“He Got A Master’s Just Sitting In The Back Row And Going And Getting A Bunch Of Coffee”

February 22nd, 2022

Bucs QB Coach Clyde Christensen opens up.

Legions of Buccaneers fans want Tampa Bay to pass on expensive Pro Bowl quarterbacks and/or creepy, sleazy quarterbacks and to ride with second-year man Kyle Trask.

Trask, 23, is still waiting for his first regular-season snap but he’s learned a lot already from Tom Brady, says Bucs quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen, and he’s been quizzed on that regularly.

Christensen told The 33rd Team that if he had to roll with Trask or backup Blaine Gabbert as a starter next season, the sales pitch to them and all Bucs players would be how much every guy and coach learned from Brady and improved because of Brady. And therefore the entire roster is better and the team will build on their Brady lessons.

As for Trask, well, Christensen said the rookie soaked in a career’s worth of knowledge. “He got a master’s just sitting in the back row and going and getting a bunch of coffee.”

Christensen said he routinely forced Trask to explain and analyze his experiences.

“Every week I’d make him sum up; What did you learn from him today? What did you learn from him this week? And it better be more than just your first step on a three-step drop. How do I handle difficult guys? How do I handle receivers who want the ball more and are pouting? Or how do I handle offensive linemen. … More than just the technical stuff. …”

Interestingly, the QB coach neither endorsed Trask nor offered an opinion on his future, and he didn’t reveal what kind of coffee was being fetched.

Also, Joe was intrigued to hear Christensen reference “pouting” receivers (plural) and how that’s something Trask would have witnessed.

“would be how much every guy and coach learned from Brady and improved because of Brady”

They cannot say the same about bruce arrogance. He just does not put in the work! Funny how the Succo bruce apologist say nothing about the blowhard most successful season, was when he was the furthest away from the team.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Let me get this correctly…..Kyle Trask has never taken a regular season snap….

    Complaining receivers……Antonio Brown 1 & Antonio Brown 2.

  3. Tbbucs3 Says:

Let’s not overvalue the “learning from Brady aspect”…..tons of QBs have “learned from Brady over the years” and it means nothing if you can’t do Brady things.

Matt Cassel, Brian Hoyer, and Jacoby Brissett have all graduated from learning from Brady school and they are all still very mediocre. However, I’m sure it will help with their coaching careers.

Brady is rare when it comes to leadership, accuracy, footwork, pocket presence, feel of the game, Etc. And a lot of those traits are not really teachable (especially leadership) and you either have it or you don’t.

I don’t really see Trask as a vocal leader and a guy that’s going to rally the locker room.

  4. adam from ny Says:

sorry trask ain’t ready for prime time yet

  5. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

What could he learn from getting coffee? How to carry without spilling it? While he was gone getting coffee Gabbert was getting all the lessons! Gabbert for starter! 😅🤣😂

  6. SufferingSince76 Says:

So-called ProudBucsFan, are you ever going to offer a real take or is every post you make going to continue to bash BA, even when the article isn’t about him? We know where you stand on BA, no matter how delusional. Do you have anything else to offer?

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

and he didn’t reveal what kind of coffee was being fetched.

Christensen said “going & getting a bunch of coffee”…..not fetching…..another disparaging comment for Trask….they continue on a daily basis….

  8. Niles Says:

“Interestingly, the QB coach neither endorsed Trask nor offered an opinion on his future.”

Neither did he endorse or offer an opinion on anyone else. Haters gotta hate, I suppose.

Now that’s really stoopid. Neither did every NFL quarterback in history … until they did.

  10. JA Says:

    It’s simple math:
You could either trade for a high price QB and lose all your quality free agents due to lack of funds … Or … see what you have in Trask and use the extra QB cash to build a quality team around him.
    Pick your poison!
Also, those who blame Arians for AB’s mental illness are suffering from the same malady. Mike Evans said AB was upset he wasn’t getting enough targets. AB now claims Arians was trying to force him to play hurt.
Who you gonna believe, a quality human being like Mike Evans, or a proven malcontent with enough bipolar episodes to unite the North Pole with Antarctica?
Last thing: I know the last place the Bucs would look for draft advice is fan opinion on Joe’s site, but if I were Mr. Licht I’d take a hard look at letting Carlton Davis walk if he seeks to break the bank and drafting Roger McCreary from Auburn as a first year starter.

  13. New England Patriots Fan Says:

If Kyle Trask is as good or could be as good as Jimmy G, Cousins, Wentz, then he should be started. No one but the club and coaches in Tampa how good Trask.

Based on past highly touted rookies, it is exceptional difficult to make the playoffs in the first two seasons even for some of the greatest QB of all time.

98 rookie quarterbacks have started 10-plus games in a rookie or first year of play, and 12 helped their team to the playoffs.

Big name on list include: Dak, Ben, Wilson, Dalton, Burrow. Macjones, RG3, Hurts and Luck recently did it in their first full year not hurt or full rookie year.

If Trask is at this calibre of QB he should be started and no need to trade for Watson or Cousins or Carr.

Niles…you do realize i’m being sarcastic……it’s like that’s been the moniker for Trask…..”Never took a snap, Kyle Trask”

  15. Biff Barker Says:

Curious how the Trask haters think the Bucs are sign key FA’s back and pay a FA QB too. Licht and Greenberg may pull it off but our future would be very similar to NOLA.
Start Trask and let the chips fall.

  16. Beeej Says:

No reason not to have Gabbert #1, Trask #2. (Assuming we stay in-house) Even if Trask turns into the next Brady, Gabbert will be way ahead of him for quite a while

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

Yada-yada-yada! Isn’t it funny how no one wants to give this kid a chance but some of the same whiners wanted to start the great Ryan Griffin?! (allegedly!)

A LOT can be learned through observation. Can he apply what he’s learned?
I feel a lot better about starting him after sitting a year as opposed to starting his rookie season. Take solace in that.

  18. Biff Barker Says:

Bucs fans are familiar with suffering. If San Fran didn’t think the Goat was spent we would still be bumping on the bottom.

  20. Colin in Canada Says:

If BA wasn’t soo old I would say just go with Trask and build for the future but his age complicates things.

  21. Pewter Power Says:

The stories a locker room tells, I would love to hear ex players get into issues who AB was in the locker room. There are three stories, on-field, off the field and then in the locker room.

  22. Adrnagy Says:

This is the best scenario and good for starting trask. As arians said … he has a all start crew of coaches.
    1-Development
    2- financial

Also the team has pro bowlers and depth to win now.

  23. Craig Says:

    This is getting downright funny.

Trask is worthless because he didn’t start in his first year, look at all the others who did.

One small problem; who would bench Tom Brady to start a rookie?

All those other QBs who started ( or got thrown to the wolves) in their first season did not have a Brady on their team. Apples and oranges.

Any QB that we could pay big money, and a few draft picks, to bring in is flawed. Maybe Trask is also flawed, there is only one way to know.

I think he is better than Mac Jones and quite a few others. With a solid team around him it might show. If they spend for a QB, the team will be less than it could be. I want a team that can start a dynasty, if that means trashing Trask after another year, so be it.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Tbbucs3 … ‘I don’t really see Trask as a vocal leader and a guy that’s going to rally the locker room.’

Comments like this have become routine on JBF, and I recognize Tbbucs3 that it’s just your OPINION, but I just can’t see what you’re basing that opinion on. Trask has never played in an NFL game, and got VERY few opportunities last summer to show what he can do (BEFORE his Tom Brady 101 baptism of course).

Maybe we can extrapolate from his college career. Let’s see …

1 – Came in 4th in Heisman voting in 2020. Nah, nothing there. Heck, THREE players were considered to be better than Kyle. Obviously he wasn’t vocal enough.

2 – Started at QB for a major SEC school in 2019 & 2020. Well, that’s a start (no pun intended). He did complete 67.9% of his passes in those 2 years, but anybody could’ve done that, especially against 2nd rate schools like Alabama & Georgia.

3 – In 2020, he started 12 games & threw for 43 TDs and ran for another 3 TDs. The combined 46 TDs that he was responsible for led not only the SEC that year, but also the entire NCAA. Oh Lordy, if only he could’ve ‘rallied the locker room; he could’ve easily topped 50 TDs’.

The list could go on in terms of his accomplishments (personally I like the 6’5″ & 236 lbs accomplishment), but it wouldn’t sway anyone who’s already made up their mind that he’s not the golden boy everyone seeks to replace our retired golden boy.

Personally what I want to see is a great COMPETITION for the starting QB role this spring & summer. Re-sign Gabbert (he knows the system) PLUS 1 other QB who’s started elsewhere (but who’s now willing to compete for our starting role at a very reasonable price). Then have a great COMPETITION where all 3 of them get a FAIR CHANCE to run with the big dogs. If BA, BL, Tom Moore & Clyde can’t figure out which one gives us our best chance to win this season, THEN fire all 4 coaches and rehire Lovie Smith. (Oops, the sarcasm just ran amok).

  25. Eric Says:

i watched Nicklaus shoot a 62 at Avila.

Didn’t imrove my game a bit.

Nor sure Beady is all that keen on mentoring. But maybe the kid can play. Mahomes sat out his first year then wrecked the league.

  26. JA Says:

    DR—

Thanks for echoing my point and many others who occupy the world of reflective thinking. But, as usual, your time consuming penchant for gathering statistics puts you over the top.
    Good job!

    And no IMO acronyms! Hahahaha!

  27. Listnfrmafar Says:

Those who believe Brady spends time teaching or showing understudy QB’s the path to the promised land are wrong. Brady has always been insecure about losing his job, maybe because of how he got his shot. His focus is on his game and those players he needs to win. Kudos to Clyde, sit back kid and see how it’s done. Bottom line Garapolo, Hoyer, Jacoby Fiseyte Cassel either learned by osmosis or didn’t learn at all. It was funny Clyde didn’t mention BL or BA.

9 TB12’s backups. Only 1 has made it as a starter.

  30. Ash Says:

People on either side of the camp don’t know for certain any outcome with stats or without it’s a crapshoot hope for a good competition best man wins still might end up with a crap product but here’s hoping for the best.

  31. Tbbucs3 Says:

Lets be honest, does Trask strike anyone as a natural leader? (Anyone besides Gator fans because your bias is blantenly obvious by know)

  32. CChead Says:

@Sly, you are 100% correct. FFS, knowing how to win and having the ability and talent to do so, are 2 different things.

  33. Oneilbuc Says:

I don’t care nothing about the Gators I look at his production. And in 2020 he was the number 1 quarterback in college football. That’s all we have to go by , now tell me why yall thought Travor Lawrence , Justin Feilds are any other quarterback that was drafted in the first round deserved to be drafted in the NFL? I know because what they done in college the same way Trask should get his time to start because he out played every quarterback that was drafted before him and that’s a fact regardless of your emotions !!

  34. Rod Munch Says:

Legions of Buccaneers fans want Tampa Bay to pass on expensive Pro Bowl quarterbacks and/or creepy, sleazy quarterbacks and to ride with second-year man Kyle Trask.

    ———–

Wrong, zero Bucs fans want that, unless they’re wanting the team to tank in order to clear up the cap to try to win in the future.

The only people wanting to push out a 4th string QB as the new starter are Florida fan bois who thought Tebow would be a 1st ballot HOFer, and Danny Wuerffel would rewrite the NFL passing record book.

Nothing against Trask, maybe down the road he’s an OK starting QB, but they literally are having to reteach him how to throw the ball since he doesn’t throw with any zip. Going from that, a 4th stringer who barely got any practice reps, to starter, well, no…

Unless, of course, you’re just wanting to clean up the cap, keep Godwin and get to 2023 when you can spend a lot more and plus have a top pick in the draft – that’s completely fair and something I’m not against if they want to go that route.

  35. Posey99 Says:

Carson wentz, Trask plays when he gets hurt.
Dashaun Watson, Trask plays when he gets suspended.
Blaine Gabbert, Trask plays when the fans start chanting
Jimmy G, Trask plays when he gets hurt.

He’s gonna play in 2022. At least, I would bet on it. Might as well cheer for him. We won’t know what we have until we know what we have.

  36. QB1 Says:

We invested a 2nd round pick in a QB when we should have grabbed a CB. Let’s roll with him and a cheap veteran as tge backup. See what the kid has. Can’t be any worse than Jamoist. LFG!!!

  37. Posey99 Says:

“Lets be honest, does Trask strike anyone as a natural leader?”

A lot of QB’s don’t in college, especially at an early age. Does Karen Rodgers strike you as a leader even in his prime? We were spoiled with Brady, nobody is Brady.

  38. Eric Says:

i’m having flashbacks to the throwin samoan.

He was a great college QB too.

  39. Defense Rules Says:

Mr Munch … ‘The only people wanting to push out a 4th string QB as the new starter are Florida fan bois who thought Tebow would be a 1st ballot HOFer, and Danny Wuerffel would rewrite the NFL passing record book.’

Good to see that you’re keeping such an open mind about any COMPETITION for who’ll be the starting QB for the Bucs this season. I for one favor that, and I assure you, I’ve been a Bama fan much longer than most, so hold off on your ‘Florida fan bois’ BS.

It’s quite obvious that the very idea of TEAM BUILDING eludes you. I get that. So do salary CAP constraints apparently. I get that too. What I don’t get is how you can make statements regarding Kyle Trask like ‘they LITERALLY are having to reteach him how to throw the ball since he doesn’t throw with any zip’. How could YOU possibly know that?

  40. Bqen green Says:

Rod Munch makes a compelling case. This team has an either or decision. Attempt to resign key FAs, and get a QB, or start rebuilding now. It’ll be interesting to see which path they choose. Ben is of the mind that owners will only open the purse, when convinced they can win. If they don’t get a QB, resigning key free agents is kinda pointless.

  41. Bqen green Says:

Defense Rules, countless college QBs must be retrained to throw into NFL windows. It’s easy to get sloppy in college, because everyone is five yards open. go look at Lawrence. His delivery is way too long. NFL cornerbacks have jumped him all year, because he isn’t accustomed to the lack of separation. If you expect something out of Trask, you’ll be terribly disappointed. It’ll take at least two maybe three years to find out if he’s any good. Have fun being 5-12 then 7-10, and then realizing he sucks

  42. mord Says:

I’ve wondered whether someone in the coaching staff was helping focus and frame those lessons and amplify the mentorship in this way. Honestly, it’s reassuring to hear someone had the foresight to do so, regardless of whether Trask plays in 2022 or backs up someone in a ‘bridge’ QB role, or moves on elsewhere in his career.

    Good football.

  43. steele Says:

We don’t know how Trask has progressed since a year ago. But the Trask of last preseason just didn’t look good enough. That’s all. Consistently inconsistent. Equal parts good and awful. It’s not a question of his resume, just purely on-field results.

Even in better plays, he is still very lacking in mechanics, worse than many other QBs with equal or less experience. Until they’re fixed, he’s a question mark.

He needs to play. Period. Then decisions have to be made about him.

  44. Mike Johnson Says:

March Trask out there if you want to. I guarantee us a losing season unless……
you have an Outstanding Defense thats gonna kick some A…

  45. Defense Rules Says:

Bqen Green … ‘If you expect something out of Trask, you’ll be terribly disappointed.’

You’re missing the point of what a QB COMPETITION is all about. I don’t know if Trask would win in a fair competition or not. But neither do you. I just happen to be of the school that folks need to keep an open mind about situations like this. None of us know at this point.

And in regards to your other point Ben …

‘Ben is of the mind that owners will only open the purse, when convinced they can win. If they don’t get a QB, resigning key free agents is kinda pointless.’

Disagree with both statements there Ben. NFL owners are businessmen, very successful businessmen. Their teams are multi-billion dollar corporations. What they spend on players each year is but a small fraction of the worth of their corporation. Doesn’t mean that they don’t ‘miscalculate’ periodically, but I’d venture to say that they all know ‘you have to spend money to make money’.

And in regards to re-signing ‘key free agents being kinda pointless’ if we don’t get a QB, that doesn’t make sense. We’ll obviously get a QB. IF you’re talking about signing a high-dollar QB (yes, like Watson), we wouldn’t be able to afford re-signing a bunch of other studs without pushing even more of the salary CAP into the future. THAT’S a prescription for disaster next year & years following.

We got spoiled by having The GOAT as our QB last 2 seasons for a small fraction of his actual value … in those years. Most of his ‘cost’ for 2020 & 2021 is being paid this year & next. And he’s retired. That’s how we afforded all those super-weapons for him (Gronk, AB, etc).

  46. HC Grover Says:

Is this for real? Calling Ms. Jackson.

  47. ChiBuc Says:

I’m a lil embarrassed that Clyde has to reference TB as Kyle’s best coach in a room with the qb whisper, up and coming BL, and the man of mediocrity himself, Clyde. Didn’t TB have a job, starting qb?

Sarcasm aside, I like DR’s 1st take, but make a hard run for Flores and/or Peyton when reality settles in.

  48. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Is Minshew available?

  49. David Says:

Obviously he’s talking about AB (and possibly Tyler Johnson).
From what I’ve heard the last two days it is obvious Trask is not ready OR they know they have a playoff caliber team and don’t want to hand that to basically what is a rookie

  50. Winny Testaverde Says:

Clyde The Glide…making his 2nd appearance at One Buc Place…is no doubt a swell fella but little more than a stuffed shirt ( extra stuffing since first go around ). Watching Brady is one thing…replicating his success is something totally different and a stretch at best. I watched a mechanic once while polishing off “free”donuts but I was no more handy with my car afterwards.

  51. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Thanks for this article, Joe.  Many of us fans really have no insight when it comes to Trask. (I did not follow his college career.) Just, maybe, we fans might get into One Buc Place to watch him during our preseason camp this year.

Anything you can offer us is better than the almost nothing that I’ve had to go on so far.  Though I love the majority of my fellow fans, I take some of their opinions with the proverbial “grain of salt” required.

  52. Reddington Neck Shores Says:

trask has a good ball. pitts benefitted from it. then was nothing special so far with matty ice. the opposite was johnny screwball and ME13. trask will get his shot and until then stay in the armchair

  53. JimbobBucsFan Says:

JA has common sense and definitely has a brain that seems to be functioning well. More comments please.

Defense Rules ,you have also given me some things to consider. Something of value to me as a fan.

Eric, if BA has little use for mentoring why did he announce he was coming back before TB made a public decision? Did he know something we still don’t?

If we should land on Trask as our starter this year we will have a whole season to see what kind of head coach Arians truly is. The season would either stoke the fire more or shut up the BA haters.

I’m guessing that I’m so late to the party that the majority of those who posted earlier today have moved on. Few if any will care what I have to say anyway. I had what an old song once said, “better things to do on the other side of town”, y’all.

    Go Bucs!

  54. Bqen green Says:

Defense, the cap is crap and you know it. Ben understands this is a business, and evey business has cash budgets. Cash being the operative term here, not cap. Gone are the days of lengthy cap jail sentences. Look at the saints, Ben bets they’ll field a competitive team next year. How is that possible when they’re supposed to be languishing in cap hell? Same with the Packers. If they want, they can sign Rodgers and Adams. Yet they are 50mil over? Please Defense, get outta here with that weak stuff. It’s a funny money system the league invented to justify sucking. Now the NHL has a cap, a real cap that doesn’t jump by tens of millions every year.

  55. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Nary none of you know what Trask will do good or bad but that’s with every draft pick. Whether you all believe it or not he will eventually start probably this year. Then we all will find out. I’ll say this though on game days Brady talked a lot to Gabbert so maybe just maybe he learned a lot from him.

  56. catcard202 Says:

DefenseRules is on the right track…

Bucs should resign Gabbert, trade for or sign a cheap change of scenario guy w/ some experience starting elsewhere & toss them out there with Trask this spring/summer & see who emerges. Regardless, the FO needs to find out what they have in their shiny 2021 2nd rd pick.

(I’d target Drew Lock as a change of scenery candidate, once DEN drafts a new poster boy on Day 1…He’s in his last yr of a rookie deal @ < $1.5M & could likely be had for a 4th Rd pick.)

If they all suck…So be it…There will be a better QB market in 2023 (UFA & Draft) …While the Bucs would have better Cap situation & much better draft capitol to work from.

  57. lambchop Says:

Who thinks naming Trask the starter will want our FAs and new FAs to flock to the One Buc table for a signing?

Forget the FAs, it’s terrible timing for Trask to be the guy coming in to fill Tom Brady’s shoes. That kind of pressure could neuter his career.
