Report: Byron Leftwich On Bears’ Head Coaching Radar

November 28th, 2021

Offensive coordinator Bryon Leftwich

NFL fans have heard all about the mess in Chicago, where credible reports emerged claiming Bears head coach Matt Nagy would be fired after their Thanksgiving game against the Lions.

That hasn’t happened yet, but it doesn’t mean Nagy is safe and the Bears aren’t deep into sniffing his replacement.

Per well-plugged-in Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Bears have Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich on their short list.

If they make a move, the Bears are expected to consider Tampa offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, among others, and it has been well-known throughout the industry for years how high Bears ownership is on Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald, who numerous NFL teams have pursued in recent years. However, sources said that Fitzgerald, who recently signed a big extension to remain at the school he also played for, would not be interested in a jump to the Bears.

No surprise to hear of Leftwich in the mix. The Bears have a young quarterback in Justin Fields and Leftwich not only played the position, he’s a disciple of the Quarterback Whisperer and spent years around Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady. Plus he’s commanding the NFL’s most successful offense through the past three seasons.

That doesn’t mean Leftwich can sell an ownership group on his ability to cobble together a strong staff or handle the tough Chicago media, but it should get him an interview.

  1. August 1976 Buc Says:

Is there a succession plan in place Joe?
I am not advocating BL as a head coach of the Bucs when BA goes off into the sunset, just asking the question.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  2. Jmarkbuc Says:

The Bears cannot get out of their own way. From Nagy to Left foot? 😂😂😂

  3. SOEbuc Says:

Leftwich may be a good OC (most time), but he doesn’t have what it takes to build a failing team.

  4. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

They’ll go with McDaniels for obvious reasons !😅🤣😂

  5. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Good Riddens!!!!!

  6. Jbeachbuc Says:

Lefty ain’t going nowhere except to BA’ s office , to Chicago?? Yeah no.

  7. DoooshLaRue Says:

Well of course he’s on their radar.
    It’s the law right?

  8. Brandon Says:

Our offense could be much better. Most games we have a 3 to 1 pass run ratio in the first half… and we wonder why our offense sputters and D is left on the field. We also leave the far superior RB on the sidelines. Rojo should be in and getting lots of carries. Not impressed with BL and BA play calling and personnel groupings.

  9. Georger Says:

Hire Leftwich, what do we get a second or third comp pick

  10. LVMYBUCS Says:

    Please go

  11. Alanbucsfan Says:

Who would want to live in Chicago today???

  12. D Marski Says:

BL will be here until TB and BA retire
Then he’ll take over the HC duties. Hopefully, DC TB
will stay here in TB. Only time will tell.

  13. August 1976 Buc Says:

Rojo played his way to the bench is mistakes, whiffing on pass protection, dropped passes, head scratching running out of bounds before the first down marker. If Brady does not TRUST you, then you are not getting into his huddle consistently.
He is an excellent runner, but not by any means a complete back, that is trusted by Brady and the coaching staff to be counted on in the clutch. Again Rojo has obvious talent, but there is a lot more to it. This was Rojos job last year, but he could not keep it.

    GO BUCS!!!

  14. D-Rome Says:

Leftwich will never survive Chicago. He will be forced to try and win with Fields and that’s a disaster waiting to happen. I know there are only 32 HC jobs but he needs to wait for the right opportunity and the Bears job isn’t it.

  15. webster Says:

Alot of u bums are idiots. Soebuc how do you know BL doesnt have what it takes to build a team? While you are at it, please tell me the lotto numbers for next week nostradomis. If the nfl can hire the guy in detriot etc then surely BL haa earned the right to suck as a head coach too. Funny how greg olsen who played tight end at a high level in the nfl today on the broadcast raved about his meeting with BL and raved about his insight on the game said he would be a good head coach. Funny how a lot of commentators say the same thing but i guess you idiot buc fans know more about the nfl locker room then olsen smdh.

  16. TheBucsAnthem Says:

That Bears whole organization is a complete disaster……..been that way forever

I’d rather watch the puckey browns play then that midway disaster

  17. Rod Munch Says:

Perfect fit for the Bears, perfect fit.

Just wait until he comes out in a wishbone and runs 40 times a game, and it’s only 40 times because they’ll be punting so much.

If Leftwich doesn’t have Arians forcing him to open things up, he’s ultra predictable and ultra conservative. Anyone who doesn’t believe that, just wait and see what happens.

I know Arians doesn’t want to call the offense himself, but I’d love to see what a competent play caller could do. Even with as good as this offense is, it always feels like it’s in spite of Leftwich, never because of him.

  18. Lamarcus Says:

Lol. Such a Bears move. Go ahead

  19. Swampbuc Says:

Anthem + put down the glue bottle, your short bus friends are feeling the effects.

  20. adam from ny Says:

lefty won’t get a head coaching job until he switches from a “thug hat” to a “dad ball cap”

  21. Destinjohnny Says:

You get one shot at the brass ring
I don’t think I’d want my shot with the bears…

  22. Shark Coast Tactical Says:

I think they all stay until Brady leaves. Why break up the Beatles?

  23. DaBux Says:

    Byron, it’s like crack:

    Just say no.

Wait for BA to retire, please.

  24. Youngbucs Says:

All these BL haters have one thing in common! Winston stans the usual names smh.

  25. Architek Says:

One of the worst jobs in the league. Stay and get paid and win in Tampa.

  26. ClodHopper Says:

    Career suicide

  27. adam from ny Says:

i still say justin fields is not a long term solution as an nfl quarterback…

mcdaniels isn’t going there to coach up a fields type quarterback when he’s spent a career around brady and brady type qbs…

byron might be just dumb enough to go risk it for a big chunk of biscuits…

hopefully he’s smarter than that tho – he’s in a real cushy spot rn

  28. Buc1987 Says:

    Rooney Rule.

  29. Pewter power Says:

Former first round pick and a quarterback in the nfl, how is handling media all of a sudden something he can’t do. No one knows what he’d be as a head coach but he’ll probably be successful if he’s not the play caller and he’s allowed to coach the way ba does it. I wouldn’t mind seeing a mike tomlin like success story for him. I just hope we have a plan for the Bucs when Brady and ba retire. He’d have a decent offense and defense in Chicago

  30. Rod Munch Says:

    Pewter power Says:
…I just hope we have a plan for the Bucs when Brady and ba retire.

    ———

The team has mortgaged its future, in terms of the cap, to extend this window as long as possible.

I’m A-OK with that. Anyone who isn’t, should go chum up some water in the gulf, then put on a seal suit, and go for a swim.

  31. Anonymous Says:

Interesting the same people who assume Coach Leftwich can’t succeed as a head coach also think Justin Fields can’t make it as a NFL QB. The reason is so obvious Ray Charles could see it. Thankfully time has past you people by, and history will prove you wrong. But you can’t change what you are.

  32. Anonymous Says:

These bucs fans talking crazy, wasn’t saying nothing a few years ago before brady showed up, like tampa is a destination for players. Before brady showed up that place was a mess and will go back there soon.

  33. Jim in PH Says:

Give me Brady & I would be a pretty decent O/C. Lefty could not fix Winston. He was playing good before the injury with the Saints coaching working with him.

  34. B-Bro Says:

I’m surprised he wasn’t gone after last season

  35. B-Bro Says:

Todd Boyles will probably be scooped up after this season too

  36. Listnfrmafar Says:

Let him go, he’s having problems coaching one of the most potent offenses to ever play in the league.

  37. SOEbuc Says:

Webster…It’s called a hunch dumbass. Where was this praise for Byron two weeks ago when everyone said he totally bombed against WFT?

  38. Ash Says:

Take him you shouldnt have to have three number one receivers to be effective. Too many times offense has stalled out turnovers and short fields won the Colts game.
