Numbers Tell A Tale Of Cyril Grayson

January 5th, 2022

Sneaky numbers.

Some people are scoffing at the potential impact the immortal Cyril Grayson can have with the Bucs at receiver with Chris Godwin having surgery on his knee and Antonio Brown needing surgery on his head.

Godwin is gone for the year and Brown is gone to… who knows? And Mike Evans has a shaky hamstring and Scotty Miller appears to be deep in the penthouse of Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians’ doghouse.

(With all the injuries at receiver and another receiver wigging out and quitting last Sunday, Miller logged exactly zero offensive snaps on Sunday. Yes, really.)

Denny Carter of NBC Sports Edge had to do a double-take. Studying receivers’ numbers, it nearly slipped past Carter that Grayson, in each of the past two games, has had 81 yards receiving. Not bad for a guy mired on the practice squad just days ago.

Carter noticed also that in Week 16, Grayson not only logged 53 snaps on offense but he ran a passing route on 81 percent of Tom Brady’s dropbacks. That told Carter that Grayson is very much a part of the Bucs’ plans and that, perhaps, he’s no fluke. It also told Carter that something is up with Miller .

You can see a short clip of Carter speaking with colleague Patrick Daughtery about Grayson and Miller in the NBC Sports video below.

Joe has no idea what is going on with Miller but it is jarring to Joe that the Bucs just a few weeks ago had the strongest receiving corps in the NFL and it has since been reduced to using practice squad dudes and guys pulled off the street in November.

I hope he works out. The Titans cut Golden Tate. What’s his story?

  2. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

Grayson has been impressive. I don’t think it’s a fluke. He’s got the speed and if he has learned how to get the DB to do what he wants them too, the sky is the limit.

  3. Smashsquatch Says:

Really want to pump the brakes on the Cyril Grayson love train but my gut is telling me this story is just getting started. CG replaces CG and the Bucs don’t miss a beat?

  4. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

You go with the hot commodity & Grayson is it right now.

  5. Swampbuc Says:

Golden Tate is washed and a head case. At this point the Bucs are going with who has been there practicing. If another receiver goes down in practice or this Sunday, then outside options become necessary.

Time for Perriman to revive his 2019 form. Time for Tyler to be better at running routes.

Time for Scotty to play through his foot pain and find a deep ball.

Time for OJ Howard. Time for Gronl to stop dropping passes in the end zone.

  6. Robert Says:

Always good for someone to make a name for themselves. Go CG!

and Scotty…..me thinks they are letting teams forget about him. If we go to ground and pound we still have 3 burners in CG, Perriman and Scotty to take the top off. Let them lose the two deep for the runs, screens and Brate/Gronk and look out over the top!

  7. Joe in Michigan Says:

Grayson has looked good the last couple games. We’ll see how he looks against good defenses in the playoffs.

  8. Rico210 aka wutdaBucisthis Says:

Man this season has been tough. I’m thinking we’re gonna see more 12 personnel with Gronk n Brate… with a splash of OJ. (Pun intended)
Next man up though. So far so good. 2 game winning TDs has to do some good for his confidence playing with the Goat

  9. pewter941 Says:

Antonio Browns number was 81. Sounds like fate.

  10. Francisco Guzman Says:

I will wait to see if Grayson can get open against legit competition. But him and TJ will really have to step up.

  11. @Hands2theFace Says:

If AB was causing distractions and upsetting the WR room, his absence might be a breath of fresh air for these other guys. This WR crew has been able to do well. Now with AB out, they might be able to focus more and take a big leap. Mike is gonna be Mike. Grayson, Perriman, and Johnson should be solid for TB. Not to mention Gronk, Brate, RBs, etc. I think TB did so much over the years in NE with much less.

    two things:
    1-oponents he has played against
    2-beginer LUCK.
I know we trying to be optimistic for our team, but sometime, soon, the logic shall kick in:
You don’t win SB with practice squad players.
We fear AB sing with a PO team, why? because we know for sure how good he is, we know for sure how he can destroy our D, thats why we fear.
Let aside his mental problem, if some team find the way to make him play for them, why we could NOT??!!
BA hurt our team, BA diminish our chances on PO.

  13. Joe Says:

The Titans cut Golden Tate. What’s his story?

If a playoff team with injuries at wide receiver doesn’t want you in January some 10 days before the playoffs begin…

  14. Coburn Says:

Well if we ever signed him I’d have to stop referring to him as Golden Taint

  15. Swampbuc Says:

    crazyBucs_CL –

Wow man. Do some reading, if you know how.

  16. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

Crazy- You can’t lose control of the locker room or have a coach that feels like he has to bite his tongue and pat someone on the but. Doesn’t work that way and you certainly don’t go far in the playoffs with that garbage in the locker room.

  17. SufferingSince76 Says:

Brown has not been released by the Bucs. Keep up.

We did last year; we won the SB.

  19. SB Says:

Unfortunately AB’s stunt caused addition by subtraction.

  20. JimmyJack Says:

Cyril Grayson had a very good game against Carolina. They are one of the top defenses in all of football so anybody saying he hasent played against legit competition is an ignoramus.

The guy Im more concerned with is Tyler Johnson. We have needed WR depth to step up for a long while and he has been a complete no-show until that last drive. If he dont show something this week I may start looking for Perriman.

  21. Kentucky Buc Says:

Beginners luck ?? Wow, if that’s part of your argument you should just quit posting man.

  22. crazyBucs_CL Says:

    @”..Beginners luck??WOW..”
    ————
why we don’t except that in this blog???!!!since when??
we did when: WFT, Saints (twice), Jets(almost), kicked our a$$es.. right??
But when happen to us, we have to except that we have a “star” ??!!!
I hope we do; remember Miller last year…gone this year….
    It is so hard to find “STARs”; That’s why you try to keep them, when you have them;

  23. Ash Says:

Millers absence isn’t a mystery he isn’t versatile enough to be of any help for the bucs defenses are running two deep safeties taking away big plays and Miller is a one trick guy who doesn’t have the physicality or size to thrive in the middle where things are open and the bucs dont scheme players open very often they depend on the talent of the recievers to get open.

  24. Bobby M. Says:

Grayson is sneaking up on teams due to very little tape and great route running. It won’t shock me if we flip the scrip and go two-TEs with Gronk and Howard, Evans and Fournette….Howard is another guy that could sneak up on teams. I’m guessing we stick with the same old stuff next week against Carolina….then maybe switch it up the first week of the. playoffs at home. Fingers crossed our David, JPP and Shaq come back on fresh and on fire similar to what White did late last season.

  25. Kentucky Buc Says:

    😂 just clownish

  26. Francisco Guzman Says:

We need fournette back badly and healthy.

  27. SPARKY Says:

LOOK back at the receivers Brady had in all his super bowls. You can’t tell me what we have left on this team of receivers ain’t taller, faster, and more athletic than anything he’s had before. We will only go as far as our defense takes us.

  28. Nano107 Says:

Miller is hurt his injury is worst that’s they thought
Get Fournette Shaq Jpp Lavonte we good for playoffs

  29. Beeej Says:

Grayson ALSO does the 40 in 4.33, which offsets a LOT of inexperience. The route he caught the TD on is the same route Scotty has caught so many on

  30. bucschamp Says:

I believe in Grayson, OJ not so much

  31. Francisco Guzman Says:

SPARKY the scheme is different and those guys in New England where clutch. They had a good coaching staff where they game plan well. Can this coaching staff do the same?

  32. JimmyJack Says:

Does anybody think we arent seeing Miller because Grayson is taking his snaps?

  33. Alanbucsfan Says:

The backfield produced 62 yards rushing and 45 yards receiving vs Jets – not bad but not Fournette numbers.
Once Bowles made halftime adjustments, Bucs held Jets to 7 2nd half points- without 3 pro bowl starters.
Bucs without Godwin and Brown will lower expectations on offense to 22-25 points/ game during playoffs. But with fresh and hopefully healthy Barrett, David and serviceable JPP back, the D should be pretty good.
Arians should order the entire team gargle and spray listerine and povidone iodine up their noses twice/ day … lol.

  34. Biff Barker Says:

Those expecting OJ to show up in the playoffs need to put down the glass pipe!

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

“if some team find the way to make him play for them, why we could NOT??!!”

CrazyBuc it’s because AB does NOT want to play for us. Apparently we did not kiss his arse well enough.

Would you like to take one for the team and pucker up?

  36. Eddie Marz Says:

Grayson is for real. Jezz he just caught the game winning touchdown three days ago. He’s making plays and is a deep threat. More power to him. As far as Miller is concerned, I think BA said in the pre season you can’t be a one trick phony in this league and the other teams have adjusted to his game. Remember that interception when the defender got to the spot that was supposed to be for Miller. He’s too limited, has to expand his game if he’s going to play. GOBUCS!
