Jimmy Garoppolo Feels He’s Done With 49ers

February 2nd, 2022

49ers QB Jimmy GQ.

In a season obituary of sorts, it seems 49ers quarterback Jimmy GQ has resigned himself to the notion he will be playing for another team in 2022.

Jimmy GQ, so writes David Lombardi of The Athletic, pretty much confessed his next goal is to find a team run by good people with good teammates.

“I’m excited about the opportunities to come,” Garoppolo said. “I just want to go to a place where they want to win. I mean, that’s really what I’m in this game for. I’m here to play football here, to win football games. And as long as I’ve got that and good people around me, I think the rest will take care of itself.”

Jimmy GQ knows the 49ers just drafted a quarterback in the first round, Trey Lance. He was even drafted before Mac Jones, which may be on 49ers general manager John Lynch’s gravestone someday. And teams don’t draft first-round quarterbacks to sit on the bench.

That means bye-bye Jimmy GQ, and it seems he knows it.

All Jimmy GQ is win. The pride of the Princeton of the Midwest, Eastern Illinois University, led the 49ers to the NFC title game in two of the last three years and the Super Bowl three years ago, where he and the 49ers led the Chiefs in the fourth quarter.

Gee, Joe knows of a team in Florida that is suddenly in need of a proven winning quarterback.

He throws a Floating Butterfly pass on the out route.

  2. 1sparkybuc Says:

    Build the team around Trask.

  3. Christos Says:

He is not a bad QB but he is not very good either. Even in the 49ers run to the championship game he made a couple of really bad throws every game that was luckily dropped by opponents. If our Bucs go that route then they better upgrade the Defense. JG won many games for the 9ers but make no mistake the Defense was the better side in that team. You can win with him sure but not because of him.

And the 49ers are done with him!

With the exception of a very few teams with great defenses, all Super Bowl winning teams had one thing in common—great quarterbacks!
Trent Dilfer was the worst and Brad Johnson was serviceable, but judging from the list below ‘serviceable’ rarely gets it done. Does anybody who follows football think Jimmy G. is anything but serviceable?

  5. Buczilla Says:

I’ll embrace Garoppolo if we end up getting him since folks far wiser than me in regards to football thought that he was good enough, but I’d rather roll with Trask.

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

JA- It has been floated as an option for the Bucs since news came out. Which, to be fair, is typical. Insert big name FA here, that’s fans’ nature.
Is Jimmy a good fit though? Look at the offense the Niners run and look at ours. We don’t have a run-game that Jimmy can hide behind. We throw the ball more than most teams, and I would argue more than we should.

Wilson’s another one. Great QB! Does he fit? Can he drop back 40+ times a game and deliver?

Simply put, you can’t replace a QB like Brady. If it were me, I’d see what I have in Trask and get a decent back-up just in case. This team has plenty of talent to compete. We have to develop a QB at some point. Signing vet FAs can only go so far.

  7. Bruce Blahak Says:

Save The Licht House…Make Bucs Great Again.

  8. JA Says:

    Fanman …

Agree, especially with your take on Garoppolo. And that was my point.
Great quarterbacks are few and far between. Conclusion: winning a Super Bowl is a near impossibility without one unless your team is blessed with a transcendent defense …

  9. mg Says:

    I’d pass on jimmy glass

  10. Oneilbuc Says:

No to Jimmy G it’s time for BA to do his job and develop Trask. A lot of yall done all that talking about Jamies and how BA didn’t change the offense for Brady it was the same offense remember?? Remember in BA yall trust I told yall lol 😆 🤣!! I told yall he never could develop a quarterback ! Now I’m starting to think he set Jamies up to fail just to get a veteran quarterback!!

  11. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Garbage-olo has never looked off a receiver….never. BIG PASS.

  12. Pruritus Ani Says:

Will be having surgery on his thumb as well. MIght want to wait to see how it turns out.

  13. Buc92’ Says:

Nobody wants Jittery G, please stop writing about him like seriously stop it . Build around Trask or Watson … Jittery G is going full out porn soon which is more important to him

    GoBucs!

  14. K_bassuka Says:

Bringing Jimmy G or any other middle of the pack or worse QB here will be a mistake. If they can’t pry a top QB like Rodgers, Wilson, or Watson then they should give Trask the chance to play. You drafted Trask in day 2 because you saw something and to replace Brady.

  15. Biff Barker Says:

We drafted Trask to replace TB.
    TB retires.
    Replace TB with Trask.
If he fails, we are right back to drafting a QB.

  16. Biff Barker Says:

I’m grateful to Jimmy G. He’s the only reason Brady came to Tampa. That said, we don’t want him here.

  17. August 1976 Buc Says:

    Jimmys problem is
the 4th Qtr against KC in the Super Bowl
the 4th Qtr against the Rams

He is decent, but just not on the biggest stage.
Yeah sign him, but be on the look out for the next QB if it is not Trask

No one knows whats up with Trask under fire in the NFL, he just has not been on the field to even know in a real game.

So yeah get Jimmy for now and build the team, at the same time being competitive while you find a QB that will become “The GUY”

    GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Drebucsfan Says:

Somethings missing about jimmy G…he’s ok but doesn’t have that IT about him, and I’m done with just being OK in Tampa. Hell I’d rather go back with Winston before jimmy G. Now Derek carr on the other hand could be next years Mathew stafford, with his big arm BA would have a field day with him! And he has thy swag that would fit in right with this winning organization. Please let’s not settle for 10-7/9-8 for the next couple of years

  19. Biff Barker Says:

Winston? Winston? Shirley you cant be serious.

Didn’t the last two years tell you anything?

  20. Beeej Says:

Trask is utterly unknown. He can be anywhere from Josh Rosen, to a max of Mac Jones.

  21. ModHairKen Says:

Carr. Garoppolo. Mayfield. Cousins. And on and on. Better than Winston? Better than Glennon? Yes.

Better than Brady? Of course not. And therein lies the rub.

Bucs fans have gone from 40+ seasons of mediocrity at QB to the summit. No one will be happy with a lesser man.

It feels like there has been a death in the family.

  22. Jordan Says:

The more I think about it, the more I think Trask is going to be the guy.

I think they’ll just debate whether or not they can put a good enough team around him for him to be able to grow into.

This is a major reason we drafted him, we knew we had cap issues coming and that if we could get a cheap young QB that’s good, we could keep the rest of the roster intact

Your “competition” at QB will likely just be Gabbert and Trask, and who really knows, a couple of years around Brady may have really helped Gabbert

That’s the budget though if you want to keep everyone else

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We’ve been through this before…..but when we drafted Trask…..we had Licht, BA, BL, Christiansen, Moore & very likely Tom Brady giving the thumbs up.

Jimmy G. would cost too much…..I’d rather go with Trask and bring in a serviceable FA backup…..and there are several.

    Fitz, Dalton, Flaco, Mariota, Bridgewater…

But, with BA….it will likely be Gabbert.

Spend the money on an edge rusher or lock down CB.

  24. Kalind Says:

These people say “let’s go w Trask.” WHAT? Did you see those preseason games? The guy made Ryan Griffin look like Aaron Rodgers throwing to the same slobs. And that’s the guy you want to start?

Did we not just have the bar elevated from Brady? If you watched the preseason and thought Trask even belonged in the NFL, I’m concerned about you. Trask is hot wet garbage and is destined for a short career as a low tier backup QB.

I’m not hot in the pants for Jimmy G, but he’s miles better than most of our other options. I’d still rather cough up some late first round picks for a top 10 QB. In this division? That’s a guaranteed division win

  25. BA4President Says:

Joe, it makes me nervous when you say that all a player does is win. I get flashbacks to reading your Johnny Football articles.

  26. Listnfrmafar Says:

What you all are not taking into consideration is if Roger’s, Wilson, the rest doesn’t matter, fails in Tampa after Brady that kills their legacies. Especially Roger’s. Settle for a Jimmy G until Bucs figure it out. Bucs will need a strong running game because JG isn’t going to win games through the air.

  27. ElioT Says:

Please stop with the Jimmy G stuff.

    Just stop.

  28. allbuccedup Says:

I believe Jimmy G. would a good two year bridge for Trask. Jimmy has an issue with injuries, it would give the team the opportunity to see Trask in small doses. Maybe a two year contract for 40 mil and of course push some money down the road.

  29. Listnfrmafar Says:

One more thing, if Brady left because of the lack of preparation and discipline, that ain’t gonna change with a new QB as.long as the coaching staff remains in tack. Gonna be an interesting 2022 for sure.

  30. Hodad Says:

Joe, the 49ers threw about 20 times a game, the Bucs throw like 50. He’s not a fit for this offence. It’s going to be Gabbert, and Trask battling it out to start. Blaine will get the nod, and if he fails, Trask will get his shot. If they both fail we look for a new QB next year. Gabbert has been in this system for years. Bruce isn’t going to train a Jimmy, or Teddy, especially if Byron leaves.

  31. Bobby M. Says:

Curious if Arians could pull Rothlisberger out of retirement for a year or two. Technically he’s a free agent.

  32. Doctor Stroud Says:

Bringing in Jimmy GQ might give the Bucs a better chance to keep Gronk, who said that he liked playing with him. It looks like the entire tight end group will need an overhaul, and I would like for the team to keep Gronk for another year or two.

  33. Marine Buc Says:

Who is going to pay Jimmy G the $27 million dollar salary?

The Bucs do not have the cap space to pay his salary.

I don’t believe Jimmy G would be that much better than a Trask/Gabbert but would cost @ $25 million more.

  34. SKBucsFan Says:

At least Joe isn’t talking about Teddy Bridgewater!

  35. Mort Says:

Oh my god you are insane if you think this dude is it. No. Just no. If he was so good, the 9ers wouldn’t give him away like that and draft some kid as his replacement. Tom was what, 42 when the pats got rid of him? Jimmy is 30. He is in the prime years of his career and still sucks.

  36. uhmmm Says:

A lot of faith in a 2nd round qb who looked like S&*^% every chance he had. If the Bucs decide to build around Trask there is going to be a mass exodus and rebuild in Tampa. Until they can get another franchise qb.

  37. Pa Bucs fan Says:

Joe you might be a little drunk thinking pornstar dating jimmy is a good qb lol if 49ers had a serviceable qb they would be dominant, jimmy sucks did you watch them beat the packers without an offensive touchdown ? Or maybe did you watch him gag away a 10 point lead to the rams ? Both were ugly

  38. Craig Says:

Jimmie GQ is too fragile, that is why the 49ers don’t want him. I think he made it through 16 games once in his career.

Find someone to back up Trask, or compete with him. Don’t waste money on a QB who will be sitting in a box with an injury while Trask takes over for him.

Give Trask his head and see how he runs.

  39. Will Says:

I’m thinking we’re going to go with Blaine, Trask and probably Griffin and have them battle for the starting job and use the rest of our money to build the team around them. So that whoever wins the QB battle we won’t have to depend on them to win games. Someone earlier made a point that I hadn’t considered but it’s valid. What big name free agent would want to come here and try and replace THE GOAT and possibly damage their reputation and future if it doesn’t equate to big wins and a Superbowl appearance? I think 2022 will see us middle of the pack with a decent record nothing special but definitely better than what us long time fans are use to then in 2023 probably look for that big name free agent to get us over the hump.

  40. Aaron Says:

We’ll have to trade for a QB that has 1yr $27m left on his contract…there will be other teams that want him too. So the draft compensation won’t be cheap…so if you want Jimmy G – you’ll have to negotiate a $100m + contract and make at least half that guaranteed. Plus, he doesn’t fit the offense – when he throws in rhythm of the play he’s good, but the second he starts thinking…watch out.

If the Bucs are going to stay with the No Risk It offense. Even if Rogers or Wilson were available I don’t see those teams trading them to an NFC team. That leaves Watson – I’m fine with him as long as his “issues’ are cleared-up. (legally and with the NFL) I would trust the Bucs to do their homework on him. Outside of those 3 very very hard to get QBs…Wow! Big Ben would be perfect…he’ll hold the ball and has the arm strength to push the ball down field. But being realistic, I’d go with Andy Dalton or Fitzmagic and let them compete with Trask.

Personally, I’d like to move on from the No Risk It offense – go to more of a balance attack and sign Tyrod Taylor. While allowing Trask to Compete / groom. z

We’ll find out soon how the Bucs really see Trask.

Go Bucs! So happy for the last 2yrs – I’m really not ready to suck again 🙁

  41. lambchop Says:

Jimmy G makes the most sense with the ties to Lynch, coming from a NE offense, winning 70.2% of his games, being young, more mobile, and having a relationship with Gronk. This all depends on how secure the Bucs are in Trask/Gabbert.

The only problem with Jimmy is he gets ants in his pants in big moments. Can we live with that and hope he evolves? Is he better than most of the *realistic* FA options available at QB?

I think so. There are worse things than having Jimmy G at QB – like having Jaboo at QB.

  42. tampabayallday Says:

Not a good fit, he can’t push it down field. Jameis would be better in this offense than Jimmy.

  43. Doctor Stroud Says:

The idea of bringing in Jimmy GQ is to keep Gronk, even in the short term. The Bucs should not trade anything for him, unless he agrees to re-negotiate his contract and even then make sure that trade is a 6th round pick at best. Otherwise, let the 49ers cut him (and they will because they don’t want to carry his salary on their books) and then let the market decide how much he’s worth. I can guarantee it won’t be $25+ mill.

  44. fern Says:

    Jimmy can’t throw deep.
What you gonna do with Evans

  45. WalkdaPlank Says:

    “led the 49ers”

Lol imagine sugarcoating the fact that the 49ers lost the NFC Championship AND their previous Super Bowl because they didn’t have better QB play. But hey, he was on the team!

  46. Swampbuc Says:

No to Jimmy Grappleblows. Please. He won’t throw 30 picks but he will throw 20+ very damaging picks in the Arians system, especially without a proven TE to be his GEorge Kittle security blanket. (Gronk ain’t coming back, but keep sniffing the glue if you believe he is.)

He is not a leader or a winner, and is a bit of a bimbo. I’d rather have Winston back than Grappleblows.

    Thanks, Todd.

  47. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

Take a step back and take a deep breath….. let’s look at options:

Start with because of dead money with Brady and likely Gronk, the Bucs are $20-$40 over the cap in dead money….

    1. Kyle Trask ; Do yourself a favor and spend about 20 minutes on YouTube looking at his senior year highlights, whiteboard session with Steve Mariucci and his pre-season video this year. Smart kid, great story… but 60%-70% of his college passes went to Pitts and Toney. That, and in my opinion, it doesn’t look to me that he throws an NFL ball.

    2. Teddy Bridgewater – Please see Fangio, Vic

    3. Deshaun Watson – Would have to trade, couldn’t pay the $40 million salary in 2022.

    4. Aaron Rodgers – Would have to trade for him…couldn’t afford his salary number in 2022

    5. Russell Wilson – Would have to trade for him and couldn’t afford his salary number in 2022.

That realistically leaves Jimmy GQ. Not great but good/serviceable. If a GM trades for him and agrees to $27 million, they should be fired on the spot. No one is going to trade for that contract. But if he’s released, $10-$15 million on a one-year “prove it” deal could make sense and be a win/win. Jimmy GQ gets to prove it or gag and our cap situation should be in a better position for a Wilson or Rodgers exodus which would help both us and the respective teams they would be leaving.

Given all that.. Jimmy GQ is the “least horrible” option I see on the table.

  48. Dano Says:

Costly picks . His team carried him. No to Jimmy !

  49. Capt.Tim Says:

If you want to turn this team over to a noddle armed Rookie in Trask, prepare for 5 more years at the bottom of the division.

With our Oline, Evans, Brate, and hopefully Gronk and Fournier- Jimmy Garrapolo can get this team deep in the playoffs.
Like any good QB- you protect him, he’ll win games.
I still think it will be Aaron Rodgers, but I would be excited to get Jimmy G this year.
After all, didnt he lead the 49ers deeper in the playoffs-than Brady took us?

IF we dont lose our Coaching staff, we are a WR and a CB from being a great team still.
With a good QB. And Jimmy G is a good QB.

  50. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

I’d go with Trask, leaving more money for other positions of need,.. but if we go go get someone, I’d lean toward Jimmy G!

  51. David Says:

    Rob in Land o lakes

Could not disgaree more about Trask. His arm and decision making are very good. He moves well in the pocket and is more mobile than people think. Look at the Kyle Trask 2020 highlights on YouTube. Those balls are passed to locations that only the receiver can get to.

I am not saying he is ready, we have no idea, but he has definitely shown a lot of potential

  52. Capt.Tim Says:

Im not horrified to see Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin as our QBs.
Gabbert looked good coming out of college.
Then he spent years getting slaughtered behind a really bad O-Line.
With our O-Line, I think he could finally live up to his potential.

Our worry now is keeping at least one Coordinator, Bruce Arians, and as many of our Free agents as possible.

We lost the greatest QB to ever play the game. Theres no getting around that.
But he came here- because he knew this could be a Championship team.
    Thats still true.

  53. Listnfrmafar Says:

See if you can grab Lamar Jackson’s back up, he is really good. I think his name is Huntly.

  54. WalkdaPlank Says:

“ After all, didnt he lead the 49ers deeper in the playoffs-than Brady took us?”

Capt Tim the way you and other have decided to use the word “lead” should be criminal lol

In the wildcard round against the Cowboy, Jimmy G threw for:

    172 yards
    0 TD’s
    1 INT

Oh yeah he led them alright.

How about the divisional round with that impressive upset of the Packers?

    131 yards
    0 TD’s
    1 INT

If you or anyone else think Jimmy G “led” the 9ers to anything but the couch you need to do more research. Consider the fact that he is surrounded by a great defense and two of the best players in the NFL at their position in George Kittle and Deebo Samuel. Those are leaders.

  55. EEK Says:

I like going to the playoffs.
I’d take Jimmy G in a second…. unless A Rogers were an option
