Tom Brady Said He Hasn’t Decided On A Return

January 23rd, 2022

Doesn’t rule out retirement.

Mere seconds after the Bucs won the Super Bowl last year, Tom Brady announced to the world live on CBS that he was coming back for 2021.

Tonight after the Bucs’ season ended with a loss to the Rams, Brady claimed he hasn’t thought about a return or retirement.

Around midweek, rumors bubbled up that Brady is contemplating retirement. He didn’t douse those rumors tonight. Well, sort of.

“I haven’t put a lot of thought into it,” Brady said. “We will just take it day by day and see where we are at.”

Brady said he did not think at any moment today that this could be his last game.

“I was thinking about winning,” Brady said.

    TRANSLATION = I’M DONE

  2. Buc Neckid Says:

    Gronk too?!?

  3. Erick Says:

He will be back. Next year will be his last

  4. Ben the GA Buc Says:

We can’t fault him either way. He needs time to process.

Either way, it’s been a blessing to have him in a Bucs uniform. Do what’s best for your family, Tom. If you can come back, and the fam is ok with it, awesome. If your kids want you home, call it a career. No one will touch most of your records, and Tampa will be forever grateful for an amazing two seasons.

  5. LVMYBUCS Says:

He is gonna wait to see what happens as far as players and coaching. I wouldn’t come back if they didn’t fix this secondary and coaching.

  6. DaBux Says:

    If Tom’s gone, Gronk’s gone.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He & Gronk have a lot of good football in them…..it would be a shame if it’s over for them……but, Thanks for the SB Tom….whatever you decide.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And, thanks AB for quitting on us.

  9. PassingThru Says:

I don’t see Tommy Boy returning. I thought he was, but those opaque comments made me conclude that he’s hanging up the cleats.

I never thought Brady would make a statement during his final season, and that goes back years. He doesn’t make the game or the team all about himself as it creates a distraction. He’ll just wait and make the announcement in private before the draft so the team can examine its options, and then make a public announcement later.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think Brady is retiring. It was a great ride!

  10. LVMYBUCS Says:

This team has a lot of dead weight players on it. As soon as Godwin went down Miller should have taken up the slack but no they put in this idiot Johnson who has proved he cant run a route or catch the ball.

  11. SBucs Says:

Expect major player changes. I don’t think Tom wants any part of a rebuilding team.

  12. lambchop Says:

This guy is on top of his game at 44 and he ain’t going out on a loss. He’s too competitive to leave obvious talent on the table. He’s not going to retire. He’s playing his best in his 2nd innings with the Bucs. And this team is too talented for him to leave now. Although, I’m sure how we handle the off-season will play a part, with regards to who stays and who goes (coordinators and players). I could see him retire if we don’t make the playoffs, but not after a tough loss in the divisional round.

BL pretty much said the same thing. He’s still got it.

  13. MadMax Says:

He’ll wait….see what he has to work with, and if its worth it, we’ll see him. If not, nope!

If Bowles and Leftwich are still here, probably not worth it…..and i dont blame him! Losing some O line and Godwin is big in decision making too Im sure. I know we had injuries to key players bit decision timing and tact on play calls have been atrocious this year!!!!!!!!! Thats what it boils down to, IMHO. Keep them, he’s gone!

  14. SBucs Says:

I don’t think Tom wants any part of a rebuilding team.

  15. HC Grover Says:

Between BA and TB I want Brady and a better coach.

  16. Tackleblockwin Says:

I think he retires. I said it a long while back and stand by it. Many of his interviews definitely showed he was thinking about it more this season. I hope he comes back but think we just watched the last Brady game.

  17. lambchop Says:

    @SBucs,

Chris Godwin will be a priority, maybe Fournette, and/or Carlton Davis. I would rather keep the offense together and work out some FAs for the defense. I think Jensen will get the tag, unless they have faith in Hainsey.

  18. BradyBucs Says:

***** WE HAVE OFFICIALLY ENTERED THE KYLE TRASK ERA *****

  19. JimmyJack Says:

Great game Tom!!! You played your heart out today. I know if we had protected you today you would of won us that game.

Our line let you down. You dont deserve to go out that way. You gotta come back and avenge a liss like that.

  20. LVMYBUCS Says:

I blame Leftwith and Aries for this season mishaps. U dont talk to a grown man like he did to AB and think he is gonna stick around. Like AB said in a interview “Bruce aint even want me on the team” Bruce needs to retire and take Leftwitch with him.

  21. lambchop Says:

AB, a grown man? That clown? The same guy who threw Brady under the bus? Gimme a break. He’s been a cancer every where he’s gone. You’re telling me Ab is right and everyone else is wrong? FOH.

  22. BashingBucs2520 Says:

It’s kind of poetic to go out this way. He battles back down 27-3 then the defense fails to hold. If Bill B. was in charge of the defense that game goes to overtime. Toms final game he needed Bill

  23. Bqen green Says:

He hasn’t decided because he wants a new coaching staff. If the bucs turn back into the yucks, and retain these boneheads, he may well walk. Even Ben doesn’t think the bucs are that stupid. Arians can barely pay attention the whole game, and the coodinators are so far beneath Brady it isn’t funny. The guy deserves to go out with a competent coaching staff. He can overcome a lot. But in a game like this, I’m sorry, it comes down to coaching. I bet Brady and Bill are sharing a text this evening that eviscerated the bucs coaches

  24. gp Says:

    TB!@ is a competitor
Competitors Hate to Give up. Especially when a game has been stolen from him by BAAAAAAAAAD ref calls.

  25. B Says:

Unfortunately, unless you have a completely intact and talented offensive line at all times Brady is not an effective quarterback. He knows that. He said he wanted to “play until he sucked”. He doesn’t suck, of course. But how realistic is it to ask or expect flawless offensive line play and no injuries for a whole season? It’s just not. I don’t want him to, but he will and should retire.

  26. Lesko_Brandon Says:

It’s too early to start asking those retirement or coming back questions. Let the painful emotions sette down for weeks or months. He is still
playing at a high level with crumbs as receivers (except for Evans and Gronk). He is way better than 95% of current QB’s out there.

  27. cmurda Says:

    @LVMYBUCS

Come on man. The AB thing. There are a few things to complain about most notably the defensive collapse in mere seconds to end the game but AB wasn’t jettisoned by Bruce. I know he’s mentally fine. Just ask him. Riiiiiiight.

  28. Bird Says:

Bucs anthem enjoys tasting male jublies

  29. DaBux Says:

If he’s at Gasparilla throwing beads folks, tell him and Gronk to stay. One more time. One more run. For the the hell of it.

  30. MoHawg Says:

Get ready for 10 + years of going back to the den of depression. If you cant win with the GOAT today then you certainly will not win with the scrubs that are dcoming back tomorrow, its just apart of the NFL. Disappointing this team today didn’t come out with more hype, looked flat and outplayed all game. Arians didn’t have them prepared, disappointing

  31. gp Says:

He might have retired if he LOST the game, BUT he didn’t.
He will still feel he has something to prove

    He’s a COMPETITOR!

  32. Colonel Angus Says:

If Brady retires we will be moored back in Buccaneers Cove a.k.a last place. That should make a certain segment happy, the ones who like to b!tch and cry even when we are winning. It was a good run, just went by too damn fast!

  33. Jmarkbuc Says:

I believe he’s done… at least here anyway.

His entire career has been about discipline and structure. That’s not what goes on here. I think the first year it was a novelty.. but this year he seemed to me to be annoyed with it.

The man is the Greatest of all Time and we were privileged to have him, although not long enough.

  34. gp Says:

    Colonel Angus
    The run ain’t done yet!

  35. Johnson Uche Says:

These last two years of elite fg kicking will disappear when Brady leaves

  36. SOEbuc Says:

I told myself at halftime I have to watch the rest of the Bucs Brady phenomenon. I believe we have #16 money with the cap raise. What would be the QB situation if their is no Brady return??? Certainly not the second round Trask. Bruce says he will return. We can pray it’s not Gabbert. I told my dad he wouldn’t hang it up with a 27-3 loss at halftime. Now we have to see. Probably up to Gisele at this point.

  37. gp Says:

    Same to Jmarkbuc

  38. PaulChief Says:

I think he’ll likely play one more year and call it a career. That being said, Giselle seems in charge atm.

  39. gp Says:

    Faith SOEbuc!

  40. Jerry Says:

It will be a completely different team next year. Not just Brady but there will be a wave of retirements. Gronk is probably gone. Suh and JPP are probably gone. There are a million and one free agents, and we blew all the cap space to keep the team together this year.

This is the end. Brady knows it’s downhill from here. It just depends if he still feels like he wants to do it anymore on a team that is going to be heading back to rebuilding mode.

Not to mention have you seen the opponents next year? Absolutely brutal.

  41. Jmarkbuc Says:

    gp

    Your logic is backwards.

He just proved that he can still bring a team back from down 27-3, with third string receivers, a beat up Oline and a defense held together with duct tape.

TB12 has absolutely nothing to prove to anyone.

  42. David Says:

Brady, Gronkowski, Godwin, Jensen, Davis will be back. Add some youth on D line and another receiver or two and Brady can go out on top next year

  43. T REX Says:

    He gone

  44. Boltsfan17 Says:

Unless major commitments are made to address the gaping holes all over this roster namely the OL, DL, secondary, speed threat at WR, TE assuming Gronk is done there’s no reason to return.

  45. Bqen green Says:

The Rams are loaded, and it was always going to be hard to beat them. Ben bet against Tommy for the first time. It wasn’t because of inability, or injury, but coaching. If Sean McVeigh had a competent QB, they probably beat the Patriots in that Superbowl. He’s a fine coach and is loaded with the talent to make it happen. Big difference between the bucs and Rams coaches

  46. Mike C Says:

I was proud of the crowd, down 27 to 3 that place could have been a ghost town, Tampa showed out in the 4th.

  47. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Jerry

Exactly this isn’t NE where they make really smart roster moves and get the most out of every single player 1st rd or 7th.. Which is what it’s going to take.

    And Brady knows it.

Bowles idiotic call doomed any chance we had.

  48. SKBucsFan Says:

I think he would be doing himself and the league a disservice by not announcing he is packing it in while the season is still on. I know I would like to see an official goodbye and salute from the fans/teams.

  49. cmurda Says:

Yeah. I tend to agree. After seeing what I saw, he might call it a day. I didn’t think that at first but our O line got obliterated and Brady was under siege. he proceeded to put this team on his back and tie this game only to have the incompetent one fail to have logical defense on their best player. It didn’t even need to be a prevent defense. It just needed to be a logical defense

  50. Listnfrmafar Says:

No way in he’ll is he coming back.

  51. HC Grover Says:

His comeback in the 4th qtr is worty of an end game. Bowles cant touch it. I would not return w/o coaching changes and much control if it was me. He is The Goat and BA is just a grumpy Old Goat.

  52. gp Says:

    Jmarkbuc
He feels that he just got screwed by the refs
    A competitor can’t let that sh!t go!!!

  53. alvinscissorsharper Says:

4-6 win team next year without Tommy. Gronk will be gone then too and we won’t have anybody wanting to come to this team next year as a free agent.

  54. Jerry Says:

Brady also kind of hinted frustration with the assistant coaches interviewing for so many jobs this week. How much of a factor that actually played in the game, I don’t know. But Brady was certainly at least annoyed that people seemed to have their attention focused elsewhere instead of the playoff game.

Obviously coaches want better jobs for their futures. But from Brady’s perspective (or any other player for that matter), coaches seemed to prioritize where they will be next year rather than the game at hand.

  55. Bucfan Says:

    TB is probably gone.

The only way I see him staying is if this loss turns into a bitter pill, a way to bitter of a pill for him to swallow.

For you morons who keep saying that TB will leave of Byron and Bowles are still here are clueless baboons.

TB like BL, they are friends.

  56. HC Grover Says:

So BA runs out and says I am back dunno bout Brady. Dust off BA.

  57. Jmarkbuc Says:

Jerry he’s been annoyed since training camp.

He comes from the Belichick “ No days off “ school. His teammates weren’t picking up what he was putting down so to speak…

  58. tvan101 Says:

The trolls are out in force.

  59. HC Grover Says:

Golf and fishin season is here. We will enjoy the demise of the BA/Gabbert fiasco heading our way when Brady busts out. We go from GOAT to Old Goat now.

  60. Bucs Orlando Says:

Rams added OBJ and Von Miller down the stretch.

We lost AB and Godwin, who did we add?

Sign Godwin and another Offensive weapon to make one more run at it. Devonte Adams? Juju?

Bring another weapon and have the greatest offense ever.

  61. HC Grover Says:

If Brady leaves for greener pasture will Evans follow?

  62. Bucs Orlando Says:

And if ton wants to wrap it up go after Adams and Rodgers fron Green Bay…..

  63. Lesko_Brandon Says:

If Bowles and Leftwich just put a hold on their interview and focused on simulating what’s going to happen, maybe, we might have a different out come. BL knows that Brady will get an all out pressure and why he did not take that as an advantage like when we try to blitz stafford. Lack of creativity and imagination. It’s time to part ways with both BL and Bowles.

  64. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bucs Orlando

If it were my choice…. Not in a million years. Rodgers only cares about Rodgers.

  65. crazyBucs_CL Says:

bad news: BA is back; Bowles and Leftwich are back with him as well..
plenty of tickets for next year… they are pushing resell due on Feb 11th.
they know Tom is not coming back…
    Back to empty stadium.

  66. Jerry Strickland Says:

Tom was to busy sealing his clothing line last week and being Good Morning America to prepare for the Rams. Tom was more interested how much money he could make after he retires this year. Tom you broke a lot of hearts tonight wheather you realize.
Enjoy your success while you left a lot of people in Tampa Bay heartbroken. Enjoy your new clothe because a 71yr old like me we will never be able to wear TB12 merchandise. We put all our money on you beating Tha Rams. Which you let all of Tampa Bay down tonight. Enjoy your new clothes line!!!!

  67. Jmarkbuc Says:

BL is not all he’s cracked up to be. His stint in AZ was less than stellar. Running BAs offense with Jameis put up big numbers…because the majority of it was Chuck n duck, and ME was good at circus catches. That got us 7-9. Tom Brady was the brains behind the last two years. He and BA could have handled it just fine .. BL was window dressing.

Bowles had a lot of adversity to overcome, but last year the D was not good until the playoffs. Give me a Dan Quinn or Brian Flores , coaches that teach sound fundamental football.

BA is a good teacher and a good person, a real person. Good at player relationships and loyal to people he came up with. I have no beef there. Maybe just a little too delegatory for me. Ironic since he idolizes Bear Bryant.

That’s my rant.. now we wait for TB. But I really think his days as a Buc are over. Man was he awesome.

  68. Listnfrmafar Says:

Bucs coaches broke your heart Jerry, Brady and the team were ready to move on. Did Bucs.DC know Stafford is pretty good against the blitz. Probably missed that while preparing for interviews.

  69. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

IMHO, Tom Brady did his part to beat the Rams. His offensive linemen let him down, but still he came back, and we might have won that game, if we would have kept a safety back.
That is what killed us, we allowed Kupp to get behind our defense and it cost us this game.
    Blame Todd Bowles.
Brady is gone, no way he returns next year.

  70. View from 132 Says:

You are all missing the obvious… Rodgers will be here next year. BA isn’t going with a rookie at his age, and he’s obviously a fun coach that wants to sling it.

  71. Listnfrmafar Says:

So what are you say JMark you hypocrite, these coaches suck?

  72. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I hate Rodgers, but I hated Brady before he came here.

  73. Eric Says:

i think Tom was only going to come back if he could go for three in a row. What’s the point now.

  74. BucsFan81 Says:

If Brady retires. Someone better call Seattle and get Russel Wilson here. He has never had a good offensive line. Bring back Godwin and Lenny with Evans. Then we would have playmakers with a mobile QB.

  75. HC Grover Says:

BA was trying to cover for idiot Bowles in his interview. Running out to say he be back….phooey on BA.

  76. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Nope consonant boy..

BA and company are far better than what we had previously.

BA and company are also much better with Tom Brady, as any organization would be.

BA and company took what was a dumpster fire and made the playoffs 2 out of 3 years and won a Super Bowl… nothing but gratitude for that.

If I had to rebuild it the staff, I might personally do it another way. But the staff here was successful.

And finally , injuries are what did this team in … not a few zoom interviews in a coaches off time.

  77. Jerry Says:

If this team won’t be competing for a super bowl, what’s the point of a 45-year old QB coming back? Put your body though another 17-game regular season with a first place schedule just to maybe get a wild card game again?

  78. Doctor Stroud Says:

Brady’s return will depend on the Bucs commitment to manage the salary cap, bring in free agents, draft players that have an immediate impact, and re-tool the roster. JPP, Brate, and OJ are likely gone. Some players may have to re-negotiate their contracts to get some cap space.

  79. steele Says:

Brady has nothing to be ashamed of. This was eerily like a NE Pats SB loss. Gutty comeback that only he could have willed, and I’m certain he would have found a way to win in OT if Bucs won the coin toss. Some good moments there for others also in 4Q, credit to the ones who made plays, they could have given up and didn’t.

I would have preferred to see him hang it up prior to this season and go out at the top. No reason for him to do it again, except dammit he loves the game.

  80. Aaron Says:

Leftwich leaves for his job and Brady gronk retire to then Evans want a trade again and it’s over

  81. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He’s not done. He said he wanted to go out on a high note…by winning a ring. He knows injuries hurt us this year.

He’ll be back one more year. Just like when the Pats won, then loss, then won again.

On the off chance that he does retire…well, we’ll manage as always.

  82. Bqen green Says:

The only reason it was a game at all is because the Rams couldn’t hang onto the football. Brady’s inability to escape the rush is in many ways what makes him the greatest pocket passer in history. It also hamstrings him in a game like this. Kinda funny, you have a banged up o line and…. The chiefs had backups in there too. Ben’s not sure they could’ve handled them with a healthy line. It’s all about Godwin though. That was effectively the end of the season

  83. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Jerry Says
“If this team won’t be competing for a super bowl, what’s the point of a 45-year old QB coming back? Put your body though another 17-game regular season with a first place schedule just to maybe get a wild card game again?”

I don’t know why anyone would think we wouldn’t compete for a ring next year. We won 13 games this year, plus one in the playoffs.

Our offensive line is great, maybe the best when healthy. Defense is dominant still.

    It came down to injuries.

  84. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    BucsFan81 Says:
“If Brady retires. Someone better call Seattle and get Russel Wilson…”

Hmmn…I hadn’t considered that. And I know Aaron choked, but he is still in the running for MVP…and I suspect he wants out of Green Bay.

  85. Rod Munch Says:

No one other than Brady knows if he’s coming back or not, and I believe him when he says he doesn’t know yet. I suspect it’s going to come down to Licht selling Brady on the idea he’s going to be able keep Godwin, the offensive line in tact, and get someone to replace AB. I have to assume Licht is going to do a full on sales pitch.

If Brady isn’t back, then you blow up the team and start over. Unless… there’s one guy who is available, should be inexpensive enough to help you keep the team in tact, who knows the offense, that’s Winston. No NFC team is going to trade with you, so Rodgers and Wilson are off the table, and there’s no other QB available other than Watson who would be an upgrade over Winston.

I’d love to see it. Winston, who sat and learned behind Brees, who was tied with Brady for QBR when he was hurt, who had, I believe, the best TD to INT ratio in the league when he was hurt, if Brady is going, Winston, is literally, by far, you best bet, unless you can trade for Watson, and I have no idea how you afford that, in addition to not having the picks that Houston would want.

Also if Winston was back, all the jagoff bandwagon riders would hopefully commit Hara Kiri.

  86. Buc1987 Says:

I say because Brady’s still playing at high level that he’ll be back for one more season.

    Anyone want to bet?

We can bet Tom Brady jersey’s….jersey for jersey.

  87. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Rod

Sorry man .. but you’ve been hitting the sauce too hard.

  88. HC Grover Says:

Munch you forget BA all time fave…Gabbert. LOL

  89. bucschamps Says:

bucs just too banged up to make another run. its really hard to win back to back SB.

  90. Buczilla Says:

LOL, these wannabe Adam Schefters are best off ignored. Brady said that he wants to play until he was 45 and I’ll go with that until he says otherwise.

As far as all of the second coming’s of Vince Lombardi on here criticizing the coaching, you do realize that they are the gosh damn coaches that also got us to this point right? Humans make mistakes folks and unfortunately our coaches made plenty of them tonight. From Arian’s, to Brady, all the way down to Zach Triner it was a total team loss.

  91. Todd Says:

Brady will return next season with what we have we win the nfc south division easy and we will resign most of our guys

  92. Jerry Says:

I dont think winning the South next year is a given. Atlanta and Carolina are treading water. But there is already talk the Saints are going to go hard to get a QB like Russell Wilson. And we can’t beat them as it is.

  93. BradyBucs Says:

    Rod Munch – ROFLMAO!

You forgot to mention Winston’s mighty 125 yards passing per game average too. LOL.

  94. Izod Says:

I called this playoff game and the outcome.

I’m gonna ride my Nostradamus streak in predicting the following players gone next year: Brady, Gronk, JPP, Sherman, Suh, possibly Godwin, and one of Fournette or RoJo. And more…. While I’m at it, the Bucs don’t make the playoffs next year.

  95. SPARKY Says:

Brady will play next year because he said till 45 and 100,000 total yards passing. Nobody will read this because my post don’t show up until a hour after I send them, but see you next year.

  96. Brent Clark Says:

On the last Drive of the Rams official never touched the ball to set it for the next play which was a spike, time would have ran out and would have went into overtime.

  97. T REX Says:

    thank you tom

    5-12 next year

Munch you forget BA all time fave…Gabbert. LOL

    ———-

I know, that’s what I’m afraid of, if Brady does retire and Arians really does come back, that he’d think Gabbert is the answer.

And he is, if the question is, how do you get the #1 overall pick.

    Rod Munch – ROFLMAO!

You forgot to mention Winston’s mighty 125 yards passing per game average too. LOL.

    ———-

Winston had them 5-2, threw for 1170 yards, 14 TDs, 3 INTs.

That on a team with no NFL level WRs, not a single one.

You really think the issue is Winston not throwing for yards? He’s one of the few guys who has thrown for over 5000 yards. You Winston haters are deranged if you think Gabbert is the answer when Brady leaves.

  100. bucschamp Says:

he should play next year. he’s the most recognized nfl player in the world. nfl will launch games in Europe he should be there.

  101. captivajim Says:

Brady should leave the Bucs . He had a dam good yr; leading the nfl in TD’s , yardage, etc.. Yes, I think he’d like to play –but too many QB’s stay too long,- its a long list ; Romo , Namath, Rothelsburger, Unitas , Farve , Montana, Bries, to name a few

Brady wanted to win back-to-back SB .. But , He can still walk away having just set lot of records this past season alone. He’s a disciplined guy. Why put up with loosey goosey BA,, over-rated Bowles who can’t call for a prevent defense , a lower football IQ BL- while they go thru some sort of rebuild…

Without Brady none of them would have a ring….

  102. Oneilbuc Says:

Brady played good he fought hard to come back!!! But to be honest the last time we beat the Rams Jamies was the quarterback I know yall hate Jamies but with Brady we couldn’t beat the Rams!! And the Rams had just played in the superbowl the year before!! But now it’s time for Brady to retire he has nothing to prove anymore!! And it’s time for the bucs to develop their own quarterback now !!

  103. Oneilbuc Says:

Just played in a superbowl the year before when Jamies was the quarterback and we won !!

  104. Listnfrmafar Says:

Oneilbucyall, true but Bucs didn’t go to the SB, Brady & the Pat’s did and oh by the way, he WON. Jamais will NEVER say that.

  105. Eddie Marz Says:
