Report: Byron Leftwich Telling Jaguars He’s Out

February 3rd, 2022

Offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich

UPDATED – You can’t say someone didn’t hire you if call them up and tell them not to.

It seems that’s what’s happening with Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich in Jacksonville.

Florida Times-Union reporter John Reid‘s new story popped in Joe’s email and noted that Leftwich has or will remove himself from consideration for the Jaguars’ head coaching job. The Jaguars interviewed Leftwich twice and supposedly he was their candidate, but then unsourced reports surfaced that Leftwich didn’t want to work for Jaguars personnel chief Trent Baalke.

Early today, NFL Network reported that former Vikings GM Rick Spielman might take over the Jags and bring former Eagles Super Bowl-winning coach Doug Pederson with him.

It seems Leftwich responded by throwing in the towel on the potential opportunity.

As Reid noted, it’s not going over well among the Jaguars faithful.

Earlier this week, former Jaguars offensive guard Uche Nwaneri, who played seven seasons with the franchise and a former fifth-round pick in the 2007 draft, expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction of the search and accused Baalke of trying to sabotage Leftwich.

”Word on the street is Baalke is actively trying to sabotage Byron Leftwich because BL does not want TB and of course, Baalke is part of the decision making,” Nwaneri posted in a Tweet Monday morning. ”Doesn’t surprise me one bit. If Shad Khan ends up skipping on Byron, will only confirm he should sell the Jags.”

Joe suspects Leftwich has no other head coach offers, otherwise he would publicly stay in the running for the Jags job in order to maintain leverage in contract negotiations with another team.

Welcome back, Byron, even though you never left.

UPDATE: Former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson is the Jaguars’ new head coach.

  1. Pewter Power Says:

Let’s see what kind of offensive ranking we have this year without Winston or Brady

  2. BucsFan81 Says:

Good just means we will have the whole coaching staff back. Exactly what I have been saying on other articles Jaguars are hot garbage and the owner is an idiot.

  3. SKBucsFan Says:

That’s too bad. Was looking forward to him taking Bowles with him.

  4. xdptoddx Says:

I just hope he’s the GUY when Arians retires and that he’s got a very successful reign for years to come.

  5. Listen Linda! Says:

    Your day will come BL.

  6. Tony Says:

Actually we can bring Brady out of retirement to where Giselle can still be there with him. Brady can come back & play keep the son as the ballboy & MAKE GISELLE ONE OF THE CHEERLEADERS!😀

  7. steele Says:

Carson Strong might be available in rd 2. Arguably the best passer in the draft, but serious mobility problems.

  8. Dapostman Says:

    ugh!!!!

  9. Darin Says:

My guess is Leftwich was out when he kept describing players by saying “He do what he do”.

  10. BA4President Says:

One season without a Super Bowl win and the haters are in full force. It’s kind of pathetic

  11. NeverGIVEup Says:

BL does not market well. He will turn more away than he will attract. Has NOTHING to do with his skin color.
HAS EVERYTHING to do with his inability to speak and presents as a leader.

There are plenty of BLACK men that could coach IF they really wanted to.

You don’t get a participation promotion just cause your skin color

  12. Bucs Guy Says:

Too bad, I wanted the 3rd rd picks.

  13. NeverGIVEup Says:

I had another post prior. Previous one don’t make sense without the previous one.

    Either way.

How about “Rah” Morris gets an interview. Whats up with that?

  14. steele Says:

Here’s an angle no one has considered yet. If Denver makes a play for Rodgers, Wilson, even Jittery G, what about Drew Lock? A bigtime talent coming out of college, has all the tools, but Denver’s coaches kept trying to alter his style (away from his strengths), and when Fangio showed up, he hated Lock and put Bridgewater in.

Essentially, Lock is waiting and believes he’s worthy to be an NFL starter. Denver’s making noise about getting someone else, which means Lock is still in limbo.

I don’t think it would be terrible to reload or rebuild around guys like Lock or Trask, when your other veteran options are so poor and the next two drafts are bad.

  15. MadMax Says:

Welp, we’re gonna be a train wreck for a while without Brady approving or changing the calls. I know its hard being an OC and Byron has been blessed with talent but he needs more creativity.

  16. Bojim Says:

Good for you BL. Now stop running up the middle on first down.

  17. IrishTony Says:

I would like to see Leftwich take over the reigns as Bucs head coach. I want to see more successful African American coaches in the NFL particularly in the wake of the Flores law suit.

  18. IrishTony Says:

Brady raved about BL. It’ll be interesting what he does with the next QB particularly if he’s not a “scheme fit” (Garropolo?).

  19. adam from ny Says:

what if we bring fitzy back in here ???

  20. Todd Says:

I think he is the guy who replaces arians when he retires

  21. Gunnin4Ya Says:

Dude…Tony you are so cool. Who the h3ll wouldn’t want her as a cheerleader!?! Although it doesn’t a yummy TE pay her usual runway show rate, that’s quite a bit higher back in the day.

  22. Gunnin4Ya Says:

    Autocorrect wtf

Doesn’t pay her usual runway show rate

  23. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Good. No excuses when the Buc coaches get exposed this season. Will make it easy to blow them out and truly start the rebuild with coaches that are willing to put in the work.

  24. Adrnagy Says:

Hold up … lefty telling jags hes out ? Or jags telling him no way ??

  25. SB Says:

LOL anyone should know that it is the other way around.

Also I would love for Lock to come here and get beat out by Trask.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Happy for Bowles man. Im betting he knows thats a awful job and an uphill battle.

He is young enough not to ruin his career before it ever starts. Hes got a great gig here and this maybe his eventual destination for HC.

If Jacksonville would of worked with him and set things up the way he needed he might be signing right now. Great idea for him to not jump at the first job offer.

  27. Mike Johnson Says:

OK. So, the owner was not going to hire him anyway. But great for him. I;m tellin ya all that owner in Jville? OK..Ill just leave it alone. Byron sees the madness. Good for him. I just feel sorry for Lawrence.

  28. JimmyJack Says:

ProudBucsFan get off the hard stuff dude. What kind of sick twisted demented fan wants to blow up coaching staff that took us from a Mickey Mouse franshice to contenders and SB Champions?

The actual plan is trying to keep this group together. Byron is a huge part too. So long as hes here the Biscuit offense will stay and thrive!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  29. T REX Says:

We are screwed if he stays here.

    He is awful.

  30. T REX Says:

@jimmyjack – wth??? BRADY won us a super bowl. LOL. This staff was losers before Brady and I’ll wager any amount they will be losers again. Bet???

  31. NeverGIVEup Says:

Is the Jags owner even American? I don’t claim him as white. He is more like one of those fools that flew a plain into a building. AND if you believe that happened than God help you.

However, if you don’t believe that happened than you have to know this is all just “A Rich Mans Game”.

JFK was shot by a white man. WE ARE NOT IN A RACE WAR.

Still waiting on the definition of “race”.

  32. BuccoBDub Says:

Real talk: BL sounds like an ignant mushmouthded unedumacated street kid when he opens his mouf. Sure that works great with the locker room buuuuut the suits might want their HC to sound, I don’t know, like he participated in more years of school than he can count with his fingers.

  33. D-Rome Says:

He made the right decision. That team is a dumpster fire.

  34. Jerry Says:

Trent Baalke is the guy who was with the 49ers and started fighting with Jim Harbaugh, chased him away, and then blew up the roster. Now he’s been with Jacksonville since 2017 and its been a circus.

I don’t blame Leftwich. Baalke is a clown. Everywhere he goes there is a problem.

  35. Ash Says:

Lol nah just like it wasn’t just belichick or just Brady it was the combination for success because that’s how team sports work it takes a team including coaches. I’m glad he is back I think he is a good coach does he make all the right calls all the time of course not no coach does. Bucs won a Superbowl and made the playoffs after all the injuries and people are ready to fire everyone because they didn’t win it again? Just insane. Go bucs

  36. Old Sombrero Says:

I live in Jax. It’s a mess up here. Losing Leftwich was going to suck but I really think he could’ve turned this awful franchise around. He saved himself a whole lot of angst by removing himself. And the Bucs benefit.

  37. JimmyJack Says:

TRex your comment is so simple minded your basically not even in reality.

Your take is so bad I cant even believe you watched us play last year. But let me clue you in to a few players not named Tom Brady who had monumental impacts in our SB run. Sean Bunting, JPP, Devin White, Shaq Barrett, Whitehead, Windield, Scotty, Fournette…….Any decent Buc fan should remember huge game changing splash plays by each player I just listed. Its disgusting for any fan to give credit to only one person. Think you got the wrong sport dude.

Oh and on defense it was all orchestrated by Bowles.

Of course Brady was the biggest part. Nobody will deny that. It comes with the position. But you should know it was not just Brady. Gronkowski was also a key factor.

  38. NeverGIVEup Says:

We pay homage for an entire month to the what the original blacks had too indoor inorder for there children and there childrens children to be able to live in a FREE country.

Last I checked, whites and blacks fought side by side to SECURE FREEDOM from the CROWN.

If push comes to shove. WE THE PEOPLE will fight SIDE BY SIDE to SECURE FREEDOM for ALL, so that we can just PLAY Fu ck ing FOOTBALL

    GERRR

As if Gambiling is not ruining my Sundays. Now I am suppose to be ashamed to watch that game that I love. I can no longer enjoy BLACK MEN succeeding and making me feel like a champ even though I am a fat fu ck.

  39. New England Patriots Fan Says:

The media rumour is BL requested Trent Blaake be fired, and replaced in order for him to work there. While I agree the Jaguars have 2 star talents and 51 players whom would back up on most other teams. So the GM is very bad beyond drafting Lawrence and a having a decent kicker/punter. But it makes it hard to get hired when one of the chief people hiring you in the meeting, you request be fired in order to work there. Placed the owner Khan is in a horrible situation.

  40. NeverGIVEup Says:

And if you think I am talking to myself. Just wait for the hot takes and talking points to come.

BL is about to get tied into all the so called White Suprem talk in the NFL.

You know the league that white men built and have employed and offered black men the opportunity to make mega millions in.

For crying out loud. If you just let thing progress naturally at the rate it has been progressing. Black MEN will OWN the league. Is it REALLY that hard to see?

    LIVE AND LET LIVE

  41. New England Patriots Fan Says:

This team will be fine if you trade for Jimmy. I know many hate the guy because of his ceiling, but as another Patriots product I really liked him for years. Also before 2021 draft Bill attempted to trade for Jimmy instead of drafting MacJones but he only wanted to give a 2. Jimmy with a strong roster can win the NFC south

  42. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Jaguars hire former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson for vacant position

  43. Adrnagy Says:

Leftwich is young. Doug pederson last chance to be HC. Bowles will not get a HC again.
Its harder for a DC than OC to get a second chance. The best chance for bowles is to stack our defense and push arians out.

  44. JimmyJack Says:

Theres some JimmyG rumors floating around but its gotta be all hogwash. He dont fit in this offense. He dont sling the ball from the pocket, he dont attack downfield. Hes probably not even on the Bucs radar. Why would they chage the whole offense for a new QB? Makes no sence. If they are getting a new QB itll be somebody who can run the same offense that the rest of the team has been running for 3 years.

Same thing as last year. We had all these Teddy rumors. I seriously doubt they were ever realistic………They say the agents like to get the players names out there. Thats probably all these rumors are. Teams hear talks that the Bucs #1 offense likes Jimmy G other teams start perking their ears up.

  45. LakelandSteve Says:

This may be Arians last year as head coach. It’s good that Leftwich and Bowles came back because one of them would probably move into Head coaching duties. That means offense and defensive schemes would stay the same.

  46. Swampbuc Says:

    Todd.Bowels.

    42 seconds.

    Cooper Kupp Uncovered.

    Lose.

    That’s a fine haiku.

  47. Cobraboy Says:

    Pedersen > Leftwich

    End of story.

  48. coupe1647@icloud.com Says:

So , Bucci has his merry men back for next season !! Aren’t we the lucky ones ??

  49. SB Says:

@NeverGIVEup. I will see your call and raise you this.
We only dedicate one day to remember our fallen soldiers
The men and women who died young
But if you come out the closet as Caitlyn Jenner
You’re a hero and you get a whole Pride month

  50. SB Says:

It would be a fine haiku Swamp but it is missing 3 syllables.

  51. David Says:

He’ll get his chance in a couple years when he’s more ready. Right now, I am extremely happy he is back. Stability in the coaching staff is going to go a long long long way. Keeping the OC who oversaw the greatest two-year offensive output in Buccaneer history will go a long way.
Yes he had Brady and now he won’t but it isn’t like he hasn’t progressed and learned anything. He’s only getting better

  52. David Says:

    Cobraboy
😂 Anyone who throws out an OINION and then yells “end of story!” to shut the conversation down… Just proved their argument is absolutely worthless

  53. David Says:

If we keep BA and Bowles and BL that will be fantastic. Stability in the top coaching positions will go a long way to keeping the team together and productive. Of course there are the haters out there that think nothing can be done without Brady, they’re of course completely ignorant to actual football. This is the best coaching staff the Buccaneers have ever had

  54. Anonymous Says:

Leftwich has had one year without Brady or Winston.

#32 offense in the NFL that one year.

  55. Anonymous Says:

I guess the coaches must really believe that the Bucs are going to get a legit QB option and keep the team together, otherwise they’d be jumping ship right now. Leftwich, in particular, has zero to gain — I don’t care if you like the GM or not, you take that guaranteed 5yr/$25mil contract, then again he’s a former 1st round pick and probably isn’t hard up for money. Still puzzling why he wouldn’t jump at any job, knowing all of his success has been under BA, with Winston and Brady. His one year without Winston or Brady, he had the #32 offense in the NFL.

With that said, the speculation has always been that Bowles would take over for Arians, you do wonder if Leftwich got the nod instead.

  56. Swampbuc Says:

Joe Namath looks pretty good, and he’s quit drinking and probably still wants to kiss Suzy Kolber. Wheel his arthritis medicated arse out there.

  57. SB Says:

Hey Swamp……..Maybe if he isn’t too busy at Golden Corral we can Lure Shaun King off the couch.

  58. Bucs Guy Says:

BL pulled out because he knew he wasn’t getting the job. Too bad because I wanted the 3rd round picks.

  59. Bruce Blahak Says:

No Brady hopefully kills the empty backfields on 2nd and 2. Play action and a run game needs more attention now.

  60. Hodad Says:

I don’t see Arains hanging around past this year. If BL can do something with Gabbert, and Trask this year, I’m sure the Glazers would want him to be the next HC to keep the offense going.

  61. DaBux Says:

Byron needs to take over the Bucs after BA retires. That much is obvious.

  62. Doctor Stroud Says:

The sports talk radio folks in Jax are saying that Tom Brady called Shad Khad to tell him to hire Leftwich. That didn’t even work and tells you all you need to know about that doomed franchise.

  63. SB~LV Says:

    Lol… “ you are fired”
    No … “ I quit! “

  64. Bobby M. Says:

Pederson went to SB and playoffs with Wentz, Foles and saw the potential in Hurts……waaaaay more accomplished than anything Leftwich has done on his own. Great pick up for Lawrence, not sure its great for us.

  65. mark2001 Says:

Think the Jacksonville interview was just the Rooney rule playing out. Two Black HCs currently, with Tomlin likely nearing the end of the line with the end of the Big Ben era and Lynn in Houston… a disfunctional organization with a likely coaching carousel. You can have all the Rooney rules you want… but the truth is pretty clear. The Bucs organization has been a shining light in the proverbial darkness of the reality of the situation.

  66. mark2001 Says:

Excuse me…sounds like Tomlin is the last one standing.

  67. DungyDance Says:

It’s pretty much official now. We’re stuck with Byron Leftover. Remember how Techmo Bowl had only 4 plays you could pick from?

  68. allbuccedup Says:

He was never really in, Rooney rule.

  69. Listnfrmafar Says:

The Rooney rule killed the Bucs playoffs. Bowles already proofed he was never HC material and what has Leftwich ever done without Brady, unfortunately that’s not a package deal. TB12 pumped him up because he stayed out of his way. It has nothing to do with color they both just are average at best.

  70. T REX Says:

@ jimmijack – all those players are replaceable. Are we super bowl contenders without Brady? Yes or no? With Brady you could lose any of those guys and still be a SB contender. Give me a break. You think it was anyone else but Brady that made us contenders? ANd who brought in Gronk? LOL. You idiots look dumber and dumber. The team is a loser without Brady. 5-12

  71. Bosch Says:

A Bowels movement is still in order. Perhaps the Glazers need a laxative.

  72. Cobraboy Says:

@casual fan David: Make your cases that-

    1) Leftwich is a better HC selection than Pedersen, and

    2) Why any discussion should continue after the Jags hire Pedersen

    3) Why a casual fan opinion is worth more than the contents of a full spittoon bucket.

  73. Cobraboy Says:

@Listn: I am hardly a Leftwich fan, but he did guide ATM to a 5000yd. season and is not responsible for ATM’s 30 picks.

I, for one, do not fully buy into the narrative that Arians was completely hands-off in O play design, concepts, or game planning.

    It’s Arian’s O, but Bowles D.

IMO, Bowles is by far the better HC candidate.

  74. Scooter Says:

” Word on the Street “. WOW. What a solid source of validity.

  75. Listnfrmafar Says:

Cobraboy, if your offense is NO Risk it No Biscuit passing yards are inevitable as well as ints. How can you give BL credit for the completions and not the ints? They are his plays. It’s the end result 7-9 not yards that’s just reaching. BA admitted he doesn’t get involved in the game plan. Now he’s either lying AGAIN and doesn’t want to be accountable if things go south or he is involved? I can only go by what the old man says.

  76. Cobraboy Says:

@Listin: because Leftwich did not throw the ball, ATM did.

He can call a solid play, but the QB is the one ultimately responsible for throwing the ball.

    That’s why.

Two years of Brady and my game day stomach ulcers finally healed.

It’s clear you never played football at any higher level, just another casual fan.

  77. allbuccedup Says:

Brady had 5 fourth quarter comeback wins this past year. We are going to miss that this year.

  78. crazybucs_CL Says:

…and yet despite your expert opinion he was a top college football player, a top 10 draft pick, a winning professional Quaterback, a Super Bowl wing coach, and has made millions at the top of his chosen profession. Most importantly you know his name and are investing time critiquing his weaknesses while he doesn’t even know you exist. I wonder if you line his accomplishments up against his detractors how you measure up.
