“Hey, I Don’t Need Any Excuses. You’re An NFL Receiver”

January 23rd, 2022

Ramps up intensity in playoffs.

What makes Tom Brady great? Well, you could probably sum it up that Brady is fanatically driven not to leave anything to chance, not even the smallest detail.

His standards are sky-high and he is drill-sergeant tough on reserve receivers because he wants them to not just reach their potential, but he wants to know who he can trust and when.

(Interestingly, former NFL suit Michael Lombardi, who used to work with the Belicheats when Brady was there, speaks of this trust factor between Brady and receivers often on his podcast.)

Joe wrote all about how hard Brady was on the immortal Cyril Grayson.

Jenna Laine of ESPN has a long-form story on the subject with tons of research and sources, including Grayson.

Grayson added that once when he was griping about the field conditions and the sun being in his eyes — neither went over well with Brady in the least — Brady began to get frustrated with Grayson and barked, “Hey, I don’t need any excuses. You’re an NFL receiver.”

Laine details how Brady is laser-focused at all times after Thanksgiving. It’s something he learned from Bill Belicheat, who told him how teams prepare for playoff runs by amping up their play. If players don’t match that intense play late in the season or don’t go beyond that, they will be watching the playoffs on TV just like most Americans.

How intense is Brady? Well, he holds a team meeting on Fridays. Additionally, Brady will hold an additional offensive team meeting on the same day before a game in which Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians has a full team meeting.

What does Brady do in his offensive team meeting? He goes over every play on that game’s playsheet so each teammate is well aware of his responsibilities and expectations. That sometimes is over 100 plays a game;.

Folks, that is some kind of serious detail.

It’s why Brady is the best and it’s hard not to trust Brady to find a way to get the job done.

Oh, and another cool nugget from Laine: When the Bucs beat the WTF to open the 2020 playoffs, Brady was frothing at the mouth to play the slimy Saints again. Why? He badly wanted revenge from losing both regular season meetings.

Now who embarrassed the Bucs in Week 3 this season?

    Great stuff!

Man, the TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS two wins from going to the Super Bowl two years in a row. Three wins from being repeat champion.

First thing first though. Got to get that one tonight.

Whatever happens, what a run the past two years. Weird to think that the Brady era might (might) be over after this game… but what a ride. Hope they find a way…

  2. Tim in PSL Says:

We are so lucky to have Brady, for as long as he’s here. It’s immeasurable the habits he’s imparting on or younger players.

  3. Cleanhouse Says:

Yeah I used to be a Winston homer and still root for the guy, but F him, Brady is the very best and this has made it all worth while watching the Bucs since 1986.
Let’s take out these scumbag Rams who have had our number in the playoffs.
    Let’s have some revenge! LFG

  4. Man Child Says:

[It is not a Cyril Grayson story. So much more than that. Joe didn’t even know the story existed until he was tipped off by a Los Angeles-based Van Halen biographer and music journalist. Joe learned a lot by reading it. You can too if you choose to be slightopen-minded. — Joe]

  5. Daryl Green Says:

wasn’t feeling a little shady on Monday.

It’s the first time I’ve heard this story so, thanks, Joe.

No, the TB’ s meetings are cited from Mc Coy.

  11. Jeagan1999 Says:

TB12 realizes that “greatness” is a journey, not a destination, and that true greatness means never leaning on your past glories, but rising to each new challenge! That’s why he is, and will continue to Ben the best ever!

  12. Jmarkbuc Says:

Imagine how much the league and its players have changed since he started. I’m sure when he started he wouldn’t have to tell a WR that sort of thing. Thank goodness he’s doing it here, now.

  13. kyle Says:

biff barker^ i agree, the talking hairdo, drama laine is annoying. sorry

  14. Listnfrmafar Says:

Do we even know who Brady is throwing to today?

  15. bucfan34 Says:

Need a swarming defense today!! LFG BUCS!!!

  16. JVZ Says:

After watching yesterday’s upset games, there is no doubt in my mind the Buc’s can get it done. Steven A said his man A. Rodgers was going to win the SB this year, then followed that with if the Buc’s beat the Rams today they will go on to win the Super Bowl.
What happened to the arrogant big mouth last night? Ha! That meant as much to me as the Buc’s winning it all.
League MVP? Ha! LMVP’s win playoff games. Rodgers can’t win playoff games. Is that “Double Jeapardy” boys and girls?

  17. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I just hope the rest of the team can rise up to match Brady’s level of play.

  18. alton d green Says:

can’t help but wonder how many passes/touchdowns Kupp will receive before Bowles double teams him. He should be double teamed on the airplane to Tampa

  19. Bqen green Says:

What’s the ole saying, pressure makes diamonds. It also busts pipes. Yes these guys are NFL receivers, but when you become so scared of dropping the football, or not performing at Brady standard, it can mess with confidence. Brady was famous in NE for shutting out recievers that dropped a pass. Joe Montana had a different tactic when players dropped passes, he blamed himself. It’s just a different way to generate confidence in young players. Ben has always had a difficult time with how Brady handled young, inexperienced WRs nothing was ever his fault, even if it was. Go ask Jacoby Myers about it.

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

Get’em right Tom. NO EXCUSES baby.

  21. Ex pats fan Says:

Dump Tyler Johnson. So disappointed in him.

  22. Aaron Says:

He didn’t want to play the saints he really would be wanting to retire

  23. Frank Says:

It was starting to look like Super bowl 51 but are defense went back to how they played in the first half
