man thats a tough decision, but our best CB needs to be kept. Whitehead is a beast though. I would keep them both and trade Shaq if possible, ….have to let Suh go at his age etc.
If Trask was worth his draft place, we need to play him. If he is going to rise into a player, now is the time. Pushing him aside with another free agent,= might ruin him.
The Bucs need to use what money they have to sign our own crop of free agents, and the draft for everything else.
Wow pretty close. I picked Whitehead because the dude is a baller and is the hardest hitter on the team. He sets the tone and you need guys like that on the roster. I hope we can keep both though.
The overwhelming pick should be Davis. He is a top 7 cornerback in the NFL. He consistently shuts down opposing teams receivers matched up on him. Whitehead is great because he makes splash plays with a big hit and is great at stopping the run, and I hope they can keep him, but he’s average in coverage
Davis does not come near any lind of big contract. We have seen the oft injured Davis do well at times, but other times like falling down and Devante Adams waliking in for a Td, and just over all, he does not inspire confidence. Have seen him get burned way to much. The Ram game he got embarrassed again.
So Sign Whitehead, better value, yes been hurt some, but he is a better safety than Davis is a CB.
Both are injury prone, but if healthy, Whitehead is a top 10 safety. Is Davis even top 20 at his position? I think that paying Davis as a top corner would be a huge mistake and he’s not worth the franchise tag. I’d put a second round tender on him and see if any team bites.
Personally think you’re asking the wrong question Joe. Davis has a Market Value of $19.7 mil based on a 5-yr contract (he made $1.1 mil last season). Whitehead has a Market Value of $7.9 mil based a a 3-yr contract (he made $0.8 mil last season). You’re comparing apples & oranges.
Not comparing apples and oranges. Fans are aware of the relative value of the positions and the players at the positions. The question is clear. Not implying that they are equal commodities. Also, Joe does not buy the market values you mentioned. –Joe
Chris Godwin has a Market Value of $18.2 mil based on a 5-yr contract (he made $16.0 mil last season with the Franchise Tag). Seriously doubt that the Bucs will be able to afford BOTH Godwin AND Davis PLUS all the other FAs we NEED to field a competitive team (and that’s IF we start Trask instead of going out & signing a high-priced veteran QB).
So THAT’S almost an apples-to-apples question: ‘Who would you rather we re-sign in free agency: Chris Godwin or Carlton Davis?’
If you let me be the first to vote, I’d choose Godwin, AND re-sign Whitehead in the process. THEN use my first pick in the draft to pick up a CB. I’d also use whatever $$$ I could scrape together to sign a quality veteran CB for a reasonable cost. As we saw this year, three might be company, but it’s not enough to make it through a 17-game season plus the playoffs.
Regarding Market Values Joe, that’s what Spotrac sets on them, not me. Whether they’re right or not this early in the process is anybody’s guess.
IMO only 1 person knows a player’s Market Value: the GM who signs him. That sets the player’s ‘value’ (although everyone else may say ‘You paid too much’ or ‘Wow, you got a great deal’).
I didn’t get to vote before the poll was closed. I would have picked whitehead, his impact on the secondary was clear last year when he got injured in the playoffs. Carlton Davis is good, although I think he is more of a #2 CB. I would love to keep them both, but if I had to choose it would be whitehead. Regardless if it was Davis assignment on the TD pass in the rams game or not, when their is miscommunication on your defense on a 3rd & 20, and you know your defense is in a cover 2, you leave the flats route and make sure you don’t get beat deep. It’s a no brainer and likely cost our bucs a SB.
Have no clue why we couldn’t keep both. Pretty ironic though that 2 years ago people wanted Davis gone.
I missed the vote, but I would have abstained anyway.
We need to keep both. Davis has reached his top value…and it is good. Whitehead has a better instinct for where the ball is going. He deserves more time to see how he develops.
We’ll probably lose JPP and Suh…if we can fill their roles well, the defense will still be good. If.
I love Whitehead but CD3 is a bonafide top 10 CB and the fact that it’s not only this close in voting but that more people want Whitehead than him is insane to me.

Davis is our best CB……..we need to add one…….
I love Whitehead and hope we keep both of them.
February 4th, 2022 at 10:22 am
I couldn’t vote. Problem is both get hurt a lot. And I don’t consider all DB positions as the same.
Whitehead, with his instincts and serious LoS play, would be harder to replace, although Davis is a very good corner.
February 4th, 2022 at 10:24 am
Davis, I want Whitehead. But this team had suffered without one competent CB for WAY too long to just Let Davis go

Draft the trenches and OG’s—– keep the secondary.

The free agent corner back list is pretty short…
Stephon Gilmore
Joe Haden
Kyle Fuller
Chris Harris
Patrick Peterson
B. Callahan
Jason Varrett
Kevin King
X. Rhodes
D. Williams
That is the top ten. Maybe bring in Gilmore and let Davis walk or test free agency… Davis is probably better than everyone on this list.
I really prefer to keep both. I believe keeping the defensive backfield together is a priority this offseason.

The other issue with Whitehead is a guy his size laying the boom never last long. Injuries get wracked up
February 4th, 2022 at 10:58 am
Davis can’t, or won’t, tackle. Those guys are a dime a dozen and we can get another one cheap.
February 4th, 2022 at 11:07 am
answer is Davis and there shouldn’t be any discussion about it.

GO BUCS!!!!

Primetime didnt like contact wither . Bucs need at least 1
Good cb
February 4th, 2022 at 11:37 am
Let them walk. Bucs will need all the compensatory picks they can get for the obvious rebuild.

That’s a tough one, but Richard Sherman convinced me about Whitehead, as did watching him finish the season so strong.
Whitehead (but hopefully both).
February 4th, 2022 at 12:01 pm
Keep both if possible but def Jordan….he’s a game changer. CD has his moments but Ive seen some bs from him.
Draft that Tennessee CB Alontae Taylor….bottom of 2nd maybe he lasts into the 3rd.
February 4th, 2022 at 12:18 pm
dumb question. whitehead can be franchised for peanuts because he is a saftey. Davis Long term, Godwin long term. Jimmy G Boom!
February 4th, 2022 at 12:24 pm
Maybe Whitehead Davis too much $$$$! sign Peterson for change and draft a cb.

@marine:
we really need to land a beast off the edge…
and pray and pray some more that shoyinka blossoms…
and hope what we got from nelson down the stretch is really who he has become

a beast off the edge to replace jpp…that lets shaq transform back into the potential terrorizer he can be
