A New Patriots Defense For One Game?

October 1st, 2021

Ex-teammate talks.

Interesting look back here at how the Patriots fooled Peyton Manning in 2014, as he was leading one of the great offenses in NFL history.

In 2013, the Broncos set the NFL record for points per game, averaging a ridiculous 37.9 points. A season later, the offense was humming along in high gear when it got blown out at New England.

Former Patriots sack artist linebacker defensive end Rob Ninkovich was barking on BSPN TV this week about how Bill Belicheat had a brand new defense ready for Peyton Manning in Week 9 of that 2014 season.

Ninkovich was getting all Xs and Os heavy about linebackers and defensive ends changing roles and the Patriots’ front-seven having different keys and reactions than they had showed on film in more than three years.

It forced Manning into an early interception, per BSPN highlights and Ninkovich’s breakdown, and a visibly flustered Manning cruised into halftime trailing 27-7 and the rout was on.

The point from Ninkovich was that he expects Tom Brady to be greeted by a mysterious Patriots defense Sunday, something crazy fresh because that might be the Belicheats’ only shot to beat the Bucs.

Joe has heard similar but much more general takes from other expert types among the wild hype for this game. Chris Simms, Rex Ryan, etc., all are expecting a very out-of-the-box night from the New England defense.

Joe is expecting the Bucs to try and pound the ball, in small part to potentially help avoid Brady getting hit by whatever wacky stuff is thrown at him when he drops back.

All bets are off/holds are barred for this game for Billy Bel. This is his Super Bowl ( and likely the final one of his coaching career ). I could definitely see a unique defense for this game…a two man rush…constant blitzes up the middle…you name it.

  2. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

In Brady we trust. I’m sure TB12 has seen just about every D known to man. Agreed that the Pats will show a different look but I trust Brady will crack the code in short order.

  3. SlyPirate Says:

The players on offense and defense love TB12. They are going to have his back.

I doubt the players on the Patriots feel the same passion for BB.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I think it would shock the NE defense if we pounded the rock….time & time again…..are we capable of that…..maybe, if we stuck to it.

  5. Mike Says:

The Bucs CAN pound the rock. Will they? I don’t think so. Brady will be slinging the ball around the field, for better or worse, and I am good with that.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

As great as yall probably think Manning was his rear got tight in so many big games. Gimme Steve Young any day……..Oh wait, we got Brady. Sit back down Steve!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!

  7. lambeau Says:

With the amoeba look, the front seven milling around, you do’t know who’s coming. Brady will have his line prepared. Why they stayed late last night?

  8. Infomeplease Says:

I’m not worried about the offense…they seem to make good adjustments!!! I’m more worried about the defense!! A mistake free, penalty free game would be a great start. Then a turnover or two, a whole lot of pressure, and strong communication will help bring about the desired result!!! GO BUCS!!!

  9. PassingThru Says:

I expect a New England defense that will bait the Bucs into running the ball. Two man high with six defensive backs. The Patriots unlike the Bucs have serious depth among the DBs, and they’ll use to try getting the Bucs to do something they’re not good at: running the ball.

And when Brady passes, the defensive backfield will have six DBs which will make it tough on the QB. The Patriots suck on offense, but their defense in general, and in particular their pass defense is actually pretty good.

  10. Hodad Says:

Teams do what they do. We’ll see some wrinkles, every team puts them in every week, but the defense is still the same. The Pats aren’t changing their defense for one game, that’s crazy. Simms, and the talking heads are just looking for things to say. Nothing here.

  11. Bird Says:

It will be a chess match. Cause brady has an idea what he thinks they may do if they dont do the other thing. 😂

  12. PassingThru Says:

    @Hodad

Wrong. Belichick teams change their defenses from week to week in order to exploit weaknesses. It isn’t just tweaking, that’s why he values positional flexibility in players.

  13. HC Grover Says:

I worry bout Brady allergy. i see reports his voice is hoarse. Tampa is the weed, grass, tree, allergy capital. I get it every time I go to Tampa.

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

The Patriots secondary depth is Jonathan Jones, Joejuan Williams, Kyle Dugger (who I liked in the draft) who is questionable with a hammy, Justin Bethel, and Cody Davis. I wouldn’t say their depth is anything special, better than the Bucs at this time with 2 guys out, but probably around league average, I’d guess.

  15. Hodad Says:

Our defense can barely do the same thing week, to week let alone change the whole defense for one game. Read my post passing by. Defenses, like offenses put in wrinkles every week, but the base defense never changes during the season. To many mistakes would be made if you ran a different scheme every week.

  16. PassingThru Says:

The quality of the Patriots secondary depth is quite good and almost unexpected since they’re missing Stephon Gilmore. Jonathan Jones is one of the best slot CBs in the league, and Dugger is very good. Joejuan Williams… he sucks but I expect to see him in box from time to time. Devin McCourty is excellent as a FS. JC Jackson is trying to show he’s a CB1 for his contract year and his a total ball hawk. I still think he’s a quality CB2 rather than CB1 but I’m quibbling. Jalen Mills is “OK” as the other outside CB, that’s the guy McCourty will help as I expect Brady to throw some balls his way.

The Patriots are not as good at defending TEs and RBs, unfortunately Gronk is doubtful and Gio out. Brate should have a good day, and who knows about OJ.

  17. PassingThru Says:

Speaking of which, JC Jackson was added to the injury report.

Belichick injury reports are a mine field. He throw players on for a hangnail so that opposing teams will never really know who is really injured.

  18. Steve Burke Says:

Rumor has it that Belichick was seen passing cash to Coughlin for notes on how to stop Brady….just saying…

  19. Joe in Michigan Says:

PassingThru: It’s probably more the Patriots system than their players. I’d think most of the Bucs corners would look a lot better if they were playing for Belichick. It seems as if the DB’s for the Bucs are confused at times back there, which isn’t good with Bowles having the same system in Tampa for 39 games now.

  20. Bucschamp Says:

Our running game need to work. Our defense is still asleep and only Tom can carry us now

  21. Ben green Says:

Bill still has some tricks up his sleeve. He did devise gameplans that made Peyton Manning pee down his leg. If anyone knows how to get pressure up the middle, it’s Bill. think he’ll try to beat up Brady’s recievers, and disrupt his timing. Obviously it’s easier said than done, but Bill is going down fighting.

  22. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

There is nothing that New England can do to us that will save them from the whipping they are about to get on National TV.
Coaches do not play the game, players do, and Man for Man, New England just does not match up with us.
Yes, they are at home, yes they will try real hard, but in the end, our superior talent will be the difference.

  23. FrankPillow Says:

    Bill > Byron + Todd

  24. adam from ny Says:

sour puss bill will cheat so he can win…

he’s cutting checks left and right…

buying the pilot, flight attendants, maids, hookers, room service, bag people…anything and anyone to monkeywrench tommy and the gang…

he already bought of the bucs cooks to feed tommy bacteria and now his throat is sore and horse…

billy cheaterola is a beast from the cold northeast

  25. adam from ny Says:

bill is so crazy he could try to poison tommy with room service 🙂

  26. Steve Gaudreau Says:

The biggest key to the Bucs success or any teams success will be the offensive line. Tom don’t need much time to decide who to throw to so if the O-line can keep any qb clean that’s gonna translate to points. TB12 used to treat his linemen well here and he continued to do that in Tampa. That’s the secret sauce to cook with for victory

  27. Abby Says:

I don’t care what bellich throws at Brady he is the master don’t forget that nikavoush obviously don’t know Brady that well other than his two rings he got playing on a Tom Brady team
