Confirmation Of The Changed Bucs Offense

November 19th, 2021

Remember when there was a lot of chatter last season about how Tom Brady and the Bucs’ offensive gurus would or would not change the offense?

Brady was going to have to learn the Tampa Bay offense, Bucco Bruce Arians said, because you don’t change a playbook for 10 guys when you can have just one guy (Brady) responsible for learning and adapting. Of course, it also was acknowledged that Brady would change things because, well, he’s The Goat.

So how much did the offense change?

Consider that offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich said this week that newly-returning receiver Breshad Perriman, who was a key cog in the Bucs’ 2019 season, had a challenging time stepping back into the Bucs offense.

“I’m quite sure that it was tough on him even though it was some of the stuff similar [to before], it’s not similar,” Leftwich said of Perriman. “That was tough to have him go out there and be ready, but he was ready.”

Yeah, Joe gets that Perriman only had a week to prepare for his first Bucs game in a season and a half, but Leftwich’s words speak to significant change to the offense after Brady arrived.

Joe wonders if Perriman played Sunday against Washington and wondered to himself, “Damn, the offense was better with Jameis.”

At the risk of repeating myself, I will state again 2 issues I have with Bryan Leftwitch.
His play calling is very predictable especially on 1st Downs (running up the middle on 1st and 10, 70% of the time is known as predictable).
His ability to make halftime changes to the offensive game plan, appears to be non existent.
He seems to take the position that “indecision is the key to flexibility”.
At this point, I’d be willing to chance having the hot dog vender call the offensive plays.

  2. Listnfrmafar Says:

If all your looking for is grip it and rip it, probably so. If you watched last night’s game, the Atlanta defense had no idea what was coming at them. Creative, good mix of run pass that confused the crap out of them. Reading all these posts from BA, player & staff interviews there is a noticeable difference between Belichick and BA (other than BA couldn’t wear his hoodie) is after a game win or lose Belichick does his post game interview and either says we need to work on all phases we weren’t good we are on to the Titans or Players played great it was a good win, we’re on to the Titans. Belichick lives in the present. BA is still answering question on the WFT loss. He lives in the past and future (playoffs & Pro Bowl.)How come he isn’t talking about preparing for the Giants?

  3. Listnfrmafar Says:

Vinny, BA said halftime is for bathroom breaks not adjustments. Yes, he really did say that!

  4. Greg G Says:

This narrative from the comments sections that our coaches don’t adjust, are predictable, or are not effective is lazy couch quarterback observations. The stats and the results just don’t bear out any of those arguments.

For the past 3 years we’ve had a top 5 offense, this year we had the #1 offense if football until last week.

Our halftime adjustments, even in losses, bear out that we’re improving from 1st half to second. In NO we scored 2 of our 3 touchdowns in the second half. In Washington – we scored our only touchdowns in the second half. Last year against the Chargers, Chiefs, Falcons, etc. all significant improvements in offensive output from first half to second.

I’m not saying that our coaching staff is above getting called out. I also wish they ran more play action, I wish they ran less up the middle on first downs, but really?!? Our none-expert, fan based opinions are really gonna hold any merit in the face of the ridiculous output this offense has achieved? That talk is utter nonsense to me.

  5. PassingThru Says:

I tried to discuss it earlier. Brady routes are meant to be flexible, that’s an artifact from New England. Defensive coverages shift, and you have to grab what the defense is giving you and not fall into a coverage trap. If you were a smart receiver like AB, Edelman, Gronk, or Moss, you learn it quickly. If you don’t (Ochocinco) you just die in that offense.

That’s why I warned not to expect much out of Perriman; too little practice time, no snaps, and thus no chemistry/communication developed with Brady.

Joe, this article should be put in moderation for a comment like that. LOL.

  7. Tommy boy Says:

Everyone needs to chill!! These two losses are probably the best thing that could have happened. I would rather lose two in a row around the half way point. That way we’re not bumped in the first round of the playoffs. Things will come together like last year and the injured players will return at the perfect time.

  8. Tommy boy Says:

All this finger pointing is childish. Divided we are exposed together unstoppable. Where’s the moral? This sight lacks luster!!!

  9. Tommy boy Says:

Oh, and one last thing! Better offense with Winston!!! WTF I hope that’s a joke?! Seems selfish to me. Tampa finally gets a miracle and gets the goat! He wins them the Lombardi his first year! Now a few bad games and people are questioning his ability to lead an offense? Wow. JOE lay off the scotch!!

  10. Aceofaerospace Says:

I thought it was lovie smith that said halftime was for bathroom breaks. It was Commander Schiano. –Joe

  11. Architek Says:

None of us are qualified to speak to the state or production of the Bucs offense. We simply don’t have enough information to do anything more than make opinions.

Not a chance! This particular Joe has a love affair with that guy.

No joke, and it’s not scotch’s fault. He’s serious, and even while sober, his love for this guy is seemingly limitless…smh

  13. Beastmode Says:

I think injuries are the culprit with a decline in continuity and momentum. They are a fun team to watch when all the pieces are healthy together. They just seem to exude with team confidence.

  14. Swampbuc Says:

Permian couldn’t make the Lions or Bears rosters. He is garbage. Took the mo yes and went soft. It happens to a lot of guys. Look at the way the Bucs front 7 is playing for example.

  15. Ben Says:

Lol we won the Super Bowl last year. Everybody calm down. We’re playing with house money for the next few years. Just gotta let the Brady era play itself out. Everybody was panicking at this point last year and we won. RELAX

  16. Kris Says:

They should have went after Odell Beckham bc they knew how serious Gronk and A.B.’s injuries were. But I can’t believe this garbage reporter had the audacity to say the offense was better w James!! You should be fired and never write again bc you clearly either don’t know football or your completely blind and if that’s the case I’m sorry.!! 😂

  17. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Lstnfrmafar

Atlanta’s problem last night wasn’t defense.. they actually played well enough to win.

    ATL’s offense is terrible.

  18. JimmyJack Says:

Vinny you comment is made up nonsense. The Bucs dont run 70% on first down, youre spreading BS.

    Here are the actual numbers:

    1ST DOWN PLAYCALLING.

    Redskins- 7run, 13pass
    Saints- 9run, 16pass
    Bears-18run, 14pass
    Eagles-20run, 14pass
    Dolphins-17run 17pass
    Patriots-18run,13pass

You clearly have an axe to grind with Byron Leftwitch and will resort to lies over it.

  19. TampabayDJ82 Says:

Greg G – Well said !! GO BUCS

  20. firethecannons Says:

obviously Joe, Perriman knows the Bucs won the superbowl and it was better with Brady as opposed to Jameis, he knows the Bucs were going nowhere with Jameis except back to their berth inside Buccaneers cove.

  21. Oneilbuc Says:

We are going to crush the Gaints !!!
