Brittle Kyle Trask?

February 7th, 2022

“Kyle, do you own a flack jacket?”

Joe has nothing against Kyle Trask. The only quarterback currently under contract with the Bucs for the 2022 season, the second-round pick may get a shot to compete for playing time this fall.

Joe’s only issue with Trask is he’s a total mystery. He was never active on the gameday roster, never took a snap. So whatever he did at closed practices is unknown to anyone not collecting a check from the Bucs.

Of course, Joe doesn’t expect anyone with the Bucs to go on record and admit (provided it is true), that they blew a draft pick. For all Joe knows Trask could be the Second Coming. Nobody knows but those who have zero motivation to say anything less than glowing things about Trask.

But Todd McShay has stumbled upon what could be a major concern with Trask. The BSPN draft analyst was asked by the four-letter after Tom Brady retired to share his college notes and videos of Trask to determine if he could start for the Bucs this fall.

Mostly, McShay’s analysis paints a positive picture of Trask with the Gators. Until this.

It seems, based on McShay’s research, that Trask is a bit of a china doll.

His durability is a concern

Yes, Trask is tough and willing to take a hit to make a play. But that comes at a cost. Thanks to a pair of foot injuries, he missed all of 2017 and nearly all of 2018. At best, he needs to be protected in an NFL offense. (Tampa Bay allowed a league-low 23 sacks in 2021.) At worst, there are durability worries here.

Now this is significant. If you are going to play quarterback for Bucs Super Bowl-winning caoch Bucco Bruce Arians, you are going to get hit. That’s all there is to it.

Arians’ offense demands quarterbacks not named “Tom Brady” to sit in the pocket and wait for deep routes to develop before letting the ball loose. This means quarterbacks are sitting ducks to get pummeled.

This is why the Steelers got rid of Arians. The Rooneys believed Ben Roethlisberger was taking way too many shots and he was the Steelers’ meal ticket.

And remember two years ago, Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, got pummeled quite a bit.

So if Trask really is brittle, that’s a bad trait to have running Arians’ deep-throwing offense.

So he gets hurt and suddenly labeled as brittle? Bit of a stretch here considering there is a 100% injury rate in the NFL. Durability worries with everyone I guess!

  2. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Hard to imagine him being brittle

  3. Destinjohnny Says:

Is anyone excited about next year ?

  4. ChiBuc Says:

Foot injuries!!? Put him in some steel toe cleats. Foot injuries speak more to a lack of pocket presence (spatially) than fragility.

Also, Joe, the 2nd part of your article truly speaks to BA’s antiquated scheme. In an era that truly depends on qb continuity/health, BA continues to hang out the most valuable part of the team for a pummeling… BA’s arrogant inflexible glory hound mentality. I wonder why TB didn’t saddle up for 1 more year, probably because he didn’t want to be wheeled away crippled.

  5. August 1976 Buc Says:

Jimmy “Brittle Boy” G yes, but Trask?
So far Trask is a complete total unknown at the NFL level in any respect.

But as we all know, the greatest ability is Availability.

Just ask the 49ers, Jimmy G has not been able to stay on the field.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  6. SufferingSince76 Says:

So then he played part of 2018 and all of 2019 and 2020 without problems. He sat out 2021, so is that all McShay has?

BA talked in the Press Conference after the first Atlanta Game about Tom holding the Ball to long.

    McShay…..Tampa Bay allowed a league-low 23 sacks in 2021.

Yeah Tom gets the Ball out quicker than most, but he had good protection for most of the plays he participated in on offense during last season.
Maybe just go back and watch the games again.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  8. jimm Says:

don’t you think that BA would keep the offense that worked, not the one that gets qbs maligned since it is now part of his offense, perhaps he learned something while tom was running “his” offense?

or perhaps he’s earned the nickname bruce arrogance, time will tell.

  9. Red86 Says:

    That second prargraph. Lol.

“For all Joe knows (Trash) could be the Second Coming.“

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Thataway Joe, seed those doubts of discontent. You start off with a positive ….

‘Mostly, McShay’s analysis paints a positive picture of Trask.’

Then turn to the negative when when you state that ARIAN’S OFFENSE …

‘means quarterbacks are sitting ducks to get pummeled.’

MAYBE, just MAYBE, the problem is with ARIANS’ OFFENSE? Not only has it managed to get QBs ‘pummeled’ in the past, but it’s done a pretty good job it seems of getting WRs & TEs ‘pummeled’. Kyle Trask is a big boy (6’5″ & 236 lbs) who showed with the Gators’ meh OLine that he can take a hit. He did pretty good I thought (passing AND running) in the 2020 SEC Championship game against Bama, putting up 46 points.

MAYBE he’s not all that fragile?

  11. doolnutts Says:

I don’t really understand the mystery. It is no different than a rookie being drafted and expecting them to start. You never know what you have until they get on the field. Trask learning the offense and from brady especially shouldn’t be negative. If the guy is going to be anything now is the time. If not we move on and get someone else.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

All we do know is that Licht, BA, BL, Christensen, Moore & likely Brady gave the thumbs up to Trask…..
I’m sure they did this knowing that he was fragile and had a noodle arm….

Many of the few sacks Brady took was when he admittedly held the ball too long.

  13. Bucsfanman Says:

    “BA’s antiquated scheme”!! LOL!
It was good enough to win a SB and a division title. So, there’s that! Not to mention being ranked a top 3 offense THREE YEARS IN A ROW!

Trask is a COMPLETE unknown. Anything regarding his NFL career is pure speculation at this point.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^
    1) How many times did Brady take a hard hit in the last 2 years? Maybe 3 or 4? Or less?

    2) How many games did our 43/44 year old QB miss to injury?

    3) Hasn’t the Bucs offense been one of the best in the NFL since BA has been coach?

  15. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Well he has had plenty of time to be healthy…

  16. HC Grover Says:

The problem appears to be Ariens offense and defense. Look how many Bucs got ‘pummled’.

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

“Is anyone excited about next year ?”

I’m tremendously excited!!! The ONLY thing that could dull that excitement is for us to bring in either JW…Rodgers..or Watson.

Aside from that it’ll be interesting to see how Licht and Arians react to the challenge.

Again I think we go the way of the Colts or Titans. Keep “Playoff Lennie” or get a true stud RB…keep the terrific OL in tact..we have one of the best possession receivers in the game..a TE who IMO is a bit underated…Brate is money in the endzone…no he’s not Gronk but who is…Travis Kelce? How many of those kind of TE’s are in the league? I think Johnson will continue to improve and if we find some magical way to keep CG14..the offense will at least be OK.

It’s on the D next year although as the D man himself D.R. points out the game needs all the parts…are we sold on our special teams? I don’t know I’ll wait and see if anybody has opinions about them.

  18. Juergensen Says:

    Two COMPLETELY different animals.

Farve and Brady took over for injured quarterbacks midseason. What, were the Packer and Patriots supposed to play without a quarterback? The others you cited were No. 1 picks and two are overall No. 1 picks. Most teams selected a quarterback in the first round with the explicit purpose of starting the guy right away, or certainly in their first season.

Joe loves how people try to compare Tom Brady with Kyle Trask. That would be like Joe picking up a skank at 2 a.m. at a beach bar then crowing to everyone the next day that Joe bedded Jessica Alba. Why not, they were both women?

Meaningless distinction. The point is that there was a vacancy at quarterback. There were veteran QBs available on the Packers and Patriots teams but they went with unknown second year QBs, Favre and Brady. You said nobody does that. Wrong.

Nobody knows how good or bad Trask will be until he plays. It’s fun to speculate, but nobody knows. Doesn’t matter if you are a couch GM, journalist or Trask’ position coach.

I’ll bank on Jason Licht and Bruce Arians experience working with Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning, Big Ben and Tom Brady first hand to make the call on who is under center. If Jason Licht was smart enough to see something in Tom Brady when he scouted him, then I think he knows what he’s doing. I’ll give him a pass on winston because we didnt have much choice taking him.

  39. Jonny Says:

That fully rules out Jimmy G then. In BA’s offensive scheme Jameis > Jimmy G both as a fit and for durability. FYI, I absolutely want Trask to start and don’t want Jameis on the roster. But this Jimmy G clamoring I keep coming across is forcing me to bring up the immortal 30 for 30 King.

  40. Joe Says:

  42. SKBucsFan Says:

With any luck Leftwich has Tom Brady’s offense for Trask going forward. Smart coaches develop plays based on the strengths of the guys they have on the field. Just ignore BA’s style and let Trask get the ball out quickly like he is capable of and he should remain healthy.
This season will determine how good our coaches really are.

  43. Juergensen Says:

“Joe loves how people try to compare Tom Brady with Kyle Trask.”

Nobody compares them as players, since Trask hasn’t played. There is nothing to compare there.

The comparison is to their draft status and the fact that each didn’t play their rookie seasons. That is, you can’t knock Trask’s 2nd round selection when Brady was 6th round and many other great QBs were 2nd round or lower. And you can’t knock Trask for not playing his rookie season as Brady didn’t play his rookie season either and neither did did many other greats.

If you’re going to knock Trask, give the real reason: you’re an FSU fan.

Or maybe I’m just an independent thinker who doesn’t prefer to be led by a bull ring through my nose.

Do you honestly believe that a rookie qb will get rid of the ball as quick as TB, audible out of sketchy play calling, and have the same situational awareness of TB. Our great line does not equate to great qb play and when our best (Wirfs) went down, I saw TB get smacked more than your revisionist history recalls.

My beef with BA, BL, and Bowles is that they are fixated on their 1 specialty (biscuit ball and blitzing) and they are slow (IF) to adjust to other teams that are out scheming/coaching them and they never seem to account for the personnel available. TB throwing 50x in that divisional game after loosing to the same team while throwing 50x, when the 1st 2 plays of the game showed we could run straight at them, screams of their arrogance. Not to mention their failure to develop players (most offensive production was store bought…TB, Lenny, Gronk, Jensen, Brown) while letting roster talent rot (Rojo, all TEs except gronk) behind benching mind games/ not coaching. I think BA is great short term with a big budget, but I’d rather NOT see him ruin the teams future just so his ego can be satiated 1 more time before hanging up his 71 yr old whistle after next season.

Tbbucs3 … ‘Give Trask a chance later on down the road….but you absolutely cannot throw a complete unknown in with a Superbowl caliber roster….what if he sucks?’

How did you arrive at the conclusion that our 2022 Bucs have a ‘Super Bowl caliber roster’? We’ve got so many holes in our roster right now that we look like a piece of Swiss cheese. And not only holes, but a number of the players who are still under contract didn’t exactly have sterling 2021 campaigns.

Examples? Cam Brate? Shaq Barrett? Devin White? JTS? Brad Pinion? Our primary RB right now would be Ke’Shawn Vaughn. Sorry, doesn’t excite me. Our second WR would probably be Tyler Johnson. Nope, no excitement there either. Right now we’ve got 25 FAs unsigned from last season’s team, and 10 of them were STARTERS. Are you SURE that we’re a ‘Super Bowl caliber roster’?

Bucs’ hierarchy has a ton of decision-making to do between now & Game 1. How well those decisions turn out will determine whether or not we’re in the hunt for another Super Bowl. In any event, given that we’ve got so many holes presently on offense AND defense, and that we have limited funds to ‘buy replacements’ (as in $18.0 mil right now in salary CAP) I prefer to see us run with Trask and maybe Gabbert or a similar QB (Minshew or whoever) to compete with him.

Signing a ‘big name QB’ (like Wilson) will leave us looking like Seattle did last season (7-10 because Wilson ate up so much money that the rest of the team sucked). Give Trask a shot; let’s ‘fix’ as many holes as we can & then see what we’ve got. IF he’s not the answer, see if we can sign Derek Carr come 2023. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it only took Nero a day to burn it down.

  54. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Defense Rules

Considering Jason Licht last year was able to resign all 22 starters last year, I’m assuming he will have a similar approach this year. So yes, the Bucs absolutely do have a Superbowl caliber rostet as long as Trask or Blaine Gabbert arent taking snaps next season.

  55. Defense Rules Says:

Tbbucs3 … Salary CAP isn’t a bottomless pit; there are always consequences for ‘kicking the can down the street’. Let me use Tom Brady as an example.

Brady signed a very team-friendly 2-year deal back in Mar 2020 for $50 mil ($25 mil per season). We paid him $25 mil for 2020 (counted against our CAP). In 2021 he signed a 1-year deal for $25 mil, $25 mil of which was a signing bonus, that allowed us to pro-rate part of his contract into 2022-2025. His contract ultimately counted just $10.5 mil against our 2021 salary CAP (we still owed him mega-millions, which works out to be $9.1 mil in 2022, and apparently $24 mil after that. Because he retired, we got ‘credit’ for the 2 years (IF we choose to take it, which we may not BTW), but still owe him mega-millions regardless.

Did I mention that Tom Brady isn’t playing for us in 2022 or beyond, despite the fact that we still owe him a bunch of $$$ for those years? THAT’S the impact of kicking the can down the street. And that’s just ONE example of us doing that; there are many more.

  56. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

Sounds like “throw stuff against the wall to see what sticks” kind of approach. Let me rephrase: Jimmy G is ok with me, even though he has a history of being brittle, but the guy we have, who hasn’t been hurt in Years could be a bad idea because he “Could be” injury prone. Am I missing anything? Let’s see what we have with Trask and invest in other areas of need on our team!

  57. Pewter Power Says:

At this very moment there is no reason to start trask over Gabbert. If Gabbert was resigned after landing Brady he will surely be resigned again unless he prices himself out. No reason to start trask if you feel your championship window is open as the team clearly felt it was when Winston was quarterback. They will start a veteran, trask has to be out someone to start period not be handed the keys.

Sure, and for every one of these guys there are hundreds drafted outside the first round who can’t play a down of football because they stink.

Just because it snows once in Florida doesn’t mean you should invest in skis.

  59. David Says:

I do agree that we have no idea how he has developed and what kind of quarterback he will be. What we do know is he was accurate and made good decisions with the ball in college. His arm is plenty strong enough as well and I don’t remember anything about durability concerns. He seemed plenty tough enough.

As far as standing there and taking a hit, this is not BA‘s offense anymore. It has evolved because of BL and Brady.

  60. steele Says:

Trask has been injured for long spells throughout his college career. The fact that he survived his senior year doesn’t hide the health red flag. He hasn’t played recently. All you can do is see how he does. And have a backup plan in place.

If you want risk-free, you’ll have to find someone else.

  61. Buczilla Says:

Malik Willis in the first round! Hopefully we won’t make the same mistake that we did in the Jameis era. This saying that “if you have two quarterbacks, you have none” is utter rubbish. Jameis had no real competition for five years and we wasted five years waiting for him to develop. The only thing that he developed into was a bust. Please don’t make the same mistake with Trask Mr. Licht and get this kid some real competition. Willis is raw, but man he’s got some serious potential.

  62. matthew veal Says:

Over a population, injuries probably repeat, absent coaching and mechanics changed. Some guys rehab so well an area gets stronger.
So m e injuries are flukes. Injuries are part of the odds of assessing a players appropriateness for a slot in the team. Parcells gave it heavier weight than some coaches btw

Trask is not a bet for a serviceable option. Granted the head ball coach Spurrier told him that was the best career approach. But Trask is super bowl or bust.

With a good cast already here and 6 top notch options lining up to Taj e Bradys spot I don’t see Trask playing here any time soon. Moneywise I font see a trade. his chance probably happens in free agency imo.

Still I love the kid, a c h ance will happen somewhere, that’s all he needs.
