Richard Sherman Is A Pro’s Pro

December 13th, 2021

Whatever is needed.

Yeah, Richard Sherman, the Bucs veteran corner and now a sometimes safety, may at times look like a shell of his former self. But you cannot tell Joe that his attitude and professionalism is not rubbing off on his young teammates.

Sherman has played in three Super Bowls, winning one. And last night Joe saw something that was hard to believe for a veteran like Sherman who now has 37 picks in his career and, honestly, doesn’t need to stand behind anyone in line for anything.

On a punt return team, there was Sherman. Right beside a bunch of young players and reserves.

Think about this: Sherman comes here and all of a sudden because of injuries he’s rushed on the field. Maybe rushed too hard? While sitting out a game during his rehab — Bucs cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross out with The Sickness — Sherman steps in as an acting assistant coach, headset and all, calling formations. Whatever was needed to help win.

Then, when Sherman comes off injured reserve, he begins cross-training at safety. You know, whatever is needed.

Then last night, Joe sees Sherman on special teams. If the team has a need, Sherman is all over it.

Sherman’s skills may no longer be razor-sharp, but this professionalism and dedication has to be rubbing off, especially the defensive backs. They see a guy who could be copping a ‘tude and instead, he’s willing to pitch in everywhere.

Whatever is needed to win.

A pro’s pro.

Yeah, Sherman is having a limited impact on the field. Off the field, Joe thinks Sherman is having a major impact.

Contrast what Sherman is doing to a guy the Bucs unfortunately once had to beg to return punts.

well of course Sherman should do it. Brady can only run 11 yards.

  2. adam from ny Says:

i saw sherm get practically juked out of his shoes in the second half on one play…and said out loud “sherm is washed up”…

but yeah he also does a lot of good things…

becoming the bucs jack of all trades is a smart move from a smart man…

way to go sherm…the guys back there need a vet’s presence and a swiss army knife to pick ’em up

  3. Greg Says:

Sad that a guy getting paid very handsomely to do his job gets flowing praise for shutting up and doing his job. Like he is the exception, not the rule.

  4. Swampbuc Says:

Too bad the Bucs couldn’t cash in on his interception with a minute to go in the first half. That could have been the dagger but instead it was the door opening for the beginning of the Bucs second half collapse that led to the needlessly dramatic ending of what should have been a much easier win.

It’s the Bucs, it’s what this team does — build a big lead and then cough it up. Of course these guys came out winning where Bucs of the past would have eaten the L.

  5. Joe in Michigan Says:

Swampbuc: The same Bucs team that you said would go 6-11 and lose the rest when they were 6-3? They’ve won 4 straight now, you can complain all you want, but a win is a win.

  6. Spicili Says:

Greg, in light of our defensive backfield getting healthy Sherman has found ways to contribute, not stand on his previous accolades or salary.

  7. westernbuc Says:

Almost anyone compared to DJax is a pro’s pro.

  8. ModHairKen Says:

Stop talking about him like he’s an invalid. He had the only interception yesterday.

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

He’ll get more comfortable with more playing time back there. Sherman’s a smart football player. It’s nice to see players that have that “team first” mentality.

  10. Buxfanintx Says:

Nice article since you’ve trashed him from the get-go
Joe never trashed Sherman. Joe trashed his play, which has not been very good, but ok for a guy making next to nothing. –Joe

  11. Bucsalltheway Says:

Sherman shouldn’t be on the field…he was late to every throw made…I think it’s a slight to Andrew Adam’s who plays so much faster than sherm

  12. Beeej Says:

I sadly remember James Wilder on the Redskin punt team at the end of his storied career

  13. Ash Says:

Depth at cb is atrocious when Dean didn’t come back after the first half the defense seemed completely broken

  14. Wild Bill Says:

A lot of youth on the Bucs defensive backs. An experienced vet like Sherman can be a boost for the young guys and share his football knowledge like an assistant coach. His physical skills have declined but his experience rubs off. The early injuries likely due to inactivity were a set back but being a respected elder player/coach is a boost for the young guys.

  15. Bird Says:

Lets be honest with ourselves. We got him for cheap especially since he will not get escalators for missing time

Just please no more looks at safety. He may be a ball hawk but to slow these days. And he was never know as a hitter / tackler

But glad he is contributing in other ways

Yup. You criticized a comment about having brady on a pitch count to keep his shoulder throwing for a few more years here.

And just recently , You said bucs would not win another game. Now thats a bad take. 😂

What’s happening with the Bucs and the Lightning is a great example of the focus of veteran players: they want to win with a class organization. Sherman, Suh, AB, Gronk are all here to win, as are Corey Perry, P-E Bellemare & Zach Bogosian with the Bolts. Living in a beautiful city with fantastic weather doesn’t hurt, either.

  18. BT-Tampa Says:

The juke from Allen told me a number of things:
CB skills don’t automatically transfer to safety.
    Allen is an athelete.
Sherman is either still new to the position or washed up. I am giving him the doubt on such a small sample.
AWJ is ridiculously good – he stops runners practically every time. Earlier in the game, he took down Allen even though he (AWJ) was surrounded by blockers.

Yes… things could suck more lol

The premise of this article cannot be talked about enough 🙌

  21. #8 Says:

Sherm is an excellent depth dude period. Bucs are lucky to have him.
Plenty of other guys screw up & miss plays also.
Thanks to Sherm for doing whatever the team needs & being a good teammate.

  22. DBS Says:

So Allen has not done this to other players? And of course he did not out run a bunch of our “younger” players last night either. Allen is fast and shifty. He will juke and out run a lot of players for a long time.

  23. LakelandSteve Says:

Sherman was a great pickup for the Bucs. What he adds to this team is immeasurable. There is still a lot of youth in the secondary and they can learn from a guy like Sherman.

  24. deuceswild78 Says:

team player who whiffs putting the bills square into FG position with enough time to score the winning TD had they had any balls. don’t need to see this team player anywhere but special teams or coaching on the sidelines

  25. Kiko Says:

Richard the whole game had an interception, missed an open field tackled and got juked out of his shoes and recovered well to prevent a play. Rich had two bad plays on triple the amount of snaps yet everyone says he play well? Carlton gave up 3-4 big plays and a TD, Sean gave a up a big TD. For all Sherman’s flaws (he just got back this week, and the last time he played he hadn’t been on a football field in six months and had to start 3 games in 12 days) dude never gave up a tuddy while being targeted 13 times.

  26. Tony Says:

The ballboy should get the game ball. See how fast he moved once the game was over so they could get that ball? He didn’t want them to lose that one. He should at least get a ball.😀

Glad I am not the only one who thinks swamps takes stink.

  28. unbelievable Says:

Dang Joe that article about DJax was giving me flashbacks of nightmares lol.

Dirk seemed like a good guy, but it painfully obvious he was in way over his head as a head coach. Zero accountability.

  29. orlbucfan Says:

Any dude who is a Stanford graduate has some serious gray matter between his ears. Sherman is smart and a pro who helps out with coaching. You can bet the young guys respect him. Djax = barf. Glad he’s gone.

  30. Eddie Marz Says:

BA is still playing him, so he must be doing something right. Sometimes a player like Sherman bring more to the team than meets the eye. If he was productive why would he still be playing. GO BUCS!

  31. Eddie Marz Says:

    Wasn’t productive!

  32. TampabayDJ82 Says:

ASH – I agree , when Dean was out for the second half it showed up big time !!
