Chris Godwin No. 3

December 3rd, 2021

Underrated?

We all know Bucs receiver Chris Godwin is damn good. But how good? Well, let’s see what NextGen Stats has to say.

Nick Shook of NFL.com decided to rank the top-10 most reliable receivers and Shook leaned heavily on NextGen Stats to determine his list.

… He has hauled in 76.1 percent of his 88 targets this season. Only three players have a higher catch rate among receivers with at least 60 targets. He’s been highly reliable in the short game, with a catch rate over expected of +4.4 percent on targets of fewer than 10 air yards this season (sixth-best among WRs, minimum 40 such targets), and he’s racked up 15 receptions when in the red zone, which ranks second in the league. Tom Brady loves to throw the fade to Evans in the end zone, but Tampa Bay tends to get into that position by first throwing to Godwin. It’s the right idea, as the Bucs have learned.

With the easily-offended crowd screaming at the Bucs to unload furniture-tossing, bicycle-throwing receiver Antonio Brown, that just makes Godwin’s re-signing next offseason an even higher priority.

Mike Evans and Godwin have been one of the most formidable one-two punches at receiver in the NFL since Godwin was drafted in 2017. Joe would really, really hate to lose Godwin. And Joe suspects, so too would Tom Brady.

TB12 is not going to care, if they win the SB this year, why would he ever come back? Especially since it’s more doubtful Gronk returns. I know many are down on AB right now but WHEN he returns he will take pressure off both Godwin & Evan’s which sounds pretty awesome for the Bucs and dangerous for their opposition.

  2. Alanbucsfan Says:

If Brady comes back next year, Bucs will likely franchise tag Godwin again- expensive, but worth it.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

THIS is the year Bucs go for broke. We’ve got a lot of older players right now (many of whom won’t be back next year), we’ve pushed a lot of salary CAP down the road (mortgaged the future?), and next year’s team almost surely won’t look anything like what we have right now.

BUT … We’re in excellent shape (8-3) right now and have several key players on the cusp of returning. We’re playing good ball & if last year is any indication, it’ll get better from here on out. As Admiral David Farragut said … ‘Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead’.

  4. Anonymous Says:

CDIII and Chris are huge priority do doubt, going to be hard to let some key starters go. But those two are young DOGS

  5. #8 Says:

If TB12 comes back, so will Gronk & each will earn less.
JPP sadly will be done and/or far, far, far cheaper. Same with Suh.
    OJ is gone.
There is room to pay Godwin-
I’m more curious what Lenny will command when he becomes a fierce TD scoring animal for the rest of the season.
    And the O-line of course.

  6. David Says:

Godwin is definitely signing long term. If they don’t get that done it’s idiotic. He’s the youngest receiver of the bunch. I also think Brady plays one more season

  7. Bob in valrico Says:

    Thanks DR
Its nice to put a little history with the school in ST Pete thats been named after
    him.

  8. Bob in valrico Says:

Godwin is a player that the Bucs can’t do without. Great team player that does
everything equally well. There sure seems there might have been a big Heinz Ward influence on him with his PA and Penn state background. He might still have some untapped skills the Bucs haven’t displayed yet. Punt returns maybe?

  9. Ash Says:

They didn’t mortgage the future lol that’s silly rams certainly did but the bucs are fine. Cg and Davis are a very high priority for them. I think they sign cg long term and tag Davis.

  10. PSL Bob Says:

I said it last year, and I’ll say it again this year. No way Licht and BA (if he returns) will let Godwin walk. They should be working toward a long-term deal and if that can’t be achieved this year under the CAP, franchise the man (again)!

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Ash … Take a closer look at next year’s salary CAP, and especially at the dead CAP numbers vs what the players are making this year. It doesn’t hurt real bad UNLESS the player retires. Drew Brees’ situation with the Saints is a good example of what happens. Even after renegotiating his salary (it dropped), Saints are still paying Brees a little over $11 mil for 2021 & also 2022. An example of ‘mortgaging the future’.

Bucs are in a similar position with several of our older players (like Brady, Suh, Gronk, etc). IF they end up retiring, we still have to pay them because essentially their contracts don’t retire with them. GMs can play all kinds of games with salary CAP & contracts, but eventually the player will make his money.

  12. SB Says:

CG led the league last yr in catch% at 77%. Looks like it may be a repeat!!

  13. SickofLosing Says:

Why would Brady come back next year if the Bucs win the championship again this year. Simple reason really, to accomplish something that has never been done in the superbowl era, 3-peat. He already is the greatest qb in NFL history, what better way to end your career than to completely rewrite history and achieve what has so far been impossible?

  14. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Getting close to Godwin dropsies/fumbles time of year.

  15. Listnfrmafar Says:

The question is, will Godwin come back if Brady doesn’t? I remember how enamored Godwin was with Mahomes during the SB. He said ” That guys a magician!” If Brady goes and Chiefs make a play for him, he be gone.

  16. chris l Says:

easily offended crowd? what about if anyone ever disses jameis winston. NOT america’s quarterback

  17. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

My alma mater! Let’s Go Bucs. Take care of business.

Getting close to Godwin dropsies/fumbles time of year.

Got some research to back up this ridiculous statement barring last year where he was playing with multiple pins in his fingers?
I would love to see it.

  19. SB Says:

    *finger*

  20. unbelievable Says:

    @ Listnfrmafar

Brady would come back after winning the SB this year bc he’s already done the back-to-back thing.

But no one has ever accomplished a 3-peat, and he would 1000% want to try.

  21. TampabayDJ82 Says:

Defense Rules – ABSOLUTELY CORRECT !! Thanks for actually knowing what your talking about before you post it .. This IS THE YEAR ! BUCS WENT ALL IN ON THIS YEAR , that’s why I didn’t understand why they didn’t make better efforts to get some help in the secondary by trading draft picks , even if it was our FIRST , SECOND, OR ALL OF THEM !! If we’re trying to WIN NOW , WHAT DOES IT MATTER ? If we win the Super Bowl AGAIN , Brady WILL retire . So will GRONK and BA .. Next years team will look nothing like this team ! THAT’S FACT. Way too many free agents to bring back.. I hope Godwin is one that does . But JPP , Suh , and MANY more probably won’t be. NOW LET’S RUN THE TABLE AND GET ANOTHER SUPER BOWL WIN THIS YEAR AND ENJOY EVERY LAST MOMENT . Great time to be a BUCS fan !!

  22. TampabayDJ82 Says:

SB- Gotta love the FAKE FAN’S that find “OR IMAGINE” in that guys case , SOMETHING to complain about !! Maybe Scotty & Fat Antonio are still big Michael Clayton fans.. lmao … GO BUCS

  23. daniel Da Man Says:

Spend on Goodwin. Please keep AB on the bench the rest of the season then trade or release the guy.
He is a real bad person with no redeeming qualities. He needs head shrink healing.
