Adam Schefter: Bucs Are A Part Of Why Tom Brady Retired

February 1st, 2022

The voices get bigger and louder when it comes to saying Tom Brady did not like or trust the Bucs’ prospects and coaching enough to continue gracing Tampa Bay with his mighty presence.

This chatter is really under Joe’s skin. It is so damn insulting to Bucco Bruce Arians and general manager Jason Licht. Joe suggests Bucs general manager Jason Licht to grab a few media dudes by the collar the next time he sees them.

Colin Cowherd, Seth Wickersham and Peter King have all chimed in on their certainty that Brady was a little down on the Arians method and questioned the roster quality in Tampa, and that was part of why he retired.

Today, ESPN uber insider Adam Schefter jumped on that train on national television.

Schefter was asked directly how much “the situation in Tampa” factored into Brady’s retirement decision today. Schefter started rambling about Brady’s family and his sacrifices for greatness, and finally Schefter got around to answering the question.

“So when you bring up the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I’m not going to say that’s not a part of it, of course. But I don’t believe that’s the driving factor,” Schefter said.

Schefter went on to note that concerns about “the Bucs have certain players to sign or, ‘I don’t like how this offense was run in this quarter of a game.’ I don’t think it’s about that nearly as much as the larger picture.”

Why is Schefter even going here? Is it true?

Joe can’t believe Brady would think that way. Something doesn’t add up, not from a team that just won 22 of its last 27 games and a Super Bowl.

Did Brady really sour a little on Arians (because of Antonio Brown?) and lose confidence in the front office?

  1. Ash Says:

Pretty sure it was all family and the seems like the way the contract was structured plan was always for two years but who cares we move on and look forward remember the past but don’t get stuck in it.

  2. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Brady is here to win Super Bowles, and the minute that looked impossible, he left.

  3. Anonymous Says:

He is gone we won a Super Bowl and won alota games things will never be perfect. At this point idc what is said

  4. Keith Says:

If anything Brady soured on Bowles as DC based on the last few plays of the Rams game. And maybe some of the in-game personnel decisions made on Defense or Special Teams. Why was Vea coming out so much? Where was Scotty on punts and kicks? I feel like Brady ran the show on the offense, so I doubt his concerns would have been on that side of the ball.

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

    Pure. Speculative. GARBAGE!

  6. Pelbuc Says:

It’s like dating a beautiful woman for 2 yrs and when she breaks up, you wonder what you did or didn’t do to cause the break up.

  7. SKBucsFan Says:

He probably did lose faith. He was frustrated more than a few times this year. Things can’t be perfect all tbe time but he expects them to be. It’s hard to live like that. But at the same time he brought a sense of accountability that was lacking with coaches and players. With any luck that mentality it sticks around for a while.

  8. Rich Weeks Says:

I think 3 yrs ago if someone said you can have Tom Brady for 2 yrs, and you will win a superbowl and a division title, then you will suck! .I am pretty sure everyone would of said I will take it..so I am very appreciative of Tom being here for a fast short 2 yrs.

  9. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

This speculation is a waste of time….and pixels. As if Brady would EVER come out and say anything like that is ridiculous.

  10. Nicholas Carlson Says:

I don’t buy it either. Bucs are in a fine position to go all-in again in 2022-23. Davonte Adams is out there, and I bet he would have come for Brady.

My theory remains that he’s quitting because he has found other outlets for his competitive drive in business. (I don’t think he will have as much success there.)

  11. Buddhaboy19 Says:

He didn’t play all that great in the first half of the Rams game ok. They came out flat and their gameplan sucked.

He just wanted to retire, don’t read in to it too much.

Dude is the best ever, it is probably too much to make it so far and not reach the super bowl again. The odds are very slim, that is why it’s amazing he won 7 and went to 10.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s too tempting for talking heads to find something other than Giselle & family to blame for Tom’s retirement. They can do very little with that.

It’s also easy for some fans who have a beef with BA or Licht to harp on that as the reason.

    Handling of AB…..I think not.

It sure would be nice if any of these folks would provide even a smidgen of evidence.

Tom didn’t mention NE one time in his announcement but lauded Tampa…..how about speculating about that?

  13. zzbucs Says:

Well if it´s true that things got worst between TB and BA because of Antonio Brown, and I don´t think it is…..Well bye bye TB12, thanks, but you are wrong!!!

The entire Bucs organization pleased TB 12 requirements…AB Lenny Gronk…BA even changed the way he played (thanks god) and we won the SB…..

Next year we brought the band together and TB12 wase happy…..injuries all over….We lost……Things happens…

Again I think the Bucs organization was not the issue here, it was a matter of family, and leaving on his peack…..

  14. DingleBerry Says:

I’ll tell you precisely what Brady had an issue with.

He didn’t like that Bruce Arians cut AB mid game during a SB run when Godwin was already out for the season.

  15. RajBucsFan Says:

There’s certain sacrifices you make to win championships. The Bucs publicly lambasting AB and saying they might cut him from the fake vax card was dumb. They knew they were going to keep him, but publicly ridiculing him knowing the temper he has accomplished nothing except maybe appeasing some of the women and woke fans. Cutting ties with AB after this season and publicly supporting him til then was the way to go. Bucs beat Bengals in the super bowl easily with Ab as our WR2

  16. YoungBucs Says:

    🥱🥱🥱🥱

  17. Stacy Savelio Says:

    Bruce Arians (69yrs) retirement?

    Potential Replacement:
    -HC Jim Harbaugh
    -DC Vic Fango.
    -OC Pep Hamilton

  18. adam from ny Says:

these guys just want to poison things…

tom’s stay here was good in this fan’s eyes…

yeah the 3rd year on the contract turned out to be complete bs, and just a money shuffle to acquire players…

but the brady tenure was pretty f’in amazing…

turns out , he was just a short stay guest at the bucs hotel

  19. Bucanero Says:

The AB situation was mishandled. Clearly Arians triggered AB. Tom didn’t like that. He was also not happy coaches were doing interviews instead of focusing going for two. I think that should be clear when he writes that the commitment has to be 100%. That said, AB was a jerk and put people`s lives at risk with his lies and diva demands. So I can understand BA getting rid of him. There’s something to all of that but the bottomline is that this day was coming and I am grateful to Tom and the organization for the ride. It’s time to move on. Bring Fournette back, we need a running game with our rookie QB. I’ll take an experience QB on the cheap as plan B. We are not rebuilding we are still a playoff team. Let’s go Bucs!

  20. Aaron Says:

He looked at next year’s schedule – LOL

While I do believe our coaching staff can coach players up. I don’t believe they scheme very well. Hence, 0 – 6 vs the Saints and Rams. (I know we beat them in the Playoffs but that was due to defense and turnovers not a thoroughly thought out offensive game plan) We never did anything different – WRs run routes, OLine protect, Brady please bail us out. Zero imagination. (See 49ers, Rams, KC, Saints offensive game plans)

Very thankful for the last 2yrs – lets face it we were looking at keeping JW or bringing in T. Bridgewater. We got a little reprieve from mediocrity / sucking.

  21. Hodad Says:

It was just time, simple as that.

  22. Bucamania Says:

I feel like we all kind of saw this. Tom likely grew tired of the coaches and players not living up to his standards of excellence and level of commitment. The guy had to be the coach and QB and maybe even the GM.

  23. SB Says:

    Typical media scum.

  24. Buc4evr Says:

After reading the full text of his goodbye letter to the organization and the fans , I find it hard to believe what Schefter is saying. Who seriously believes that anyone in the Bucs organization wouldn’t do anything to have Tom come back for one more year. That includes getting the free agents that Tom wants. I think it all comes down to Giselle…lol.

  25. Buc50 Says:

I don’t care what the reasons are. We got a Super Bowl out of the deal and now we will rebuild. We have more rings than the Falcons, Panthers and Saints combined. I want more but I’ll take what we got.

  26. Listnfrmafar Says:

I’ll say it again, I’ve watched him his whole career and NEVER saw him tell his OC no on a play call or question a timeout. This was commonplace as far back as last season, he even did it in the SB. He saw these coaches as incompetent and got tired of doing their jobs. He in the first NO game he gets Bucs the lead and within minutes gave it right back to Trevor Simeon, not Mahomes, Roger’s or Wilson. It happened in the Dallas, Bill’s, Indy, Jets, couldn’tget off the field in Washington. The players were winners but the coaches are not. See ya!

  27. Oxycodoms Says:

Bucs always stumbled against the great playcallers often finding themselves trying to dig out of a whole. It was more about in game adjustments than game planning. Works against jets and panthers but not against and rams. saints, 49ers would’ve probably beat the bucs. Mccarthy woukdve been the perfect opponent

  28. DieHard Buc's Fan Says:

It really sounds like 100% pure BS. The Buc’s brought everyone back who won the Super Bowl. While it is possible that Brady may have had issues with some of the coaching I seriously doubt that that would have motivated him to walk away.
The man is 44, has a beautiful family, and is involved with other business ventures.

Coming as close as we did to beating the Rams when we were missing Godwin, Brown, and Wirfs, shows we had what it took to go deep into the playoffs.

  29. HC Grover Says:

My magic 8 Ball says the Bowles Blunder was a factor. Also he was not liking the outlook of The Bucco Bruce farewell tour of 2022? He was ‘restrained’. I am no expert but look at all the slow starts and how well we did in the hurry ups. I dunno, did Brady call plays in the hurry up offense? I bet there is something to this. Bucco is ready for his last Hurrah and happy as can be. JMO. It matters not now. On to the next chapter. The Soap Opera starts a new season.

We could contend for NFC South!

  30. Jabuc Says:

He won a super bowl last year and went 13 – 4 and won the division. This type of take is so childish and lazy.

  31. zzbucs Says:

Well, how a mediocre team can win a SB ???

Please go and check winnings and lossing in the last ywo years……and tell me of thatñs mediocre!!!

Come on guys, what the hell are you talking about!!!!

  32. Killian Says:

This isn’t news. Let’s get some articles on our free agents, cap situation and how we continue to be a competitive team without Brady.

  33. Conte Piscatelli Says:

This coaching staff, and most of this roster went 7-9 without Brady, so let’s not anoint any of them as being beyond reproach. I like BA but he really isn’t Bellicheat, it’s harder to deal with mediocrity when you’ve been a part of excellence.

  34. Tony Says:

Just getting tired of rebuilding & watching everybody else do something. Do you want to be good for just a couple years or all the time & every year?

  35. Buddhaboy19 Says:

just like that, He’s gone. I’m depressed.

  36. adam from ny Says:

    sorry killian:

it’s tom brady week again whether you like it or not

  37. T REX Says:

I totally believe it. He didn’t like how we practiced last year. He didn’t like the playbook. He basically ran the team.

From chumps to Champs back to chumps

  38. Lamarcus Says:

So Brady couldn’t defeat the BUCS losing culture BEAST!! I mean I get it… It’s really hard to play here consistently. But I always believe Brady will give 2 years

  39. HC Grover Says:

    Keep BL change the coaches.

  40. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Joe: stop bringing up 22 of 27. Clearly they came out flat in some games & Tom felt he had to paper over all that just to get to some of that 22.

  41. bucs4life Says:

Joe, I’m afraid Colin Cowherd, Seth Wickersham and Peter King are right. And I’m also afraid that summarizing our team situation in the phrase “a team that just won 22 of its last 27 games and a Super Bowl” is somewhat misleading.

Unfortunately, coaching malpractice was a constant in both 2020 and 2021. Hopefully we righted the ship after that game in Atlanta in late 2020, and the team started clicking and having excellent game plans. Not so much this year, in which we struggled WAY more than necessary and won a lot of close games in which the offense and the defense had sputtering issues through a considerable time of the games.

I love Arians “rock n roll” style of coaching, with lots of liberties to coordinators and clubhouse, and I’d rather see his style than Belichick’s style. But unfortunately this can backfire sometimes. And the way they blamed some players like Lavonte felt VERY bad and felt like there’s really something else going on between the players and coaches that we can only wonder about.

  42. Lamarcus Says:

He’s probably tired of seeing that poor secondary. Then Brady has to see in his face. How terrible is that? And then you want another year with SMB getting torched, Dean injured by the 2nd quarter, Slow Whitfield and he should be a linebacker, Whitehead shoulders tackles better than his arms, Devin white running around like a chicken with this head cut off…that’s horrible. And come back next year? Heck no

  43. LakelandSteve Says:

I have already said this once. Why are we ignoring his comments toward the end of the season and playoffs. He talked about lack of focus. Evidently someone decided it was more important to go to the movies than get ready for a game because he brought up going to the movies instead of preparing. Obviously something within the team was bothering him and I agree, I doubt that it was on offense. I know after the debacle by the defense in the rams game. The horrible defensive game plan. Why would he want to come back. Let me see (22 years in the league, seven Super Bowls, do I really want to play another season so some genius defensive coordinator on my team can end our season by his lame game plans?). Nope time to retire.

  44. Jon Juergensen Says:

“I don’t believe” … “I don’t think” … In other words these blowhards have no evidence. They don’t even cite an “anonymous source”. Lame.

  45. lambchop Says:

They mentioned Brady might have had issues with the roster? Did they look at what he was working with most of his career in NE? That’s laughable when you add in that he got exactly the pieces he wanted in FA. I call BS.

The offense was a problem? He’s the QB, we’ve seen him shake off calls, audible, and all the things QBs do. The Bucs installed Patriots plays and took what Tom was comfortable doing into consideration. I call BS.

Antonio Brown is the only X factor, but Brady is used to losing players in NE left, right, and center with BB. BA is not any where close to being ruthless like BB. Antonio Brown became a distraction. And if there’s one thing that we know from Tom Brady, is he hates distractions in the middle of a season. Plus, AB back stabbed Brady and the Bucs in the aftermath. I call BS.

The real issue here is family and lots of contracts up in the air. He has achieved everything. The Bucs organization acquiesced to all his demands and he mentioned that as much in his retirement post. If he had any problem with the above, it would be hypocritical of Brady. I don’t think he’s ever been the type of player to expect every single player be a Pro Bowler. The Bucs even informed him they were going to draft a QB. I mean the organization put him on a pedestal.

And if you look at clubs like the Jags and Packers, where they have real player/GM/coach problems, playing in Tampa was a luxury.

  46. Paul Murphy Says:

It’s pretty simple, the pressure is coming from his wife and HAS been for five years! There’s a tremendous amount of stories out there that’s she’s been asking him to retire since he turned 40. Even after last year’s Super Bowl the first thing she said was “what do you have left to prove?”. Now he was able to convince her just one more year because this lineup is stacked but going forward without AB and a questionable Godwin and maybe no Jensen or Cappa among others and there were just too many loose ends. After all if he couldn’t get it done with THIS team he probably thought he’s not going to get it done with next year’s roster.
Also, no one said he’s gonna love retirement. I think when September rolls around he’s going to be miserable but he’ll get over it.

  47. lambchop Says:

The only thing I could see happening was maybe some egos got involved.

Why would he be upset with Bowles and BL? There the same guys that he won a Super Bowl with in 2020. Yea, he may be disappointed, but that’s life. Without the turnovers that the defense got us, we wouldn’t have even had a chance to tie the game.

Why are people thinking that Tom Brady is the only one responsible for our success?

  48. Jon Juergensen Says:

Brady had a QBR of 13.5 against the Rams. He made the right decision.

  49. EA Says:

Licht and Arians put up with ABs crap for as long as they did for Bradys sake, no other organization would have given brady the freedom to call the shots the bucs did.
If Brady is butthurt ( which I highly doubt ) because of that jerk AB than he is better off retired.
Family, Bradys age, next years schedule and salary cap situation played a factor in that order.

  50. Marine Buc Says:

If anything TB12 looked at our salary cap situation (less than $20 million), roster situation (27 free agents – 12 are starters) and draft position (#27) and decided not to captain a sinking vessel…

The Super Bowl window has officially closed in Tampa Bay.

It’s time for us to continue drafting well, find our next QB and sign as many quality free agents that we can afford.

  51. ElioT Says:

I can tell you he probably wasn’t all too thrilled with a lot of the offensive play-calling.

We won way more games due to Brady’s heroics vs. the crap play-calling.

Especially the scripted plays to start the game.

We’ll see how great of an Offensive coordinator Byron is when he doesn’t have the GOAT at QB.

  52. lambchop Says:

The last thing I’ll say about this is Tom Brady realizes the longer he plays, the more he’ll be unc to a whole bunch of young dudes who may not be all that dialed in as much as he is.

He has definitely come to that point in his career. I think without the Patriot system, Tom had to burden a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. I mean the system was installed to a degree once he came and taught everyone what it takes to win, but I’m sure that’s still a burden that he feels he has to maintain being the one who brought a new culture in place.

  53. Rayjay1122 Says:

I think Brady did sour after the AB situation. Hey, AB is a loser but BA launching him during a game is also in the realm of Loser. Just my opinion but things looked different mid way through the season. Maybe the Bucs having Brady was like a dweeb getting to date the prom queen for a year. The Bucs are not on the same level as the GOAT. Sorry but it is true. Been a Bucs lifer and what I have learned to expect is losing most of the time. It was a fun ride while it lasted. Like most thrill rides, the wait was too long and the ride was too short.

  54. stpetebucsfan Says:

Why can’t we simply take people at their word? Are these guys all calling Tom Brady a liar? Why yes they are!

He has more money than he would ever need and Giselle has even more. He’s set records that will NEVER be broken.

So what does he lack? As a 74 year old I have the answer. He lacks time!!!
Time to be with his boys who will grow up faster than you can believe. My son is now 46 years old! Yeow! My grandkids are the age of Bradys younger boys.

For a guy who has led the perfect life why is it so freaking hard to accept that he realizes father time is not on his side…and I’m not talking about football..I’m talking about time to enjoy with his boys.

People need to make stuff up to sell ads.

  55. THETRUTH Says:

All opinión no facts , these guys reach for stories with hope one sticks if it doesn’t stick they do t get called out on it.

  56. ClodHopper Says:

Maybe that’s why he had all those extra meetings. He didn’t think the staff was doing enough.

  57. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Brady specifically said …. ” at this point everybody should be 100+% focus on playoff football. Not the time to go the movies or relax or do something else”… sounds like he was talking about his OC and DC getting interviews left and right during the crucial week against the RAMS.

  58. mark2001 Says:

Nick…the word is that Adams will likely be franchised.

  59. Steven007 Says:

Paul, you’re exactly right. In his situation it is the wife. She was making noise his last few years in New England. She was the reason he stopped attending mini camps. Inadvertently that probably led to some animosity from belichick which then manifested itself as lashing out against his guy Guerrero. What’s belichick going to do, complain about Giselle? I think if Tom were married any other average NFL wife, where he was the main alpha and breadwinner, he’d be playing next next year like he always said he wanted to. I mean the guy put up MVP numbers this year with not even the slightest indicator of a drop off. So yeah, thanks wifey. I hope Tom doesn’t regret it when they inevitably divorce down the road. J/k. Kind of.

  60. Mark Says:

My guess is that this is 80% due to Brady’s family concerns, 20% a lack of faith in the organization with respect to 2022.

2020/2021 was a magic carpet ride, 2021/2022 was a relative disappointment. The team was set up to do something amazing but underperformed, primarily due to injuries, but also due to complacency and some truly brain dead decision-making, mostly on the coaching side. The first Saints loss pre-bye week, coupled with the no show against the WFT had to be discouraging to a true fighter like Brady. I would also imagine that how the AB situation unfolded had to be a source of frustration, not because AB was in the right, but because the organization’s response was so clumsy.

These factors, combined with the obvious challenges of reloading for 2022 probably tipped the balance for Brady. In the end, he is 44, a warrior, the best ever, and we were blessed that he was a Buc. Will always be grateful to Brady for the Superbowl win, and will miss watching this team perform at a high level, a given with him under center.

The future is uncertain, and I hope the team can figure out a path back to solid QB play before the young talent on the OL and elsewhere gets old.

  61. lambchop Says:

I think Gisele put the gauntlet down this time. You play another year, you can find yourself another wife. She put her career on hold to raise that family. Plus, there’s no way she wanted Tom’s quality of life to deteriorate by not knowing when to call it quits. She could see his ability was not deteriorating and she knew he would continue unless she stepped in.

    Tom Brady is Benjamin Button.

  62. Cobraboy Says:

    Pure 100% unadulterated Baloney.

Brady was all-in on the efforts to “keep the band together.”

He KNEW that it was 2021 SB or Bust.

The same could be said as to one reason he left the Pats: they had to shed a bunch of cap, and the future looked grim there, too.

  63. PassingThru Says:

The coaching wasn’t good in 2021.

Before and during the 2020 season, it was the honeymoon period. Players went the extra mile and Arians & Leftwich allowed Brady to modify the offense (no, it was not “biscuit” football except for some longer passes). Everyone had a sense of purpose to make it work. Perhaps the pandemic even helped as it blocked out the distractions (going out drinking, dates, etc.).

This season the team went into post-honeymoon, country club mode (the injuries didn’t help either). The team looked woefully unprepared in both losses to the Saints and that loss to Washington. There were other cracks in the wall too that were never fixed: Even when the CBs returned, they were just as inept as last season (for the life of me, who coaches these guys to play zone defense? They stink at zone D). And the OL has some great talent (strength, balance, athleticism) and yet they are maddeningly inconsistent and disjointed (and I’m being kind) when it comes to zone blocking. And then there’s the special teams which weren’t special last season, and yet for some crazy reason Arians didn’t both injecting in attention or new coaching.

The Rams game demonstrated all of that craziness. The Bucs should have been able to run like crazy, but couldn’t (thank you zone blocking). The pass defense was confused (thank you zone defense). The special teams stank it up with brain-dead penalties and poor execution (thank you special teams coaching). That loss wasn’t a fluke, it was a microcosm of the season.

  64. SB~LV Says:

Brady is going to the Dolphins front office

  65. PassingThru Says:

The Denver franchise is for sale. I wonder if Brady will organize and head up a group of buyers.

  66. PSL Bob Says:

Who cares? He’s gone. We can speculate all day about the whys, but that’s all it is, speculation. Anything other than an explanation from Brady himself, and maybe not even then, will we ever know. The focus now should be on where do we go from here. That is the consequential question. All the rest is just noise.

  67. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Bruce arrogance is a sloppy coach who does not put the work in. Tom Brady covered up so much in tampa bay. But bruce arrogance will be exposed if he does not retire.

  68. Holly Says:

I say we ask Favre to come back for one year.

  69. Eric Says:

Brady once exploded on the sideline in his offensive coordinators face at NE. I”m sure its on youtube.

Did he quit at NE when he lost two Super Bowls to the inferior Giants? I think his defense lost two leads late. The colts once made the biggest comeback of all time in the Championship game vs NE.

Brady knows it takes some luck and these games come down to one or two plays. The bucs could very easily be in the big game this year

Geez. Quit making crap up. The man is 44. He retired.

  70. Mr Bean Says:

The diet, taking care of his body, working relentlessly – all that sacrifice and then you cut your career short. He may think he is ok with it, but this is a recipe for resentment down the line. You have one life, one career you worked so hard for, you are still at the top. And to throw it away. What a shame.

  71. D-Rome Says:

Schefter now deserves the benefit of the doubt with these reports. The Bucs absolutely have a “situation” with regards to free agency and it’s unlikely Licht would have been able to reload another roster capable of winning a Super Bowl. Why would Brady stay here with so much uncertainty.

It comes down to whether or not you believe Jason Licht and the rest of the front office have another Super Bowl in them. I don’t think they do and it’s possible Brady felt the same way.

Like Joe, I would not be totally surprised to see him on an NFL roster again at some point in the future. He should be the NFL MVP this year and in a year from now he’d still be better than 90% of all starting QBs in the NFL.

  72. Adrnagy Says:

Of course its the bucs. Just like the seahawks with russell , packers with rodgers,
Everytime theres a failure of a elite qb .. its the team / coaches. Not them.

Brady started hot against rams right ? He didn’t throw int right?

Like rodgers … rodgers played lights out against 49ers at home right ?

These are big million most highly pay players. Mist play great all the time. No room for errors.

  73. Adrnagy Says:

    Its everyones fault.

Now lets have arians retire and hire b. Flores.

  74. Buc4evr Says:

I agree Beano, I think he is going to be upset that he let Giselle talk him in to retiring a year short. I think resentment may be an understatement in a year or so.

  75. SlyPirate Says:

Why does there always need to be a negative?

Why does someone always need to be blamed?

I’m done with this site. It’s bad for the soul.

  76. Listnfrmafar Says:

BA was against the AB signing from the get go. Then the vax card.issue sent the old man into a tissy, it was stuck in his craw like any another old timer and the first chance BA got he pop a piston. No one is talking about Bell, what happened to him? He was cut for a.back up receiver that never saw the field? Bell came because he to wanted to play with Brady, then kicked to the curb. BA f-ed this up. He’s told old and needs to be put out to pasture with Belichick, Carrol, Reid and Curry who already got kicked to the curb.

  77. PassingThru Says:

Bean is onto something. Brady should have partied, smoked herb, drank whisky, snorted bath salts, eaten Big Macs, popped Vicodin, and raw dogged porn stars. Instead of “My body is Temple” he should have gone full “My body is a Fun House”.

(besides, I suspect much of Brady’s longevity was genetics anyway)

  78. tampabayallday Says:

After June 1st they cut his contract, Tom Brady takes a season off. Feels good and goes to play in San Francisco

  79. Kentucky Buc Says:

This probably sounds like it’s straight from the Grassy Knoll but it seems Goodell and the NFL wanted him out. They knew the Bucs were up against the cap a bit yet they gave the Bucs that impossible schedule. I’m not much on conspiracies but dam it’s right there staring at you.

  80. Tampabaybucfan Says:

BA mishandled AB…..are you kidding me?

    Look at the evidence:

AB gets suspended for the fake vax card…

Then, complains at halftime in the Jets game about lack of targets because of his incentives.

Then….doesn’t report injury to trainers and refuses to go in the game…

Outright insubordination…..BA would lose his entire team if he put up with that.

If AB wanted to meet his incentives, he shouldn’t have brought on a 3 game suspension….by the NFL….not the Bucs

BA took him back (he probably really didn’t want to do that)

Now if Tom thinks that was a problem, his beef should be with AB.

  81. Mike Johnson Says:

If Bruce is gonna continue with his, No risk It, No biscuit Mantra? Then he sure as hell better bring in an experience vet who can accurately sling the ball downfield. Or who can scramble and run. I suspect Toms wife had the final say so here. I mean hey guys..22 yrs. Some people don’t even stay at their regular jobs that long. But lets not get down on our Bucs just yet. Licht and ole Brucey just might pull a rabbit out of the QB hat. They know they got a huge void to fill IF…they want to keep on winning.

  82. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If I’m BA….I’m having cocktails with Andrew Luck.

  83. David Says:

Jena Laine has more insight than any of these guys. She was put on the spot and asked a question along those lines this morning and she flat out said no, that is not the case and nothing I have seen indicates it ever was.

    Garbage reports

  84. PassingThru Says:

    @David

She can’t say anything, it would destroy her Buc network.

I’m friends with an ESPN writer. He had some TMZ-type material, but could never write about it. It’s like that with all sports journalists. Some of the stuff is told to you in private. Even if you report it as attributed by a confidential source, that source and others will freeze you out afterward.

  85. Adrnagy Says:

Arians has given his coaching staff permission to seek jobs with other teams,

  86. Tye Says:

If anything it was the defense not really doing their job putting more pressure on the offense and/or Lefty play calling!

  87. BigMacAttack Says:

AB gonna AB and Media Hacks gonna Hack. TB12 has way too much class to say anything like the garbage they’re spouting. Idiots

  88. BigMacAttack Says:

If Brady had a Bucs’ problem he could have gone to any team and played.

  89. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He may not travel as much but I’d be willing to wager that Brady will be just as busy in “retirement” as he was with the NFL…..it’s his nature.

TBBF is not busy in retirement…….the only thing I like better than doing nothing is thinking about doing nothing.

  90. Anonymous Says:

The only thing worse than the talking heads who write and say things without a clue if any of there theories are true are the fans who are even further removed and like that Listnfrmafar Says guy just flat out wrong about everything. I guess it’s more affirming to their ego to make up a theory and act as if they have an 8 side scoop than just accept a 44 year old who played 22 years and does not need the money is ready to retire. If these theories were true and a consummate pro like Brady is making life altering career decisions based on AB, a coach interviewing like every coach fortunate enough to be asked does, and other juvenile reasons, then he is clearly not all that himself. People make him out to be god, but as AB said he is just a very good QB (maybe the best ever) who still needs a good team effort from talented teammates to win. If he was the Superman some jock riders believe, he would have 22 rings instead of 7. As Brady himself said, it’s hard as heck to win it all. Every year 1 team does and 31 fall short. To be the 1 requires great play, great players and a ton of luck.

  91. Anonymous Says:

He probably looked at the schedule and was like nah.

  92. Aaron Says:

We have the hardest schedule in the NFL next year and we will be missing a bunch of pieces that made this year possible. Retiring was a no-brainer. Bet he wishes he didn’t sign that 1 year extension so he could have gone to the 49ers.

  93. PassingThru Says:

I sure hope Brady buys a football team. It would beat him doing a TV commercial with Matt Damon, hawking crypto.

  94. Bobby M. Says:

When Brady made the public comments about all focus needs to be on the game at hand….that was a bit of sign that he was not pleased with all the assistants interviewing for multiple jobs around the league. He came here to win championshipS….I think what he discovered is once we won ONE, the staff’s focus changed to future gigs.

  95. firethecannons Says:

He retired as he brought the team all the way back to likely overtime only for Bowles to call a f’d up play as usual with no thought to it whatsoever. Todd Bowles is responsible for Brady leaving–there is no winning with Bowles and his level of stupidity.

  96. Oneilbuc Says:

Lol 😆 🤣 now the sky is falling because Brady gone !! It’s time to to see if BA can develop a quarterback remember in BA yall trust !! But I like Trask at quarterback!!

If I’m BA….I’m having cocktails with Andrew Luck.

Why? So Luck can convince bruce arrogance into retirement.

  98. Eric Says:

The bucs bent over backwards to grant every Brady whim.

If he quit because of the coaching staff, then I have lost all respect for Brady. That is plain rediculous.

They completely sold out for Tom, and he got another ring here, which in turn stopped all the “it was all Bellichick” nonsense.

nothing else could have been done to placate the guy.

  99. PassingThru Says:

    @Bobby M.

I think it was aimed at both the coaches and players. But yeah, he might have meant just the coaches. He was clearly frustrated with a lack of focus within the building. That lack of focus was the hallmark of the Rams game. Poor game planning, confusion among the players as to roles on plays, confusion as to coverage, confusion as to where to line up, etc. As I said earlier, that game wasn’t a fluke, it exemplified the entire 2021 season.

  100. BeeBucs Says:

    He retired… NEXT MAN UP!!!!

  101. Bqen green Says:

Keep touting that record Joe. Keep denying reports from reputable reporters who have been close to the Brady camp for years. If you can’t see the forests through the trees on this one, then you’re just a fanboy denying the truth. Ben told y’all Brady was unhappy with Arians. You denied it. Y’all keep touting this record, that is directly related to Tom Brady, and top 10 picks year after year. Wasn’t great general managing, or certainly not great coaching. A money and an organ grinder would’ve had the same record. Open your eyes and listen to the reporting, and BTW do some of your own once in a while. Instead this site has turned into apologists for a rotten ownership, an ammonia brained coach, and a general manager who needed the clout of Tom Brady to sign free agents.
This has nothing to do with “spending time with family” The dude gets six months off a year, and is on the road for what ten weeks at the most. He knew they were not competing for a title next year. He knew the ownership was happy with the millions he generated for them, and happy with the one superbowl. Look at what your franchise has done over the past 25 years.

  102. Tony Says:

Our next QB will be either Captain Fear, Captain Crunch or Johnny Depp.

  103. FrankPillow Says:

This is a Crown Royal program. The GOAT is a strict avocado water kinda fella.

  104. cmurda Says:

I’m not buying that the organization shares any blame for Brady retiring. If he comes back for another team in a year or 2 then that’s different. That would sting too but I think it’s quite the opposite. Brady seemed to genuinely enjoy playing here but the wife wanted him done after the Superbowl. I think it’s hysterical how the stupid media works. The Bucs were an angel of a franchise when Brady came aboard and they were in the spotlight constantly. Brady retires and it’s all the Bucs fault. LMAO> GTOH with this horse crap. The only thing that gives me any pause is that this is coming from Schefter who is usually pretty credible. All I know is we won the Superbowl last year. We were an idiotic defensive call away from likely returning to the Superbowl. With all the injuries we sustained, I’m having a hard time believing that this franchise is dysfunctional. We had a few glory years, did a little sacrifice to keep the band together but it didn’t end up working out totally. 14 wins says it was worth it though. Nothing but love for TB12 and a big thank you for that 2nd Lombardi. In 1 year the GOAT brings a Lombardi to Tampa. It took 36 years to get the first one. Amazing. I for one will just throw gratitude out there. We can solve the Bucs problems later. Now, I’m just going to reflect on the success.

  105. Cobraboy Says:

Occam’s Razor: Brady is 44y.o., not a spring chicken, played for 22 years, owns every meaningful record which most likely will never be broken, saw a difficult year ahead, and said “That’s it”, just wanted to move on from being Tom Brady, Perfect QB, and get on with his life away from football.

Does anyone think some network would pay a King’s Ransom to have him in the booth?

  106. SufferingSince76 Says:

Again, stop with the crazy talk. And you guys that profess to know everything about Brady (most likely his jock size, too), you know you are full of dog squeeze. Spare us the nonsense and go back to New England.

  107. Lesko_Brandon Says:

    Let’s petition…. #BringBackJayMiss……. NOT!!! 🤣🤣🤣

  108. Jerry Says:

Don’t forget also a very glaring fact…. No one has hired Leftwich or Bowles. A team that went to the Super Bowl followed by a 13 win season…and neither coordinator gets a head coaching gig?

    May say something right there.

The media needs to stop talking like these two are best coordinators in the league. If they were, they wouldnt be coordinators right now.

  109. steele Says:

PassingThru, I appreciate your analysis, and agree. Last season was indeed a honeymoon and a refreshing challenge for Brady, and the team was hungrier, a surprise, and healthy. Any looseness and chemistry issues were more easily tolerated. Post-SB seasons are always super tough on every level, and they demand the utmost in discipline and focus. Instead, things didn’t hold, and got worse, plus the injuries, plus the AB fiasco. And coaching and playcalling regressed.

  110. mg Says:

only his caddie knows for sure

  111. captivajim Says:

Brady many times talked about need to FOCUS starting in Dec .. In Dec we lost to NO and dam near lost to Jets..Brady kept mentioning it –because the TEAM wasn’t focused.. With BL & Bowles interviewing in person & by zoom -all with Arians approval & encouragement…Then Brady said ” its not time to go to the movies”; Who went to the movies ?? they kno who they are !!!

Bowles called 1 bonehead play which Cupp burned us on. Then , being stuborn-rather than learn a lesson , Bowles called the same bonehead play leaving Cupp 1 on 1 with safety–that was the final nail..

So Joe , who went to the movies ?? then we’ll all know. We’ll be Lucky to win 8 games with ANY QB that Bucco signs

  112. Jonny Says:

He probably lost faith in the coaches’ ability to overcome the biggest dog of NFC going forward, which is the Rams. You cannot beat the Rams with Bowles and Arians, and the Rams aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

  113. Swampbuc Says:

    Two words.

    Todd’s Bowels.

  114. JimmyJack Says:

If Brady feels like me we didnt give him enough protection in that Rams game. Our tackle situation was completely exposed when we list Wirfs. Donovan Smith prooved he is a liability. We had nobody on the bench we could count on and we couldnt count on our franchise LT. Even if Tom were to lose that game maybe he comes back if he doesnt take such a pounding.

Our OL let him down. Period.

On top of that half of our defenders didnt even know what their responsibility was. Edwards covering the wrong side of the field? Winfield looking in the backfield leaving nobody to cover deep?……..I am the last guy to blame coaching but Todd Bowles had a defense playing that didnt even know what their job was. He let Tom down as well.

Im hearing all these fans praise our failed comeback……..I see very little good to take out of that. As far as Im concerned we got a protection issue with D.Smith and some kind of void in defensive leadership. If you compare the Rams game to the 2021 playoffs we are going in the wrong direction.

Bowles is still a good coach but the fact is he and his unprepared defense let us all done. D. Smith is still a good tackle but he is a liability capable of playing like absolute spit…….He does have another bad game in him and I simply do not trust him in a rematch……..This isnt baseball where you can just “get them the next day”. You dont get 2nd chanses in the NFL.

Also shame on our passrush and shame on Devin White who played like a basic scub in the 1st half.

    ***END RANT***

  115. Swampbuc Says:

Where and when will we see Todd Bowels’ public apology? When and where will he take accountability for the mess that was his defense in the Rams game?

And now, his team has no quarterback and to pretend like BraDy doesn’t consider the defensive meltdown in the Rams game in his decision is being a foolish Pollyanna.

    Thanks, Todd. You suck.

  116. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bucamania

    I think you’re right.

  117. BigMacAttack Says:

I guess Pats fans are upset TB12 didn’t devote a 2 page speech thanking them. I’m offended that Tom didn’t call me personally and let me know of his decision 😂. I know they like living here and Tom may get caught up and bored in a few months, so there may be an unretirement party. Retirement is highly overrated 😂

  118. tvan101 Says:

Team was banged up all over the offense and still almost beat the Rams who are now in the superbowl. Please get out of here with this nonsense.

  119. Mohawg Says:

Back to the den of depression for the next several years, ugh!!!!

  120. alaskabuc Says:

Spending some long over due time with his wife and kids is absolutely the primary reason Tom decided to hang it up, for years he had stressed that family would be a factor and him “sucking” would be the other. Blatantly obvious that he didn’t suck, so it makes me wonder if there was something that sucked enough within the organization for that to be close enough. I firmly believe there was some combination of factors about this current team makeup that was a close second in his reasoning to retire. Tom is such a class act we may never know if it was anything more than just a desire to be with his family and be left to speculate over the rest.

  121. JimmyJack Says:

Fair to blame Todd Bowles for that Rams loss. His defense was on the field not knowing what their job is. Problems like that should be worked out over preseason, or maybe a bye week.

But dont be ignorant like SwampBucs saying Bowles sucks. One look at the trash defense Bowles inherited should make you think twice before such an awful take……..Its darn near miraculous that he was able to turn that defense around by the end of his first season. Bowles got them to play at a Championship level.

He darn sure didnt forget how to coach overnight…….I could say some stuff about injuries and make some other excuses but thats weak. The proper responce is to expect him to find where the issues are and expect him to get it fixed……..I think he can start with a passrush. It forgot how to show up.

But the bottom line is that this defense is in good hands with Todd on the scene. Dont listen to these kneejerk takes.

  122. Bqen green Says:

Yeah these reporters know nothing, they’ve only the top sources in the league, and have reputations at stake if wrong. Go on living in a fantasy world. Ben reported on this all year, and y’all scoffed at it the same way you’re scoffing at scheftey, Darlington, and Seth. Seth only wrote a book about Brady, and it was impeccable sourced. Instead of disparaging good solid reporting, do a little of your own once in a while, instead of living in make believe land. The man wanted to play another two to three years. It was the wretched coaching, and yes loser mentally that drove him away.. you can’t have it both ways, so either y’all are correct, that everything was just hunky dory. Or actual NFL reporters with reps to protect are way off base. Anyone with a functional brain, (Arians excluded of course, cuz he doesn’t) could see this stuff a mile away

  123. Bqen green Says:

They’re only the top sources…. Impeccably sourced

  124. cmurda Says:

    @SufferingSince76 Says

Just to add on to my previous post since you brought up the annoying NE fans.

Take a guess which organization got zero mention. Not a whisper from Brady himself during his official announcement. The Bucs? Oh no. The Bucs got mentioned often and in glowing tribute from Tom. In fact, Tom mentioned Licht, B.A., the rest of the coaching staff and the fans separately and with great precision as with everything Brady. Sure Tom is going to give the love to the Pats fans etc after the fact but the organization itself, Bill, Kraft etc got zero mention. That was calculated. I can’t tell you with certainty what that means but I can tell you with certainty what that doesn’t mean. It doesn’t mean that the Bucs are dysfunctional or that Tom doesn’t believe in B.A etc. Quite the opposite. This annoys me. Schefter has become a pathetic joke. All of these idiots throwing crap against the wall and having to announce Brady’s retirement. Then they wonder why they get shunned by Brady.

@JimmyJack. You are totally right. I know you weren’t addressing that to me but I got hit with a little guilt. I’m not going to pretend that I may not have also said Todd sucks but you are not wrong. I do solely blame him for that loss and I’ll take the Pepsi challenge with anyone that wants to argue that but Todd did do a pretty good job with the defense considering the cruddy hand he was dealt with injuries. You definitely like him more than I do but I shouldn’t say he’s a bad coach even if I think he is (wink wink). He’s good at the cerebral part. I think he is also a good leader of men. I think he is a very bad teacher of men. You can’t be a great coach IMO unless all 3 exist. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Somebody please hire Bowles so we can all wish him well and hand us a couple 3rd rounders. Wish it for the team JJ.

  125. captivajim Says:

JimmyJack; Do you think it was the right call to blitz Stafford on their last 2 pass plays ?

Or should he just have gone to a Prevent Defense –rush 3 & drop back 8 to cover 5 guys (as Bengals did to chiefs)??

not the players fault if the coach calls the wrong play–their job is to execute the play called..

P.S. Packers just fired their Special Teams coach for his play calling .

  126. Leda Says:

Pure BS. These guys write all kind of click baits.

  127. cmurda Says:

Riggght Ben. Reputations? Hahaha. If that were the case at least some of these guys would not exist. Canfora, who by the way was the first to report Brady was retiring, was nearly fired and has had serious credibility concerns. I mean, it’s laughable. These are the things that the normal man could never come back from.

  128. Tony Says:

    Maybe we should start Leftwich.

  129. Erick Says:

It’s mind blowing how Joe and so many fans can think this is a trash story.

Yes, Arians is probably the most successful coach in Bucs history, but what exactly is that saying? And let’s face it, he doesn’t go 22 out of 27 without Brady. Outside of Tampa, Arians is not considered a top coach and Tom learned that first hand with the lack of preparation and discipline the final couple months of the season.

  130. Buczilla Says:

It’s f’ing rubbish folks. Holier than thou d-bags like King and his ilk can’t help but be enthralled by their own self perceived awesomeness and consider their every utterance as gospel for us peons to soak in. To them I say, scoreboard ya self absorbed dorks! One Superbowl and another one hell of a year despite many setbacks is all that matters in the end. Thanks for two great years Brady, I had a blast. Let’s go Trask!

  131. MadMax Says:

Is Bowles gone yet? Somebody please hire him…..

  132. JimmyJack Says:

Cmurda…..Sounds like you had a typical kneejerk reaction. I do it all the time……Defientaly not what i meant with my ignorant comment. Thats just being a pationate fan……….Other then that I dont really care about critism just the long as its fair.

Captiva…….While everyone is hung up on the call for a blitz what bothers me more is why Winfield was out of position…….Maybe you see it different but when i saw the replay on TV Winfield was clearly looking into the backfield and was starting to cheat up. He looked like he didnt know his responsibility to me and didnt really cover Kupp, he just reacted to Kupp blowing by him…….You can argue why put a safety on Kupp(1st off it wasnt even man coverage) but I have seen Winfield play really good coverage to the same zone.

Personally I thought the defense was going to make a play at the end there so I dont necessarily mind being agressive. But you give up the game losing play so i guess it was the wrong call……..But it is worth noting that our 4 man pressure was awful and horrible that day. About as bad as I seen. So to say you shouldnt blitz is a cop out. WTF are you going to do? Just allow Stafford to shred you and not try to generate pressure?

But at the end Todd blitz packages stunk and Stafford wasnt destoying our blitzes. His protection was destroying our blitzes. Todds blitz packages on that day were about as effective as Edwards on that 1st TD. All in all it falls on coaching either way.

  133. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete- Founder of IAMSTPETE.community Says:

    Blah, blah, blah…

The nail-in-the-coffin in this situation was our loss to the Rams.

If we win out and win the SB, Brady returns next year 100%.

But the loss (and the way we lost) sealed the deal.

Brady is the greatest human on the planet and we were blessed to have him here while we did… Thank you for Everything, Tom

I wish things would have unfolded differently, but it is what it is…

On a positive note, I do think Trask has a little bit of that ‘clutch gene’ in him ala Bradyn Joe Burrow etc…

  135. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete- Founder of UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Losing that Rams game, after that comeback for the ages, was inexcusable and we lost Brady after that.

Guaranteed Bowles doesn’t get hired away this year.

  136. Wild Bill Says:

Aging defense, injuries to key players, likely free agency losses and poor game planning/coaching all played a part. Then add his family quality of life and the fact that money is no longer a motivation and it was time to go. If the team around him was still as strong as last year he might have stayed for one more year. But with an aging defense, mounting injuries, a poor draft last year and still low picks in this year’s draft all add up. Last but not least was the game planning by the coaches. There were way too many games where the Bucks seemed flat and fell behind early and Tom was forced to take charge, call his own plays and rally the troops. It all adds up for a guy who demands a high level of performance from himself and others. Sad to see you go Tom. You were the glue that made it all work. Happy wishes to you and your family!!!

  137. Nano107 Says:

The diarrhea these media guys spread
They could even let the guy announce it
Unreal now these pile of crap
GOAT moved on Wife wanted him to move on there is nothing else to prove

  138. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

The coaching has been sloppy and they have not put in the work.

  139. Tony Says:

Maybe we can bring Sean Payton in & he can bring Brees out of retirement.

  140. Tony Says:

We should fill our whole coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball with all of our players from 20 years ago. Then let’s see how consistent their D is.

  141. cmurda Says:

As expected you hit the nail on the head JJ. It wasn’t so much the call. In fact, that call could have and probably should have resulted in a lot of stress for Stafford. Could easily have caught him off guard for a strip sack or pick. The problem was AW31 clearly looked puzzled and didn’t even try to cover Kupp. How that could ever happen to a defense is a bad enough indictment against Todd but AW31 wasn’t the only one. Devin White seemed dazed and confused and so did Shaq. That’s just 3 that I can clearly see just from the replays that I could stomach. Now, think back at how many plays our secondary had a mental collapse on throughout the year. Almost all of them were massive TD’s. 19 games into the season. 19 games into the season Todd. Damn I’m getting pissed just thinking about it. That’s not a defense getting burned. It’s a defense not knowing the play. How does that happen? Now, tell me how Bowles is a good coach again. He’s likeable. His defensive scheme is not the problem. He’s respected. He’s clearly not a good teacher though. I don’t hate Todd but I am looking at the football gods while begging for Coach Bowles to get a HC job somewhere not in Tampa.

  142. Ben Harvey Says:

Think this is overblown. Brady being smart and looking ahead knew that tampa forked out a ton of cash last year to keep the band together and would need to work even more magic this year. Additionally, Bucs coaches were potentially looking for other jobs. Maybe his thoughts were that the staff was not committed to winning a championship this year as much as they should have? Or maybe he came to the realization that this year was probably the highest chance to repeat based on the personnel. I strongly believe they could have gone further with a healthier roster. Unbelievable amount of injuries and believe the nail in the coffin was losing Wifs esp vs the Rams. Fake news!

  143. Mikejp Says:

Yeah, you have 3 great WRs, you lost one due to injury so you should take care to make the other two happy. But you shoot at your foot to fire another one out. How can you win a SB with just one good WR? Why did you choose Perimann over Bekham?

  144. Rod Munch Says:

Where’s all the retards saying Brady would wait until after Feb 4th so he can get his ‘signing bonus’ money…

Literally there’s tons of morons here saying that he gets a ‘signing bonus’ on Feb 4th.

It’s called a ‘signing bonus’ — so what exactly was he signing?

    Morons.

I do appreciate the people who realized how stupid that was once it was brought up and then backed off, but other idiots continued to repeat that moronic talking point.

BTW, the fake news USA Today is one of the idiots that pushed that completely fake news, so just keep that in mind when you read that far left rag.

  145. Ben Harvey Says:

I think a lot of blame on Bowles for that final play. Thing is if it worked, we would be praising him. Bowles can’t be at fault for the play on the field. Players need to execute. How did Stafford get enough time to throw that? Players didn’t get off their blocks!!!, Winfield I don’t think expected a long bomb but he should have still covered their best player down field. Everyone hated the blitz call, but do you think it may have ended differently if they played zone? Tampa was allowing automatic completions all day and had zero pressure on Stafford. That’s on the Players.

  146. T REX Says:

    What’s Licht’s record without Brady?

    IT SUCKS.
