Shaq Barrett Vows More Sacks

September 30th, 2021

More sacks coming.

Last week against the Rams, the Bucs barely breathed on Rams quarterback Matt Stafford.

As a result, with just one Will Gholston sack after the game was out of hand, it was a sad display by the Bucs’ pass rush, allowing Stafford to sit back in the pocket unimpeded and pick apart the injury-ravaged Bucs secondary.

It was a galling flashback to the horrid Mike Smith defenses. Back then it seemed the goal of the pass rush was to allow quarterbacks enough time to have a dental examination.

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett was rumored to be rushing Stafford last week. He had one quarterback hit, so props to Shaq for that.

Even Shaq knows what happened Sunday cannot happen again if the Bucs want to win ballgames. So he put his foot down. No longer this season will the Bucs have one lone sack in a game, Shaq said this afternoon.

Joe likes Shaq a lot and Joe sure hopes Shaq and his teammates can live up to his words.

As was demonstrated in the Super Bowl when Pat Mahomes was choked out, if Shaq and Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh and the rest can pressure a quarterback, then the Bucs defense is as good as any NFL team.

Give quarterbacks time to throw this season? It’s an ugly, disturbing flashback to a period of Bucs history we thought was long gone.

    Hope so!

  5. Coburn Says:

Oh you hear that guys?! This guy says he’s going to sack the qb now. Apparently he’s changed his mind and is going to start getting those sacks. Glad he decided to be a team player… Yeah just produce and all will be forgiven

  6. Gofortheface30 Says:

Unbelievable – I get it, but I appreciate Shaq OWNING it, and taking responsibility. He cares what the fans think, he cares about being a contributor, and earning that big contract. I’m not gnna begrudge him for that. We I’ll see what happens starting this Sunday

  7. Ben green Says:

Bill will chip him with backs and TE’s all night long. It appears if you take him out early, he folds.

They are supposed to. Not sure what is going on with Apple. Not doing anything differently. And Apple does not have a tech support line for pods.

Rest assured all podcasts that appear on JoeBucsFan.com are available on many other podcast platforms including — wait for it — JoeBucsFan.com.

@Gofortheface30 – I don’t necessarily disagree with what you’re saying, but I do feel like Shaq has made some proclamations about how good he’s going to be a few different times now… All since his breakout 19 sack season.

So I’m just sick of hearing about it, I want to see it actually happen!

But you’re right, he is acknowledging it and owning it. He should also have a bit of an easier time this week…

  10. PassingThru Says:

This is great news. Shaq is past denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and is now in acceptance that he needs sacks.

  11. David Says:

Great! Back it up and get after it!!!!

  12. Robert Says:

less talk, more sacks please……..he said the same last year. like the guy, but his production does not meet his price tag.

  13. Beeej Says:

They’ve watched his film, everyone seems to know how to stop him now

  14. gbobucsfan Says:

    Talk is cheap

  15. 163doubleplay Says:

Go Get ’em Shaq !!!! I believe in you. GO BUCS!!!

  16. Rob Says:

I don’t know man. As the team says I don’t care about last year. That was last year and has nothing to do with this year. All I know is this year our defense is getting lit up. This is not even close to the same team. It’s honestly embarrassing how bad they are playing. Maybe it’s the plan though and they are just trying to take it easy as long as they can and save the good plays till later in the year. I’m sure they don’t want to be known as one of the worst defenses in the NFL so far this year though.

you got to go to #2…..first. “MORE” is very big statement.
i think he got the money/contract…. and went silence.
let see what he means with “MORE”

  18. crazybucs_CL Says:

that is for sure “MORE” :
“Shaquil Barrett signed a 4 year, $68,000,000 contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including a $18,750,000 signing bonus, $34,250,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $17,000,000.”

  19. Hodad Says:

I wish it was as simple as just saying it. If that’s all it takes why didn’t he say it before the Rams game? This whole defense did a whole lot of talking about how great they were going to be this season, and we the fans are the ones who bought it. They have to prove it. That’s the thing about the NFL, you’re as good as your last game. Our Buc defense aside from two picks against the Falcons has been terrible, and our ranking proves that. We don’t need to be told, we need to be shown. Enough talk, more action.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here’s the deal…..The only way for Shaq to be certain there will not be any more 1 sack games is for him to get 2 sacks….
Sounds good to me….Make it happen!!!

  21. SlyPirate Says:

Great but how? What’s going to be different?

Hopefully they’ve seen enough tape to figure things out.

  22. Buc4evr Says:

No more talking – just do it Shaq!

  23. Biff Barker Says:

Much of Shaq’s game is based on speed. He depends on the other D Lineman to provide penetration and move the QB off his spot or out of the pocket.
Other than Vea, the others have been mostly ineffective in the pass rush. We’ve not found an answer to the spread and shred. QB’s unload the ball quickly.
Glad the FO is beefing up the secondary. It looks like a dogs breakfast right now.

  24. ClodHopper Says:

On a personal level I like Shaq the most on the team, but he’s already promised an MVP caliber season from himself.

And why is Gholston one of our better pass rushers? Not the best but he’s higher on the list than he should be.

  25. BuccaneerButters Says:

I appreciate it, and I certainly hope he can deliver. Like on the Ira podcast, he hasn’t been invisible, just not destroying qbs like he should. We’ve been getting close, so its frustrating to see. Also I’m disappointed that with all his talk this off season he really hasn’t lived up to it. Let’s get going. I know he can do it.

  26. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Show me, don’t tell me.

  27. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Certainly the edge rushes have been a major disappointment the first 3 games. We all know talk is cheap.

  28. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Yeah, and maybe he means there are some 0 sack games coming up for the Bucs, since that’s not one sack.

  29. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Shaq needs to let his play do the talking. As well as Devon White.

  30. Darin Says:

Shaq also vowed to break the season sack record this season. Teams are adjusting and getting it out quick. The Bucs aren’t. Until the corners get up near the line there wont be many more sacks.

  31. Cainishere Says:

    Go Bucs

  32. Iamabuc Says:

All I hear is blah, blah blah. I need to see it to believe it.

  33. Steve in Mad Beach Says:

Got to get more sacks for real! However; I’m really getting tired of seeing the corners lined up 15 yards away from the L.O.S. It’s what the Smiths used to do on every play.

The mentality of just allowing wide open space for quick passes to wide open receivers just doesn’t work in the modern NFL! You have to jam the receiver and/or press to give the pass rush time to get there

  34. richbucsfan Says:

Vows are unnecessary. Just do it.

  35. Tim R. Says:

What about the front four. They are not talking about how they are going to start putting more pressure on the quarterback. When they do this open it up for Shaq to get his sacks. It will definitely open things up for the blitz to be very successful.

  36. Show Me the TDs Says:

Blah, blah, blah…BS. He’ll also be the NFL sack king. Better start sprinting. He’s way behind. And he’s chubby!

  37. mark2001 Says:

If he needs to say this to hype himself up and make himself play at a higher level, more power to him. But the reality will be in the QB sacks and pressures.

  38. Cobraboy Says:

    Shut up and play, Barrett.

So far you’re just loud noise.

  39. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

We live or Die by the Pass Rush. W/O a Pass Rush, our secondary gets exposed. With a Pass Rush, other teams do not have a chance to expose our secondary.
Sherman should help our pass rush, simply by providing better coverage.
When receivers are covered, QB’s hold the ball longer, making them more vulnerable to the pass rush.

  40. LavonteDavid54 Says:

It’s hard to be a sack king when they have you rushing from the side he’s less dominant, getting chipped often, no pressure up middle getting the QB off his spot , getting close but QBs getting it out quick, with zero assistance from the secondary to work hand in hand up front. Oh btw holding is allowed 29% more than just two years ago to protect QBs for TV n fantasy revenue.

For the record NOBODYS sacked Dak or Stafford much this year either.

  41. Brandon Says:

We’ve had three sacks in three games. I’m actually a little surprised we have that many sacks. We have not put any pressure on opposing QBs.. this is the last one sack game… we look a lot closer to being a ZERO sack a game team than FIVE. Is that what he means? He needs to start earning his money.
