Michael Lombardi On Tom Brady’s Mobility: “My Lord, 44 years-old?”

October 9th, 2021

Call him “nimble.”

Few talking heads know Bucs quarterback Tom Brady like a former Patriots suit, Michael Lombardi.

The former coffee fetcher for Bill Walsh, Al Davis and Belicheat was speaking this week on his popular podcast “GM Shuffle” and Brady came up. Lombardi was a member of the Belicheats’ front office in 2014 and 2015. So he’s a fair source.

While watching last week’s win over the Belicheats, Lombardi seemed to think Brady has actually improved in one area.

A quick step back: Joe wrote of being surprised when Bucs 2019 training camp because Brady was so “nimble” and Joe had only seen and heard of a statue-like figure in the pocket.

Joe even documented seing Brady throwing from rollouts.

A couple of days later, Peter King of NBC Sports came to Bucs training camp and he too wrote of being surprised by seeing a “nimble” Brady.

On Sunday, Lombardi seemed stunned by how mobile Brady has become.

“I thought Brady moved in the pocket better than I’ve seen him,” Lombardi said. “My Lord, 44 years old? He eluded a couple of rushes. Kyle Van Noy had him for a sack. He got out of it. He scrambled around.

“Now he doesn’t make plays on the move but I thought he did a pretty good job in the pocket.”

It’s unclear what Lombardi meant saying Brady doesn’t make plays moving. Joe is assuming he meant throwing on the run, and Brady sure did scramble for a key first down in the second half.

But yeah, Brady is much more mobile and “nimble” than Joe ever thought and that has continued this season.

No, the guy doesn’t look like or play like a 44-year old.

Pretty sure he meant throwing on the run, which is in fact not a strength of TB.

  2. Bird Says:

With torn knee, he had no confidence to run. You can see him scrambling a bit more this year even though he looks like a baby giraffe
That run was huge in second half

He did not have best game in NE but pouring down ran and a ton of drops and miscues did not help.

For the haters though, 10 tds to 2 picks
5 to 1 ratio is winning football even when the wins are ugly
But think about the two picks :

One was a hail mary before half which count it if you want
Other was soft screen to running back who handled it like a hot potato
So count it . Thats fine

But really its 10-0 ratio. Absolutely sick
Wait until they are all healthy again and use gio in backfield

Its the defense that is still the big unknown. Even when guys come back

  3. Buddha Says:

So much ageism in this world. 44 is just a number. Yes, you can look at averages but those don’t predict the individual case.

  4. Beeej Says:

Brady ran an asTOUNDING 5.28 in the 40 at the Combine in 2000…2 years ago he ran it in 5.17, lol. I don’t think I can post a link but it’s easily gotten

  5. Medicated Pete Says:

TB12 said the word “retire” for the 1st time in an interview after last week’s game. This season is taking a toll on him. Good thing the next few weeks are low key

  6. Joseph Mamma Says:

Wow, Lombardi has really done well for himself as a former front office coffee fetcher. From fetcher to a national radio voice that we all are commenting on, it really is the American Dream.

  7. Buczilla Says:

I wonder if Clyde Christianson awakened Brady’s inner Mike Vick?

  8. Fritz5o Says:

    “My Lord, 44 years-old?”

For me it’s “My Lord, Tom Brady is a Buccaneer ?” STILL

  9. Listnfrmafar Says:

Hmmm a forty yard strike that actually knocked Godwin down while on the run. I guess we watched a different game.

  10. The Beer Whisperer Says:

If I ran the 100 yd, they’d have to time me with a calendar.

  11. Kentucky Buc Says:

I’ve said it before. That knee has been a problem for several years. He finally got it cleaned up.y it

  12. Listnfrmafar Says:

    Hense the title Beer Whisperer

Exactly the fact that people have seen it with their own eyes then turn around and say he can’t.

    Im dying man. Great stuff!

  15. Adrnagy Says:

44 is young. Im 48 and im in my prime. I dont even call roman for help.
    I run a mile in 10 min.

Brady is slow by nature. But hes fit for sure.

  16. crazybucs_CL Says:

if he don’t come next year(retired) or shares his time with Trask, is because the the play calls of BL and TV 🤡.
This season, before last game, 82%-85% of the plays, they have asked TB12 to through the ball. Literally his arm is going to fall of.
After week 4 he is the third QB with most passing yards. A 44 years old.
They, coaches, dont have, dont know any other way. TB12 for everything…

  17. Danny Says:

Guerrero has the magic potion, follow the science

  18. TampabayDJ82 Says:

YoungBucs – Agreed !! TB has a laser rocket 🚀 arm still !

  19. Empty rack Says:

Yes Brady is 44, and can’t run fast or roll out and throw on the run like all these young quarterbacks coming out of college each year but I’ll take his heart and his brain over how fast he can run with the football. Appreciate 44 year old TB12 and enjoy watching him as he leads the bucs in getting to and winning back to back super bowls. Just remember this people , you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. GO BUCS !

  20. cover deuce Says:

Of course he’s never been a runner. Like all the really good ones he has, for as long as I’ve remembered, had a keen sense for how to manipulate the pocket to avoid a rush. He’s no Russell Wilson but idk where you’re getting statue from.

  21. Ben Says:

Belicheat? What are you 12? Seriously…grow up.

  22. Joe Says:

    Seriously…grow up.

    NO!

  23. E.V. Says:

He’s smart I’m pretty sure that’s why he can play till 60. If he started scrambling and getting hit hard he would of been done by 35 like most quarterbacks. Name one scrambling qb that made it past 30-35? Cuz when u get hit hard all the time u start feeling it at a certain age. Just like working hard..

  24. Love it Says:

This year in the NFL there must be at least 12 or 15 quarterbacks that could easily go all the way. And I will stick with Tom Brady he has laser vision, and in reality he has no interceptions. A Hail Mary can a running back who couldn’t hold on to the ball. Wait till he gets his secondary healed he gets his favorite tight and back. I don’t know if he’s going to win the Super Bowl. But he has sure made everybody look at the Tampa Bay Bucs as serious contenders
