stupid, much like Brady’s Christ like arrival in Tampa. Like the goat, Ben is only renting here. Once y’all go back to 5-12, Ben will ascend, having forgiven the original sin of almost destroying Steve Young. Only then will the bucs find peace.

  86. Adrnagy Says:

Imo. If trade for QB is wilson over watson.
    Wilson is ready. No drama.
    Wilson has exp

No jimmy. No cousins no tannehill

  87. Anonymous Says:

Maybe he had 8 head coaches in 8 years because he sucked so bad he kept getting the coach fired.

  88. Bucwatchingnut Says:

Part of the problem is our press glorified BA and his laughable “Quarterback Whispering Genius” to such a degree that they failed to see how incompetent his football strategy actually is. The no-riskit no-biscuit philosophy was forced down Tom Brady’s throat until he seemly talked some sense into the organization after last year’s bi-week.
Because of BA and his gun slinging DC Bowls we’ve alienated the greatest quarterback in history and will completely lose any serious chance of getting anywhere near the super bowl. I’m stunned that BA has more influence on the organization and not the other way around. It’s too bad that is Brady and not Bruce Arians that’s leaving. I fear we’re going to be treated to the greatest clown show on earth next year.

  89. Steven007 Says:

Ben, sorry Bqen or whatever you go by these days, we appreciate your honesty. And letting us know how fair weather you are. Those of us who have been fans of the team for a long time actually know what fandom is. If I stop being a fan when my team had a losing record I wouldn’t be one. Were you a fan of the pats before Brady? Pretty ugly history for the most part. And oh by the way, we won a super bowl without Tom terrific. Did you know that? And we were a pretty competitive team from the late ’90s to the early 2000s. So this wasn’t simply a mirage. Clearly it was a confluence of right time right place. Tom gets a tremendous amount of credit for that. Of course he couldn’t have done it without the team. And he knew that. Ultimate team guy. He would appreciate fans like us. Not so much the bandwagoners I wouldn’t think.

Since 1999: The 30 most successful QBs were taken in the first 36 picks are:

    Steve McNair 3 Lost SB
    Donovan Mcnabb 2 Lost SB
    Daunte Culpepper 11
    Carson Palmer 1
    Matt Ryan 3 Lost SB
    Joe Flacco 11 SB
    Mathew Stafford 1 SB
    Philip Rivers 4
    Chad Penington 18
    Cam Newton 1 Lost SB
    Michael Vick 1
    Ben Roethlisberger 11 SB
    Alex Smith 1
    Aaron Rodgers 24 SB
    Drew Brees 32 SB
    Peyton Manning 1 SB
    Andrew Luck 1
    Eli Manning 1 SB
    Derek Carr 36
    Patrick Mahomes 10 SB
    Deshaun Watson 12
    Josh Allen 7
    Kyler Murray 1
    Lamar Jackson 32
    Joe Burrow 1 Lost SB
    Justin Herbert 6
    Jarod Geoff 1 Lost SB
    Colin Kaepernick 36 Lost SB
    Brad Johnson 9 SB
    Trent Difler 6 SB

In general x<30% of first round QBs hit as long term franchise successes

The 8 most successful QBs in that 1999-2021 era that came from the late rounds or where undrafted gems include 3 SB winners.

    Tony Romo (undrafted)
    Jimmy Garropollo 62 Lost SB
    Dak Prescott 135
    Kurt Warner (undrafted) SB
    Russell Wilson 75 SB
    Tom Brady 199 SB
    Kirk Cousins 102
    Matt Hasselback 187 Lost SB

Only Russel Wilson and Tom Brady in the modern NFL era (drafted since 2000) have maintained long term playoff success as QB coming from the late rounds.

Very few if any quarterbacks once given the chance to start multiple seasons and they still fail to win, ever go on to then become very successful later in their careers, as is common with many high draft rookie QB busts

  91. SOEbuc Says:

Trask. Gabbert is garbage. Arians time is limited with the Bucs. See if Trask is legit and it will at least be starter experience backup when we get a new HC and QB.

I think about those coaches between Gruden and Arians. Scary. Gotta find another good coach HC and squad.

  92. View from 132 Says:

I’ll watch Gabbett if Deshaun Watson needs the year off before taking over.

  93. LakelandSteve Says:

The Bucs/Arians are singing Gabberts praises because probably the teams with QB’s we would want are asking more than we are willing to pay. This team is not going to find a free agent QB to take us to the promised land. They are trying to get us used to the idea of Gabbert and Trask. Anonymous is right though, say good bye to a lot of our free agents without a QB who is proven. They will go somewhere where they think there is a possibility of winning a Super Bowl. With Gabbert or Trask at the helm the Super Bowl possibilities are slim and none.

  94. Ben green Says:

Steven, Ben never pretended to be a bucs fan, just an observer and interested party. Ben grew up on the mean streets of Lynn, so he knows a little about hardscrabble. To answer your question yes Ben is quite old enough to remember the Patriots without Brady, and yes Ben was a fan. You’ve melted Ben’s cold dead heart, forcing him to realize those painful times. Maybe y’all aren’t so different. Maybe y’all’s just fans, like Ben. Forget that. Ben will be cold in the ground before he recognizes a franchise that nearly drove Steve young into law practice, and drove away the greatest quarterback of all time away in two short seasons. Y’all had it all, and mucked it up

    Including great weather!!!

  96. adam from ny Says:

yeah i was going to post something about this the other day…

my take was sorta like joes…

rolling with gabbert is like going into the season with one of the mckown brothers as your qb…

to go from TB12 to that is just going to emphasize that it was all TB12’s doing, as the bucs would go plummeting in the standings, and sadly enough in front of an empty stadium to boot…

they would literally toss every bit of new culture that was built here into the dumpster…and that’s how you trash a franchise…

i’d be shocked but it is possible to toss the entire franchise in the garbage can overnight, or continue on the path as a semblance of the new america’s team…

the ball is in the glazer’s court, and at this juncture it can go either way…but let’s be honest, they’ve been really steering the ship in the right direction for a few years now…i’m gonna put faith in them here – for now – because they’ve been straight killin’ it from an ownership standpoint of late, and turned the little team by the bay into a top flight nfl franchise………….for now

  97. adam from ny Says:

the one positive thing about gabbert is even tho a vet, he too has been sitting behind brady and learning how the goat works…

so he too has been “brady-ized”…

but… i still say go get a proven number one qb and try to roll with it…

yeah keep gabbert as number 2, because you never know, qb’s go down – maybe gabbert comes in as injury relief or because of basic qb struggles and impresses…

furthermore, maybe at that point he gets a chance to be a jim plunkett type…

but in a situation like that, you go with the flow as i mentioned above, and then if the stars align for gabbert then they align…

sometime you’ve gotta just leave things in the hands of the man upstairs and see how it plays out…

blaine might need to have some divine intervention at this point in his career…

imagine a crazy scenario where trask is anointed starter goes 2-4 thru first 6 games, gets pulled, gabbert comes in and goes 7-4 down the stretch as we eek out the divison title at 9-8 over the
    8-9 falcons and 8-9 saints

  98. Jay Bee Says:

Bridgewater will come in and the three of them will fight it out.
