Matt Cassel Offers Services To Bucs

February 4th, 2022

Former Tom Brady backup wants work with Bucs.

In the past couple of days, this got Joe thinking: In the wake of the Tom Brady retirement, how many agents have reached out to Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to gauge the temperature of their quarterbacks playing for a talented team like the Bucs?

Joe is guessing there are a few NFL starters and several wannabes who would love to improve their careers with a playoff team in Tampa Bay. And, oh yeah, make some extra scratch along the way.

So Joe got a chuckle yesterday morning when a news director of a Milwaukee TV station Joe texts with (he’s a monster Bucs fan from St. Petersburg) reached out with the following item.

The problem with this is that Cassel, after he left the Belicheats, was mostly dreadful.

While Cassel was 10-5 in starts for the Belicheats in 2008 when Brady blew out his knee, it all went downhill from there for Cassel. With the exception of leading the Chiefs to the playoffs in 2010 and one Pro Bowl season, Cassel played some awful football.

Hey, compared to Brady, Cassel is still young (39). And Joe would take him over slop like Gardner Minshew in a heartbeat. If Cassel is looking for a comeback with the Bucs touting how he played replacing Brady when Brady got hurt, well, Joe has heard worse sales pitches.

Hope everyone had their sarcasm meter turned on.

I would much rather the Mitch Trubisky or Andy Dalton suggestions come true than Cassel…

  2. David Says:

I’d rather take my chances with Kyle Trask

  3. SB Says:

Yup David. But they have to bring in vets for him to beat out. Pretty sure he would have Cassel in the bag and by the end of pre-season he would have Bridgewater or Trubisky on the pine as well.

  4. Pewter Power Says:

Guys like josh Allen, patrick mahomes and Lamar Jackson are household names but apparently people forget what was being said about them coming out of the combine. People were trying to make Jackson a wide receiver. Kyle trask is not these guys but no one knows what he is after being able to devote all his attention to football not school. If mike glennon can step in and have people believe in him for god only knows why then Kyle trask should be able to battle it out with Blaine and another free agent. There is not savior coming to help like Brady the options just aren’t out there

  5. Swampbuc Says:

I hear Sonny Jurgenson is ready to make a comeback.

    42 seconds……Cooper Kupp……..naa.

  6. SB Says:

    STOP IT JOE!!!!!!!!
    Cassel over Minshew?!?!?!

Dude. I had more respect for you.
Cassel in his absolute prime maybe.

    Cassel 104 TDs to 82 Ints in 14 yrs with a comp% of 58.8.
Minshew 41 TDs to 12 ints in 3 yrs with a comp% of 36.2. On WAY sh!ttier teams.
Since you are not a math guy do you want me to extrapolate those figures for you?
I think you secretly don’t like mustaches. 🤐

  7. SB Says:

    ***63.2***
    Damn old fingers

  8. Mikejp Says:

He added 5 losses after replacing Tom. He would add additional 4 losses for the Bucs. Will it be good enough to be a playoff team. This Cassel is losing his mind!

  9. Adrnagy Says:

Joe … check tony romo. Hes ripped and ready.

  10. Adrnagy Says:

With soo many pro bowl players on the roster. Hes ready to sacrifice family time for a ring.

  11. Adrnagy Says:

Can arians play QB after he recovers from Achilles.

  12. Swampbuc Says:

Breaking news — Todd’s Bowel watched an uncut version of the movie “We’re the Millers” and got the playcalls for his last defensive series against the Rams from the scene where Kenny was going to — um — “engage” with the Gay Mexican motorcycle cop. Which is poetic, since the Gay kicker made the winning FG for the second time in two tries against his former team.

Use a bottle cap, a cigarette butt, and a pebble. That’s all you need to let Cooper Kupp run wide open at the most critical time of the game.

  13. steele Says:

In his prime, Cassel was on par with Jittery G. Very similar level.

  14. adam from ny Says:

    maybe fitzie

  15. steele Says:

The sensible and cost effective option is go with Trask, and keep expectations low for two seasons. If the goal is playoffs, to have a veteran QB who is solid, and not a perennial mediocrity or a loser, the choices are extremely limited, and involve a trade. We know about Russell Wilson and Rodgers, pro and con.

Here are a few more than aren’t getting as much attention:

-Kirk Cousins. The cost would be high, something like a high draft pick and more. But Cousins is solid, if not exciting. He hasn’t taken teams to the promised land either, but he doesn’t consistently collapse or disappoint the way others do.

-Matt Ryan. He’s got one year left on his contract. Maybe the Falcons would consider moving him sooner.

-Drew Lock. If the Denver Donks pursue Rodgers, Wilson, etc. As I posted in another thread, a QB with all the tools and worthy of a starting job, who hasn’t been coached well, and pushed aside for T Bridgewater by Fangio, a dumb move.

-Trubisky. Okay, he’s on the long list of not great FAs, didn’t succeed in Chicago, but does he deserve another look? He was hardly used by the Bills, who went with Josh Allen, so he’s being wasted as a backup. Like D Lock, someone who can start.

  16. steele Says:

I’m looking at tape of Kenny Pickett and Matt Corral, probably the two top QBs in this draft. They’re not bad. Pickett is going first round, anywhere from top 15 to 20. Corral, lower, and gettable.

  17. steele Says:

Keep eyes on the Senior Bowl, guys. The Bucs are among the first two to have met with Kenny Pickett, so he’s on the radar. He’s going to be coveted by many teams.

    …………

UM. put some glasses on. If Trask were on the board this yr vs. last he would be the first QB off the board.
Do you even watch football or just BSPN?

  19. SB Says:

    LOLOLOLOL. Kenny Pickett!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
    5 YEARS AS A STARTER……81 TDS to 32 Picks
    Trask
    20 GAMES 69 TDs to 15 picks!

    Do you even lift bro?

  20. Bucs Guy Says:

Pickett and Corral are both gone by pick #15 in the first round. Washington, Lions, Panthers, Texans and Steelers are looking to draft/trade for a QB. Vikings, Broncos, Packers, Seahawks, Raiders and Falcons will need someone if they trade their QB or lose them to FA. Others on the fence are Colts, Giants, Eagles and Titans.

  21. Bucs Guy Says:

Maybe not Packers if they go with Joke Love

  22. Red86 Says:

He can join the Bucs on Madden.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Our Supermodel girlfriend has left us for good… now it’s back slumming it at the Neon Cowboy.

This is our life going forward.

  24. Darin Says:

All you Trask lovers dont need to defend him. If he’s good enough he’ll play. The same criticisms were made of Brady decades ago. Then he rewrote it. We’ll find out

  25. DarenGibo Says:

Yes! Let’s bring in Tony Romo at QB!! Do i think he still has what it takes to lead Tampa to the Super Bowl? HELL NO!

BUT, it would finally get his voice off my TV every week!

  26. Listnfrmafar Says:

Why not go after Trevor Simeon, we all saw how good he is. (sarcasm meter) another great Bowles accomplishment. Jacksonville hired Doug Peterson, no surprise.

  27. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

I don’t doubt you would take him over Gardner, but I’d rather start Trask than Matt Castle.

  28. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Man how quickly fans forget how hard it is to assess the potential of ANY rookie (or “redshirt”) quarterback. Jameis Winston was the first pick, Josh Freeman was the seventeenth pick, and Tom Brady was the one hundred and ninety-ninth pick (6th round) of their respective drafts.

  29. Swampbuc Says:

    Trashk.

    (facepalm)

  30. MadMax Says:

If we’re going to draft a QB, get Sam Howell if he’s still there or move up a few spots for him.

  31. Bqen green Says:

Don’t forget that Matty was playing with a loaded roster in 08. They lost to basically every playoff team that year. Those losses were directly attributed to Matty. He had reigns like a horse. that won’t happen in ole ammonia brain’s offense, quite the opposite. Any QB under the thumb of Arians always has the chance to set the single game, and season record for interceptions

  32. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Just go with what we got.

  33. Mr. B Says:

    Roman Gabriel is still alive!

  34. DrunkInYbor Says:

I don’t see BUCS drafting another QB this year. Glazers like to make a splash. So it’s either going to Trask, vet QB, or a trade for a upper elite QB. Personally I think David Carr would be a great fit plus he’s a tough son of a gun I love that. I haven’t done any research on his contract so this is just blind conjecture and wish sandwiches.
